Link Report for Games of Thursday, August 7th

MassBrew

Thursday's Daily Menu :

Fill your plates, eight box scores to review Friday AM; Brewer matinee today -- partake of the web audio feast tonight!

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville and Beloit within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish.

As for the Arizona Brewers, their playoff situation is unique. According to minorleaguebaseball.com, the Phoenix-area team with the best record plays the Tucson-area team with the best record in a one-game championship. But since there's also a first and second half to the season, we're just way too confused about it, and we'll just track the games http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif , although our boys are 4-2 in the second half thus far...

Game One: Huntsville 3, Mobile (Padres) 2

In this seven-inning contest, the Stars rally in their last at-bat!

In the bottom of the 7th, down 2-0, J.J. Hardy led off with a base hit. After a hard-hit Corey Hart fly-out, Brandon Gemoll doubled Hardy to third. Noochie Varner was intentionally walked, bringing up Brad Nelson. Nelson got his bat on the ball at the very least, reaching first base on an error (poor throw) by the Mobile shortstop. This scored Hardy, and the bases remained loaded.

Kade Johnson was next, and after just missing a game-winning hit down the line (foul by a foot), Johnson struck out. Down to their final out, Chris Barnwell came on to pinch-hit for the pitcher's spot. On a 2-0 count, ball three was mishandled by the Bay Bears' catcher for a passed ball, scoring Gemoll -- tie game. Barnwell walked.

Amazingly, the Mobile closer had to leave the game at this point due to some sort of injury. Tough spot for the new reliever against the Stars' Alejandro Machado. Machado walked on a 3-1 count, driving in the game-winning run. Very unorthodox and pretty lucky, and the Stars steal one here.

Starter Jeff Housman with another very strong start:

6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR

LH Reliever Jeff Hundley gave up what almost was a critical insurance run in the seventh in his Huntsville debut, and actually gets the win.

how 'bout brandon gemoll???

he has been pretty good this year...and id like to give him a high five for being consistent....don't look now, but his ops is higher than Krynzel's

sure, he doesn't walk that much...but he has been better at AA this year than he was in high desert last year...thats gotta mean something

I dont think this guy is a future star..but he could make a decent bat off the bench one day

We're off to a fun start tonight, kids! I've enjoyed some of the best audio moments of the season already here...

In progress, Game One: Billings 3, Helena 3, after seven in Helena (scheduled for seven innings)

Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th, Drew Anderson led off with a walk on a close 3-2 pitch.

Next up, Cap'n Lou Palmisano. On an 0-2 pitch, the Cap'n drives one deep over the LF fence for a two-run blast and a tie ball game.

The Brewers had been out-hit 11-2 entering the 7th!

Manny Ramirez drove the Billings starter from the game with a one-out single. Vinnie Rottino followed with a single of hiw own, putting men on 1st and 2nd with one out. Manuel Melo dribbled a ball in front of the plate, beating out an infield single to load the bases.

Augustin Septimo hit into a 4-2 force out at the plate. Guilder Rodriguez grounded out to end the 7th, smashing his helmet in disgust as he crossed first base.

(Former?) OF Nic Carter came into a tight game as a pitcher in the top of the 7th, making his fourth pitching appearance since joining Helena. Apparently, he was throwing gas, and he struck out a couple of Mustangs' batters.

As of 8:50 PM Central, this one's now in extra innings. Your audio link is above within the Daily Menu.

Nic Carter pitches a 1-2-3 eighth.

Terry Trofholz leadoff bunt single, to second on a wild pitch, to third on a wild pickoff attempt by the Billings catcher. Drew Anderson walks. Cap'n Lou Palmisano intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. Justin Barnes, on to pinch-hit for Barrett Whitney, hits into a 6-2 forceout at the plate. Andri Gomez, who had pinch-run for Manny Ramirez in the 7th, popped out. Vinnie Rottino with a game-winning base hit!

On an unrelated note, Beloit tied up the game 2-2 in the eighth.

Indy Site Game Summary:

TOLEDO, OHIO -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians made it a family affair on Thursday night, defeating the Toledo Mud Hens 2-1 in extra innings as Matt Childers picked up the win for Indianapolis while brother Jason Childers pitched a scoreless tenth inning for the save.

After managing only a single run over the game's first nine innings, the Indians broke through in the first extra frame when Richard Paz singled with two outs to bring home Doug Jennings with the go ahead run on a ground ball through the right side of the infield against Toledo reliever Steve Avery. Jennings, who reached base on a pinch-hit walk against Franklyn German to leadoff the inning, was sacrificed to second by Tribe catcher Alex Delgado, and advanced to third on Jason Conti's groundout to first. Then with two outs, Paz hit what appeared to be a routine grounder to the right side of the Mud Hens infield, but first baseman Kevin Jordan was slow in reacting and was unable to make the play, allowing Jennings to score from third.

Matt Childers, who relieved Tribe starter Ben Ford in the bottom of the eighth, allowed one hit while striking out three Mud Hens in two innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season. Matt (1-0) then gave way to older brother Jason for the final three outs as Jason needed to face only three batters in picking up his eighth save of the season.

Ford, making his fifth start and 22nd appearance for the Tribe, allowed two hits and did not walk a batter in his 7.0 innings, but left with the game tied at 1-1 and did not factor in the decision. Toledo starter Seth Greisinger also pitched a solid ballgame, locking up in a fierce pitchers duel. Both starters left having allowed only one run, both of which came on solo home runs.

Toledo third baseman Brant Ust, a University of Notre Dame product, got the Mud Hens on the board first with a one-out blast to deep left to make the score 1-0. Ford then went on to retire the next 13 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single to Andres Torres in the sixth. In 32.0 innings as a starter this season, Ford has walked only four batters while striking out 27.

Pete Zoccolillo tied the score in the top of the seventh inning when his one-out blast off Greisinger landed beyond the right field fence for his 10th home run of the season. Greisinger pitched 7.2 innings for Toledo before leaving with two outs and two Indians on base in the top of the eighth. German (1-3) pitched out of the jam by getting Jim Rushford to fly out to left before retiring the Indians in the top of the ninth. He was then allowed to start the top of the tenth, but after walking Jennings and recording the first out on Delgado's sacrifice, Avery was brought into the game.

With the win, the Indians (51-67) were able to avoid a sweep of the three-game series at Toledo (59-60). Next up for the Tribe will be a three-game tilt with the Charlotte Knights at Victory Field. Indians lefthander Luis Martinez (3-0) will make his fourth start for the Tribe on Friday as he looks to extend his 20.1 inning scoreless streak against Jon Adkins (7-7, 4.21) and the Knights.

Just got back from the Snappers game.....good pitching matchup.....once Sarfate matures a little bit, I think he has a chance to be very good on a high level....he was throwing 94 consistantly on 2 strike counts.....offensively, their pitcher, T.A. Fulmer was keeping the bats off balance with his 86 mph fastball and good control of his off speed pitches....for being lefties, both Gwynn and Fielder were made to look bad on pitches at their ankles.......Gwynn laid down a perfect bunt for a single, and Crabbe needs to find a position, because he can really hit.....for guys with good numbers, I was disappointed with the stuff of both Baker and Hall - very ordinary.

Does anyone know that Ben Ford pitched to 22 hitters in 7 innings tonight. Does anyone know he was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, for the Yankees, before Tommy John surgery. He was a 1st round expansion pick for the D'Backs and then the Yankees traded to get him back (Darin Holmes) then the Yankees traded him to Cubs for (Glen Allen Hill), who helped them win a world championship. The Brewers could have one of their best pitchers, just wonder if anyone knows it. He used to throw upper 90s and now he's learned how to pitch. Check out his stats. The Brewers better sign him up or he'll be with someone else soon. Or maybe we are so strong on the mound that we just don't need him. At one time he was thought to be the next Jeff Nelson for the Yankees.

I too went to the Snapper game this evening...and let me say that the i'm surprised the umpires made it out alive. Hall got into a jam into the 9th and thought he had gotten out of it with a beautiful pitch which would have ended the inning on a 3-2 count...he called it a ball...the batter end up walking bringing up Gary Harris the Timberrattler leadoff man who hit a base hit to left to win it. Don Money was swearing at the umpires all night long...i had front row seats to the game and i can attest that the homeplate umpire was squeezing the strikezone. The umpires have to walk through the visitors dugout to enter their locker room and the entire Snapper team circled the umps after the game while walking off the field to let them know that they disagreed with the strike zone (profanity laced tryaids)

Sarfate was dominant but actually was on the hook for the loss after tossing a 1 hitter before the late rally..Crabbe is a lotta fun to watch...I can back up the statement that both Prince and Gywnn indeed looked silly on a couple occasions swinging at pitches around their ankles.

Welcome aboard Brewjester, and your right on about Ben Ford. Melvin has had some success finding pitchers who are latebloomers because of injuries (Kolb, Obermueller) , heres to hoping Ford is the next.

Thanks for the first hand Beloit reports, molitor fan and CRicks28!

Brewjester, welcome. Ben Ford won't be added to the 40-man this off-season (most likely), but he would be a nice choice to ink to a AAA deal again once the new offseason signing period begins. (He will be 28 this month.)

Game Two: Huntsville 3, Mobile (Padres) 1

Stars sweep; Corey Hart scores the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of this seven-inning nightcap when he escaped a rundown on a missed squeeze play (throw hit him in the back).

David Nolasco goes six strong innings for his first AA victory; Jeff Hundley with the unique daily-double -- a win in Game One and a save in Game Two -- neither one came easily.

Despite a few hard hit balls by both teams this night, the ball was not carrying in the southern skies. There's just no comparison between Cal and Southern League playing conditions.

Final: High Desert 10, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Offense Explodes in 10-4 Win

ADELANTO, CA ? A five-run fourth inning broke open a close game as the High Desert Mavericks rolled to a 10-4 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium. The win gives the Mavs a split in the four-game series.

High Desert sent ten men to the plate against Austin Bilke in the fourth inning, scoring five times for a 10-4 lead. Scott Candelaria had an infield single to knock in a run, making it 6-4. With Ralph Santana at third and Candelaria at first, the Mavs pulled off the double steal, as Santana swiped home, his third steal of the night. Candelaria later scored on Froilan Villanueva?s second of three hits on the night, making it 8-4. Johnny Raburn?s third hit of the affair knocked in Villanueva for a 9-4 lead. Ozzie Chavez capped the inning with an RBI single, plating Raburn for a 10-4 lead.

Mavs starter Danny Kolb had a rough first inning, giving up an RBI triple to Tommy Murphy as the Quakes took a 1-0 lead. Murphy later scored on an RBI single by Justin Turner to make it 2-0.

Huntsville Site Doubleheader Summary:

www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=264

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

HISTORIC DEBUT FOR HUNDLEY

Mother nature made it impossible for the Stars to play Wednesdsay's game. A late afternoon thundershower made the field unplayable and left nearly a foot of water in the visitors' dugout........ Jeff Hundley had just arrived in town to spell a thinned out pitching staff, now suffering with news that Milwaukee could shut Mike Jones down for the entire year, pending news of stress tests on his sore elbow in Milwaukee, Friday........

The rainout enabled Hundley to set some Stars history Thursday night, as he became the first pitcher since Joe Klink on May 13, 1989, to record a win and a save in a double-header........ Klink, the only Star ever to accomplish this, did it on the road at Knights Stadium in Charlotte in a 6-4, 5-2 sweep......... The historic differrence is that Hundley did it in his debut as a Huntsville Star......... Hundley was 0-1 with a save in 23 appearances at High Desert at the time he was called up.

Hundley filled the roster spot, not of Mike Jones, who was not officially placed on the disabled list, but of Ryan Gripp, who asked for and was given his release....... Gripper, who led the Stars in the month of July by hitting .392 with 3 HRs, had grown frustrated with his role on the bench and lack of playing time. After Brad Nelson arrived and began to play in left, Gripp's mind was made up........ Gripper is also making marriage plans in September, and felt it was aggravation he didn't need....... He was hitting .285 in 67 games, and was 5-for-8 in his last few trips as a pinch-hitter. His contribution to the Stars' first half title should be unquestioned.

In game one, Mobile held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the final inning when the Stars thrilled the crowd with a comeback........ J.J. Hardy led off with a walk, and one out later Brandon Gemoll doubled him to third. Noochie Varner was walked intentionally, then Nelson hit a chopper up the middle....... Shortstop Danny Bravo fielded the ball cleanly, but threw high to first as Hardy scored to narrow Mobile's lead to 2-1........ After Kade Johnson struck out, Chris Barnwell came to the plate in a pinch-hit role, but it was a passed ball that would score Gemoll with the tying run...... Barnwell would walk on four pitches...... Mobile manager Craig Colbert brought in reliever Alan Webb from the bullpen, but after going 3-and-1 on Alejandro Machado, Machado took a pitch low and inside for a walk that forced in Varner for a 3-2 win.

The Stars snapped a scoreless duel in the 4th inning of the second game on a looping single by Mike Kremblas that scored Gemoll from 2nd base....... The Bay Bears, who have played a lot better in the second half, would rally off Dave Nolasco with two out in the 5th....... Humberto Quintero started things with a base hit to right. A sacrifice would put him in scoring position. After Freddie Guzman flied to left, Vince Faison's base hit up the middle scored Quintero to tie the game.

The Stars waited until the 6th inning to make their move....... Shortstop Joe Gerber made a fine dig on a low throw from shortstop Danny Bravo on Corey Hart's grounder, but Corey's long legs got to the bag first on an extremely close play......... Gemoll then singled up the middle, sending Hart to third. Varner forced Gemoll at second........ Kremblas then bunted through an attempted squeeze that forced Corey in a rundown. Hart was a dead duck. Catcher Humberto Quintero chased Corey down, but Rico Washington's throw back to Quintero hit Corey in the back on the numbers, the ball deflecting back to the mound, and Hart scored the go-ahead run....... After Kremblas grounded out to second, moving Varner to second, Barnwell line a ball up the middle, scoring Varner with the insurance run......... All that was left after that was for for Hundley to put the ribbon on a double-header victory. Hundley did hit a batter, but his 7th inning effort was spotless.

The Stars are now an incredible 7-0-3 in double-headers this season, which has to be their best record in their history for twin-bills....... That's including a couple of games where they had to make up a suspended game and there's still one to make up against Chattanooga........ The Stars now travel to Jackson to play the Diamond Jaxx in a four-game series. Ben Hendrickson (5-4, 4.07) will start game one against Diamond Jaxx right-hander Mike Nannini (9-7, 3.80)........ Nannini is 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA vs. Huntsville this season. The Stars have hit .273 off his pitching.

Ryan Knox is now 1-for-17 in August....... Dave Krynzel's first time caught stealing in the 2nd game ended a string of 12 straight stolen base attempts. He hadn't been caught since June 16, but he is still well within a shot of breaking the club's season record of 20 by Luis Polonia in 1985. Krynzel has now been caught 19 times this season....... Brandon Gemoll is 10-for-23 (.435) in August....... Corey Hart is 7-for-19 (.368) in his last 5 games, but now has 93 strikeouts on the season.

Arizona Brewers 8, Arizona Mariners 6

In one of the cruelest hoaxes perpetrated on Brewerfan.net nation in history, the box score for this game, as too frequently is the case in the Arizona League, is "not reported".

Hopefully, we'll learn if Rickie Weeks made his debut last night or not, and also find out how the rest of the Maryvale kids made out.

Argh! Talk about horrible luck. What kind of alternative sources are there? Can we get it directly from the Brewers? Maddening.
