Link Report for Games of Friday, August 8th

Friday's Daily Menu :

What -- no doubleheaders?

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Get' em tonight, Chad!

From Baseball America's Chat Today:

Q: Jim Goulart from brewerfan.net asks:

What's happened to LHP Chad Petty (0-8 at High Desert)? This wasn't what the Brewers bargained for when they received Petty (and OF Noochie Varner, holding his own at AA Huntsville) in the Alex Sanchez trade. Thanks.

A: Will Kimmey: High Desert, one of BA Associate Editor Alan Matthews' favorite high Class A destinations, is a hitter's paradise. Plus the Brewers have kept most of their best prospects in two groups, one just above at Hunstville and the other below at Beloit. So there's not much talent there, making it one of the minors' worst teams. Think Tigers. So Petty's probably a little better than that record, like Jeremy Bonderman and Mike Maroth are in Detroit, but Petty isn't a real overpowering pitcher and hasn't had much success with his changeup. So a two-pitch pitcher in a hitter's park does not a good combination make.

The guy is still young, and I'm going to wait until he is out of High Desert until I start judging him. I know he's sucked...but I try not to be rough on pitchers that suck there, and I try not to be overly excited about hitters that tear it up there.

I finally got a question answered in a BA Chat. I've been like 0 for 13 this yr lol.

Q: Geoff from brewerfan.net asks:

Which team is more loaded w prospects: Huntsville(Corey Hart,JJ Hardy, Brad Nelson, Mike Jones, Dave Krynzel) or Beloit(Manny Parra, Prince Fielder,Tony Gwynn, soon-to-be Rickie Weeks) and is the Brewers farm system in the top 5 now in your opinion?

A: Will Kimmey: I like Hunstville, just because they're more advanced, but two very nice squads and hope for the future

More from BA's Chat:

Q: Grover from Queens, NY asks:

With Rickie Weeks signing this week, who do you think will reach the majors first, Weeks, Prince Fielder or Anthony Gwynn? Also, do you think Weeks will remain at 2B as a major leaguer?

A: Will Kimmey: The Brewers new regime has decided to keep core groups of prospects together and let them develop and move up the ladder at the same time. Those three will be in the same group, finishing at Beloit this year, then moving to high Class A in 2004, but not before. Same for the Huntsville crew, several of whom could find themselves in Milwaukee next year. Lots of scouts felt Weeks could be fine at second, but with his bat, he'd still play as a decent LF, so it's not a concern, though he's obviously more valuable with that bat in the middle infield. He's such a good athlete, I like his chances. I'll give Prince Fielder and his ridiculous bat potential the best and first odds of watching the sausage race live.

Q: C. Monty from Springfield asks:

Will- Any hints about the early finalists for BA's player of the year? Does the player maintain rookie status? It would seem like Harden could be the minor league player of the year, though he'll exhaust his rookie status with his call up.

A: Will Kimmey: Names kicked around here lately: Prince Fielder, Zack Greinke, Joe Mauer. Harden and Miguel Cabrera won't have enough minor league time to make the list.

Q: Dave from Maryland asks:

Could there be a future outfield combination of Brad Nelson, Dave Krynzel, and Anthony Gwynn?

A: Will Kimmey: Don't see why not.

Q: James from Guthrie OK asks:

Hi Will, I am going to keep asking questions in hope that you'll answer one of mine. Where in the rotation do you predict Brewer Manny Parra?

A: Will Kimmey: Manny Parra has the stuff and mentality to be a top of the rotation guy. He still has plenty to learn as he refines his stuff, but he Hendrickson and Jones (if both can get over some health speed bumps) looks mighty promising for Brewers fans down the road.

Looks like a nice night for Cody McKay. Great job by Martinez and Nance and Childers held it down until Rushford came through in the tenth. Good execution to get the runner over and it sounds like the defense did their part as well. Good win for the Indians.

IndyIndians.com Game Summary:

The Indianapolis Indians picked up their second straight extra-innings victory on Friday night as Jim Rushford singled home Alex Delgado with the game's lone run in the Tribe's 1-0 victory over the Charlotte Knights. The win follows up a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Thursday night at Toledo.

With the game still scoreless heading into the bottom of the 10th, Delgado led off the inning with a double to right-center off of Charlotte reliever Doug Nickle. After Jason Conti's bunt failed to move Delgado to third, Rich Paz grounded out to first base allowing Delgado to advance. The Knights then brought in lefty Dave Sanders to face the left-handed batting Rushford, who wasted no time in lofting the first Sanders offering just over the outstretched glove of Charlotte centerfielder Joe Borchard for an Indians victory.

Making his fourth start of the season for Indianapolis, Luis Martinez pitched 6.0 shutout innings while allowing only three hits. Martinez, who has yet to allow a run since being promoted from Double-A Huntsville on July 24th, extended his scoreless innings streak to 26.1 innings by striking out five Knights against four walks on 90 pitches.

Martinez benefited from an outstanding defensive performance from his battery mate Delgado. In the top of the second inning Martinez issued a walk and allowed a base hit to Armando Rios to put runners on first and third with only one out. Martinez battled back to strike out Ryan Hankins, and on the same play Delgado's throw to Paz at second was in time to catch Rios attempting to steal second to end the inning.

One inning later Delgado again came to the rescue as Martinez allowed a walk and a base hit to put runners on first and second with no outs. Following a flyout by Aaron Miles, Delgado gunned down his second runner in as many innings when he caught Jorge Nunez attempting to steal second base on the back end of a double steal. Then with two outs and a man on third, Delgado picked up Tim Hummel's squeeze bunt attempt and fired a bullet to Rushford at first for the final out of the inning.

Shane Nance pitched 2.2 innings of shutout baseball in relief of Martinez to run his own streak of scoreless innings to a team-high 29.0 innings. Jason Childers pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Indians to earn his third victory of the season, improving to 3-4.

Overshadowed in the late-inning heroics was a solid performance turned in by Charlotte starting pitcher Jon Adkins. Adkins pitched 8.0 innings allowing only five hits before leaving with the game still tied at 0-0.

The two teams will continue the three game series on Saturday night when the Tribe sends lefty Doug Davis (1-2, 4.55) to the mound to face Ryan Kohlmeier (7-4, 4.45) and the Knights. Nickelodeon cartoon character Sponge Bob will be at the park.

On a related note, it appears that Luis was almost promoted to start Saturday in Milwaukee. The Huntsville Stars game summary on Friday night/Saturday morning features this tidbit: "Former Stars pitcher Luis Martinez received the call-up to Milwaukee Friday and will make his big league debut Saturday against the Florida Marlins at Miller Park." Obviously that's not the case, but it would appear that the Brewers' had been thinking seriously about it and the Huntsville gang jumped the gun.

Interesting.

Luis Martinez...amazing

hopefully he'll build up confidence throughout the duration of the AAA season so hes pitching on the ground next year. I would hate to see him get roughed up late in '03 and lose it all.

Hard to believe that Ben was pulled for giving up one run... hope he is alright. Ray and Parker combine to allow only 2 runs, 1 earned, in 7 and two-thirds innings but Parker nonetheless gets the hard-luck loss. Two hits for Noochie but not much else offensively.

HuntsvilleStars.com reports that Hendrickson was removed for "precautionary reasons". Hopefully this proves to be a smart move and Ben is A-Okay. I'm sure everyone in the organization is extra-sensitive to pitchers' arms today.

HuntsvilleStars.com Game Summary:

After three consecutive late-inning victories, Huntsville?s luck finally ran out. In the opener of a four-game series, West Tenn rallied to win in the bottom of the ninth, 3-2, on Friday night at Pringles Park. The playoff-bound Stars (65-50, 25-22) fell 1½ games behind Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half chase.

Down 2-1 in the sixth, the Diamond Jaxx mounted a threat against reliever Ken Ray. Mike Dzurilla drew a one-out walk and raced to third on Jason Dubois? two-out single. Ray Sadler followed with a slow roller to short, where J.J. Hardy fielded and threw on the run. Sadler was ruled safe on a very close play at first, and Dzurilla scored the tying run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sadler reached on a high pop-up in front of the plate that grazed third baseman Corey ?s glove for a two-base error. Jackson Melian, a Star in 2002, received an intentional walk, then Alan West lined out to right after twice failing to execute a sacrifice bunt. Lukas McKnight was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for pinch-hitter Blair Barbier, who lofted a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sadler for a walk-off West Tenn win, 3-2.

The Stars erased an early 1-0 deficit on Noochie Varner?s solo homer in the second. Varner?s fifth homerun of the year was a monster, nearly reaching the highway beyond a hillside over the leftfield wall. Huntsville grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth, when Ray drew a two-out walk, took third on Alejandro Machado?s hit-and-run single and scored on a wild pitch.

Huntsville?s bullpen carried the day, as starter Ben Hendrickson was removed from the game for precautionary reasons. Hendrickson?s velocity was down, and Stars pitching coach Stan Kyles decided not to take a chance. Hendrickson twice this season has had disabled list stints of a month in length with soreness in his prized right elbow and forearm.

?The bullpen did a solid job. When you have to go to the pen in the second inning and you hold them to two runs, that?s all we can ask of them and more. There are a lot of tired arms down there. They?ve been resilient all year. Whatever we?ve asked them to do, they?ve stepped up,? Kyles said.

Ken Ray provided yeoman?s work out of the pen, authoring five stellar innings, his longest stint of the year. Ray permitted just one run on five hits and one walk while fanning four. Matt Parker (8-6) threw 2 2/3 solid frames but suffered a tough loss, giving up only an unearned run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. Jaxx starter Mike Nannini recorded 10 strikeouts while permitting two runs on three hits and two walks in seven stanzas, and Emanuel Ramirez (3-1) notched the win in relief, surrendering one hit with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

In Saturday night?s game two of the series, Huntsville matches righty Pedro Liriano (7-11, 3.63) against Jaxx right-hander Jon Leicester (5-5, 3.74). Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Calvin Carpenter allowed two first inning runs, but allowing nothing else in his 5-1/3 innings of work for the win. Josh Alliston pitched the final 1-1/3 innings for his seventh save.

The Snappers scored in their first at bat. Lead off hitter Kennard Bibbs reached on an infield single and was sacrificed to second base. Anthony Gwynn singled to leftcenter to drive home Bibbs.

Wisconsin answered right back with two run in the bottom of the first. TJ Bohn chopped an RBI single through the left side of the infield to tie the game. A sacrifice fly by Carlos Arroyo put the Rattlers in front 2-1.

The offenses of both teams were kept quiet until the top of the sixth. Adam Heether singled with two out and nobody on base. Mario Mendez followed with a single and Pedro Esparragoza reached on an error. Terni's single through the right side of the infield put the Snappers in the lead.

In the ninth, the Snappers loaded the bases with no out. Gwynn drove in his second run of the night with an infield single. The final two runs scored on a two out error.

The appearance extends his Triple-A scoreless innings streak to 26 and two-thirds. Jim Rushford with the winning base hit in the bottom of the tenth.

That tops the 23 consecutive scoreless he started with at Huntsville, not counting the unearned run, April 21 vs.Birmingham. I'm anxious to see what he'll do with Milwaukee before the year is out.

Enjoyed my 2nd Snappers game this evening in Apple-ton...

Beloit had a ton of hits early but just could not cash in...Prince has yet to have one real good swing on a ball yet this series, they're busting him inside with fastballs to back him off the plate and then throwing offspeed pitches outside and Prince is out on his front foot hitting them sky high but only to shallow right, i've seen it happen 4 times already this series.

Calvin Carpenter threw well...he certainly had trouble locating his pitches though, numerous 3 ball counts...he battled but had a good outing...Jon Huizinga threw extremely well in his first inning of relief got in a little trouble in the next inning but fought through it.

A much more patient approach for Beloit tonight as compared to yesterday...although Gwynn is batting 3rd...he has a very good makeup for a leadoff hitter, i'm not exaggerating when i say he has fouled off over 15 pitches so far in 2 games, many with 2 strike counts (take into account he's bunted on the first pitch a couple times)

Highlight of the night: Prince swinging at a changeup...becoming off balanced and falling on his backside all the way in the right handed batters box...he swung from his heels and payed the price...a crowd of over 4,000 got a kick out of it...

Forgive my length, but another fun game to watch.

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

No Glaus, No Problem. Quakes Roll

ADELANTO, CA ? The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes didn't need Anaheim Angels third baseman Troy Glaus on Friday night, as they pounded nine runs and 11 hits en route to a 9-4 win over the High Desert Mavericks at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga.

Last year's World Series MVP, who appeared in action against the Mavs on Tuesday and Wednesday, missed his second straight game with pain in his right shoulder.

Tommy Murphy made up for Glaus' absence with a series-best four hits, with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Quakes have now won three of the first five meetings in this seven-game series.

The Mavs took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Ralph Santana reached on an error and later scored from third on a balk by Quakes starter Tim Bittner.

The Quakes quickly tied it in the first as Murphy scored on an RBI single from Mike Eyward. They took the lead for good, as David Gates homered for the third time in his last five games, giving the Quakes a 2-1 lead. They added a run in each of the next two innings, chasing Mavs starter Chad Petty. Petty (0-9) allowed four earned runs on seven hits on the night.

The Quakes blew open the game with four in the fifth against reliever Aaron Dean.

Justin Gordon and Justin Backsmeyer each worked a 1-2-3 inning out of the Mavs bullpen.

The Mavs made a run in the late innings, scoring one in the eighth and two in the ninth. Scott Candelaria's RBI single plated Ozzie Chavez in the eighth.

Trailing 9-2 in the ninth, Todd West's ground ball to short, scored Charlie Lozada, who walked to lead off the ninth. Lozada, who was just called up from the Arizona Brewers, made his debut in the ninth inning by pinch hitting for Jeremy Frost.

Chavez rounded out the scoring by delivering a sac fly to score Johnny Raburn, making it 9-4.

Chris Morris saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end, going 0-2 on the night. Although the season-long streak stopped, Morris reached base three different times with two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

The Mavs look to get back on track, sending Chris Saenz (8-8) to the hill on Saturday night. Steven Shell (6-8) goes for the Quakes. Game time from the Epicenter on Saturday is at 7:15 (9:15 Central).

I believe Weeks went one-for-three and was hit by a pitch, but I don't have any greater details.

Well, the Arizona second baseman did do that, but it was Will Lewis...

If I heard right Weeks batted in a simulated game against Durocher and went 1-3 and was hit, I could be wrong but that's what someone at work heard from Powell

I have little doubt Rickie faced Durocher in a simulated session, it's just funny that the 1-for-3 with a HBP is exactly what Lewis did at the top of the order; who knows, with the reliabilty (or lack thereof) of Arizona box scores lately, maybe that was Weeks...

Shane Nance pitched 2.2 innings of shutout baseball in relief of Martinez to run his own streak of scoreless innings to a team-high 29.0 innings

Yeah, Luis is ALMOST to where Shane is.

Honestly, the idea we are totally wasting this year letting Shane waste away at a level he has been successful at in the past is quite foolish.

He needs consistent work in MIL, not Indy. We're still going to have the same questions about Nance we did last offseason. Pathetic.

Al, I would agree and I assume he'll get called up in September, at least. My gripe with Nance is that, for all his dominance in AAA, he seems to get to Mil. and stop trusting his stuff. He has been a nibbler all year at the big-league level, it would be nice to see him get another shot and just pound the strike zone.
