Friday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: LHP Luis Martinez and RHP David Manning in a twinbill at Charlotte (White Sox), 4:15 PM -- we'll know how Luis did by very early evening...

The Helena players who will be able to visit former host families and old friends will be Greg Moreira, Judd Richardson, Andri Gomez, Nic Carter and Manuel Melo. The Raptors will likely qualify as a wild-card team for the post-season despite not winning a half-season division crown. LHP Greg Kloosterman takes the mound tonight at 8:00 PM. It won't be former Raptor radio voice Terry Byrom, but you'll be able to listen to this series. Why didn't the Raptor site look this nice when the Brewers were in town?

From the Indy Site:

RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a major league rehabilitation assignment. He is expected to pitch one inning tonight. Durocher made six one-inning appearances on rehab with the Indians in May going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA. After just six games back with Milwaukee (2-0, 11.04), Durocher was placed on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis. Beginning Aug. 10, he made two appearances for Rookie League Arizona retiring all six batters he faced.

Indianapolis Media Notes for Friday:

TONIGHT: The Indians and Charlotte meet in a doubleheader for the final two head-to-head games of the season. The Tribe needs a sweep to finish with a split of the 12-game season series. The Tribe's only other trip to Knights Stadium this season came in April. A four-game sweep by Charlotte was part of a seven-game losing streak by the Indians. The Indians fared better against Charlotte when the teams met last weekend at Victory Field. The Indians were able to win two of three - both in extra innings.

Tonight will be the Tribe's seventh doubleheader of the season. The Indians have won one, split two and lost three DHs. One of the sweeps was at the hands of the Knights on April 19.

Since July 23, 17 of the Tribe's 22 games have come against opponents from the IL's South division. The Indians are 9-8 in these recent match-ups, but are still just 21-23 against South foes for the season.

The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 13 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .239 and have scored 32 runs (2.46 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in eight of the 13 games.

The Indians have played five extra-inning contests in August going 3-2 in those games. Three of the last six games have gone into extra frames with the Tribe winning all three.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Luis Martinez makes his fifth start for the Indians in game one, and will look to extend his 26.1 scoreless innings streak. Martinez has faced IL South teams in each of his four previous starts. His most recent trip to the mound came against Charlotte on August 8. He pitched in and out of trouble as he allowed three hits and four walks in six innings, but got several fine defensive plays behind him to keep his string of scoreless innings alive. Martinez did not get a decision in a 1-0 win. The Indians have scored just four runs in Martinez's last three starts (1.33 rpg), and only 10 runs in his four starts (2.5 rpg). Martinez has been involved in three straight shutout wins, and the opposition has plated only one run in the four games in which he has pitched.

Martinez came up from Double-A Huntsville on July 24. With the Stars, he led the Southern League with 116 strikeouts and was fifth with eight wins and a 2.58 ERA. He started the season with 21 scoreless innings, and was the Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April (3-1, 0.31 ERA).

Righthander David Manning will pitch game two. In his 12th season of professional baseball, Manning made his Major League debut on Aug. 2 at Montreal. He took the loss allowing six earned runs in four innings. Manning also was hit hard in his second big league start on Aug. 9, and was sent back to the Indians where he started the season. Manning began the season in the Tribe bullpen with the final three of his six appearances coming against the Knights. He gave up three runs in 3.1 innings. Manning was moved into the rotation on May 2 and went 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA in his first six starts. His last start for the Indians came on July 28 against Durham. He snapped a personal three-game losing streak by limiting the Bulls to three runs in seven innings.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth with a .317 average and fifth with a .385 on-base percentage. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers having thrown out 57.7% of would-be basestealers.

SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS: LHPs Luis Martinez and Shane Nance are boasting impressive scoreless innings streaks. Martinez, who was promoted from Double-A on July 24, has made four starts and has yet to allow a run in 26.1 innings. He has fanned 28 while walking 10. Nance, who has had two stints in Milwaukee this season, has not allowed a run since May 16. In 23 appearances since May 23, Nance has worked 32.0 scoreless innings. In that period he has allowed just 13 hits and five walks while striking out 24.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Saturday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Roach (5-8, 4.49) vs. LHP Nate Teut (2-5, 4.50)

Sunday vs. Norfolk - RHP Tyler Yates (1-2, 2.93) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (9-7, 4.63)

BA's Daily Dish can't get enough of the Brewers lately...

Signed out of the Dominican Republic at age 16, Brewers lefthander Luis Martinez has emerged from relative obscurity this year to become one of the system?s top arms.

Martinez, 23, brought a 21-42, 5.97 career record into the season as he started out repeating Double-A Huntsville. He went 8-5, 2.58 with 116 strikeouts in 115 innings to earn a promotion to Indianapolis, where he put up 26 1/3 straight scoreless innings while fanning 28. At 6-foot-6, Martinez isn?t a fireballer, sitting in the 89-90 mph range while working his curveball in and out and using his outstanding changeup up and down in the zone. Brewers officials say he has matured and learned how to pitch, and was helped by the prospect-laden environment at Hunstville.

?He obviously got off to a great start,? Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said. ?He was the pitcher of the month for our organization and was considered for a major league callup. We didn?t bring him to Milwaukee, but we figured if he was a candidate for that, we could try him at Triple-A and see how he did. He?s been great.?

Now that is a pretty sight ... THREE first place teams. And what is impressive is Huntsville - it's difficult to "defend" a first half title, especially with the flux of core players (Martinez to AAA, Jones and Hendrickson on DL).

Granted all this at the expense of High Desert, but it's been a while since we had a first place team or two, and if you count first/second half titles separately, then we have the potential of 5 pennants (Huntsville 1st/2nd, Beloit 2nd, Helena 1st/2nd).

Maybe because the timing allows you to catch the game from the start so often, I'm doing the "give High Desert some love" thing tonight.

It really is amazing how the Mavericks have become a victim of the "we must keep Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena together mentality". I just keep reminding myself that no major league team has a successful affiliate at each level. Derrin Ebert on the mound should make for a competitve contest tonight.

Has any team ever been put together with more former catchers? Jason Belcher, Froilan Villanueva, and Jeremy Frost's days behind the plate are a thing of the past. 18-year-old Charlie Lozada can catch, but also played third base in Arizona. Jeff Eure and Manny Ramirez will likely be added to the High Desert mix next year. So the catcher prospects who can hit can't catch, and vice versa.

In other words, get that ankle well, Cap'n Lou.

Almost thirty-five hundred in Beloit? Normally, that would be a huge crowd. After last night, however... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Adam Heether gets the start and knocks in three with a pair of doubles. Travis Hinton and Prince each go deep. Lots of good offensive performances... but the pitchers let them down on this night.

Helena 4, Ogden (Dodgers) 2

Another nice win from the Captain-less Helena Crew. The opposing team again has a nice writeup that scoops Ticker:

Ramirez, Rottino, and Rodriguez continue to rake. All around good game for the guys in Helena.

Charlotte (White Sox) 5, Indianapolis 1 - Game Two

Believe it or not, the Indians and Knights actually played game two of their scheduled doubleheader. I know its late in the season, but isn't this a little absurd?

Looks like Manning's rough outings with Milwaukee carried over into his first start back at Triple-A. Think there were really 0,000 fans there? Considering the game didn't get started until after 1:00 AM Charlotte-time, that could very well be true.

There's going to be some awful tired ballplayers tomorrow, that's for sure.

Friday's action in brief:

W - Arizona Brewers 7, Arizona Cubs 1

L - Charlotte (White Sox) 4, Indianapolis 3 - Game One

W - Huntsville 10, Chattanooga (Reds) 5

L - Wisconsin (Mariners) 11, Beloit 9

W - Helena 4, Ogden (Dodgers) 2

L - Charlotte (White Sox) 5, Indianapolis 1 - Game Two

L - Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 11, High Desert 4

Overall: 3-4

Interestingly enough, all three wins came against National League affiliates (the Cubs, Reds, and Dodgers respectively) while all four losses came against American League affiliates (the White Sox, Mariners, and Devil Rays). Yes, that useless bit of trivia was brought to you by insomnia.

Combined, the Brewers scored 38 runs but their opponents tallied 39.

That's all from me... Jim will surely fill in all the missing pieces and fix up the Report come Saturday AM.

G'night,

~Bill

Indianapolis Site Game One Summary:

Three (3!) more outfield assists for Jason Conti!

FORT MILL, S.C. -- Ross Gload singled home Aaron Miles with an unearned run in the bottom of the 18th inning Friday night as the host Charlotte Knights defeated the Indianapolis Indians 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. The game, which ended at 12:37 EDT, was played in six hours 20 minutes and was just 17 minutes shy of becoming the longest game in Indians history. The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin after 1:00 a.m. EDT.

Miles led off the 18th with a ground ball to first base that Jim Rushford misplayed. After going to second on a sacrifice by Tim Hummel, Miles came around with the winning run when Gload lined a single into right-center.

The tough-luck loser was Derek Lee (1-3), the Tribe's sixth pitcher of the night. Lee worked 5 1/3 innings scattering four hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Jake Meyer (1-2), the Knights' seventh hurler of the contest, earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief.

For most of the night, the game was one that neither team seemed to want to win. After Charlotte tied the game at 3 in the fifth, both teams had numerous chances to claim the victory. The Indians left the bases loaded in the sixth, and had at least one runner on base in 11 of the final 12 innings. The Tribe hit into three double plays and had three runners caught stealing as they came up empty handed.

The Knights put six runners into scoring position from the sixth inning on, but could not get the timely hit needed to end the game. The best opportunity came in the eighth when Ryan Hankins reached second on back-to-back errors by second baseman Rich Paz. With two outs, Scott Morgan singled to center field where Jason Conti scooped up the ball and fired a strike to Cody McKay at the plate to gun down Hankins and end the inning. The assist was Conti's third of the game, increasing his league-leading total to 19.

Charlotte took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when the first five batters reached base safely. The runs snapped the scoreless innings streak of Tribe starter Luis Martinez at 28.1. Miles and Gload dropped down bunt singles on either side of a walk to Hummel to load the bases. Consecutive singles by Joe Borchard and Jamie Burke drove in two runs. The inning ended when Conti gunned down Gload at the plate for his first assist of the game.

The Tribe stormed back in the fourth inning with three runs to take the lead. Conti led off with a single and scored on Rushford's ninth double of the season. Keith Luuloa followed with an RBI double to tie the game, and then scored when Pete Zoccolillo lined a single to right.

Burke singled home Hummel in the fifth to tie the game. Conti came up big in the field again throwing out Borchard at third base as Hummel crossed the plate.

Jayson Durocher, who joined the Indians Friday on a rehabilitation assignment from Milwaukee, pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Durocher is expected to rehab with the Indians through the end of the minor league season.

While Martinez saw his scoreless streak snapped in his fifth Triple-A start, reliever Shane Nance turned in two shutout innings to extend his scoreless innings streak to 34.0.

Jon Aceves highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a two-run double for Charlotte, which has won its last four home games. Aaron Miles, who had three hits and scored twice in the Knights' 18th-inning triumph in the first game, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Jason Conti opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning for Indianapolis, which fell to 5-10 in doubleheaders this season. David Manning (6-8) gave up all five runs, four hits and four walks in four innings for the loss.

So the Indianapolis crew loses two, then has to drag themselves onto a plane for a flight home to Indy, where they'll play tonight.

Charlotte is only four games out in their division, so I imagine the teams had to get in the game during this last scheduled meeting between the teams. But what about league rules concerning starting times? Local city ordinances? Apparently nothing stood in the way of this doubleheader's completion. Umpires, broadcasters, grounds crew, you name it -- indeed a marathon for all.

Pedro Liriano (9-12) allowed five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in six innings for the win. Jeff Hundley yielded two hits and struck out three over three scoreless innings for his second save.

Steve Smitherman connected on a two-run homer and scored twice for Chattanooga, which dropped to 6-17 vs. the Stars this season. Ty Howington (0-2) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and three hits with six walks in 2 1/3 innings for the loss.
