Monday's Daily Menu :

One daytime choice, one night-time choice, so we make it easy for you...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

HUNTSVILLE: LHP Jeff Hundley at West Tenn (Cubs), 12:05 PM; enjoy the game in the office -- pre-game at 11:50; these numbers are less than impressive, except that the Stars do more with less, ninth in hitting, third in runs scored:

Penned by our very own Kaukana (a.k.a. J.R.), this fantastic article includes extensive quotes by Gwynn, Melvin, and Nichols.

In other news, Prince Fielder and Manny Parra were named Brewers' minor league players of the month for July.

Getting Their Due - Tom Haudricourt, JS Online

First baseman Prince Fielder and left-hander Manny Parra, both of Class A Beloit, were named the Brewers' minor-league player and pitcher of the month for July.

Fielder, a first-round draft pick in 2002, batted .339 with 12 home runs, 34 RBI, 22 runs scored, a .720 slugging percentage and .420 on-base percentage. Parra went 3-0 with a 2.21 ERA in six starts, with six walks and 28 strikeouts in 362/3 innings.

Brewers fans can watch Fielder on Thursday when Beloit takes on (Apple-ton) in a Midwest League game at 6:30 p.m. at Miller Park.

Parra was scheduled to start that game for the Snappers but probably will be scratched. He is scheduled to be examined today by Brewers physician William Raasch for shoulder stiffness.

No. 1 pick debuts: - Adam McCalvy, MLB.com

Rickie Weeks went 2-for-4 with four RBIs in his professional debut on Sunday and will join Single-A Beloit on Tuesday.

Weeks, the Brewers' top pick in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, knocked a pair of two-run singles on Tuesday for the rookie-level Arizona Brewers, who are based at the Brewers' Spring Training facility in Phoenix. He collected three more hits in a simulated game on Wednesday, then boarded a flight to join Beloit. The Snappers are scheduled to play the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (SEA) at Miller Park at 6:30 p.m. CT on Thursday.

Keeping up with Jones: - Adam McCalvy, MLB.com

Melvin reported some "encouraging news" from a radiologist who examined an MRI of right-hander Mike Jones' elbow.

Contrary to an earlier diagnosis, the radiologist saw no signs of tears and instead called the injury a slight ligament sprain with swelling. Jones, the Brewers' top draft pick in 2002, traveled to Phoenix for rest and will be re-examined in about a month.

Huntsville 5, West Tenn (Cubs) 2

Bit of a scare in the ninth but the Stars, despite being outhit, get one back in the win column. Solid start from Jeff Hundley but the left-hander only lasted 4 innings. Brian Adams allowed two unearned runs but fellow-Adams Mike picked him up and got the save after retiring only one batter. Two hits for Machado but the second-baseman also committed an error. Krynzel and Hardy both 1-for-3 with a walk, the former adding a steal and the latter's hit a double. Hundley was 1-for-1 with a steal... not bad for a pitcher.

In Progress: High Desert 3, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2, bottom of the 7th in Rancho

Over 30 folks on the board as we post, so feel free to listen in to the final innings of this one.

Ralph Santana drives in Charlie Lozada with the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th; the 18-year-old Lozada holding his own behind the plate tonight and has walked three times in four Maverick plate appearances over two games.

Mike Lindskog in fine form tonight -- he admits allergy medicine has him a bit loopy this evening. Still getting the job done, though -- he did just make the very astute observation that Olive Garden's lunch portions are much smaller than their dinner entrees. Very true, Michael http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

LOL... I think Mike should be "called up" to fill in for Uecker the rest of the season. It will be rough if our affiliation with High Desert does not get renewed... I can't imagine what Lindskog would sound like doing a good team's games. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Lancaster, CA - The Lancaster JetHawks scored three runs in their final at-bat, beating the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 5-4 on Monday night at the Hangar in Lancaster. The come-from-behind win gives the JetHawks a victory in the first of four straight with the Mavs.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Lancaster's Jay Garthwaite doubled to open the inning against Mavs reliever Aaron Dean. After Dean (5-5) issued a walk to Kyle Nichols, he got Edgar Varela to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. After another walk to Mike Thiessen, Dean allowed a two-out single to Dan Firlit, tying the game at 3-3. Mike DiRosa followed with a single giving the JetHawks a 4-3 lead. They added an important insurance run, as Danny Richar singled off of Danny Stout to make it 5-3.

The Mavs fell short in the ninth, scoring once, but leaving the tying run on base. John Toner doubled with one out and scored on Charlie Lozada's two-out single, his first hit and RBI as a Maverick. JetHawks reliever Pete Sikaras then settled down and got Ralph Santana to ground out to end the game. Sikaras picked up his League-leading 17th save of the year by recording the final three outs.

Mavs starter Dan Hall had his best outing in over a month, working five innings, while allowing just two runs on six hits. Hall left with the game tied at 2-2, turning it over to Dean.

The team's exchanged runs in the first, as Froilan Villanueva collected his first of two RBI singles on the night. Lancaster countered wiith a sac fly from Jay Garthwaite, scoring Marland Williams to tie the game at 1-1.

The JetHawks took the lead in the fifth at 2-1, as Marland Williams picked up his third hit of the night, and later scored on Garthwaite's two-out double.

High Desert scored a run in the top of the sixth off JetHawks starter Mike Schultz to tie the game at 2-2, as Villanueva's run-scoring single scored Scott Candelaria from second base. After Dean worked a scoreless sixth, the Mavs took the lead at 3-2, as Santana's two-out double scored Lozada in the seventh.

Billy Biggs (1-5) worked a scoreless eighth inning for his first win this year.

The Mavs failed to win their second straight game for what would have been only the second time in the second half. With the loss, they now fall to 13-38 in the second half, and just 38-83 overall.

The Mavs try to get back on track on Tuesday night as Danny Kolb (5-9) takes on Lancaster's John Castellanos (5-1). Game time from the Hangar is at 7:15 (9:15 Central).

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

BACK ON TOP

Despite a roster expansion, the Stars had no well of starters to go to, so it was up to spot starter Jeff Hundley (0-1, 4.29 at High Desert in 22 relief appearances) and the bullpen to even the final series with the Diamond Jaxx and keep the Stars on pace, and possibly overtake Birmingham in the Western Division race.......

Manager Frank Kremblas and pitching coach Stan Kyles, answering the problems of a sore-armed rotation, has been leaning a lot on the bullpen in the 2nd half and getting hoped-for results....... Ken Ray has thrown 11 2/3 innings in his last three appearances, and given up just three runs. Mike Adams threw three scoreless innings in relief a week ago, and just after the start of the 2nd half, threw 5 1/3 no-hit innings in relief. Matt Childers, before his promotion, gave up just one run in 12 2/3 innings in his last four appearances. Matt Parker has not allowed a single run in three appearances covering 7 2/3 innings this month........

But as good as these pitchers have been, none has matched the recent success of Brian Adams........ Super-refreshed after not having pitched in over a week, Kremblas gave him his longest outing since June 21 when he threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against Greenville, holding the Diamond Jaxx scoreless until he tired in the 9th, and enabling the Stars to win the final meeting of the year with the last-place Jaxx, 5-2........ The effort also put them back in 1st place, as Birmingham lost again to Chattanooga, 3-0........ In his last 7 outings, B.A., as he's known in the clubhouse, has gone 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA.

The Stars scored early, but ended a string of scoring in the 2nd inning at three games....... The Stars wasted little time in the 1st. With one out, Dave Krynzel singled sharply to right. J.J. Hardy laced one to left and high off the wall for a double. Krynzel was waved around and outran the relay throw........ In the 3rd, Jeff Hundley, batting for the first time in his professional career, singled. Hundley spent the last five seasons in the Anaheim Angels organization....... Alejandro Machado followed with a single to left. After Krynzel sacrificed the runners into scoring position, a wild pitch, with J.J. at bat, scored Hundley and moved Machado to third....... Hardy walked putting runners on the corners, but Brad Nelson fouled out and Brandon Gemoll flied out to left to end the inning for Huntsville.

In the 4th, leading 2-0 with a couple of runners aboard, Kade Johnson hit a line drive over the leaping Brandon Harris, scoring D.J. Clark....... Hundley sacrificed, sending runners to second and third and that set up the blow that sucked the wind out of the Diamond Jaxx....... Alejandro Machado extended his hit streak to 6 games, by driving a ball down the right field line, rattling at the base of the wall for a two-run double that scored Chris Barnwell and Johnson. That carried the day. The defense took over from there........

With one out in the bottom of the 4th, Jackson Melian walked and Donnie Hood singled. Casey Kopitzke hit a ground ball deep in the hole at second base. Machado, on the grass to his left, fielded the ball, spun around and threw on target to J.J. to get one and Hardy threw to get a gorgeous 4-6-3 double play to end the threat......... In the 5th with two out, the Diamond Jaxx loaded the bases, but Brian Adams speared a Ray Sadler liner to end the inning....... Through five innings, the Diamond Jaxx stranded eight runners. By the time Adams entered the 9th, he had retired 10 of 11 batters.

Brian Adams, scoreless in four frames, was so close to making it five........ After getting Donnie Hood on a fly deep to left, Casey Kopitzke popped a 2-2 pitch to Machado, who tried to make a basket catch against a high sky and dropped it off the heel of his glove....... Aron Weston forced Kopitzke out on a sharply hit grounder to Chris Barnwell........ One out away now, Mike Dzurilla walked on five pitches, moving the speedy Weston to second....... Adams, with one more out to get, still had his overhand curve working well and a 88 mph fast ball........ But he couldn't retire Blair Barbier. His line drive base hit to center scored Weston. Brendan Harris followed with a first-pitch grounder that kicked off Barnwell's glove for a hit, a tough play that Barney has made before. The ball dribbled into left and Dzurilla scored........ Mike Adams came in from the bullpen, though, and needed only two pitches to retire Jason Dubois on a popout for his 12th save, matching Matt Childers' club high of last year.

Southpaw Jeff Housman (3-0, 1.46) will start the first game of the Stars' four-game series vs. Chattanooga on Auburn Football Giveaway Night at the Joe......... The Lookouts just finished taking three out of four from the 1st place Barons, and have won 8 of their last 10.

The news on Mike Jones is good........ The final results on his MRI came in and Jones was diagnosed with an elbow strain. He will begin a rehab program within the week.
