Thursday 's Daily Menu :

Interesting group of starters today....

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Huntsville 3, Chattanooga (Reds) 1

Stars win despite getting only four hits; Ben Hendrickson sets aside any health fears with six shutout innings; Matt Parker pitched out of big trouble in the eighth; Ryan Miller was asked to get the final out and save the game after two more Parker baserunners reached in the ninth -- after an infield single loaded the bases, Miller got a strike out to close it out. Exciting audio ending....

Stars win despite getting only four hits; Ben Hendrickson sets aside any health fears with six shutout innings

Ben hasn't been getting the lovin' this year that Manny and Luis have gotten, but I think it's pretty clear from the way he has pitched when healthy that he's a darn fine prospect and I can't wait till he's completely over these injuries and smokin' again.

High Desert's audio feed is unavailable (as of "post time", anyway), so there's no Brewer-related action to set your speakers to for the rest of the night.

While waiting for box scores from Provo, Utah and Lancaster, California might make for an enjoyable action-packed evening, I'll take the hint and call it a night while all the Snapper fans drag themselves home from Miller Park.

We'll fill in any blanks in the Link Report early Friday AM....

Did I just read something POSITIVE from David?!?!?!?

Awesome time at the Snapper game tonight. Weeks showed that he has a cannon, he just might need to aim it slightly better (one throwing error tonight.) He also got hit in the head with a pitch to load the bases in the 8th.

Gwynn continues to look good in the field.

14,000 for minor league baseball? Who says Mil. isn't a baseball town?

I'd have a lot more positive to say if the bozos in the front office could manage to put some talent on the Brewers major league team. And once they put the talent there, if they could find a manager with a clue how to play the talent instead of 36yo has beens.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

ENCOURAGING RETURN

A pitch limit was set on Ben Hendrickson at around 50 pitches, not knowing if his forearm would flare up or not. Hendrickson, who is expected now to anchor the playoff rotation, left his last start after one inning, because of some slight discomfort in his shoulder and difficulty in warming up. Stan Kyles, wisely at that time, removed him, seeing his velocity was affected....... Under the eye of pitching coach Kyles, Ben passed that in the 5th inning, and after 60 pitches, when he walked Wilmy Caceres, Kyles came out to see how his pitcher was doing........ Apparently there was nothing to worry Stan about, so with a scoreless duel with Steve Kelly going on, Kyles left him in.......

After that visit, Hendrickson retired the next four hitters, and was removed for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 6th, after throwing 75 pitches, 47 for strikes (62.7%)....... Most encouraging.

Hendrickson, this time, looked sharp, allowing only five hits and a walk in six scoreless innings. He went full on only three hitters and was efficient, thowing just five pitches in the 2nd inning, eight in the 4th, and eleven in the 6th........ Along the way, he would get some smart defense, and one eye-popping, jaw dropping catch by David Krynzel in the 2nd inning....... After Steve Smitherman singled to lead off the 2nd inning for Chattanooga, Jesse Gutierrez lined Hendrickson's first pitch toward left-center field. Krynzel made a full-extension dive to his right, snaring the ball off the top of the grass with a backhand catch, the type you always see Jim Edmonds or Tim Salmon make on ESPN. If that wasn't enough, he got up and doubled off the runner...... There's no doubt at all about Krynzel's defense. He is simply the best in the league, even while in the middle of a horrid slump.......

Krynzel is 25-for-130 since July for a .192 average, and is hitting .130 in August. He has also struck out 21 times in 54 at-bats this month (38.9%) and 14 times in his last 31 at-bats (45.1%). He struck out in the 1st tonight, even though he was ahead 3-and-0 on Lookouts starter Steve Kelly........ In the 4th he made amends somewhat, battling Kelly for a walk after fouling off four pitches. He reached 2nd on a wild pitch, but got a poor jump trying to steal third, and was thrown out to establish a new club record --- 21 times caught stealing in a single season.

Krynzel did reach base, on another error-plagued inning for the Lookouts in the 6th....... The 6th started with a pinch-double by Chris Barnwell ending Ben Hendrickson's night....... Barnwell is now 4-for-9 as a pinch-hitter this year for the Stars. This was his first pinch-double...... Alejandro Machado then dropped a bunt down the third base line. Edwin Encarnacion fielded the ball, but his throw sailed into the baseline and Machado knocked the ball out of the glove of Jesse Gutierrez. Encarnacion was charged with an error and Machado with a sacrifice. Barnwell broke the scoreless duel when the ball bounced away from Gutierrez........

Up to this point, Steve Kelly was tough, allowing only a single to left-center by J.J. Hardy in the 1st. After that, he retired 12 of the next 14 batters. In the end, errors just as they did Wednesday, just ate Kelly up......... Krynzel then ripped a wicked two-hopper at Andy Beattie, skidding under his glove for another error, sending Machado from first to third....... Next, Hardy hit an 0-2 roller to third base. This time, Encarnacion made a fine play picking up the ball on the run and throwing home, forcing Machado at the plate....... With runners on first and second, Corey Hart broke out of a 2-for-19 slump to deliver a double down the left field line into the corner. Krynzel and Hardy virtually walked in, giving the Stars a 3-0 lead.

The Stars threatened for a final time in the 7th inning after Noochie Varner hit a leadoff double all the way to the wall in left field. Brad Nelson's deep fly to the black hole in center field moved Varner to third, but he was stranded there as relief pitcher Casey Dehart struck out Kade Johnson (who struck out three times) and Matt Parker to end the inning.

The combination of Parker and Ryan Miller closed the deal for Hendrickson's 6th win, his first since July 28, but the 8th and 9th were shaky....... Caceres easily beat out a perfect bunt down the first base side and Encarnacion singled to left off Parker. Guye Senjem's bunt to the third base side of the mound moved the runners into scoring position with one out........ All-star left fielder Steve Smitherman is a .310 hitter vs. Huntsville. Next to Guye Senjem (4 HRs, 14 RBI), he's the Lookouts most destructive force against the Stars pitching staff, but he's been a frequent strikeout victim as well. Smitherman went 2-and-2 and fouled off three pitches, before Parker reached back to his breaking ball and got the big clutch strikeout. Jesse Gutierrez lined a 1-2 pitch to Nelson in left to end the inning, but the 9th was even more interesting.

In the 9th, Andy Beattie, another Southern League All-Star, a little guy with a lot of wallop, pulled a 1-1 Parker pitch over all three billboard sections in right field....... Parker might have gotten out of the inning uneventfully after striking out Dane Sardinha and pinch-hitter Jason Hill, but Jeff Bannon, playing in his first game for the Lookouts, walked, after Parker came back from a 3-0 count.......

The Lookouts have made 110 transactions this season compared to the Stars' 39. Can't imagine what that does to a team's chemistry. Camaraderie is one of those intangible factors that is very important to a winning ballclub. The club that stays together, plays together, and learns how to win together. The 1994 team that won when the Southern League Championship consisted of only 35 players, the 3rd lowest total in Stars history. The 1985 team also used only 35 players. The 2003 Stars have used 39 players to date, the lowest total since 1996, when the Stars used a record low of 33 players, and that includes some who were on the team oh, so briefly like Doug Davis, Tim Crabtree, Jeff Robinson, and Brian Moon.

After Caceres singled to center, putting runners on first and second, Parker was yanked, and Miller, who picked up his first save since April Wednesday night, was called in on another save situation....... Edwin Encarnacion dribbled Miller's 1-0 pitch to the third base side to load the bases, Hart not attempting to throw........ Miller got behind 2-and-0 on Guye Senjem, then fought back at 2-2. The game then ended on a very unusual play. Guye Senjem, a .200 hitter vs. the Stars, but with 4 HRs and 14 RBI, tried to check his swing on a pitch that looked like a slider. Very low. Senjem went too far for strike three, but the ball clipped his foot and caromed to Miller, who ran in from the mound, picked up the ball, and flipped it to catcher Kade Johnson, for a 1-2 forceout to end the game.

The Huntsville Stars Booster Club will apparently go on for another year. Thursday night's turnout was very good, much better than expected, and the response was inspiring to its leadership....... Once with a membership of over 300, the Huntsville Stars Booster Club, once winning praise by outside observers as the best in the league, was in danger of dying of apathy....... Down to 130-140 members, most meetings had to dismiss for lack of a quorum........ The Rocky and Eagle awards will be handed out tomorrow at a banquet meeting under the tent after the game and hopefully we'll have good participation from the players. The Rocky award, named after former utilityman Rocky Coyle (Stars '85-'86) is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the hustle, team spirit, and love for the game that has contributed to the team's success. Last year's winner was Jared Mathis, and previous winners have included David Gibralter, Eric Fox, Miguel Tejada, and Toby Kominek........ The Eagle is a role model award that is given for sportsmanship, civic interest, inspiration, and team spirit as well. It's named after former pitcher Bob Bennett, whose Lakota Indian name was One Eagle. Bennett spent many off hours at schools promoting and educating kids on his American Indian heritage....... Put them together, and they're more popularity contests than acheivement awards, but they're awards of appreciation....... I know the winners cause I'm presenting the awards tomorrow, so you'll have to wait. You can go to Johnny Phillips' web site for more information by clicking on the link below and then clicking on the Booster Club website....... These awards are usually Sunday affairs, but there was not one cotton picking weekend home game on the schedule in August this year........ Gotta go. Time to get dressed for work.

Great job as always, David -- and yes, by all means, get dressed!

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Lancaster, CA -The Lancaster JetHawks completed a four-game sweep of the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday night, winning by a final of 4-3 at the Hangar in Lancaster.

JetHawks starter Justin Wechsler (9-9) kept the Mavs off balance all night long. The right-hander allowed his only run of the night, a solo home run to Ralph Santana in the sixth to break up the shutout. Otherwise, the Mavs offense was ineffective, collecting just four hits in seven innings against Wechsler.

Mavs starter Chris Saenz (8-9) was roughed up for three runs in the first frame, but settled down to allow just one more over his next five innings. Saenz struck out six in six innings and did not issue a walk. Only three of the four runs allowed by Saenz were earned.

Marland Williams singled and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch to give the JetHawks a 1-0 first-inning lead. Dan Uggla's RBI triple to right made it 2-0. Uggla would score on an RBI single from Edgar Varela to make it 3-0 in the first.

The only other run Saenz would allow, came in the fourth, as Danny Richar singled and scored on a triple by Dan Firlit.

Santana's second homer of the year put the Mavs on the board in the sixth at 4-1. High Desert added two in the eighth, as Chris Morris doubled and scored on Jeremy Frost's RBI single, making it 4-2. With Santana at third and Frost at first, the Mavs executed the double steal to make it 4-3. However, with Frost at third, Froilan Villanueva grounded out to end the inning.

Pete Sikaras recorded his third save in the four-game series, and league-leading 19th, by working the final 1.1 innings.

Aaron Dean worked two scoreless innings of relief for the Mavs.

The Mavs have now lost four in a row, but return home to Mavericks Stadium on Friday night to open up a three-game homestand against the Bakersfield Blaze.

Derrin Ebert (2-0) throws for High Desert. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Mavericks Stadium.

Helena Game Story from the Provo Herald:

"It's a deadly combination, they're the top hitting team in the league, so they're going to get on base. You can't walk 'em and you can't make errors, and we made four of them tonight. We haven't seen that type of speed this year."

Helena Box Score:

This team is truly an offensive force to be reckoned with; you know I'll give a shout out when a Northeast-based prospect does well, as RHP Dan McKenna did last night...

Arizona Box Score:

For the most part, the Arizona pitchers have thrown strikes all season long; limiting walks now should go a long way toward success down the road, even if the hits/runs against have been higher than desired...

Manny Ramirez hit a huge ninth-inning HR for the Red Sox Thursday, but it's Helena's version that gets the national spotlight from SportsTicker:

EMERGING PROSPECTS

HELENA (PIO) 1B MANUEL RAMIREZ drove in five runs to lead the Brewers past the Provo Angels, 9-5. Ramirez, who hit .474 (9-for-19) with eight RBI in the four-game set with Provo, started his night with a run-scoring groundout in the top of the first inning. After walking in his second trip to the plate, he knocked in a run in the fifth to bring Helena within one run at 5-4. The 20-year-old, who posted six RBI in a contest on July 12, then capped a rally in the sixth with another double to plate a pair of go-ahead runs and added an RBI single in the eighth. A native of Venezuela, Ramirez is now batting .446 (37-for-83) on the road compared to .288 (17-for-59) at home. He currently ranks fourth in the Pioneer League with a .380 (54-for-142) batting average and leads all hitters with a .683 slugging percentage.

Fearless prediction: Chris Saenz is the ace of next years Huntsville rotation and catches all kind of surprise and excitement with people thinking he came out of nowhere. His peripheals are better than a number of other guys. Comfortably over 1K/ IP less than 1BB/ 2IP fewer hits than IP (no mean feat becaue I think HD's defense outside of West is suspect). I think he's just been plain victimized by bad luck and a lot of wind aided HRs.

Of course those of us who watched Saenz fight for respect last year in Beloit won't be surprised.

Just want to say that David is right on the money about last night's game. We've seen Krynzel make some outstanding plays but that one was really something. A great diving catch and then a STRONG throw from leftcenter to first for the DP. Hendrickson looked good and hopefully is a-ok now. Another outstanding defensive play, I thought, was one made by Machado. Gemoll went to his right for a ground ball and just barely missed it but Machado was behind him and made a sliding stop and throw to Hendrickson covering.
