Link Report for Games of Wednesday, August 6th

MassBrew

Wednesday's Daily Menu : Do they still run Wednesday is "Prince Spaghetti Day" ads, like they did years ago here in the Northeast? Fielder would be a natural tie-in, both in name and well, girth http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville and Beloit within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish.

As for the Arizona Brewers, their playoff situation is unique. The Phoenix-area team with the best record plays the Tucson-area team with the best record in a one-game championship. But since there's also a first and second half to the season, we're just way too confused about it, and we'll just track the games http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: LHP Derek Lee and RHP Pascual Coco in a doubleheader at Toledo (Tigers), 4:30 PM -- as much as we admit to having a few Indy favorites, yes, we're all on the edge of our seats for this one -- not...

HUNTSVILLE: LHP Jeff Housman, who goes tonight vs. Mobile (Padres) at home (7:05 PM), along with Jason Shelley, has indeed been a "godsend", as David Weiser noted this morning in his update...

New Items from the Indy Media Notes:

TONIGHT: The Indians meet Toledo in a doubleheader to open a three-game series and a three-game road trip. The Indians are coming off of an eight-game homestand on which they went 4-4, including losing four of the last five. If the Tribe drops the opener tonight, they will be 16 games under .500 for the third time this season. They have not been 17 games below .500 since Aug. 7, 1993.

The Indians have had eight games postponed due to rain this season. Tonight's doubleheader is the result of two postponements at Toledo earlier this season. The teams were washed out on April 7, and rescheduled the game for June 4. Unfortunately, rain washed that make-up game out as well. The Indians and Hens have met successfully six times this season with each team winning three of the contests. Each team is 2-1 at the other's home ballpark. The teams played a home and home series June 3-6 with each team winning twice.

Tonight will be the Indians sixth doubleheader of 2003. The Tribe has recorded one sweep and two splits, and has been swept once.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 23rd start in game one. He also leads the Indians with eight wins, 115.1 innings and 83 strikeouts. This will be Coco's second start against Toledo. On June 3, he turned in one of his finest outings of the season working seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. He struck out a season-high nine Mud Hens. That victory was the fourth in a string of seven straight that came over 12 starts from May 4 - June 28. Since then, Coco is 0-2 in five starts, although he allowed just one earned run over six innings against Durham in his last start.

Lefthander Derek Lee will pitch the nightcap making his fifth start and eighth appearance since being promoted from Huntsville on July 4. Lee is coming off an outstanding performance July 31 against Durham. Lee had a perfect game through 6.0 innings before allowing a lead-off single in the seventh. He finished with one hit and one walk in 7.2 innings striking out nine.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Thursday at Toledo - RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 3.02) vs. RHP Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.32)

Check out his stats... He seemed to really turn the corner last year when he got traded to Rockford. He cranked it up another notch this year and hasn't disappointed in Huntsville.

He has decent stuff.... Gets it up around 90-92 mph and has a nasty slurve which has some bigtime movement on it. Because of his age, it'd be nice to see him move up to Indy in a hurry.

Hmmm.... there was no pitcher listed for Friday's start against Charlotte.

a) They usually list starters for the next two days

b) Luis Martinez's turn in the rotation is Friday

the plot thickens.

I hope they are keeping David Manning's spot warm at Indy.

I guess he also has a huge splitter that opposing teams find difficult to hit (or even make contact with). His stats in the Frontier League were pretty good... I definitely think he has the potential to be a contributor at the Major League level. Its hard to say for sure without seeing him pitch, but I've only heard positive feedback so far.

One of you guys that's heading down to Huntsville this summer needs to interview him... I think it would be a very interesting story.

Game One: Toledo (Tigers) 3, Indianapolis 2

Game Two: Toledo 5, Indianapolis 3

Indy Site Doubleheader Summary:

TOLEDO, OHIO -- Cecil Cooper had never thrown a base before. But with his team facing its fourth straight loss, and sixth defeat in seven games, the Indianapolis Indians manager figured drastic measures were needed. His antics temporarily put enough fire in the Indians to push across two runs in the second game of a doubleheader, but Toledo's Patrick Lennon's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth gave the Mud Hens a sweep of the twinbill, 3-2 and 5-3.

After the Indians dropped the opener, Mark Smith gave the team an early lead in the nightcap when he led off the second inning with his team-leading 15th home run of the season.

The Tribe looked to add to the lead in the fourth when Smith delivered a one-out single. Pete Zoccolillo followed with a long drive to right which was originally ruled a two-run home run by first base umpire Damien Beals. After a brief argument by Toledo skipper Larry Parrish, the three umpires conferred and changed the call to a ground rule double. That brought the mild-mannered Cooper storming out of the dugout in disgust. After a lengthy argument with Beals, Cooper threw his hat down before reaching down and picking up first base. After continuing his argument, Cooper tossed the bag towards home plate before departing the game as the first Tribe manager to be ejected in over three seasons.

With the runners returned to second and third base, the Mud Hens gave an intentional pass to Cody McKay to load the bases for Wilton Veras who brought a .229 average into Wednesday's action. Veras delivered a single into right-center to plate the two runs and give the Tribe a 3-0 lead.

The spark in the Tribe extinguished itself quickly, however, as the next two batters were retired to end the inning. After a lead-off single by Jason Conti in the fifth, the final nine Indians went down in order.

Toledo tied the game with three runs in their half of the fifth. Tribe starter Derek Lee, who allowed only one hit in 7.2 innings in his last start, had allowed only one baserunner through the first four innings. The first three Hens reached safely to start the fifth, however, and Omar Infante cleared the bases with a double over Conti's head in center to tie the game.

With the game knotted at three, Lennon belted his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot off of Roberto Giron (0-4), in the bottom of the sixth to give Toledo the win.

The Mud Hens (59-59) also came from behind to win the opener. Jim Rushford hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Tribe the lead, but Toledo put together a three-run uprising in the fifth to claim the victory. Andres Torres' two-run double capped the inning.

Nate Robertson (8-7) was the winner in game one while Pasqual Coco (8-7) took the loss. Toledo closer Fernando Rodney closed out both games to earn his 20th and 21st saves.

The Indians (50-67) have fallen 17 games below .500 for the first time since Aug. 7, 1993. They will attempt to salvage one game of the series in the finale Thursday night. Ben Ford (3-3) will face Toledo's Seth Greisinger (5-7).

In progress: Rancho Cucamonga 2, High Desert 1, after three innings

The only remaining action tonight, so check them out (link in the Daily Menu above).

Audio highlight in the second inning as Daryl Clark nailed Troy Glaus on a throw to home plate. That's one for the Mavs' web page for audio archives, Mike Lindskog!

Dan Hall just struck out Glaus in the top of the fourth -- http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

For the overnighters, as I call it a night...

In progress: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 3, after 8.5 innings

Tommy Marx sees action here in the ninth (Troy Glaus strikes out looking), so confirming a Saenz - Petty - Kolb - Ebert - Hall rotation now, I imagine.

Barring the Mavericks' first ninth-inning win this year, not a stellar Link Report when only Indy and the Mavs see action (nothing personal, guys).

Final: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Jake Woods pitched seven strong innings on Wednesday night, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the High Desert Mavericks by a final score of 9-3 at Mavericks Stadium.

Woods (9-6) allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings, in running his record to 4-0 against the Mavs this year. Woods struck out four without walking a batter.

Woods gave up a one-out triple to Froilan Villanueva in the second, who later scored on Jeremy Frost?s sac fly. Villanueva later hit a line drive home run to left field in the seventh off Woods, accounting for the only two runs allowed by the left-hander.

The Quakes took the early lead against Mavs starter Dan Hall (6-11), as Azarias Corbeil hit his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to right field in the second, giving the Quakes a 2-0 lead. Leading 2-1 in the fifth, the Quakes chased Hall, as they loaded the bases for Casey Kotchman. Hall plunked Kotchman to force in a run and give the Quakes a 3-1 lead. Hall then gave way to Danny Stout who allowed all three inherited runners to score for a 6-1 Quakes? lead. Hall allowed six runs on the night, five of which were earned, one nine hits.

Stout gave up a three-run homer to Mike Eylward, his 12th of the year, in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-1 ballgame.

After Villanueva?s sixth homer of the year in the seventh, the Mavs made it 9-3 in the eighth, as Ralph Santana walked with the bases loaded against Quakes reliever David Wolensky. Scott Candelaria lined out to third for the second out of the inning and Daryl Clark popped up to left field, ending any hopes for a rally.

Justin Gordon worked a scoreless eighth, before Tommy Marx fanned Troy Glaus looking in a scoreless ninth. Glaus, down from the Anaheim Angels with a sore right shoulder, went 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He walked once and struck out twice on the evening. Glaus is expected to be in the lineup on Thursday as the Mavs and Quakes wrap up the four-game series.

Danny Kolb (4-9) goes for the Mavs in the finale, as he takes on Eddie Ramirez (0-1) of the Quakes. Game time at Mavericks Stadium is at 7:05 (9:05 Central).
