I seem to remember some rule about the arby clock not counting against the same season if the player is brought up in August or later, but I could be wrong about that. Looie has been outstanding in AAA, and seems to have finally "gotten it," whatever that means. I, for one, would love to see him in the 5th spot in the rotation, be damned the arby cost later, if there is any. If you agree with the Bill James thought that there is no real gap between AAA and the majors (which I don't), there shouldn't be a problem anyway, right?

And does this remind anyone else of Nick Neugebauer's 2001 season?

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Lancaster, CA ? Jay Garthwaite's second home run in as many nights gave the Lancaster JetHawks the lead for good, in a come-from-behind 8-4 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Sunday night at the Hangar in Lancaster. The loss for the Mavs keeps them without a series win since early May, as Lancaster takes two of three over the weekend.

Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, the JetHawks began to rally. Danny Richar's RBI single pulled them to within a run at 4-3. With men at first and third and two outs, Garthwaite homered to left field off Mavs reliever Danny Stout (1-1). His 18th homer of the year gave them a 6-4 lead.

Garthwaite, who finished the day with a total of five RBIs, later added an RBI single against Mavs reliever Tony Stavros, in a two-run eighth inning.

The Mavs jumped on top early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first as Chris Morris walked to lead off the frame, and later scored on Scott Candelaria's RBI groundout. Johnny Raburn walked to lead off the second, and after being sacrificed to second, scored on Ozzie Chavez's RBI single, giving the Mavs a 2-0 lead.

Mavs starter Chad Petty had a great start, retiring the first six hitters he faced. He allowed a leadoff double to Mike DiRosa in the third but had a chance to get out of the inning untouched. With two outs, Petty walked three straight men, including Garthwaite to force in a run. Petty kept the lead though, as Steve Neal was retired on a ground ball to first, leaving the bases loaded.

In the fourth, the Mavs capitalized on an error by Danny Richar, and upped the lead to 4-1 against winning pitcher Cliff McMachen (5-2). Raburn's RBI triple plated Froilan Villanueva for a 3-1 lead. Raburn then scored on Jeremy Frost's RBI groundout to make it 4-1.

Petty struggled with his control again in the fourth. He allowed a run and then walked two more batters to load the bases. With two outs in the fourth, Stout was summoned out of the pen, and proceeded to get Dan Uggla to ground into a fielder's choice, which at the time protected a 4-2 lead.

The Mavs only rally came with two outs in the ninth, as Brian Foster walked and Morris doubled down the left field line off JetHawks reliever Carlton Wells. Pete Sikaras came out of the pen, and got pinch hitter Todd West to pop up to end the game, earning Sikaras his 14th save of the year.

The Mavs finish the 10-game road trip at 3-7 and finally return home to Mavericks Stadium on Monday. Rancho Cucamonga sends Steven Schell to the mound, while the Mavs counter with Chris Saenz (8-8) in game one of the four-game series. Game time at Mavericks Stadium is at 7:05 (9:05 Central) on Monday night.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

HART'S SHOT NOT ENOUGH

As if there isn't enough rivalry in this series, there was published in the Sunday morning's Birmingham News, an allegation by Barons manager Wally Backman that the Stars were stealing signs....... Backman's suspicions were based on the Stars' "unusual" success with runners on base in scoring position and with the bases loaded against his club......... Stars manager Frank Kremblas, of course, thought Backman's comments were unfounded and "ridiculous", "If Backman says anything about that at home plate tonight, I'm going to jump down his throat about it, " said Kremblas...... Pitcher Mike Jones said, "Even if we were... we're doing a poor job of it," referring to the lack of success in the series on the offensive side for the Stars, who were able to get just 21 hits over their last 4 games.......

Kremblas also said that Saturday night's last at-bat by J.J. Hardy, in which he was hit in his final plate appearance in the 9th inning, was a purpose pitch....... Hardy, who was hit square on the ass, joked about it and said he wasn't upset about it.

Despite all the uproar over Backman's statements, nothing happened in tonight's game. There was no beanball war. No dugout charges. No words at all. None were needed. Barons' right-hander Enemencio Pacheco spoke with his nasty slider........ Perhaps tempers were cooled off by an unusually long rain delay of 2 hours and 16 minutes.

The Stars took an early first inning lead on a ground ball by Noochie Varner that scored Corey Hart. That carried over until the 4th.......

In the meantime, there was some great defense by the Stars in the early innings. In the bottom of the 2nd with one out and Scott Bikowski on first, Carlos Maldonado hit a 2-0 pitch off his fists to shallow right. Noochie ran in, slid, and peeled the ball off the top of the grass to take a hit away from Maldonado. Bikowski was doubled up and put his hands on his hips in disbelief, believing it was short-hopped......... In the 3rd inning, with two aboard and one away, Chad Durham hit a 3-2 Ben Hendrickson pitch that looked like it would go over the head of Chris Barnwell for a hit. Stars radio voice Robert Portnoy called it such before Barney made an impossible trampoline-like leap to snare the ball and throw to first for a 4-3 double play......... Durham would throw that last dagger however, in the 9th.

Danny Sandoval, leading off the Barons' 4th, tied it up at 1-1 with a home run high over Varner's leap in right field........ Not satisfied with that, Jeremy Reed singled sharply up the middle. Gabe Alvarez then hit a double that fell just a couple of feet fair inside the right field line, and traveled to the 340 mark. Alvarez would score on a 4-3 double play, but the Barons would take a 3-1 lead. They would produce an unearned run off Matt Parker in the 6th to make it 4-1.

The Stars had Ryan Gripp at the plate in the 7th inning with two away, and Varner on first when the Barons gave away the Stars' 2nd run....... Gripp hit a Ryan Meaux 1-1 fast ball over the third base bag that was brought down by Josh Shaffer, who has made 25 errors in split time between third and shortstop. Shaffer's long looping throw was late. Alvarez's throw back across to get Varner was off-line allowing Varner to score........ Shaffer recovered the ball and threw it across the diamond and into the Barons' dugout for the 2nd error, allowing Gripp to go to third........ Mike Kremblas, who cut down two potential basestealers tonight, struck out to end the inning for the Stars, but the two-run deficit would not last for long.

Ryan Meaux gave up a one-out bloop hit to Barnwell. Lefty Matt Smith was then called on to pitch to Corey Hart. Corey, behind 0-2 on the count, got a hold of a hanging breaking ball and hammered it high over the head of Josh Hamilton to tie the game, giving him a league-leading 82 RBIs on the season...... That brings us to the 9th. Mike Adams pitched out of trouble in the 8th after a throwing error by Hart, but he made his own trouble in the 9th after walking Josh Hamilton with one out......... Hamilton, in motion, would race over to third on a two-out bloop hit by Josh Shaffer........ Chad Durham, hitting .306 against the Stars with 10 RBIs, mostly as a leadoff hitter, hit a 2-1 breaking ball up the middle off the outstretched glove of Barnwell to win the game.

Hendrickson threw 71 pitches in his four innings of work, throwing 49 for strikes (69%)........ The Stars come back home Monday to face Mobile, who just took three games of a five-game series with the Diamond Jaxx. Pedro Liriano (7-10, 3.07) will be the likely starter for the Stars. Cory Stewart (10-6, 3.35) will start for Mobile........

Ben Diggins will undergo Tommy John surgery on his elbow. His season is over and possibly next year's as well. Diggins made 8 starts for the Stars this season, going 3-2 with a 2.36 ERA........ Luis Martinez is picking up where he left off at Huntsville. He and former Star Jason Childers combined on a 3-hit, 1-0 shutout over the Durham Bulls, the first place team in the International League's South Division. Martinez struck out 10 in 8 innings.

SportsTicker with some love for Looie:

INDIANAPOLIS (INT) LHP LUIS MARTINEZ worked eight shutout innings to extend his scoreless streak to 21 1/3 as the Indians blanked the Durham Bulls, 1-0. Martinez yielded just three hits, struck out 10 men and walked three, facing just two batters over the minimum.

The 6-6 southpaw fanned the first three men he faced and stranded a runner at third to end the eighth inning, preserving the one-run cushion before exiting the game.

In three starts with Indianapolis since a promotion from the Huntsville Stars of the Class AA Southern League, Martinez has yet to allow a run through 20 1/3 innings, striking out 23 men and earning the win in each outing. The 23-year-old Dominican gained the promotion with an 8-5 record and an ERA of 2.58 for Huntsville, holding opponents scoreless for 21 innings over his first four starts with the Stars earlier this season.

Is anyone else daydreaming about a Looie to Looie battery in Milwaukee for years to come....ahhh the sweet sounds of Loooooooo when Martinez pitches and then Loooooo when Captain Lou tosses it back to him. 2006 a possibility??

Luis will probably be in the Milwaukee rotation come 2004.

Put him through the Arizona Fall League, and see how he does in spring training.

He does well, then we have a rotation of Sheets, Franklin, Kinney, Davis, and Martinez. Kinney and Davis would be issues, but I think it will look a lot more solid than this year's rotation - unless Davis and Kinney collapse.

I would assume Melvin would go out and make SOME sort of acquisition (perhaps a flyer on a Todd Richie type) than stick with that rotation. I don't forsee Doug Davis in a Brewers uniform next year, but I could be wrong.

You would think Sheets and Martinez (assuming he's called up) would be the only certainties in the rotation, with Franklin and Kinney as maybe's).

Franklin's been pretty good. I consider him to be pretty solid, IMO, albeit I'd prefer to have him a little lower. Davis also looks like he could be pretty solid in the 4th or 5th slot. And if they are signed to one-year deals, we aren't on the hook for that much.

Kinney's the only guy I'd question, and I think there might be in-house candidates (Obermuller, Lee, and Coco for sure, possibly even Hendrickson and Jones, if we really want to take a risk) who could compete for a slot.

A lot depends on whether we want to bring Hardy, Krynzel, and others up as well. I'm very sure that I could put together a good 2004 bench from some of the folks in AAA (Scarborough, Luuloa, Zocco, Rushford, and Conti are all guys I like - Conti might be a good 4th OF, IMHO).

Davis a solid #4 or #5? He couldn't stick with the Rangers or the Blue Jays, how do you expect him to actually be considered an option for the Brewers in '04?

And if he is an option, why do you think he's at AAA right now? It's one thing if he's an emergency option, it's another if we're pencilling him into our opening day roster for next year today. And for now, no thanks.

Davis has been decent prior to this year. He'd cost a lot less, and if he gets to his earlier form, that's a 4.50 ERA (ERAs run higher in the AL due to the DH - sorry for mentioning those who abbreviations, but it might be important for this comparison).

I think he'd be no worse than Wayne Franklin. And Franklin's been pretty solid since May 1. Davis and Franklin would not be spectacular, but they could keep us in games.

Would we even want him in the AFL? That would be a whole lot of innings on his arm, especially if the Brewers are seriously considering having him in the 2004 rotation come April.

Checking his stats, he already has 25 more innings pitched this year then last year, with two months of the season left. Then if you toss on AFL or a Dominican league he could easily throw 100 more innings then last year. That just doesn't seem to be the most intelligent thing for an organization to do with a young pitcher.

RE: Davis

I agree, Patrick... Davis has some potential, but we signed him to add depth, not quality. He's actually got a bit of MLB experience, too, which is nice to have at the Triple-A level. I don't know anything about his contract, but I assume its similar to Joe Roa's... if he gets a MLB contract offer, he can take it.
