Wednesday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Norfolk (Mets) 3, Indianapolis 2

Tough loss for the Indians tonight. Ben Ford with another quality start but the defense and bullpen let him down.

IndyIndians.com Game Summary:

The visiting Indianapolis Indians' offensive struggles continued on Wednesday evening as the team dropped a 3-2 contest to the Norfolk Tides at Norfolk's Harbor Park. Norfolk outfielder Kenny Kelly's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh capped off a come from behind victory for the Tides, who trailed 2-0 early in the ballgame.

Mike Bacsik picked up the win for Norfolk pitching 7.0 innings to pick up his second win of the season. Bacsik (2-7) allowed single runs in the second and third innings, as the Tribe took an early 2-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Keith Luuloa led off with a double and scored two batters later on Wilton Veras' sacrifice fly. In the third inning Richard Paz hit a two-out double to right-centerfield and was driven home by Jim Rushford, who delivered a two-out RBI single to center to give Indianapolis starting pitcher Ben Ford a 2-0 lead.

That was all the offense the Indians were able to muster, however, as the team was limited to only two hits throughout the remainder of the game. The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in the month of August, as the Tribe has now scored only 32 runs in 13 August contests, an average of only 2.5 runs per game.

Norfolk, meanwhile, came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning when Esix Snead scored from third base on a passed ball charged to Tribe catcher Alex Delgado with two outs in the inning.

The Tides (57-67) evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of Prentice Redman's 11th home run of the season. Redman jumped on a hanging breaking ball from Ford with one out in the inning and drove the ball over the left field wall tying the game at 2-2.

After Bacsik held the Tribe scoreless in the top of the seventh inning, Robert Marquez was brought on to relieve Ford in the bottom of the seventh for Indianapolis. Ford left having allowed only five hits and one earned run in his 6.0 innings, as the righthander turned in a third straight quality start since being moved back into the Indians rotation on August 2nd.

Leading off the bottom of the seventh inning for Norfolk, Kelly cranked Marquez's third pitch of the ballgame deep to left field. Kelly's blast, coming on Marquez's 1-1 offering, was only the second home run of the season for the Norfolk outfielder, but it was enough to give the Tides their first lead of the game at 3-2.

Orber Moreno relieved Bacsik to open the top half of the eighth inning, and retired all six of the Indians batters he faced to record a two-inning save, his first of the season.

The Indians (54-69) will travel to Charlotte on Thursday evening to open a two-game series with the Knights. The Tribe will then return home to Victory Field to open a four-game homestand with these same Norfolk Tides on Saturday evening on Larry Walker Bobblehead night.

Huntsville 5, Chattanooga (Reds) 4

Another big win for the Stars. Ryan Miller with the save despite allowing a homer to Gutierrez in the ninth that got the Lookouts within one. Brad Nelson says "hey all you haters - I can still go yard"... it was his first longball since joining Huntsville.

HuntsvilleStars.com Game Summary:

Two recent additions offered their biggest contributions to date in Huntsville?s 5-4 win over Chattanooga on Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (28-24) retained a one-half game lead over Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half race.

With a worn-out bullpen after Tuesday?s 16-inning, 5-4 loss, Huntsville desperately needed starter Dave Nolasco to deliver the goods. Promoted from High Desert to Huntsville on July 24, Nolasco met the challenge, recording his second straight victory with his longest outing in the Southern League. Nolasco (2-2) navigated seven solid innings, allowing three runs on just three hits and one walk while fanning five, a personal season-high. He threw 97 pitches, 56 for strikes, and retired the final seven batters he faced.

Outfielder Brad Nelson entered the game in a 5-for-31 skid, but his blow in the seventh provided a crucial insurance run. Huntsville led 4-1 until Edwin Encarnacion?s 5th-inning, two-run homer. With the Stars up 4-3 in the seventh, Nelson sent reliever Joel Barreto?s 0-1 pitch deep to left for an opposite-field solo homerun, his first since a July 24 promotion to Huntsville. Nelson also singled and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Stars reliever Ryan Miller notched his third save in as many chances, tossing the final two frames and permitting one run, Jessie Gutierrez?s ninth-inning solo homer, on one hit and no walks with two strikeouts. Lookouts starter John Koronka (7-12) lost his league-high 12th decision and third in four starts against Huntsville. Koronka surrendered four runs, three earned, on seven hits and six walks while fanning three over six innings.

The Stars and Lookouts play game three of the four-game set Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium, with Huntsville righty Ben Hendrickson (5-4, 4.15) facing Chattanooga right-hander Steve Kelley (2-0, 2.31). Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium.

Huntsville Box Score:

Good night to be a corner outfielder... Noochie and Nelson both with a pair of hits. Krynzel with a walk and a triple and another solid start from Nolasco. Ben Hendrickson goes tomorrow for the first time since being removed (in what turned out to be a precautionary measure) in the first inning of his last start.

Wisconsin (Mariners) 8, Beloit 0

Eek. Not pretty for the Snappers... hopefully they got all mistakes out of their system and can put on a good show tomorrow night at Miller Park.

Game Summary, Player of the Game, etc. from SnappersBaseball.com:

www.snappersbaseball.com/...me_id=1176

Beloit Box Score:

Not much good stuff to talk about here. Rickie Weeks with a strong night playing second. Callix Crabbe DHed, Chas Terni played shortstop, and Adam Heether played third... Jeff Eure was the odd man out, at least for this night.

I was at the game tonight and the Snappers website pretty much tells the story. Terrible pitching did in the Snappers early.

Weeks went 1-2 with a walk. He left the game after he hit in the bottom of the sixth. He is not injured, dont worry. He got a solid hit and on the out, he hustled down to first and almost beat it out. He also made some nice plays in the field.

Gwynn made his first, and second, errors of the season in the outfield. The first on a fly ball early in the game and the second one he bobbled and then missed the cutoff allowing a run to score. On offense he got the first hit for the Snappers.

Should be a good game tomorrow at Miller Park. I hope everyone going enjoys!

I made it down for some of the game tonight and the line score probably speaks for itself. Lots of walks, and sloppy infield play and outfield play. First off with the bases loaded and one out in a 0-0 game Prince fielded the ball and threw home for the force out. His throw barely pulled Esparagoza off the plate. Gwynn also dropped a deep fly ball on the run (very catchable) Kind of looked like he dogged it and could have brought the 2nd hand in to secure it.

I was not impressed with Carpenter. Mostly for the fact that he really did not control himself on the mound. He showed the umpire up multiple times in his 3 innings, including a moment where he started walking off the field.

Enough about the Depressing stories. Before the game was great because Prince, Gwynn, and Weeks all walked out to the batting cage and took some BP and also signed some autographs. It looked like Prince and Gwynn are trying to show him the ropes. I was really impressed with Weeks in the cage. QUICK QUICK QUICK hands. I also did not think he was as built as he was. In all the pictures that I saw he looked a lot smaller. He must have been in the weight room because he really did look put together. He was very nice to fans with signing autographs. In one case as he was walking off the field in warmups, a gentleman asked for his autograph and I kid you not, Rickie was 50 ft away from him walking to the dugout, he stopped what he was doing and jogged over and signed the guys ball, and jogged on back. Maybe he is trying to be friendly and fit in at first... Or maybe he is a truly nice citizen! Even with the horrible game I recommend anybody getting a chance to go see Rickie, as he will probably carry on a conversation with you even. I would not be suprised.

Provo (Angels) 5, Helena 4, 10 innings

Another tough one for the Helena club. Provo commits four errors but the Angels pick up the win.

ProvoAngels.com Game Summary:

In extra innings the Provo Angels defeated the Helena Brewers 5-4 at Larry H. Miller Field. With the bases loaded, Bobby Wilson got up to bat and hit a bloop single to center field to bring in the winning run for the Angels. Warner Madrigal went 2-5 with two RBIs and one run.

Helena Box Score:

Good night for Manny Ramirez (as always, it would seem). Manuel Melo with two hits and two steals, Barret Whitney with three hits, and Guilder Rodriguez with two hits and a steal (his 19th).

Not that anyone cares or anything, as it seems MassBrew begs for people to come to this forum, but no one comments on anything posted except by Mass Brew.....but I was at the Beloit game tonight. Prince Fielder is the real deal, Tony Gwynn Jr. is destined to disappoint, Calvin Carpenter had a no hitter going in the third, yet had 2 runs in and the bases loaded what it seemed like constantly. Rickie Weeks looks just plain solid.

Not sure what you mean, as plenty of folks have been chiming in about their experiences at Pohlman Field and elsewhere; the minor league forum has seen as much activity as the major league forum as of late...

Arizona Box Score:

On the plus side, SS Gilberto Acosta runs wild with four SB's in as many attempts (he's now 24-for-25 on the season); Brewer pitchers strike out 17, including RHP Chris Gittings with a perfect ninth, striking out the side...

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 7, High Desert 6, 15 innings

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Mavs Lose Marathon in 15

Lancaster, CA -The High Desert Mavericks and Lancaster JetHawks went 15 innings on Wednesday night, before the JetHawks finally ended the 4:41 minute marathon with a run in the bottom of the 15th, beating the Mavs by a final score of 7-6 at the Hangar in Lancaster.

Position player Johnny Raburn, making his first ever appearance on the hill in a Mavs uniform, hit Marland Williams with the bases loaded to force in the game-winning run. High Desert used a total of seven pitchers on the night.

The game remained scoreless in the extra innings until the 15th. Tommy Marx (0-3) began the inning for the Mavs, but walked the first two hitters he faced. Raburn came into the game and hit Jason Gorman on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Marland Williams, who set a California League record on the night by striking out six times, finished off a dismal night with the game-winning RBI, getting hit by Raburn's 2-2 pitch.

The Mavs blew a 5-0 lead, as Chad Petty missed out on an opportunity to win his first game in a Mavs uniform.

Todd West's groundout scored Jeremy Frost in the second as the Mavs took a 1-0 lead. High Desert added four in the third, as Scott Candelaria had an RBI triple and scored on Frost's two-out double. Froilan Villanueva and Frost both scored on John Toner's two-run single, making it 5-0.

The JetHawks got to Petty in the third, as Kyle Nichols hit his League-leading 26th homer of the year, making it 5-2. Mike DiRosa added his fifth of the year, three batters later, making it 5-3.

Tony Stavros came on in the sixth after Petty allowed the first two men to reach. Stavros worked out of the jam and went on to work a total of three innings while allowing just one unearned run.

Leading 5-4 in the ninth, the Mavs added an important insurance run, as Toner, who earlier committed a double-error that led to an unearned run for the JetHawks, collected his third hit of the night. After Toner doubled, Charlie Lozada singled him in, making it 6-4.

The JetHawks scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Mike Thiessen doubled to drive home Jason Gorman, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, making the score 6-5. Mavs reliever Bobby Bystrowski was then lifted in favor of left-hander Justin Gordon. Thiessen stole third and then scored the tying run as catcher Jeremy Frost's throw to third sailed into left field.

JetHawks reliever Josh Kranawetter (2-1), who was only the third Lancaster pitcher used on the night, got the win with three scoreless innings of relief.

In the defensive play of the game, Ralph Santana made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the tenth, keeping the game tied at 6-6. Gordon allowed a two-out double by Mike DiRosa. Edgar Varela hit a ball towards the right field corner. Santana raced towards the foul stripe and made a diving catch to temporarily save the game for the Mavs.

Chris Saenz (8-8) throws on Thursday night in Lancaster, against the JetHawks' Justin Wechsler (8-9). Game time from the Hangar is at 7:15 (9:15 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Nice relief eforts by Stavros, Danny Stout, and Gordon; but let me get this straight -- after Tommy marx walks his only two men in the 15th, Tim Blackwell has so little faith in him to get out of the inning that he brings in position player Johnny Raburn? Yikes...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

NOLASCO AND NELSON

We're still waiting Milwaukee.

The Stars have been lucky to get good pitching from the rotation and a relief pitcher or two who's available every night, but how long will it be before Frank Kremblas finds the jar empty......... After Tuesday night's 16-inning, nearly five-hour marathon, the pen was down to one man -- Ryan Miller, who despite giving up a home run to Jesse Gutierrez tonight, kept Chattanooga off the bases for his first save since April 27........ But suppose Nolasco had been bombed early tonight, or Miller found himself with the bases loaded and nobody out......... Miller has a 4.23 ERA since starting the season with a 0.55 mark in April. Protecting a one-run lead and no one to go to but a position player doesn't cut it. It's an unnecessary situation........

By the way, it happened tonight at Adelanto, California when the Mavericks lost 7-6 in 15 innings, as infielder Johnny Raburn came in for an ineffective (as usual) Tommy Marx, and with the bases loaded, hit a Lancaster batter who had struck out six times that night........ The Stars, by the way, was the only minor league team in the Brewers organization to win Wednesday night.

Anyway, the Stars roster still sits at 23, several days after rosters were allowed to expand...... And that's counting Mike Jones, who's probably shut down for the season, although he hasn't officially been placed on the disabled list, and Ben Diggins, who's out not just this year, but next as well........ Where's that body, Milwaukee?.

Nevertheless, the Stars retained a ½ game lead over the Barons who destroyed Mobile starter Chris Rojas tonight. See the Standings link for all the scores........

www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html

Nolasco threw 96 pitches, 60 for strikes (62.5%)........ And we wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Outfielder Brad Nelson, in a 5-for-31 skid, homered into the wind blowing out to left in the 7th inning, high over the Corr Wireless sign, giving the Stars not only an important insurance run, but the margin of victory in this game......... It was his 1st home run as a Star, hopefully of many as I expect to see Nellie in the lineup next season....... But the Stars can also send their thank you cards to 3rd baseman Edwin Encarnacion and Chattanooga pitcher John Koronka for a 3-error, 8-batter 2nd inning.

Leading off the inning, Noochie Varner chopped a ball up the middle that found a hole between Koronka's outstretched left arm and torso as he finished his delivery. 2nd baseman Andrew Beattie ranged over, almost behind 2nd base to field the ball near the bag, spun and threw ----- into the Chattanooga dugout. It was a tough play, so Noochie was given a hit and an error on the advance....... Nelson followed and he hit a slow bouncer up Beattie's way. Beattie picked the ball up, but had no play and runners were on the corners........ On a 1-1 pitch to Mike Kremblas, Koronka attempted to pickoff Nelson, and it for a moment appeared that he had him in a rundown, but a balk was called, Varner scored, and Nelson, who was headed to second, got the base, anyway........ On the 3-and-2 pitch, Kremblas hit a ball sharply to Encarnacion, but he threw the ball away, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd........ David Nolasco, next, shot a ball past Gutierrez, who was playing in. The ball rolled into right field for an RBI single, putting runners on the corners again........ Chris Barnwell up. He hits a comebacker to the mound. Koronka chases Kremblas back to third and throws to Encarnacion, but throwing home, hits Kremblas in the back for the 3rd error of the inning. Kremblas scores, giving the Stars a 4-1 lead.

After that, Koronka settled down and retired 8 of the next 9 Stars at the plate until the 4th when Dave Krynzel tripled a 1-1 pitch into the right field corner and J.J. Hardy walked on five pitches....... Krynzel thus becomes only the 3rd player in Stars history to hit 10 triples in a season. (Luis Polonia hit a remarkable 18 in 1985 and Demond Smith hit 14 in 1996)........ Catcher Jason Hill gave Corey Hart a second life when he dropped a foul ball behind the plate, but after fouling off another pitch, Corey, recovered from the effects of some bad buffet in Jackson, flied out to right to end the inning.

The Stars would threaten all night, leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 5th and once more in the 6th. The Stars wasted all ten of their runners in the first six innings, but Nolasco was taking care of business....... After Encarnacion, a .205 hitter vs. Huntsville, made amends with a 2-out, 2-run HR to left in the 5th, Nolasco retired the next seven hitters on 26 pitches, striking out three. All but two hitters received first pitch strikes........ Miller took over and retired four straight until Gutierrez hit his first pitch for a home run to left, but Andrew Beattie grounded out to Brandon Gemoll and Jason Hill flied to center to end the game.

For Nolasco, it was his 2nd straight quality start, giving up a combined four runs on six hits in 13 innings....... John Koronka lost his league-leading 13th game, and his 7th in his last 8....... Against the Stars, Koronka is now 1-3 with a 7.41 ERA in four starts this season........ Frank Kremblas loaded his lineup with three left-handers tonight and it paid off as lefties have hit .366 against Koronka this season. Gemoll, Krynzel, and Nelson went a combined 4-for-9 off him, with a pair of RBIs........

Thursday night should be interesting. Ben Hendrickson (5-4, 4.15) will take the mound against Steve Kelly (2-1, 2.31), who was activated off the disabled list a week ago....... J.J. Hardy picked up his 100th hit of the season, tonight, in the 6th inning. J.J. is 9-for-20 in his last five games (.450) and hitting .364 in his last 9 games....... Corey Hart committed his 5th error this month, dropping a sharply hit grounder in the 4th that did no damage, but at the plate, he's in a 2-for-18 slide. His average dropped below .300 for the first time since July 24....... Noochie Varner is 8-for-22 (.364) in his last five games, and .298 for August.

The front office had a little help from the local Boys and Girls Club tonight, so 990 showed up this time, an improvement of almost 200 from last night's throng........ The Stars now must average almost 2,100 to escape the ignominy of attracting less than 200K for only the 2nd time in their history. Last year, the Stars drew 206,068......... Still the front office is saying they're 15% up over last year. Just what they mean, I don't know....... Before the game, many of the Stars signed autographs for the Boys and Girls Club under the tent on the right field side.

This has nothing to do with the Stars or the Brewers, but you don't often see this....... In a Wednesday Gulf Coast Rookie League game, the Phillies trounced the Tigers at Lakeland, 29-5!...... The Phils scored 10 unearned runs on 7 Tiger errors.
