Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday:

Luis Martinez gets robbed in Player of the Week voting...

TONIGHT: The Indians welcome the Columbus Clippers to Victory Field for a two-game series. Since sweeping a two-game set from Columbus with two dramatic wins in the bottom of the ninth on July 21 and 22, the Indians have won six of their last eight home games. The Indians are 4-2 on this homestand. Tribe starting pitchers have allowed six earned runs in 40.1 innings (1.34 ERA). Overall, the Tribe pitching staff has recorded a 1.95 ERA (13 ER / 60.0 IP) on the homestand.

The season series with Columbus is tied at five games apiece, however, the Indians have won three of four at Victory Field.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 4-2 in that stretch. The final 16 games of the year will be against IL West rivals.

HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: Muncie native Jim Davis and his cartoon creation Garfield will be at Victory Field tonight to celebrate the cat's 25th birthday.

YESTERDAY: Luis Martinez continued his mastery of IL hitters. Martinez worked eight shutout innings in his third start as he improved to 3-0 with 20.1 scoreless innings. He became the first Indian to fan 10 batters in a game this season while walking two and giving up three hits. Mark Smith's solo homer in the sixth was the game's only run as the Indians gained a split of the four-game set against Durham with a 1-0 triumph.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Doug Davis makes his fourth start with the Indians. He allowed just two earned runs in each of his last two starts going 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA. Davis earned his first win with the Indians in his last start (July 30) when he held Richmond to three hits over 6.0 innings. The Indians are Davis' fifth team in 2003. He started the season with Triple-A Oklahoma (3-0, 3.25), and also made one start for Texas (0-0, 12.00). Toronto claimed Davis off waivers on May 1 and he spent the next two months with the Blue Jays going 4-6 with a 5.00 ERA in 12 games. Davis signed with Milwaukee on July 14 and made one start for Huntsville before joining the Indians on July 17.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Jim Rushford has been named the Indians Player of the Month for July - an award he also received last July. Rushford hit .298 and led the team with 31 hits, 19 RBI and 11 walks. He reached base safely in 24 of 27 games he played.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Mark Smith ranks ninth in the IL with a .300 batting average. Jim Rushford is one plate appearance shy of ranking among the league leaders. His .317 mark would rank fifth.

SCARBOROUGH - MORE THAN FAIR: In 14 games dating back to July 21, Tribe shortstop Steve Scarborough is hitting .308 (16-for-52) with 10 runs, 13 RBI, five doubles, one triple and four home runs. Scarborough hit .262 in July with a team-high 16 extra-base hits.

HOT AT THE PLATE: In 32 games since June 21, Cody McKay is hitting .308 (32-for-104). Mark Smith has hit safely in 19 of his last 22 games (.307, 27-for-88). Alex Delgado has a season-high five-game hitting streak. Rich Paz has reached base safely in all eight games he's played since being promoted from Huntsville on July 25.

THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti leads the league with 15 outfield assists. The last time an IL outfielder recorded more assists was in 1999 when Chad Mottola and Anthony Sanders tied for the league lead with 17.

BROTHERLY LOVE: RHPs Jason and Matt Childers are the first set of brothers to wear Indians uniforms at the same time since Aaron and Bret Boone suited up for the Tribe in 1997. The Boones were in the Indianapolis lineup together for just one day - June 19. Bret was optioned to Indy that day. Aaron was recalled by Cincinnati the next day. Matt and Jason pitched in the same game on Saturday. The Childers brothers have previously been teammates in 1997 (Helena), 1998 (Beloit), 2000 (Mudville) and 2001 (Huntsville).

FOILED AGAIN: Columbus hurler Jorge De Paula took home this week's Pitcher of the Week honors going 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA. In 17.0 innings, he allowed one run while striking out 16. He edged out Tribe starter Luis Martinez who went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. In 14.0 innings, he did not allow a run and struck out 17. Last Monday, the Clippers' Fernando Seguignol beat out Steve Scarborough for Batter of the Week. Seguignol batted .452-3-7 with a .903 slugging percentage while Scarborough hit .423-3-10 with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Tuesday vs. Columbus - RHP Christian Parker (4-6, 5.78) vs. LHP Nate Teut (2-4, 3.92)

Wednesday at Toledo (Game One) - LHP Derek Lee (1-2, 5.40) vs. LHP Nate Robertson (7-7, 3.26)

Wednesday at Toledo (Game Two) - RHP Pasqual Coco (8-6, 4.92) vs. RHP Corey Brittan (4-3, 3.10)

Thursday at Toledo - RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 3.02) vs. RHP Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.32)

In progress: Dayton (Reds) 2, Beloit 1, after 3.5 innings at Pohlman Field

What's more surprising? That Manny Parra has given up two solo HR's, or that he's walked two thus far? Probably the walks; Travis Hinton hit a HR for the Snappers' lone run thus far...

Listening to the game:

Parra not sounding like he is pitching too well. I have been in and out listening to the audio, but the announcers have not been too flattering. Already given up 2 solo shots after four innings.

Tied 2-2

We'll try not to overdue it with "in progress" updates; it's not often we update on Indy, but we need a good Pete Zoccolillo fix...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Fernando Seguignol continued to feast on Indianapolis Indians pitching with a game-turning three-run home run to lead the visiting Columbus Clippers to a 5-4 win at Victory Field on Monday evening. Seguignol's blast spoiled an otherwise quality outing by Tribe starting pitcher Doug Davis in the first of a brief two-game series between the two clubs.

Columbus struck first when Curtis Pride led off the top of the third inning with a triple against Davis (1-2), and scored on Craig Wilson's RBI groundout one batter later.

The Indians struck back in the home half of the fourth inning when Mark Smith yanked an Eric Schmitt offering over the left field fence for his 14th home run of the season. On the very next pitch, Tribe right fielder Pete Zoccolillo turned on another Schmitt fastball and deposited his ninth home run into the seats down the right field line to give the Tribe a 2-1 lead.

Indianapolis (50-64) added an insurance run against Schmitt in the bottom of the sixth inning when Keith Luuloa doubled to left and scored on Steve Scarborough's two-out RBI single to make it 3-1.

Davis coasted through the Columbus order allowing only five hits through the first seven innings and entered the top of the eighth having retired the last 10 batters he had faced. That all changed in a hurry when Pride hit a leadoff single. Craig Wilson then walked before Davis got Bobby Smith to ground into a fielder's choice that put runners on first and third with one out for Seguignol. Batting righthanded, the switch-hitting Seguignol blasted his seventh home run of the season against Indianapolis pitching, and league-leading 22nd overall, to right-center field to give the Clippers a 4-3 lead.

The home run ended a streak in which Indians starting pitchers had limited the opposition to only seven runs in 47.2 innings.

The Clippers added another run in the inning when Erick Almonte singled and scored on an RBI double by Drew Henson, as Davis finished having allowed five runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings.

The final Tribe run came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Zoccolillo singled and scored two batters later on Luuloa's double-play ground out.

Sam Marsonek pitched the ninth inning for Columbus to register his 10th save of the season.

The same two clubs will be back in action on Tuesday night when lefty Nate Teut (2-4, 3.92) takes the mound for the Indians against Christian Parker (4-6, 5.78) and the Clippers (57-60). Game time is set for 7 p.m.

In Progress: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 4, High Desert 3, after eight innings

RH starter Chris Saenz was dominant for the third straight start, allowing only three hits and striking out ten in 6.1 IP. LH reliever Jeff Hundley struck out the only two men he faced in the seventh, both with the bases loaded, preserving a 2-1 lead for Saenz. Up 3-1 in the top of the eighth, RH reliever Justin Backsmeyer served up a two-out, three-run HR, giving the lead to the Quakes.

Unless the Mavs rally in the ninth (which they have done exactly zero times all season), this is sure to be one of the more stinging losses (among many) suffered by the High Desert kids all year.

Saenz a definite plus, however...

I was at the Beloit game tonight, and other than the two mistakes, Parra didn't look bad whatsoever. He made a lot of guys look absolutely silly up there as the seven strikeouts in five innings can attest to. If that was considered a bad start, then he's going to be all right.

Tony Gwynn Jr. was 0-3 but he hit the ball pretty hard each time up. Prince Fielder must have lost a lot of weight, because he walked by me before the game and I kind of felt big (6'1" 200). Fielder also RIPPED a single that almost took out Calix Crabbe.

Take note of all the struggling Stars mentioned here -- Krynzel, Hardy, Johnson, and Knox among them -- ugh

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

STARS WILTING IN THE HEAT?

One true test of a good team, a really good team, and its best players, as well, is how they perform under the murderous, wilting heat and humidity of the dog days of August....... This is where the skill and judgment of the manager really comes into play. He becomes a 10th man, if you will, for the innings pile up on everybody, and the quick pace the team sets in the early months, will turn into a molasses crawl unless players and pitchers are judiciously rested.........

Right now, Frankieball seems to be caught in that crawl. He has been adept all season in making those moves to keep players fresh, but the Stars, losers of four straight, are making mistakes in the field and on the basepaths, and never has it been so apparent as Brad Nelson's sudden break towards home with the bases loaded with Chris Barnwell at the plate and two out in the 5th......... Whether it was a misread sign no one but manager Frank Kremblas is really certain, but after that inning was over, Nelson, who was charged with a stolen base attempt, was removed from the game, and Ryan Knox was moved from center to left.......

The Stars left 11 runners on base in 7 innings, most of them in the middle innings (ten in the 5th, 6th, and 7th). Kade Johnson alone left five on base and when the Stars loaded the bases with no one out in the scoreless 5th, both Noochie Varner and Johnson fouled out.

As I said, manager Frank has adeptly rested his players, but what can you do when two of your star players, two important links in an offensive machine that relies more on speed and aggressiveness than anything else to generate runs, can't get on base......... J.J. Hardy was rested, and he has played in fewer games than four other Stars, but he is 1-for-13 in his last four games and batting .224 since July 1 with two HRs and 12 RBI........ Dave Krynzel, who played in his 100th game of the season this night, was forced into action in the 6th inning, but is 2-for-19 in his last six games, and is hitting .211 with 0 HRs and 6 RBI since July 1........ Players like Corey Hart and Brandon Gemoll, who are picking up some of the slack, have played in the most games for the Stars this season, so is it fair or true to say that Krynzel and Hardy need more days off this month? Hard to say when you argue that these are individual cases, but both players will need refreshed spirits, if not bodies, in time for the playoffs.

Cory Stewart, holding the Stars to a .197 average this season in three starts, came off his worst start of the year six days ago to give up 12 hits in 6 innings......... Bobby Scales' three-run HR was the highlight of a four-run 1st inning and the Bay Bears rode that start to victory, despite early comebacks by the Stars........ Jake Gautreau lined a solo shot in the 3rd to make it 7-3, but Gemoll lined a laser shot to right in the bottom half, tying him for the club HR lead, putting the Stars within three, and that's as close as they would come....... Twelve hits, three walks, and a hit batter yielded just four runs..

Pedro Liriano, coming off two starts in which he yielded no runs in 11 innings, endured the difficulty of a windless, tropical night, throwing 111 pitches, 67 for strikes (60.3%) in 73% humidity, and was pounded for 9 runs and a season-high 11 hits........ He should have been out earlier, but only Ryan Miller and Kenny Ray were available for tonight........ Liriano was finally removed after going 3-and -0 on Jake Gautreau and walking him to fill the bases in the 6th inning. Ray came in and got ahead 0-and-2 on Danny Bravo, but walked him to force in run number eight, then gave up a single to right to score Jon Knott for Mobile's final run........ Ray pitched out of a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the 9th by striking out Jake Gautreau to finish up 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, lowering his ERA to 2.84 and 2.31 in 11 2/3 innings this year vs. Mobile.

Brandon Gemoll had his first four-hit day of the season, raising his average to .265 --- the highest its been since May 11....... Corey Hart's average is up to .304, 6th best in the Southern League, marking his 8th straight game above the .300 mark.......... Kade Johnson is 1-for-19 in his last 6 games, after reaching his high-water mark of .190.......... Ryan Knox is 5-for-33 (.152) since his return from Indianapolis.

The Stars and Mobile will play two Tuesday night at the Joe....... The Stars will be at a 7-0 handicap in the first game, beginning at 6:05, as it completes a suspended game of July 6 in which Mobile was in the middle of a four-run rally in the 3rd inning........ Ben Hendrickson started that game for the Stars, but either Ryan Miller (0-6, 3.53) or Jeff Housman (3-0, 1.45) will be asked to finish it. Roger Daego (6-7, 4.17) will finish it for the Bay Bears' Steve Watkins........ In the second game, Jason Shelley (2-0, 2.00) will face Bay Bear righty Chirs Oxspring (8-3, 3.07), who has a 1.23 ERA in 3 appearances against the Stars this season........ Keep an eye on center fielder Freddy Guzman, who is now 9-for-18 with 6 stolen bases and 5 runs scored against Huntsville since joining the team, July 4.

NOTE: As the Stars; site indicates, Ryan Miller will be asked to mop up the 7-0 deficit in the suspended game; nice work by Kenny Ray in relief last night allowed Miller to be available -- MassBrew

Last year's World Series MVP, Troy Glaus, is expected to join the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes tomorrow when they face lowly High Desert at Mavericks Stadium. Glaus, who is down from the Angels on a rehab assignment with a sore right shoulder, is expected to be with the Quakes for the next six days......... Derrin Ebert, who signed a free agent contract with the Brewers over the weekend, is expected to start for High Desert. Ebert pitched against the Stars in 1997 as a member of the Greenville Braves.

Just released was Baseball America's annual and exclusive Best Tools choices. Dave Krynzel was named as the Southern League's best baserunner, fastest baserunner, and best defensive outfielder. J.J. Hardy was named best defensive shortstop in the Southern League........ Future Huntsville Stars 1st baseman Prince Fielder was named in the Midwest League as their best batting prospect, best power prospect, best strike zone judgment and most exciting player........... Former Huntsville Star Webster Garrison (Stars '91, '92, '96, '98), now manager of the Kane County Cougars, was named best managerial prospect in the Midwest League.

David Krynzel voted best baserunner? Perhaps long-term, but even with recent improvements, that caught stealing ratio says otherwise -- MB

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? David Gates' three-run homer against Justin Backsmeyer in the eighth inning was the difference in the game on Monday night, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 4-3 at Mavericks Stadium. The loss is the second straight for the Mavs, as they fall to 35-79 overall and just 10-34 in the second half.

Leading 3-1 in the eighth inning, the Quakes got a one-out single from Casey Kotchman. Mike Eylward walked to put the tying runs at first and second. Mavs reliever Backsmeyer (1-8) got Justin Turner to pop up for the second out of the inning, but then gave up Gates? seventh homer of the year, a three-run shot to right field.

The Mavs attempted to rally with two outs in the ninth off Quakes reliever Richard Thompson. Chris Morris walked with two outs and advanced to third on a single by Ralph Santana. Thompson however, settled down and got Scott Candelaria to ground into the game-ending fielder?s choice, collecting his seventh save of the year.

The loss spoiled an unbelievable night from Mavs starter Chris Saenz. Trying to win his third straight decision, Saenz struck out a season-best ten men on the night while allowing just a single run in 6.1 innings. Leading 2-0 in the seventh, Saenz began to get rattled, hitting Brent Del Chiaro with the bases loaded to force in a run. Jeff Hundley came out of the bullpen and struck out both men he faced with the bases loaded to keep the Mavs in front at 2-1.

Saenz allowed just one run on three hits, but walked two and hit three men. He has now allowed just two runs in his last 20.1 innings. Quakes starter Steven Shell allowed two runs on six hits in six innings and also received a no-decision. Rancho reliever David Wolensky (4-3) gave up an RBI triple in the seventh inning to Candelaria, but got the win in relief.

On Tuesday night, the Mavs send Derrin Ebert to the hill as the Hesperia native makes his Mavericks debut. World Series MVP Troy Glaus of the Anaheim Angels is expected to be in the starting lineup for the Quakes, who send Tim Petke (1-3) to the hill on Tuesday night. Game time is 7:05 )9:05 Central) and plenty of great seats remain.

World Series MVP Glaus, Local Pitcher Ebert, Headline Series

ADELANTO, CA ? Anaheim Angel?s third baseman Troy Glaus, last season?s World Series MVP, is expected to play for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes beginning on Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium, as the High Desert Mavericks take on the Quakes.

Glaus, who is down from the Angels on a rehab assignment with a sore right shoulder, is expected to be with the Quakes for the next six days. The Mavericks host the Quakes at Mavericks Stadium through Thursday, before the series moves to Rancho Cucamonga for the weekend.

Glaus batted .385 during the World Series last year, with three home runs and eight RBIs, helping the Anaheim Angels to their first ever World Championship.

Tuesday?s spotlight will have to be shared, as Hesperia native Derrin Ebert, who signed a Free Agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend, will start on Tuesday night for the Mavs.

Ebert, who spent time in the Major Leagues in 1999 with the Atlanta Braves, will return to the High Desert and pitch locally for the first time since 1994, when he played for the Hesperia Scorpions in High School.

Ebert is now in his second tour of duty within the Brewers Minor League system. Last season, he was a AAA All-Star for the Indianapolis Indians, the Brewers International League affiliate.

Ebert will be signing autographs on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium in the series finale, during Meet-A-Maverick Thursday.

High Desert Box Score:

Ralph Santana is hardly your prototypical RF, but he's on fire at the plate and on the basepaths as of late; I believe it was mentioned in the broadcast last night that catcher Brian Foster is limited to DH/PH duties for another week or so as he nurses various bumps and bruises...

Arizona Box Score:

RHP Tim Dillard plunks three during his five scoreless, one-hit innings; SS Gilberto Acosta continues his tremendous season, reaching base in all four plate appearances (lifting his OBP to .415) and stealing two bases (he's perfect in 17 attempts) -- he's been the Maryvale MVP, no doubt...

The Rolaids Minor League Relief Standings are out -- the various Brewer closer roles have fluctuated at the various levels, but it's worth noting that Dana Eveland and Nick Slack form a lefty-righty one-two standings punch in the Pioneer League, a very difficult feat to pull off. Each has been tremendous for Helena.

In fact, with Ty Taubenheim finishing up last night's 3-2 Helena win, that's one of the few Helena victories that neither closer has had a hand in...
