Tuesday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

From the Link Report for Monday's Games:

We had linked to an article or two about RHP Nick Bates, who hadn't been seen as of late since one pitching appearance early on. Interesting to see him here as the DH, and it does appear that the 1-for-4 day and .250 thus YTD average belongs to Nick Bates, and not the Brewers' young OF, Dallas Bates.

Fooled again by the box score. The Brewers have let us know that yes, it was Dallas Bates in the lineup for the Maryvale kids.

Unfortunately, we also just learned that Nick Bates, the 23-year-old free agent RHP signed in July out of Michigan State, underwent elbow surgery last week. Hopefully his pro career will extend beyond more than just the one appearance he made for the Arizona team.

Here's a reminder link about Nick Bates' signing:

In progress: High Desert 0, Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 0, after four innings

LHP Chad Petty has faced only one over the minimum through four innings, allowing two hits; I've tried not jinxing Petty this summer, jinxing him, etc. Hopefully a few of you may choose to give Chad and the Mavs some audio attention during your late evening surfing...

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ernie Young?s 18th home run of the year proved to be the difference as the visiting Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Indianapolis Indians 3-1 on Tuesday night at Victory Field.

Andy Van Hekken combined with four Mud Hens relief pitchers to hold the Tribe to a single run, that coming on a one-out double by Doug Jennings in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tribe offense out-hit Toledo by a 10-8 margin, but stranded 12 men on base, including five over the game?s final four innings.

Van Hekken (4-6), scattered nine hits over his 5.2 innings pitched, while having narrowly avoided allowing a game-tying three-run home run to Jennings in the bottom of the sixth. With two runners on, Jennings blasted a Van Hekken offering high and deep off the very top of the right field wall, coming no more than a foot away from tying the game at 3-3. Wilton Veras scored from second base on the play for the Tribe?s only run, but Jennings and Cody McKay were both stranded on base in the inning.

The Indians stranded two runners on base in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings, as four Indians batters recorded two hits in the ballgame.

Derek Lee started for Indianapolis, pitching eight innings allowing only seven hits while striking out five, as the only blemish on his record was the three-run shot off the bat of Young in the fourth.

Fernando Rodney, the fifth Mud Hen pitcher used in the game, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Toledo to record his 23rd save of the season.

The Indians will travel to Columbus for a two-game series with the Clippers on Wednesday and Thursday before heading off to Louisville for a three-game weekend series with the Bats. The Tribe will return home to Victory Field on Monday, August 25th when they open the final homestand of the season with two games against Louisville.

Indianapolis Box Score:

Doug Jennings is really a 1B/DH at this stage of his career, so get used to seeing the Rushford / Knox / Zoccolillo outfield combo often in the coming days -- at least that's three guys we like to root for...

Just a couple of things I found noteworthy in tonight's game.

1. Indy strands more runners at third with less than two outs than any other team I have ever rooted for. Tonight, again, we had second and third one out in a 3-1 ballgame and Scarborough pops up to short and Knox grounds out to SS. This has been one of the many reasons we have such a terrible record. Our concentration level needs improvement.

2. Derek Lee pitched a great ball game, surrendering 3 runs in 8 innings, all coming off a 3 run homer by Young. He doesn't throw real hard, maybe 87 tops, but he is very effective at times.

3. Pete Zoccolillo smoked 3 balls tonight and had nothing to show for it. I think he was 0-4, just having bad luck. He's still one of my favorite players. It's close between him and Rushford who was 1-3 (.333 as usual).

4. Rich Paz is making my favorite's list as well going 2-4 with a double. He is a very solid little player drawing walks and getting on base a lot. I hope the Brewers keep him around for next season. I think he will make a great role player for next years team.

Overall I can't wait for next season and hopefully a better team to root for!

Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 2, High Desert 0

Yet another tough loss for the Mavs. Chad Petty was brilliant but Tony Stavros, usually one of High Desert's most reliable relievers, gave up two runs in the eighth. Dewon Brazelton started for Bakersfield but Petty matched him pitch-for-pitch. Nothing like a number one pick with an MLB contract to get a soft-tossing left-hander on track, huh?

Wishful thinking, perhaps :) .

HDMavs.com Game Summary:

The High Desert Mavericks hit the road on Tuesday for the final road trip of the 2003 season. The Mavs dropped game one of the six-game Northern swing, as the Bakersfield Blaze beat the High Desert Mavericks for the fourth straight game, shutting out the Mavs by a final score of 2-0 on Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield scored two runs in their final at-bat, giving the Blaze a 4-0 record over the Mavs, and a five-game winning streak overall.

Both starting pitchers had their best outings of the season respectively. Mavs lefty Chad Petty, who was looking for his first win in a Mavs uniform, pitched seven shutout innings and left with the game scoreless. Petty struck out nine and walked three, while allowing just three hits in his seven innings.

On the other side of the coin, Blaze starter Dewon Brazelton, who started the year in the Major Leagues with Tampa Bay, held the Mavs in check, allowing just five hits in seven shutout innings.

The game was decided by the bullpens, as Tony Stavros (2-3) allowed two runs in just .2 innings of relief. After striking out Heath Kelly to open the eighth, Stavros walked Brian Martin. Luis DePaula knocked in the game-winning run as the Blaze took a 1-0 lead. DePaula would then score on a two-out double by Eric Reece, giving the Blaze a 2-0 advantage.

Chris Crawford, who came on in the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 inning, got out of a jam in the ninth. Johnny Raburn?s groundball to short was thrown in the Bakersfield dugout, allowing Raburn to reach second base to open the ninth. Crawford (6-6) would then get John Toner, Jeremy Frost and Ozzie Chavez on consecutive groundouts to end the game and secure the win.

The Mavs only scoring chance came in the first inning, as Froilan Villanueva and Scott Candelaria had back-to-back hits with two outs. Brazelton got out of the jam, as Johnny Raburn lined out to the second baseman. The Mavs had only six base runners the rest of the game.

Ralph Santana had a season-best 11-game hitting streak come to an end, going 0-4 on the night. John Toner went 1-2 and was on base three different times with two walks.

The shutout marks the third time this year that the Mavs have been blanked.

High Desert has now lost eight in a row and drops to 13-45 in the second half and 38-90 overall. The Mavs look to avoid tying their longest losing streak of the year on Wednesday night, as Chris Saenz (8-9) takes on Bakersfield?s Chris Seddon. Game time in Bakersfield is at 7:15 PM (9:15 Central).

On Tuesday afternoon, it was announced that Mavs left-hander Derrin Ebert was promoted to the AAA Indianapolis Indians. Ebert, who was a AAA All-Star with the Indians last season, was 2-1 in three appearances with the Mavs. The Hesperia native will start for the Indians on Wednesday night as the Indians visit the Columbus Clippers.

Ogden (Dodgers) 10, Helena 7

What a crazy game! The Helena staff surrenders 20 (!) hits but the Rookie Brewers still almost pull it out. Not what you would call a "pitchers' duel", was it?

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

Barrett Whitney "Action Shot"...

www.helenair.com/articles...003_01.txt

HelenaBrewers.net Game Summary:

Helena pitchers gave up 20 hits, their season high as Ogden beat the Brewers 10-7 Tuesday night at a smokey Kindrick Field in Helena. Ogden scored six runs on seven hits in the second inning and never looked back. Helena did attempt to rally scoring five runs in the fourth, but it was not enough. Augustin Septimo stole home on the back end of a double steal in the fourth, Helena is now 7 for 7 on double steals of home for the season. (That's an interesting stat -- Batman)

Barret Whitney went three-for-five with two doubles and an RBI for the Brewers. Robby Deevers added two hits and two RBI of his own. Drew Anderson also had two hits.

Kenny Durost pitched one and one third inning allowing six earned runs on seven hits. With the loss Durost drops to 2-4 on the season. Greg Moriera pitched the final two innings getting out of a bases load jam in the ninth to not allow any runs.

Looks like 2002 4th rounder Nic Carter is officially a RHP now...

Wow... where to begin:

1> Khalid Ballouli allowed only 1 earned run in 4 and a third innings. That's good, right? Well, maybe not: he also allowed 4 unearned runs. The Snappers committed two errors, one by Callix Crabbe and the other by Ballouli.

2> Bo Hall definitely does not have Ross River Fever. That's good to know. Also good to know is that he struck out 4 in 3.2 scoreless innings. Nice. Josh Alliston deserves some love, too, for save number 9.

3> Bibbs, Gwynn, and Weeks combined to go only 1-for-8 but they also combined for 6 walks, two apiece. The former two each added a steal and the latter a sacrifice fly.

4> Adam Heether went yard again, #2 as a Snapper. THDH (Travis Hinton, only this time playing right) added a double, as did Bibbs. Heether, Hinton, and Prince each had two hits.

5> A. Sanchez committed an error. How ironic.

No game stories from the Bees' or Snappers' sites as of "post time", as Jim would say. Hopefully one or the other (or preferably both) will put something together for us by tomorrow.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

THE 24th MAN

Not much good news tonight. The Stars, erratic as always offensively, were completely handcuffed by Justin Germano, who threw his first complete game of the season. After Noochie Varner singled in the 3rd inning, Germano retired 20 of the last 21 to face him, including 18 straight. Of his 27 outs, ten were retired by ground out and seven struck out. He was efficient, working an eight-pitch 8th inning after a nine-pitch 7th inning and a nine-pitch 6th inning....... He went to a three-ball count only four times.

Fortunately, there's some other news to talk about........ The Milwaukee Brewers have finally filled the Stars' final roster spot after many moons have fallen........ In a trade with the San Francisco Giants, the Brewers handed over their 2nd baseman Eric Young in exchange for right-handed pitcher Greg Bruso, who will join the Stars for their four-game series vs. Carolina at Five County Stadium. He will be added to the Stars' rotation.

Bruso was ranked 22nd among the Giants' top minor league prospects this year........ He throws a 91 mph fastball, slider, and change, according to Baseball America....... In the Giants' deep well of pitching talent, he was expendable........ Bruso last pitched for Class AA-Norwich (East.), the Giants AA farm club. There he was 5-4 with a 3.42 ERA in 11 starts, striking out 45 and walking 11 in 76 1/3 innings. He pitched two complete games........ Earlier this season, he was a California League All-Star. He faced the High Desert Mavericks once this year and shut them out, I believe on three hits. With Fresno, he was 7-5 with a 3.11 ERA, striking out 77 and walking 11 in 84 IP.

Corey Hart was all the offense the Stars had tonight. His leadoff HR in the 2nd inning over the wall just to the right of the foul pole gave the Stars a 1-0 lead....... It was his league-best 88th RBI....... The Stars came close to scoring again in the 3rd inning after an infield hit by Ben Hendrickson. He took 2nd on a sacrifice. After Chris Barnwell lined out for the second out of the 3rd, Varner lashed an 0-2 pitch to 1st baseman Joe Gerber. Varner beat Gerber to the bag sliding in, but Hendrickson decided to go the distance, and was cut down at the plate to end the inning....... Brandon Gemoll and Brad Nelson would go deep with fly balls in the later innings, but that was all the news the Stars made tonight on the field.

The Stars turned an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play with runners on first and second, getting Hendrickson out of a jam, but Hendrickson would give up a pair of HRs --- the first time he's done that with Huntsville in two seasons....... Todd Donovan tied the game in the 3rd with a line drive HR over the Dodge sign in the left field corner, then J.J. Furmaniak in the 4th, muscled up and powered a two-run HR onto the hillside in left field to make it 3-1....... In the 7th, Todd Donovan added another home run, flipping his bat as he watched it go, to put the Bay Bears in front 4-1........ This guy is just a .206 hitter, and coming into this series against Huntsville, he was hitting .176 against Stars pitching, but four of his eight HRs this year have come against the Stars, and in this series, he finished 4-for-8 with five runs scored, three HRs, and four RBIs.

The Stars are 9-3 in their last 12 games. Despite the loss, they remain just ½ game in back of Birmingham because the Barons lost to Chattanooga tonight, 9-4, making four errors leading to five unearned runs....... Mobile's two wins in this series are the only games they have won in their last seven....... This season series closes with a 14-9 edge for the Stars, their 2nd best record in season series against Mobile in club history, by percentage points, at least. The 2001 Stars won 11 of 17 against Mobile........ The Stars will go with Pedro Liriano (9-11, 3.82) Thursday night. The Carolina Mudcats will probably go with Donnie Bridges (9-1, 2.74), currently 5th among Southern League ERA leaders.

Ernie Young, one of the heroes of the Stars' 1994 Championship season, hit a 3-run HR off Derek Lee in the 4th inning to give Toledo a 3-1 victory over Indianapolis, Tuesday night...... Derek is now 1-4 with a 4.37 ERA...... Richard Paz is hitting .278 for Indy with a .367 on-base pct. ...... The High Desert Mavericks lost their 90th game tonight, falling to Bakersfield, 2-0. They have won only 38 games this year........ Tampa Bay # 1 draft pick, former Orlando Rays pitcher, and Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider grad Dewon Brazelton, on a rehab assignment, allowed five hits in seven shutout innings for the Blaze..... Chad Petty, a possible starter for the Stars next year, pitched seven scoreless innings for the Mavs.
