Three evening audio alternatives for you, and nice choices to check out among the three starting pitchers going in tonight's action...

Indy Honors Jim Rushford:

Jim Rushford has been named the Indianapolis Indians Player of the Month for July and will receive a specially-designed commemorative watch from Windsor Jewelers prior to tonight's game.

Rushford led the Indians in three offensive categories in July. The 29-year-old paced the team with 31 base hits, 19 runs batted in and 11 walks. In 27 games during the month, Rushford batted .298 with three doubles, three home runs and 12 runs scored.

Rushford, who saw action at first base, left field and right field in July, posted 12 multi-hit games and reached base safely in 24 of 27 games. For the season, he ranks fifth in the International League with a .316 batting average.

Rushford was the Indians Most Valuable Player in 2002 when he led the team with a .316 average, 128 hits, 33 doubles, 68 RBI and a .391 on-base percentage. He was also honored as the team's player of the month last July.

The Indians select a player of the month each month from April-August. The winning player receives a special watch from Windsor Jewelers. Outfielder Mark Smith, pitcher David Manning and outfielder Pete Zoccolillo have previously been honored this season. At the end of the season, Windsor Jewelers will present the Indians Most Valuable Player with a championship-style diamond ring.

Beloit 5, Dayton (Reds) 4

Beloit Game Summary (Once again, we turn to the Dayton site):

Beloit, WI - The Beloit Snappers (29-14, 61-49) broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a bases loaded walk that forced in what would be the winning run in a 5-4 Beloit win over the Dayton Dragons (19-24, 54-59) Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. The loss is the fourth in a row for the Dragons on the road and the second straight overall.

Gorky Batista (L, 1-1) got the ball for the Dragons and avoided the first inning pratfalls that hampered the Saturday night start of Thomas Pauly, in the first game of the series. The second inning was a different story for Batista and the Dragons, as the Snappers picked up a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly from Pedro Esparragoza and a Dayton error by third baseman Ivan Reyes. After two innings, Beloit led 2-0.

Dayton came back to tie the game in the top half of the third off Snapper starter Luis Pena. Reyes reached on a single and moved to second base on a ball booted by Beloit shortstop Chas Terni. After a Tulio Araque sacrifice bunt moved the runners along, Hector Mateo pushed a bunt down the first base line that was good for an RBI single and the Dragons were within 2-1. Kevin Howard knocked home the equalizer, as he reached on a fielder?s choice that scored Manny Paula, who had reached on the Terni error.

The Snappers snapped the tie with single tallies in the third and the fourth off Batista. Prince Fielder bounced into a 4-6-3 double play with runners on first and third with none down to give Beloit the 3-2 lead. In the fourth inning, DH Adam Heether got into the act with an RBI groundout, again off Batista, as the Snappers extended the lead to 4-2.

The Dragons tied the game at 4-4 with a two out rally in the top of the fifth inning, the last that Pena would throw. With two down and none on, Mateo picked up a bloop double into center field. Howard joined him on base after a free pass and Dayton had the makings of a rally. Jarrod Schmidt came through with one of his three hits on the afternoon, as he slammed a double over the head of Beloit left fielder Kennard Bibbs. Both Mateo and Howard scored on the two base hit and the game was tied up.

Beloit broke the tie for the final time in the home half of the seventh inning. After Terni struck out to lead off the inning, Bibbs picked up a one out single off Batista. With one out and a runner at first, Manager Donnie Scott called on Matt McWilliams out of the Dragons pen. McWilliams walked Callix Crabbe on four pitches putting runners at first and second. Tony Gwynn Jr., moved the runners up on a ground out for the second out of the inning. Not wanting to get burned by the MWL leader in HR and RBI, Fielder was intentionally walked to load the bases. With the sacks full, there was no place to put Travis Hinton, so when McWilliams walked his third hitter of the inning, the Snappers plated a run and took the 5-4 lead.

Jon Huizinga (W, 2-0) replaced Pena to start the sixth inning and was perfect through two innings of work, six up and six down, including four ground balls and a strike out as he picked up the win. Tim Bausher (S, 1) tossed a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to notch his first save as a Snapper.

The Dragons continue the four game series against the Beloit Snappers Monday night at Pohlman Stadium in Beloit Wisconsin with a 7 PM first pitch. 1410 EPSN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 PM. RHP Kyle Lucas will make the start for Dayton while Beloit will start Manny Parra.

Anybody listening to Indy? I'm giving Chad Petty and the Mavs my audio attention tonight.

Looks like it's three tremendous starts for Luis Martinez. See you in a Brewer uniform Friday night, kid.

Help!

The link to the Indy station is not working. I keep getting a SQL server error when I try to follow the link. It happens in both IE 6 & Netscape 7.1. Brian, is there another way to get to the site w/o getting that error?

Thanks Massbrew!

Unfortunately, the game is in the 9th inning. Well at least I can hear Childers finish it up.

In progress: High Desert 4, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 2, after four innings

Unfortunately, the miserable, miserable season for LHP Chad Petty continues.

After coasting through the first two innings (six up, six down), Petty ran into control troubles in both the third and fourth innings. He was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the third allowing only one run. RHP Danny Stout had to come in to get the final out in the fourth however, again with the bases loaded, after Petty had allowed another run.

Petty's final line:

3.2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 5 BB, 2 K

Petty was handed a 2-0 lead going into the third and a 4-1 lead into the fourth. Pretty inexcusable to once again have to tax the bullpen early now.

And we are all left to wonder more about Petty's lofty Power 50 status http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Helena Site Game Summary:

After being rocked by the Brewers in his first two starts, Great Falls White Sox ace Brandon McCarthy silenced the Brewers in his second consecutive start against Helena, going seven innings only allowing two runs. Great Falls topped Helena 4-3 at Legion Field in Great Falls. Helena is now 2-5 in the second half. Barret Whitney was thrown out at the plate, becoming the thrid Helena base runner to be hosed at the plate in the last two games.

Terry Trofholz went two-for-four with his 18th multiple hit game of the season. Manny Ramirez continued his hot streak going three-for-three with a solo shot in the seventh. Whitney chipped in going one-for-three with an RBI double.

Kenny Durost started for the Brewers going four innings allowing two runs and eight strikeouts before reaching his pitch count. Ricky Stover pitched four innings of relief allowing two runs while striking out five.

Helena and Great Falls go back at it again Monday night at 7:00 PM (8:00 Central).

After a very lengthy rain delay prior to the start of this one, the Stars and Barons are underway.

If you're reading this around "post time" (9:00 PM) and haven't checked out a Stars broadcast yet lately, use the link in the Daily Menu above to check out Ben Hendrickson and the rest of the Huntsville crew.

You just know that Jones, Hendrickson, Liriano, et. al, are looking at this and thinking, "How tough can AAA be?"

Luis Martinez' in three AAA starts:

20.1 IP, 16 H, 6 BB, 23 K, no earned runs, no runs at all

And yes, we've mailed the dude at Baseball America with the Hot Prospect Sheet to remind him http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

3 great starts don't justify a promotion to the big leagues

Let him continue to develop the rest of the season, maybe he can grow further in Indy.

Theres plenty of time left on his clock, Im just glad the Crew has a successful arm very close to the majors

I agree with nikip, no need to rush Martinez. Calling him up in September when the rosters expand is early enough. Depending how he does next spring of course, I also would like to see him start the season in AAA.

However, I have to believe the Brewers will feel the urge to bump him up. Didn't they feel the urge to bump him up from AA a couple of weeks ago?

I'd like to know what happened between last year & this year that caused this young man to put things together? I'm not used to watching players that have tons of potential without the numbers to match actually turn their promise into production.

Final: Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 8, High Desert 4

The JetHawks got to reliever Danny Stout in the sixth inning, and Tony Stavros allowed two insurance runs in the eighth.

Like their parent club, the Mavericks complete a 3-7 road trip.

High Desert has not won a series in three months.

Yeah, you read that right. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Yeah, it seems very likely that he'll be in Milwaukee by the end of the week. If not, I can't imagine Manning getting more than one more start... at which point, Martinez is the guy.

As for the "do promote/don't promote" debate, I'm not sure. Of course 3 starts doesn't in itself earn a promotion... but it's not like he was pitching poorly at Huntsville before making his way to Indy. Luis has put together a solid season's worth of starts between the two levels.

I would normally advocate patience and erring on the side of more time in the minors, but three things complicate that perspective for me in this specific case:

1> He will get to start every fifth day whether he is in Milwaukee or Indy. Unlike a position player like Billy Hall or a reliever like Shane Nance, he won't spend his time with Milwaukee as a late-inning replacement that rarely plays. As a result, he will get the same amount of work at either level... so as far as his development goes, I don't know how much difference it makes.

2> The Brewers don't really have any other viable options. Perhaps Coco or Davis, but not really. If Manning struggles and both Rusch and Ford are still on the DL, the only MLB-level option is Burba. While that would make sense, it seems like Yost et. al. aren't willing to use him as a starter, preferring to keep him in the pen to eat useless innings in blowouts.

3> Martinez is old enough that pitching in the majors isn't unheard of. Plenty of guys have gotten some starts for the first time at age 23 or earlier... and as long as the club is diligent about his workload and his conditioning, everything should be fine. I don't think there is any real significant increase in the chance of an injury between AAA and the MLB.

Also, he's on the 40-man roster and would only accumulate less than two months of service time. Something to consider, at least.

I'm still not sure its a good idea, but I think its pretty much guaranteed to happen. And really, its not the worst thing in the world... and it could very likely turn out for the best.

Thoughts?

My bad. I think I'm thinking of Derek Lee in regards to the AA pitcher the Brewers considered bumping straight up to Milwaukee. And I'd probably bump him up from Indy before Martinez. Same goes for Doug Davis & possibly even Coco. Without a doubt I would call up Martinez among others in September. Heck, they could really do something revolutionary at the big-league level by calling up as many AAA starters as possible & have them piggy-back with one another, especially since Indy won't be in the playoffs. Davis, Martinez, Coco, Manning, Lee, Ford & Obermueller collectively could fill at least 3 spots in the rotation, and you might have some fans driving up from Indy to see that happen.

I think I was snakebit hard the past few seasons with Brewers seeing success in the minors & immediately bumping a player up. Let him enjoy that success in Indy & let him prove that he's not a fluke. He was great in AA as well, but I want to make sure that he keeps his walk totals down. If he comes up to Milwaukee & starts walking people like he has in the past, he's not going to enjoy much success.

And no, it's not the worst thing in the world that could happen. It has nothing to do with his stuff, experience or how old he is. When faced with such a decision I would like to see the Brewers continue to ride on the safe side instead of their recent tendencies.

I really think the Brewers would do no harm in bringing up Martinez to face Florida Friday.

While Nick Neugebauer's arrival was totally botched by the Crew, you can't compare this potential call-up to that of David Pember, Ben Diggins, or Matt Childers last year.

Luis has accomplished so much more this year, and what better time to bring him up than when his stuff and confidence are at all-time highs?

This happens all the time, most often with top pitching prospects bypassing AAA altogether (see a certain pitcher named Dontrelle).

Martinez has never been injured, he's 23, and he hasn't allowed a run in his three AAA starts.

It's him or David Manning.

Will this ruin Luis? Hardly.

And no talk about service time, please.

Looie on Friday -- book it.
