Tuesday's Daily Menu :

Back to a full plate -- the Olive Garden dinner portion, if you willl...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

IndyIndians.com game notes:

TONIGHT: The Indians embark on their final "air" trip of the 2003 season with two games at Norfolk and two games at Charlotte. The Indians are coming off a three-game homestand against Charlotte on which they won two of three.

The Indians and Tides are meeting for the first time since early July when the teams split a four-game set at Victory Field. The teams also split four games at Harbor Park in early May. The Indians went 2-10 against the Tides last season.

Since July 23, 15 of the Tribe's 20 games have come against opponents from the IL's South division. The Indians are 8-7 in these recent match-ups, but are still just 19-22 against South foes for the season.

The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 11 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .245 and have scored 29 runs (2.6 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in six of the 11 games.

The Indians have played five extra-inning contests in August going 3-2 in those games. Three of the last four games have gone into extra frames with the Tribe winning all three.

ROSTER MOVES: RHP David Manning has been added to the roster after being outrighted from Milwaukee on Sunday. The Brewers have purchased the contract of LHP Doug Davis. He will start Saturday at Pittsburgh.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 7-7 in that stretch, including a 6-5 mark at Victory Field. The final 16 games of the year will be against IL West rivals.

SUNDAY: The Indians defeated Charlotte 4-3 in 11 innings. Steve Scarborough, who was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, doubled with two outs in the 11th before Jason Conti singled him home. Scarborough tripled in two runs and scored in the fifth as the Tribe rallied from a three-run deficit to tie the game. Four Indians relievers turned in six shutout innings.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 24th start for the Indians. Coco also leads the squad with eight wins, 121.1 innings pitched and 85 strikeouts. This will be Coco's second start against the Tides in 2003. He limited Norfolk to one run over eight innings at Victory Field on July 9, but did not get a decision in a 5-3 loss. Coco won seven consecutive decisions over 12 starts from May 4 - June 28, but is 0-3 in six starts since. In his last two starts, Coco is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. At the plate, Coco tops the Tribe pitching staff with four base hits. He is hitting .267 and brings a four-game hitting streak into tonight's contest.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth with a .319 average and fourth with a .388 on-base percentage. David Manning is tied for third with 56 bases on balls. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers haven thrown out 57.7% of would-be basestealers.

SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS: LHP Luis Martinez and Shane Nance are boasting impressive scoreless innings streaks. Martinez, who was promoted from Double-A on July 24, has made four starts and has yet to allow a run in 26.1 innings. He has fanned 28 while walking 10. Nance, who has had two stints in Milwaukee this season, has not allowed a run since May 16. In 22 appearances since May 23, Nance has worked 31.0 scoreless innings. In that period he has allowed just 13 hits and five walks while striking out 23.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Alex Delgado has a season-high nine-game hitting streak.

BROTHERLY LOVE: RHPs Jason and Matt Childers are the first set of brothers to wear Indians uniforms at the same time since Aaron and Bret Boone suited up for the Tribe in 1997. The Boones were in the Indianapolis lineup together for just one day - June 19. Bret was optioned to Indy that day. Aaron was recalled by Cincinnati the next day. Jason saved Matt's first Triple-A win on August 7 at Toledo. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that feat has not happened in Major League Baseball since saves became an official statistic in 1969. The Childers brothers have previously been teammates in 1997 (Helena), 1998 (Beloit), 2000 (Mudville) and 2001 (Huntsville).

THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti leads the league with 16 outfield assists. The last time an IL outfielder recorded 17 assists was in 1999 when Chad Mottola and Anthony Sanders tied for the league lead with 17. The last IL outfielder with 18 assists was Toledo's Jimmy Hurst in 1997. When the Indians were in the American Association, New Orleans' Kevin Koslofski had 19 assists in 1995.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Wednesday at Norfolk - RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 2.82) vs. LHP Mike Bacsik (1-7, 4.73)

Thursday at Charlotte - LHP Luis Martinez (3-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Jon Adkins (7-7, 3.91)

Friday at Charlotte - TBA vs. RHP Ryan Kohlmeier (7-4, 4.34)

Indy Site Game Summary:

NORFOLK, VA -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians shutout the Norfolk Tides 1-0 in the first of a two-game series at Norfolk on Tuesday evening. Indians pitchers Pasqual Coco, Shane Nance, and Jason Childers combined to limit the Tides to only five baserunners in the game to combine on the three-hit shutout.

Tribe catcher Cody McKay scored the game's only run in the top of the fifth inning after leading off the frame by being plunked on the shoulder on a pitch from Norfolk starter Tyler Yates. McKay then stole second base before Yates (1-2) issued a one-out walk to Steve Scarborough. With runners on first and second, Tribe starting pitcher Coco stepped to the plate riding a four game hitting streak. Coco then lined a single to center field off Yates to extend his streak, and on the single Norfolk's centerfielder Esix Snead had the ball go off his glove allowing McKay to score easily from third base on the error.

Coco (9-7) earned the win pitching 7.0 innings allowing only three hits while striking out three. Norfolk had only two baserunners reach as far as third base in the game, and the closest the Tides came to scoring was in the bottom of the seventh inning when Prentice Redman walked with one out and advanced to second on a single one batter later. With one out Norfolk's Kenny Kelly then hit a grounder right between the legs of Indians third baseman Keith Luuloa. The ball rolled into left field where it was fielded by Ryan Knox. As Redman rounded third base, Knox's relay throw to home plate was caught by Cody McKay and the tag applied to prevent Redman from scoring the tying run.

Shane Nance relieved Coco to start the eighth inning and retired all three batters he faced to extend his team-high scoreless streak to 32.0 innings.

Jason Childers pitched the final inning for the Indians retiring Major League All-Star Mike Piazza on a flyball to right field leading off the inning. Childers then got Russ Johnson to ground out to short, and struck out Prentice Redman for the final out of the game to record his ninth save of the season. Piazza, who started at catcher and batted third for Norfolk as part of a rehab assignment for the New York Mets, was 0-for-4 in the game.

With the shutout, the Indians as a team have not allowed a run in 19.1 innings, dating back to Mike Rivera's two-out home run in the first inning of the Tribe's 4-3 victory in 11 innings on Sunday versus Charlotte.

The Indians (54-68) and Tides (56-67) will conclude the two-game series on Wednesday night when the Tribe sends righthander Ben Ford (3-3, 2.82) to the mound to face lefty Mike Bacsik (1-7, 4.73) and Norfolk. The Indians will then travel to Charlotte for two games before returning to Indianapolis on Saturday to conclude the season series with Norfolk in a two-game set at Victory Field.

The Beloit site summary is correct, Weeks went 1-3.

The Rattlers' radio guy said 1-4 but the sac fly is not an at-bat so it is offically 1-3.

Personally, I can't stand listening to Beloit/Wisconsin games, all that guy does is read off stats and scores from every game played that night from just about every league. You can hardly tell there's a game going on in the background with him talking about the Devil Rays/Os game.

In progress: Chattanooga (Reds) 3, Huntsville 3, after 12 innings

A thin and tired bullpen spent once again for the Stars; Kenny Ray, with an extended 5+ inning relief appearance just a couple of days ago, just wrapped up a scoreless three-inning stint. We're at the point now where pitcher Jeff Hundley, who just had his first pro at-bat yesterday, was used as a pinch-hitter for Ray in the 12th.

Note to Milwaukee: AAA and AA rosters were eligible to be expanded by one to 24 on Monday. Hello?!

Note to Milwaukee - AAA and AA rosters were eligible to be expanded by one to 24 on Monday. Hello?!

LOL... I was just thinking that, too. To make matters worse, Corey Hart was available only as an emergency pinch-hitter because of a food poisoning incident. Noochie Varner is absolutely raking tonight, though... and it appears that Hardy is getting hot again.

Good stuff.

Oh, and I guess Hundley's plate appearance yesterday was his first ever. This kind of stuff is expected in High Desert... but Huntsville? I thought this was the affiliate we liked. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 7, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Lancaster, CA - Lancaster starting pitcher John Castellanos dominated the High Desert hitters on Tuesday night, working into the eighth inning, in earning the victory in a 7-2 win over the High Desert Mavericks at the Hangar in Lancaster. The loss leaves the Mavs with a two-game losing streak and a second half mark of just 13-39.

Castellanos (6-1) shut out the Mavs through seven full innings, finally leaving before recording an out in the eighth. The Mavs had just five hits in seven innings against the right hander, who was charged with a run after leaving the game.

Mavs starter Danny Kolb (5-10) threw well but was a victim of no run support. Kolb went five innings, allowing three runs while scattering ten hits. He struck out eight, while walking just one.

The JetHawks took the lead against Kolb in the third, as Kyle Nichols doubled to right to knock in Mike Thiessen. Edgar Varela's bloop single to left plated Jay Garthwaite as the JetHawks took a 2-0 lead.

Lancaster added another against Kolb in the fourth, as Danny Richar tripled and scored on a wild pitch, giving the JetHawks a 3-0 lead.

Castellanos cruised through the first six innings, allowing just four total base runners. Traling 5-0 in the eighth, Chris Morris walked to open the frame. After Billy Biggs came out of the Lancaster bullpen, Jeremy Frost's sac fly to center put the Mavs on the board at 5-1.

The JetHawks added two in the eighth off Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer on a two-run double by Jay Garthwaite.

Trailing 7-1 in the ninth, High Desert opened the frame with three straight singles, the third of which was by Charlie Lozada. The 18-year old finished the night with three hits and an RBI, as the Mavs cut the deficit to 7-2. JetHawks reliever Doug Slaten was removed for Pete Sikaras with two outs and the tying run in the on-deck circle. Sikaras recorded his second save in as many nights, and league-best 18th of the year, getting Froilan Villanueva to ground out to third to end the game.

The Mavs and JetHawks meet for the third time in the four-game series on Wednesday night. Chad Petty (0-9) throws for High Desert against Lancaster's Keith Whatley. Game time from the Hangar is at 7:15 (9:15 Central).

David Weiser 's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

Good news on Ben Hendrickson...

STARS WASTE 15, LOSE IN 16

The Stars have seven more home dates in which to crack the 200,000 mark in attendance this year. Without a weekend game and only one more Friday game, it's going to be tough. They must average 1,921 at the gate for the remainder of the season and need the help of one big crowd........ It's bad enough for the front office that the throngs of little leaguers who filled the ballpark in June and July are back in school, and football is once again becoming a preoccupation with the casual fans who once came to fill the time, but the possibility of a rainout dampened the intentions of a lot of Parkway travelers with pockets-full of dollar bills for parking, who might have otherwise stopped by........ The huge rains never came, although the game was delayed 19 minutes as storms skirted the city to the west and the south of the stadium tonight. For most of the evening, a light rain fell, bringing out a few umbrellas, but not heavy enough to stop play until the 6th when Chattanooga halted it to tend to the mound. The rain was only a factor in keeping the crowd down to one of the smallest of the year.

The Lookouts were a hot team coming into today, winning eight of their last ten games, and trying to stay in the mix of a four-team logjam for first place. The Barons also lost and Mobile won, so the Stars still lead Birmingham by a half-game, and Mobile and Chattanooga by just one game after tonight........

In the top of the 1st, Alejandro Diaz led off with a single off the glove of starter Jeff Housman and onto center field. Edwin Encarnacion then drove a ball into right-center field off the Purity sign for a double, but the relay throw from J.J. Hardy somehow nailed Diaz at the plate. It was a very close play at the plate, as Diaz tried to slide around Kade Johnson's tag........ Encarnacion would score, however, on a stolen base and a passed ball....... Jeff Housman threw 24 pitches that inning; however, he settled down and threw ten in each of the next three, while retiring eight straight until the 4th, when Andrew Beattie laid down a bunt single.

The Stars got some smart defense in the 5th inning as Johnson nailed another at the plate...... Former Birmingham Baron Jason Dellaero led off the inning with a single to center and was sacrificed to second. Diaz, next, ripped a 2-2 offering to right field. Noochie Varner fired the ball home to Kade, successfully holding the runner at third. Kade then threw to second, trying in vain to get Diaz, but Alejandro Machado, seeing Dellaero trying to advance, threw back to Johnson for a play at the plate. Kade blocked the plate and made the hard tag on Dellaero for the out.

After the first of three double plays for the Stars in the 6th inning, the Stars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning....... Dave Krynzel led off with a bloop single into no-man's land in left, but he was thrown out trying to steal for the 20th time this season, tying a club record that Luis Polonia has held since 1985........ Josh Hall, 0-2 vs. the Stars this season, walked Hardy. The failed attempt to steal hurt the Stars in the end, for Brad Nelson stepped up and doubled Hardy over to third. Hardy then scored on Brandon Gemoll's grounder. Varner then singled past shortstop Dellaero into left. Steve Smitherman's throw to get Nellie at the plate was by catcher Dane Sardinha, and the Stars took a 2-1 lead. That wouldn't last long........

After a pair of walks by Matt Parker in the 9th, Sardinha delivered a one-out single to center, scoring Steve Smitherman, giving the Lookouts a 3-2 lead. A 6-4-3 double play got the Stars out of the inning.

The Stars tied it up once more and they could have put it away, if not for an on-the-money relay throw from Andy Beattie that cut down leadoff hitter Gemoll at the plate on a follow-up triple into the right field corner by Varner. Varner did eventually score the tying run on a clutch single to left by Johnson....... Kade now has a pair of three-hit games, all within a span of three days, and is on a 7-for-14 tear with four RBIs. He has shortened up his swing lately and tried to make more contact, and it appears to have some success.......

But with Chris Barnwell, who walked, on second, and Johnson on first, Chattanooga manager Phillip Wellman made a pitching change and brought in lefty Bobby Bevel........ Bevel was in the Southern League way back in 1999 with the Carolina Mudcats and two years later, with the Suns. He's a tough pitcher to run on, because he has almost no windup. He steps out with his left foot and just hurls the ball. It's hard to imagine how he gets any velocity with that kind of windup, but his big pitch is really an overhand curve, and that's what he used to retire the Stars in the 9th, getting pinch-hitter Daryl Clark on a 1-2 breaking ball and Machado on a pop-up to short.

Bevel held the Stars hitless, followed by Travis Thompson, who struck out three and gave up just one hit for three innings........ The Stars loaded the bases in the 13th inning, but Johnson popped out to 2nd baseman Andy Beattie on an 0-1 pitch . That was the only real threat the Stars posed until the 16th........

Barnwell led off the bottom of the 16th with a single, and raced aggressively to third on a single to left by Kade, who took second on the throw to third. Mike Kremblas, who would have pitched for the 2nd time this season in the 17th inning had the game continued, singled on the infield to drive in Barney. Machado successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third, but with the chance to win this game, Brian Shackleford struck out Krynzel and after walking Hardy intentionally, got Nelson to ground out to first to end a nearly five-hour game.

The Lookouts, who have climbed from last place in this half to within a game of first, have won 10 of their last 13 and are now 5-1 in extra inning games...... The Stars, who have had season-long success against Chattanooga, are now 14-6 against the Lookouts and 3-9 at the Joe........ 12-game loser John Koronka goes for the Lookouts tomorrow with more threatening weather in store. Dave Nolasco (1-2, 4.50) will try to get the win for the Stars.

I declare J.J. Hardy's slump officially over, although it's lacking some punch......... He is hitting .385 in his last seven games, and 8-for-17 in his last four.

Ben Hendrickson, who was removed for precautionary reasons after throwing just an inning in his last start, will pitch Thursday. There was some worry about his shoulder, but the club report says Ben just had difficulty getting loose that day, and that there is nothing wrong with his arm or his shoulder.

It's worth emphasizing that John Vandenberg has been very warm for quite awhile now raising his average to .310. It's not an empty batting average but it is a bit on the light side. Still we don't always emphasize this enough the Midwest league is a pitchers league so hitting over .300 is pretty good at that level. Some improvement in strike zone adjustment and adding some power (grab some Hardyflakes in the offseason John) could make him a very good offensive prospect.

I've been a bit skeptical of sending Hardy and Krynzel to the Arizona Fall League again I'm not sure how much they would benefit from going there again. Hardy maybe a bit more since he's had fewer minor league ABs and missed a month this year. I think guys like Noochie, Nelson, and Clark could benefit more. With his recent hot streak Kade Johnson might be the best candidate of all. A hot month of August isn't a lot to go on for promoting him to AAA next year, but if he could have a good August and then go to the AFL and perform well things would look much better. Finishing up my AFL thoughts I'm always hesitant to send pitchers due to workload issues, and there aren't any obvious candidates who lost injury time as far as I can tell.

I'd send Hardy, Clark, Krynzel, Nelson, Johnson, and Weeks to the AFL. All position players, but a good mix, and if Weeks can handle the AFL, we can start him off at Huntsville.

Give Clark a lot of work at third base and the outfield.

From the Helena Web Site:

Helena was able to bang out 18 hits dispite being without star catcher Lou Palmisano who is out for the season with a broken ankle and is on his way back to Milwaukee for surgery, and OF Drew Anderson who is out with a wrist injury.

Actually, they said "Drew Barnes", but since 3B Justin Barnes played last night and Anderson didn't, I imagine they mean the outfielder drafted in the 24th round out of the University of Nebraska.

I think their are restrictions on how many position players you can send for the AFL clancy. Thus throwing a bit of a Wrench into that idea. I have no doubt that Weeks will be sent and use the below AA exemption.
