Link Report Tue. 8/5 - Beloit is up, but Mike Jones is down

MassBrew

Tuesday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville and Beloit within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish.

As for the Arizona Brewers, their playoff situation is unique. The Phoenix-area team with the best record plays the Tucson-area team with the best record in a one-game championship. But since there's also a first and second half to the season, we're just way too confused about it, and we'll just track the games http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

First off, just would like to say that the several Minor League Forum threads that have been very active today have been among the best discussions I've seen here in months, the "Beloit vs. Huntsville" topic -- top notch among them. Great job, everyone -- a fantastic reminder of why Brian created Brewerfan in the first place.

Indianapolis Media Notes for Tuesday:

Just the relatively new items here, to avoid repetition...

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut makes his ninth start and 14th appearance for the Indians. Teut pitched just one inning on July 26 at Durham, and left while warming up for the second with tightness in his back. Earlier this season (May 28 - June 17), Teut was on the disabled list with a lower back strain. Teut faced Columbus on July 21 at Victory Field and allowed three earned runs in six innings. He did not get a decision in the 6-4 win. Teut is 2-1 with a 3.14 ERA in eight games at Victory Field. Teut has a 5.82 ERA over the first two innings of games, but has a 1.96 ERA from the third through the sixth.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks sixth with a .319 average. Mark Smith's .299 average is .001 points from tying for 10th.

SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS: LHP Luis Martinez and Shane Nance are boasting impressive scoreless innings streaks. Martinez, who was promoted from Double-A on July 24, has made three starts and has yet to allow a run in 20.1 innings. He has fanned 23 while walking six. Nance, who has had two stints in Milwaukee this season, has not allowed a run since May 16. In 20 appearances since May 23, Nance has worked 26.1 scoreless innings. In that period he has allowed just nine hits and four walks while striking out 21.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Wednesday at Toledo (Game One) - LHP Derek Lee (1-2, 5.40) vs. LHP Nate Robertson (7-7, 3.26)

Wednesday at Toledo (Game Two) - RHP Pasqual Coco (8-6, 4.92) vs. RHP Corey Brittan (4-3, 3.10)

Thursday at Toledo - RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 3.02) vs. RHP Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.32)

Game One: Mobile (Padres) 8, Huntsville 2, completion of suspended game

This one was 7-0 in the third when they picked it up, so a nice job by Ryan Miller holding the fort. You'll see Ben Hendrickson's name below, but he didn't actually throw tonight.

Local boy LHP Derrin Ebert shows the Rancho A-ball kids what a true pro can do, as he limits the Quakes to three base hits (two infield singles, and one to the outfield by that Troy Glaus guy). Ebert's night is done, up to the bullpen now...

Columbus (Yankees) 17, Indianapolis 1

You'll notice I didn't see the need to post an "In Progress" update on this debacle...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Drew Henson drove in five runs and collected three of the visiting Columbus Clippers' 20 hits Tuesday night as the Clippers handed the Indians their most lopsided defeat in the Victory Field era, 17-1.

Columbus (58-60) scored four runs in both the second and fourth innings, single runs in the third and fifth innings, and tacked on seven runs in the ninth in the onslaught.

Henson, who was 3-for-5, was hit by a pitch and scored the Clippers second run in the second. The former University of Michigan quarterback singled home a run in the third and added a two-run double in the fourth. Henson, who leads Columbus with 32 doubles, added another two-run double in the ninth.

Former Indian Bobby Smith collected four hits to lead Columbus' attack. Bubba Crosby and Michel Hernandez each added three hits.

Christian Parker (5-6) dominated the Indians (50-65) on the mound. Parker retired the first 10 batters he faced, and scattered seven hits over eight innings. After seven innings of shutout ball, Parker finally was reached for a run in the eighth. Wilton Veras led off with a single and went to third on a double by Steve Scarborough. Two batters later, Jim Rushford delivered a sacrifice fly to right to score Veras.

Tribe starter Nate Teut (2-5) took the loss. In 3.2 innings, Teut allowed 10 hits and nine runs.

The Indians travel to Toledo Wednesday where they will play three games in two days. A doubleheader Wednesday starts at 4:30 p.m. The Tribe returns to Victory Field Friday for Fireworks Night.

Yes, it is a great night in Snapperland. First, Weeks is signed, then the team wins in come-from-behind fashion and then the two closest pursuers(Kane County doesn't count as a result of winning the first half) lose. They have a 5 1/2 game lead over Clinton and a 7/12 game lead over Cedar Rapids and Peoria(who was no-hit by Burlington tonight). Start printing those playoff tickets!!

Scary news from Huntsville:

Mike Jones' elbow is barking again, and he's heading to Milwaukee for an MRI. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

There might be a roster move involving the Stars' staff on Wednesday, as the bullpen is getting taxed tonight, as game two (which was scheduled for seven innings) is now into the 11th.

Game Two: Huntsville 4, Mobile (Padres) 3, 12 innings in the regularly scheduled game, supposed to be a seven-inning game

Unbelievable and much-needed victory for the Stars; after an Alejandro Machado error helped Mobile to a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th, Brad Nelson and Mike Kremblas reached to open the bottom of the inning. Pinch-hitter Chris Barnwell laid down a bunt, and was safe when the throw sailed past the first baseman, scoring Nelson to tie things up. After David Krynzel failed by flying out to shallow right, J.J. Hardy won it with a base hit after an intentional walk had loaded the bases.

Good thing, too, as Barnwell had pinch-hit for Matt Parker, and the Stars were drawing straws to see which position player would work the 13th if needed http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

High Desert 8, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Ebert Outperforms Glaus on Center Stage at Mavericks Stadium

ADELANTO, CA ? Hesperia native Derrin Ebert pitched five scoreless innings in his Mavs debut, helping the High Desert Mavericks to an 8-2 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Ebert upstaged 2002 World Series MVP Troy Glaus, who was rehabbing a sore right shoulder. Glaus, who finished the night 1-2 with a single and two walks, is expected to be with Rancho for the remaining two games in this series.

Ebert (1-0) allowed just three base hits in his five innings, two infield singles and a single to center by Glaus. The left-hander struck out two without allowing a walk, leaving after five innings with a 4-0 lead.

The Quakes tried to rally in the sixth against Aaron Dean, picking up a two-run ground rule double from Mike Eylward. With the score 4-2, Dean allowed an infield single to David Gates to load the bases. Dean came back to strike out Zack Riera looking, and then retired Ransel Melgarejo on a fly ball to right field, leaving the bases loaded.

The Mavs got those runs back and then some, by scoring four in the bottom of the sixth. Scott Candelaria?s two-run double blew the game open, as the Mavs went up 7-2. Froilan Villanueva added his second RBI single of the night, driving in Candelaria to make it 8-2.

Dean went on to work scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth before turning it over to Bobby Bystrowski, who worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Mavs took the early lead by scoring one run in each of the first four innings off Quakes starter Tim Petke (1-4).

Ralph Santana had another great night for the Mavs offensively, with three hits, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base.

After Tuesday's game, it was announced that left-handed reliever Jeff Hundley was promoted to the AA Huntsville Stars. Hundley was 0-1 with a 4.29 ERA in 23 appearances for the Mavericks.

On Wednesday, the Mavs look to make it two straight wins, as they send Dan Hall (6-10) to the hill against Quakes lefty Jake Woods (8-6). Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Tonight, the Stars played 19 innings, albeit in two games, the first - to finish up a suspended game of July 6 that was picked up in the 3rd inning........ The Stars, in a 7-0 hole as they came in tonight, lost that game, 8-2 in regulation, giving Ben Hendrickson his 4th loss, as he sat watching from the stands....... The second game, concluded at 12:21 AM after J.J. Hardy poked a hole through the left side to score Mike Kremblas with the winning run........

Last year, almost to the day (August 6), the Stars and Lookouts played 18 innings at Joe Davis Stadium --- the longest game in innings in that Stadium's history, both games coming a day before the start of school for city youngsters, leaving the Stadium devoid of a multitude of Little Leaguers from now till the rest of the season........ Outfielder Pete Zoccolillo was charged with the 8-7 loss in that game, and oddly enough, Ryan Gripp was warming up in the bullpen tonight, should the Stars have gone to the 13th inning.

The late finish doesn't give me much time to dawdle, so I'll get down to business........ Huntsville starter Jason Shelley handed in another fine performance, going as long as manager Frank Kremblas asked of him, throwing 116 pitches. Shelley was used to throwing 140 or more while he was playing the independent circuit.......... Jon Knott lined a 2-out, 2-run homer off him to left in the 1st inning, but after that, he had little trouble with Mobile........ Shelley struck out three in the 2nd inning, then got out of a jam with runners on first and third in the 3rd inning, thanks to a pair of ground balls.......

The game was saved for Shelley and Huntsville in the 7th inning in a fine play at the plate by Mike Kremblas. Freddy Guzman hit a one-out single to right field. With a 1-0 count on Todd Donovan, Shelley uncorked a wild pitch in the dirt that went to the backstop. Kremblas had trouble finding it, and the speedy Guzman had no trouble finding third base....... The Stars were close to their 5th straight loss with one out and the lead run 90 feet away. Donovan hit a sharp grounder to Corey Hart near the line, held Guzman to the base, then threw to Brandon Gemoll to get the out at first. Gemoll then rifled the ball to Krembas, who made a beautiful block at home plate, preventing Guzman from getting in. Guzman got up, and looked at home plate ump, Ria Cortesio, trying to influence her call, but Kremblas used the spare moment to tag or at least, retag Guzman to leave any doubt behind, and Cortesio thumbed Guzman out.

The Stars had tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Alejandro Machado led off with a single to right-center and stole 2nd........ After slumping J.J. Hardy flied to right and Hart struck out on a Bryan Gaal slider, Gemoll, hitting .387 in his last 9 games, legged out a double to left center, scoring Machado. Noochie Varner followed with a single down the left field line to score Gemoll, but Brad Nelson left Varner stranded by fouling out to 3rd baseman Bobby Scales.

Mike Adams and Matt Parker did sparkling jobs out of a thin bullpen......... Adams threw 50 pitches in three innings, striking out three in the 10th inning, but Parker gave up an unearned run in the 12th when Machado casually flipped away an easy two-out grounder into the Mobile dugout, enabling Mobile's hottest hitter, Bobby Scales, to reach 2nd. Humberto Quintero, hitting .342 in his last 35 games, hit a ground-rule double into the right field corner to break the 2-2 tie.

But you never say die in baseball, and the Stars have been a decent comeback club this season........ They were 4-5 in extra-inning games and have won a couple of games this season when tied after 8 ........ The Bay Bears called on their closer, Rusty Tucker. Tucker has a league-leading 28 saves, but has been vulnerable in the second half of the season (4.15 ERA)........ Nelson hit Tucker's first pitch up the middle for a single......... Kremblas then followed with another hit up the middle into center field, Nelson stopping at 2nd......... Coming in to pinch-hit, Chris Barnwell, hitless in his last 5 trips to the plate off the bench, hit a ground ball to third, but Bobby Scales, trying to make a tough play, submarined the ball into right field, scoring Nelson and sending Kremblas to third........ Dave Krynzel flied out to center, not deep enough to score Kremblas and Machado was passed intentionally to fill the bases. That set up J.J.'s game-winning hit.

J.J. made the play-of-the-day in the 6th inning, when leadoff hitter Humberto Quintero hit a soft liner toward third base. Hardy, running from his position onto the grass deep in back of Corey's territory, made a diving catch to his right to catch the ball off the grass.

Jeff Housman (3-0, 1.45) will get the start for the Stars Wednesday against Duncan McAdoo (3-7, 4.75) at 7:05........ Mike Jones, the scheduled starter, has been pulled once again from the rotation, and on Friday, will travel to see his doctor in Milwaukee for an MRI on his elbow. There is a possibility Jonesy will go on the DL again, in which the Stars will possibly acquire a new pitcher before the week is out (the Mavs' Jeff Hundley, as indicated above - MassBrew).

Out of the original starting rotation when the season began, only Ben Hendrickson and Pedro Liriano remain. Each has been inconsistent, newcomer David Nolasco has been battered, and although Jason Shelley and Jeff Housman have been a godsend, the Stars are not looking in great shape as playoff time looms ahead.

Once with a membership of over 300, the Huntsville Stars Booster Club, once winning praise by outside observers as the best in the league, is in danger of dying of apathy....... Down to 130-140 members, only less than a dozen take an active role now on the club and most meetings now have to dismiss for lack of a quorum. Some members who accepted specific roles for the club, have never bothered to attend a meeting, and even worse, the players upon whom the club serves, don't seem to care to engage themselves in club activities, such as banquets and bowling tournaments, or even taking time to get personally acquainted....... Only four players participated in this summer's golf tournament....... Votes for the Rocky and Eagle awards have come down to a trickle because the Club members simply have had little, if any contact, with the players at all. The loan closet money spent is down to an all-time low of $200. Only the Hispanic players have shown any interest in what the Boosters offer --- forks, knives, appliances, blankets, et.al....... Sad. A general meeting at 6 pm at the Joe on Thursday, August 14, 2003, will decide if there will be a Booster Club at all next year....... The end of the year party under the tent after Friday's game could be the farewell party, instead.

Stealth catching prospect Jeremy Frost with 2 walks tonight and a base hit. We may have lampooned the catcher-fest in this years draft, but between Kade, Frost, Captain Lou, and Opdyke we've got some solid catching prospects plus a couple of guys like Foster and Esparagozza who could be pretty good with some luck.

I'm not sure I agree with the demotion of Adam Heether. He has been a valuable contributor to the Snappers as a backup to Jeff Eure. Just last week, he provided the difference with a three-run homer. I realize infield innings are going to come at a premium when Rickie Weeks arrives. However, IF Heether can play shortstop as indicated in the box score, I have a hard time believing he can be any worse than Chas Terni. He has almost 30 errors and doesn't contribute alot offensively. I say at least give Heether a chance at shortstop. Heck, they gave Keith Bohanon an ill-fated attempt at the position.
