Sunday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Sarfate is pitching today for the Snappers. Expect him to go pretty far into the game because of how depleted the bullpen is after yesterday's game.

Snappers are looking good. Gwynn and Weeks with singles, Gwynn steals third, and Hinton singles him in.

Gwynn with two sacrafices and Weeks with an RBI triple to put the Snappers up 4 - 0 in the 4th.

Fielder with a solo shot. 5 - 0 Snappers

Snappers win 9 to 4. Missed some of the 7th and 8th watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel.

Norfolk (Mets) 7, Indianapolis 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The visiting Norfolk Tides bounced back to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 7-4 at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon, as Norfolk first baseman Mike Glavine led the charge with a four-hit game. In the final meeting of the season between the two clubs, the win by Norfolk produced a split of both the two-game series, and knotted the season series at six games apiece.

Tribe starter Pasqual Coco was roughed up early, allowing four runs in the top of the first inning as both Jeff Duncan and Glavine cranked two-run homers for the Tides. Glavine finished the game having reached base safely in all five of his plate attempts, going 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.

Indianapolis (55-72) came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first facing Tides starter Tyler Yates. Richard Paz and Jim Rushford reached base with one-out singles, and both runners scored on Pete Zoccolillo's two-run double to right field.

Coco (9-8) surrendered another run in the top of the second inning when Esix Snead tripled to right field and scored on a balk charged to Coco which made the score 5-2. The balk was one of three charged to Coco on the afternoon, as the Tribe pitcher was called for a balk in the first, second, and third innings of the ballgame. Coco left having allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Indians loaded the bases against Yates. Yates then retired Ryan Knox and Paz on a pair of popups to the right side of the Norfolk infield. With two outs and the bases still loaded Rushford lined a 3-2 pitch up the middle scoring a pair to bring the Indians to within 5-4.

Following Rushford's base hit, Jason Anderson was brought in to face Zoccolillo, who grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning. That was as close as the Indians would get, however, as the Tides added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings off Indians reliever Robert Marquez.

In the sixth, Anderson led off the inning with a single to left and came around to score on Prentice Redman's RBI single. Russ Johnson walked leading off the seventh and scored on Dan Garcia's RBI single to make the score 7-4.

Anderson (1-3) pitched 2.1 innings of hit-less relief to earn the victory for Norfolk. Orber Moreno picked his 11th save in a two-inning stint to end the game.

The Indians open a three-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens on Monday evening when the teams play a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. at Victory Field. Ben Ford (3-3, 2.70) and Shane Nance (2-4, 1.49) are scheduled to start for Indianapolis against Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.12) and Gary Knotts (4-2, 4.08) for Toledo.

Indianapolis Box Score:

So Shane Nance's scoreless sreak will be challenged by a spot start, huh?

Streak information prior to Sunday's Beloit game:

Burlington kept Snapper leadoff man Kennard Bibbs off-base last night, snapping his streak of reaching base safely at 37 games in a row, one shy of matching Buck Coats of Lansing for the longest such streak in the Midwest League this year. It was the sixth-longest streak in all the minor leagues. The Bees also held John Vandenberg hitless, ending his league-high 19-game hitting streak. Vandenberg did walk in the sixth and has reached base safely in 34 games, now the longest active streak in the league.

RHP Dennis Sarfate backs up his confident words in the latest Brewerfan.net interview piece (five walks, though)...

Beloit Game Summary from the Burlington Site:

Tony Gwynn perfect in five plate appearances; Callix Crabbe has been seeing time at SS upon Rickie Weeks' return; speaking of Rickie, he has four errors in five games at 2B thus far; nice game for 3B Adam Heether, getting a good opportunity for class-A playing time in his first pro season...

According to the box score on ESPN.com, it appears that Rickie Weeks made 2 errors today. I believe he had one yesterday and one during the Miller Park game. Unless I am wrong, that makes 4 errors already. Not to mention that his footwork looked awkward when turning double plays the other day.

Oh well . .. still plenty of time to practice and learn. That's what the minors is for.

Ogden (Dodgers) 8, Helena 5

A couple of game notes from the Ogden site:

Chad Billingsley struck out the first six Brewers he faced and that spurred the Raptors to their first win of the season over Helena. Billingsley finished with 11 K's in five innings, while improving his record to 4-3. The series now moves to Helena Monday night.

Helena Box Score:

LHP Carlos Ramirez with his first truly rough outing of 2003; CF Terry Trofholz with yet another multi-hit game and four SB's -- considering he'll be 23 in September, he'll be an ideal candidate for CF duties in High Desert next season while Steve Moss returns to Beloit, post-2003 shoulder injury...

Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 11, High Desert 7

It's like the movie Groundhog Day following the Mavericks...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

Adelanto, CA - The Bakersfield Blaze out-slugged the High Desert Mavericks for a third straight night, beating the Mavs by a final score of 11-7 on Sunday evening at Mavericks Stadium.

Adam Bonner connected with a three-run homer to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Brian Martin hit his first of two homers on the night, giving the Blaze a 6-0 lead.

The Mavs actually tied the game at 6-6, rallying for three in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth.

"If Weeks can keep hitting like he has been (small sample size, I know...), I can live with the defensive shortcomings. "

Regardless of sample size, shouldn't we expect the number 2 pick in the draft and the best college baseball player of 2003 to be able to hit?

just can't imagine this club facing Pioneer League competition

In one of my articles, I mentioned this, and this is also why the Brewers are going to be forced to draft heavy in college again next season, to fill some gaps. The guys on offense I can see even close to being ready for Helena right now are Acosta, Lewis, Mannon, Plasencia, McCormack, and maybe Brian Opdyke. There should be some pitcher movement, especially with the success of some high-mid round HS guys like Hawk, Marion, and Wooley, but I'd think you'd want to graduate more than 10 out of 35 guys to the next level the following season.

If Weeks can keep hitting like he has been (small sample size, I know...), I can live with the defensive shortcomings.

Hopefully the error rate won't be quite as prolific as Agustin Septimo's in Helena. The thing with Rickie is, if his bat is so close to the majors as people say it is, his defense is going to have to catch up in a hurry, so if the Brewers don't think he can handle 2B right quick, he might be off to the outfield before you know it.

Don't the Pads' AA team, Mobile, have some absolutely fantastic names?

This 18-year-old Charlie Lozada kid can certainly handle the bat, apparently even in high-A.:

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

THE STARS STUMBLE AGAIN AT FOUR

The Stars can't seem to get over this hump....... They came into tonight's game with a four-game win streak, looking to make it five, but they failed again ---- for the 6th time this season....... They had two excellent opportunites to break this game wide open in the late innings, but failed. They had a proven stopper in Jeff Housman who came into this game with a 3-0 record and a ridiculous 1.14 ERA, but failed. It was just one frustrating night and they have just two weeks left in the season....... I don't know. Maybe they're going to wait until the last week of the season, like they did last year, when they put together a six-game win streak before losing the last game of the season.

Jon Knott and Todd Donovan put the Stars in the hole with a pair of home runs into a dead sky, both similar in that they came on Housman's first pitch and they landed on the hillside beyond the left field wall. Donovan's two-run shot gave the Bay Bears a decisive 4-0 lead in the 5th inning.

The Stars, down 4-0 fought back, after five scoreless innings....... Duncan McAdoo, who had not allowed more than three runs in each of his last three starts, had set down six straight hitters when Dave Krynzel hit a 2-2 pitch into right field for a single in the 6th. Krynzel then stole 2nd, his 40th stolen base of the year (the 6th Huntsville Star in club history to steal 40 in a season)........ J.J. Hardy stepped up and pounded a 3-2 pitch over the head of Todd Donovan and off the left field wall for a double to bring in Krynzel, but Hardy was stranded by Corey Hart on a ground ball to J.J. Furmaniak.

In the 7th, the Stars loaded the bases with one out and for all their effort, only got a run on a bloop single by Noochie Varner over the head of Jake Gautreau, who tried to make a basket catch in shallow right. That scored Brandon Gemoll, who had singled and reached third on a wild pitch........ After Varner's hit, J.J. Furmaniak booted a ground ball by Daryl Clark. That prompted Mobile manager Craig Colbert to bring in R.D. Spiehs (0-1, 3.29, 12 Ks, 3 BBs, 13 2/3 IP) and he closed the door...... Mike Kremblas bunted for a hit with two strikes on him to load the bases, but Brad Nelson struck out on a 3-2 pitch, after fouling off a number of pitches, and Chris Barnwell flied out to Vince Faison in right, who gunned down Varner at the plate to complete the inning-ending double play.

Trailing 5-2 in the 8th, the Stars were once again turned back, stranding runners on 2nd and 3rd....... Krynzel and Hardy both led off with walks against J.J. Trujillo and his frisbee slider. Krynzel then advanced to third on Hart's deep fly out to center........ After Gemoll singled to right, scoring Krynzel to make it 5-3, and pushing Hardy to second, Bryan Gaal was called in from the bullpen......... The Stars have been successful all season in teeing off against him. In 7 games this season, Gaal's ERA vs. Huntsville was 6.43 and Huntsville batters were hitting nearly .400 off him....... It looked like the Stars had the upper hand on him again when Gaal's wild pitch with Varner at bat sent runners to second and third, but Gaal this time got lucky and took control....... Varner struck out on a 2-2 fast ball and got D.J. looking as well with a fast ball on the hands and for all that effort, the Stars came away with just one run again....... Gaal who had allowed 12 hits in seven innings in his previous seven appearances against the Stars, held the Stars hitless and scoreless for 1 2/3 innings.

Monday night, Dave Nolasco (2-2, 4.30) will take on Chris Rojas (5-9, 4.55)....... Rojas is 2-3 with a 3.50 ERA agaginst the Stars in 6 appearances and three previous starts this season in 13 innings....... Justin Germano will make his Mobile debut as the starter in Tuesday's game........ Four other times in Huntsville Stars history, they have failed to string more than four straight victories together --- 1993, 1995, 1996, and 2000. None of those were playoff seasons.......

Dave Krynzel ran his streak to 11 games with a strikeout in his first at-bat. The record, since my records on this can only go back to 1996, is 14 by T.R. Marcinczyk during the 1998 season. Duncan McAdoo fanned him on a high fastball, a pitch that as of late, has been irresistable and vulnerable to Krynzel........

Kade Johnson is day-to-day. He was clipped on the forearm by a pitch in Friday's game vs. Chattanooga, and the area from the elbow to the wrist is swollen. Kade can't fully flex the wrist, so he'll be out for awhile........

Ryan Gripp, who was released by the Stars on August 6, despite hitting .392 in July, has caught on with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the independent Northern League. Saturday, he drove in a run in Winnipeg's 10-4 victory over Gary, but went 0-for-4 in his first game for them.
