Link Report for Games of Saturday, August 16th

MassBrew

Saturday's Daily Menu :

The parent Brewers will be long done for the day by the time you decide on making your audio choice. Will Brewerfan's "Batman" pull another Link Report all-nighter?

*

Time to make do with less in the kitchen and still cook a decent meal -- at least that's what Huntsville, and to a lesser extent, Indianapolis, are being asked to do. Indy is playing one man below the roster limit of 24, and Huntsville is playing down two, with only 22 healthy bodies. You can't raid Huntsville to fill Indy. High Desert's full at 25, but certainly there's a Maverick reliever available to help eat any garbage innings at AA. David Krynzel's in dire need of a day or two off, but the High Desert roster is already so devoid of true outfielders, it'd be tough to pull someone such as Chris Morris. So we wait, but don't necessarily look for any activity quite yet...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: A very tired Tribe squad limps home to face Norfolk (Mets) at 7:00 PM; LHP Nate Teut will be asked to go deep in this one...

Cute side note from Friday night:

About 400 Girl Scouts were scheduled to have a sleep-over -- complete with a screening of the movie "Angels in the Outfield" -- on the Knights Stadium field following a doubleheader between the Charlotte Knights and the Indianapolis Indians on Friday night.

As Game 1 wore on into the wee hours of the morning, the event -- if it came off at all -- seemed more likely to become an up-all-night affair.

Earlier in the week, David Weiser wrote this from Huntsville:

The Huntsville Stars Booster Club will apparently go on for another year. Thursday night's turnout was very good, much better than expected, and the response was inspiring to its leadership....... Once with a membership of over 300, the Huntsville Stars Booster Club, once winning praise by outside observers as the best in the league, was in danger of dying of apathy....... Down to 130-140 members, most meetings had to dismiss for lack of a quorum........

The Rocky and Eagle awards will be handed out tomorrow at a banquet meeting under the tent after the game and hopefully we'll have good participation from the players.

The Rocky award, named after former utilityman Rocky Coyle (Stars '85-'86) is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the hustle, team spirit, and love for the game that has contributed to the team's success. Last year's winner was Jared Mathis, and previous winners have included David Gibralter, Eric Fox, Miguel Tejada, and Toby Kominek........

The Eagle is a role model award that is given for sportsmanship, civic interest, inspiration, and team spirit as well. It's named after former pitcher Bob Bennett, whose Lakota Indian name was One Eagle. Bennett spent many off hours at schools promoting and educating kids on his American Indian heritage.......

Put them together, and they're more popularity contests than acheivement awards, but they're awards of appreciation....... I know the winners cause I'm presenting the awards tomorrow, so you'll have to wait....... These awards are usually Sunday affairs, but there was not one cotton picking weekend home game on the schedule in August this year.

Johnny Phillips has updated his own Huntsville site and message board as follows:

The Booster Club treated the STARS to a Big Bob Gibson BBQ supper after last night's win over Chattanooga. The entire field staff and some 20 players, as well as spouses and girlfriends and front office workers took enjoyed the meal. As soon as they finished eating, the team left out for Mobile, the beginning of a 9-day, 8-game road trip.

The annual Rocky and Eagle awards were presented. Chris Barnwell won the Rocky and Matt Parker won the Eagle. Both players received watches from the Booster Club in recognition of winning the awards and their names will be added to the plaque in the STARS front office.

********************************************************************************

Congratulations, guys. Sounds like a good time was had by all, and it's nice to see the Stars' boosters won't be fading away. It looks like there's a good chance they'll be treated to some "star quality" players again next year, pun intended.

And now we know why we didn't get game summaries from Robert Portnoy and David Weiser this morning. Maybe too good a time was had by some http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Indianapolis Media Notes for Saturday:

TONIGHT: The Indians hope to have some legs left as they open a two-game series and five-game homestand with a 7 p.m. contest against Norfolk. The Indians hope to recover from a doubleheader that saw them play 25 innings in eight hours 14 minutes last night. The Tribe and Charlotte started game one at 6:15 last night and didn't end until 3 a.m. this morning. The Tribe was on a 12:35 p.m flight out of Charlotte this afternoon, and landed in Indianapolis shortly after 1:00.

The Indians are a season-low 17 games under .500 for the second time this season. The last time the Tribe was 18 games below .500 was July 20, 1993.

Tonight is Larry Walker Bobblehead Doll Night.

YESTERDAY BY THE NUMBERS: Games: 2 Innings: 25 Time: 6:20 + 1:54 = 8:14 Pitchers: 17 Runs: 13 LOB: 45

Base Hits: 43 Extra-Base Hits: 6 Walks: 20 Strikeouts: 38 Outfield Assists by Jason Conti: 3

Charlotte swept the doubleheader 4-3 and 5-1. Game one went 18 innings before an unearned run proved to be the game winner. The teams left 18 runners on base from the 8th through the 18th innings.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut takes the hill tonight against the Tides. This will be Teut's 11th start and 16th appearance for the Indians. He earned his last win on July 10 against Norfolk despite allowing five runs over seven innings.

THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti recorded three assists in the first game of a doubleheader August 15. That brought his league-leading total to 19. Conti's assist total is the most in the IL since Jay Buhner (Columbus) had 20 in 1987. When the Indians were in the American Association, New Orleans' Kevin Koslofski had 19 assists in 1995. Buffalo's William Pennyfeather had 21 assists in 1993.

SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS: LHP Shane Nance boasts an impressive scoreless innings streak. Nance, who has had two stints in Milwaukee this season, has not allowed a run since May 16. In 24 appearances since May 23, Nance has worked 34.0 scoreless innings. In that period he has allowed just 14 hits and five walks while striking out 26. The streak is the longest in the minors since Dodgers farmhand Orlando Rodriguez worked 35.0 consecutive scoreless innings last season.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Sunday vs. Norfolk - RHP Tyler Yates (1-2, 2.93) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (9-7, 4.63)

Monday vs. Toledo (Game One) - RHP Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.12) vs. RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 2.70)

Monday vs. Toledo (Game Two) - RHP Gary Knotts (4-2, 4.08) vs. TBA

That TBA was Derek Lee initially, who was needed last night -- MB.

In progress: Helena 3, Ogden 3, after 5.5 innings in Ogden

Super flexible Vinnie Rottino making his first appearance at SS in this one...

Enjoying my first wall-to-wall coverage of a Helena game this summer -- the new Ogden announcer is very good, reminds me of Robert Portnoy in Huntsville.

The purpose of this post however, is to temper enthusiasm just a bit for the perennial success of the Brewer entry in the Pioneer League.

It gets a bit confusing, but there are three levels of Rookie League short-season classifications, each one with slightly different age and experience qualifications.

There's something called "Class A - Short Season". This includes the Northwest and NY-Penn Leagues.

Then below that there's "Rookie Advanced". This includes the Pioneer (Helena) and Appalachian Leagues.

Finally, there's just "Rookie". This includes the Arizona and Gulf Coast Leagues.

Each major league organization has two short-season teams split somehow among these six leagues.

In the Pioneer League, the Padres (Idaho Falls), the Rockies (Casper), and the Diamondbacks (Missoula) all have their other short-seaon entries in the more advanced Northwest League. So these teams, traditionally lower in the standings in recent years, and again this year, are really feeding a team to Helena when they play that would be the equivalent of the Brewers' Arizona team. The White Sox split their two teams on the Advanced Rookie Level, so their Great Falls team is somewhat diluted in talent as well.

This explains to some extent why the Brewers always seem to have very successful Pioneer League teams in recent years.

No reason for less celebration, just something to keep in mind as the somewhat older and more experienced Helena team wraps up its season.

End of lesson -- back to the games http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Jason Shelley is amazing. How did every team in baseball manage to ignore this guy? He is dominating Double-A and I think it's reasonable to assert that he's earned himself legitimate "prospect" status. This for a guy who only a few months ago was pitching in the Frontier League.

Kudos, Jason! And kudos to the front office, too... I'm not sure who was responsible for picking him up, but they deserve a lot of credit for recognizing his talent.

~Bill

PS: If anyone has seen him pitch in person, please chime in with your thoughts. I know there's a few Huntsville-ians on the boards... let us know what you think.

Helena 6, Ogden (Dodgers) 3

Thoroughly enjoyable broadcast as the relentless Helena team continues to take no prisoners whatsoever.

Two Wisconsin heroes tonight. Winning pitcher Dan Grybash came on in the 6th and pitched out of a tough one-out, two-on jam with two big strikeouts. Vinnie Rottino lined his first HR of the season in the top of the 7th to break a 3-3 tie as part of a 3-for-5 night.

LHP Dana Eveland improved his K-to-BB ratio to a ridiculous 35-to-4 with his league-leading 11th save. We can not wait to see big Dana in a starting role next year.

Others contributed as well, and the Helena kids have LHP Carlos Ramirez on the mound Sunday as they go for the sweep against the "new team" in Ogden. These guys must be having a blast...

Details by early Sunday AM...

Honestly, I'm just starting to wonder if the park effects throughout the Southern League make us overemphasize the good numbers coming from the AA staff. Yes, they're facing AA hitters, but c'mon already -- every Southern League game ends 3-1, or so it seems.

That's what makes Luis Martinez' AAA debut encouraging. And yes, Shelley's overall performance is much more than smoke-and-mirrors. I do think however, that at some age the word "prospect" has to be outlawed. So while the 26-year-old Shelley isn't a true "prospect", he is "potential help down the road for the big club", a PHDTRFTBG. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- One day after scoring four runs in 25 innings during a doubleheader at Charlotte, the Indianapolis Indians bats exploded for a 9-5 victory over the Norfolk Tides on Saturday night at Victory Field. Jim Rushford led an Indians offensive assault that saw all nine starters record at least one hit, including Tribe starting pitcher Nate Teut who was 2-for-2.

The Indians struck first when Jason Conti's single to left in the bottom of the second inning was followed one batter later by Alex Delgado's two-out, run-scoring double down the rightfield line. Conti circled the diamond, scoring from first on the play, to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead against Norfolk starting pitcher Jason Roach (5-9).

Leading off the bottom of the third inning, Teut jump-started a four-run inning with a single up the middle to lead off the frame. Ryan Knox and Richard Paz then followed suit with singles of their own to load the bases for Rushford, who stepped to the plate with still nobody out in the inning. After working the count to 2-2, Rushford hit a high chopper that landed half way down the third base line, and just inside the foul-line, for an infield single scoring Teut with the Indians second run. Pete Zoccolillo then hit a hard grounder to Norfolk first baseman Jorge Toca allowing Knox to score from third before Keith Luuloa stepped to the plate and ripped a two-run double past a diving Russ Johnson at third base to score Paz and Rushford and give the Tribe a 5-0 advantage.

Norfolk closed the gap to 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Prentice Redman led off the frame with a single and Dan Garcia blasted a two-run homer to left field.

In the very next inning the Tides again turned to the longball as Jorge Velandia ripped a two-run shot off Teut deep over the leftfield fence to bring Norfolk to within a single run at 5-4. With only one out in the inning, Roach ripped a double over the head of Conti in centerfield. Teut then gave up a single to Garcia with two outs in the inning to bring home Roach with the tying run.

Roberto Giron relieved Teut following Garcia's single, and struck out Tsuyoshi Shinjo to get out of the inning with the score knotted at 5-5.

The Tribe offense wasted no time in answering back, as Zoccolillo and Luuloa reached base with one out for Conti in the bottom of the fifth, who put the Indians on top to stay with a two-run double down the right field line to make the score 7-5.

Rushford added the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run blast to right-centerfield off reliever Pat Strange. The blast was Rushford's ninth of the season and also scored Paz who had walked with one out in the inning. Rushford finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBI.

Giron (1-5) pitched 3.1 innings of two-hit relief for the Tribe while striking out five to pick up the victory, his first in 63 appearances at Triple-A over the last two seasons.

The Indians (55-71) and Tides (59-68) will square off on Sunday afternoon in the final meeting of the year between the two clubs. Pasqual Coco (9-7, 4.63) will take the mound for Indianapolis to face Tyler Yates (1-2, 2.93) and Norfolk.

Huntsville Box Score:

Stars with win # 4 in a row; David Krynzel and J.J. Hardy combine to walk four times, so we can easily overlook their hitless evening; isn't it interesting that last season Greg Riddoch saw two same-level first basemen in Corey Hart and Brad Nelson, and decided to place Corey in advanced-A High Desert and Brad in low-A Beloit, and each went on to have a remarkable breakout season. Hart is absolutely on fire again...

Mavs scored four in the eighth to make things somewhat respectable...

Bill (Batman), the ninth inning audio included a lively discussion about your email to Mike Lindskog in which you asked about the origin of the term "Uncle Charlie" (dropping a curveball over for a K, I believe), whereas you preferred the term "Drop the yellow hammer", which everyone near the booth humorously relayed they had never heard of http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
