Monday's Daily Menu :

The parent Brewers are off again -- take your pick among four evening audio choices...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

As discussed on the Major League forum, Ulice Payne was a guest of Jim Powell's during the Brewer game Sunday.

Ulice mentioned that during the Beloit Miller Park game, the Brewers had brought injured Helena catcher Lou Palmisano to town for the game, at which point Powell let out with an emphatic "Captain Lou!".

Thanks for building the love for the nickname, JP. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday

A couple of items might be a bit repetitive -- running it in its entirety tonight:

TONIGHT: The Indians and Toledo Mud Hens will meet in a doubleheader for the first two games of a three-game series. The teams will play seven times in the next two weeks to wrap-up the season. Tonight marks the start of 16 straight games against IL West rivals. The Indians are only 11-21 against division foes this season.

The Tribe hopes tonight's twinbill is nothing like Friday's when the first game at Charlotte went 18 innings. The six-hour, 20-minute marathon ended at 12:37 EDT. Game two started at 1:01 a.m., and didn't end until 2:55.

The Indians just finished a stretch where 21 of 26 games were against opponents from the IL's South division. The Indians went 10-11 in these recent match-ups, and 22-26 against South foes for the season.

The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 17 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .244 and have scored 49 runs (2.89 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in nine of the 17 games.

The Indians are a season-low 17 games under .500 for the third time this season. The last time the Tribe was 18 games below .500 was July 20, 1993. The last time the Indians were more than 18 games under came on Sept. 3, 1990 when they finished the season at -24.

HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: The Indians will celebrate Rowdie's 10th birthday with a mascot t-ball game between games of the DH.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 9-11 in that stretch, including a 7-6 mark at Victory Field.

YESTERDAY: Norfolk beat the Indians 7-4. The teams split all four series they played and finished the season with a 6-6 mark in head-to-head play. Jeff Duncan and Mike Glavine hit two-run homers in the first inning to lead the Tides. Jim Rushford and Pete Zoccolillo each drove in two runs for the Indians.

ON THE MOUND: Righthander Ben Ford makes his seventh start and 24th appearance for the Indians tonight. Since coming back into the rotation on Aug. 2, Ford has made three starts and has allowed five earned runs in 19.2 innings (2.29 ERA). The middle start of those three came on Aug. 7 at Toledo in a 2-1 Tribe win. Ford held the Hens to one run on two hits over seven innings. Ford also faced Toledo in his first start of the season on June 6. He took the loss after allowing three runs in five innings.

Lefthander Shane Nance will come out of the bullpen for a spot start in game two. Nance has not made a start since September 2000 when he pitched for Yakima during his rookie season. Nance currently boasts the longest scoreless innings streak in the minor leagues this season. Since May 23, Nance has worked 34.0 innings in 24 games without allowing a run. In that period, he has allowed 14 hits and five walks while striking out 26. The streak is the longest in the minors since Dodgers farmhand Orlando Rodriguez worked 35.0 consecutive scoreless innings last season. Beyond that, Norwich's Christian Parker put together 40.0 scoreless innings in 2000. Nance's longest outing this season was three innings against Scranton on June 13.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth with a .316 average and fifth with a .380 on-base percentage. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers having thrown out 53.3% of would-be basestealers.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Jim Rushford brings a season-long 10-game hitting streak into tonight's game. Rushford's longest hitting streak last season was 12 games in August. Alex Delgado has hit safely in 12 of 13 games since July 26 (.452, 19-for-42).

THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti recorded three assists in the first game of a doubleheader August 15. That brought his league-leading total to 19. Conti's assist total is the most in the IL since Jay Buhner (Columbus) had 20 in 1987. When the Indians were in the American Association, New Orleans' Kevin Koslofski had 19 assists in 1995. Buffalo's William Pennyfeather had 21 assists in 1993.

DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a major league rehabilitation assignment. Durocher made six one-inning appearances on rehab with the Indians in May going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA. After just six games back with Milwaukee (2-0, 11.04), Durocher was placed on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis.

BROTHERLY LOVE: RHPs Jason and Matt Childers are the first set of brothers to wear Indians uniforms at the same time since Aaron and Bret Boone suited up for the Tribe on June 19, 1997. Jason had the honor of saving Matt's first Triple-A win on August 7 at Toledo. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that feat has not happened in Major League Baseball since saves became an official statistic in 1969. The Childers brothers have previously been teammates in 1997 (Helena), 1998 (Beloit), 2000 (Mudville) and 2001 (Huntsville).

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Tuesday vs. Toledo - LHP Andy Van Hekken (3-6, 6.24) vs. LHP Derek Lee (1-3, 4.58)

As of "post time" (10:00 PM Central), you can jump on board via the audio link in the Daily Menu above. Tight, error-free game to this point. Brewers wasted some early scoring opportunities that look big in hindsight.

Milwaukee's 2003 7th round pick, RHP Brian Montalbo of the University of California by way of his home in Anchorage, Alaska, was extra sharp for his second straight appearance, but allowed a game-tying home run in the sixth. RHP Dan McKenna pitched scoreless baseball in the 7th and 8th, with a big strikeout-inducing curve ball working for him. He's still in as the 9th begins.

Birmingham wins, so the Stars remain one-half game back for the division lead; nice to see Ryan Miller with a "W" in relief -- he's no 0-7 pitcher, well, he's really better than a 1-7 pitcher, for that matter, but you know what I mean http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Indianapolis Game One Box Score:

Minor league hitting streaks (or on-base streaks) are really more impressive than major league streaks sometimes because as was the case here, if a home team wins a doubleheader game, you might not even get three plate appearances. Jim Rushford's ten-game streak ended here...

Until the Indy site doubleheader summary is available later on, we'll plug in the SportsTicker game notes for the twinbill opener:

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (Ticker) -- Ben Ford pitched a complete game to lift the Indianapolis Indians over the Toledo Mud Hens, 3-1, in the first game of the doubleheader. Ford (4-3) allowed just one run, six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in his first career complete-game performance.

Keith Luuloa blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring Rich Paz and Jim Rushford, to give Indianapolis a two-run cushion. Peter Zoccolillo and Cody McKay both doubled for the Indians, who won for just the second time in their last six games.

Cody Ross clubbed his 17th home run and Omar Infante and Brant Ust both had a pair of hits for Toledo, which dropped its fifth consecutive contest. Preston Larrison (0-1), who was promoted from Erie in the Class AA Eastern League, surrendered three runs -- two earned -- and three hits over 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Final: Ogden (Dodgers) 4, Helena 2

Brewers surrendered two in the top of the ninth, then had the tying runs on in the bottom of the inning before a groundball forceout ended matters.

Listening to this one tonight reminded me quite a bit of listening to any number of Milwaukee Brewer games this season -- wasted opportunities early on, the bats go silent late, and the team finds a way to lose in the end.

Fortunately for Helena, that hasn't been the usual script this season.

Huntsville Box Score:

Never trust the early line score, as you can see above, they gave Brian Adams the save when in fact it was regular closer Mike Adams; only four Stars had base hits in this one, and one was pitcher Ryan Miller; David Krynzel did steal his 41st base after drawing a walk -- his strikeout-within-a-game streak continues as well...

A couple of pleasant surprises here with a couple of activations off of the disabled list! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Your starting pitcher was Beloit RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, touched up for four base hits in a limited start, but hopefully he felt fine afterwards. Your leadoff hitter was Charlie Fermaint, the very young 2003 4th round OF who had injured a shoulder in a stolen base attempt a few weeks back after such a nice start to his pro career.

RHP Hubert Pruett settled down after being roughed up upon replacing Wilhelmsen, as he and RHP Tim Dillard allowed only one run over the final seven innings.

We had linked to an article or two about RHP Nick Bates, who hadn't been seen as of late since one pitching appearance early on. Interesting to see him here as the DH, and it does appear that the 1-for-4 day and .250 thus YTD average belongs to Nick Bates, and not the Brewers' young OF, Dallas Bates.

Indy Site Doubleheader Summary:

Yeah, Jason Conti added to his assist total...

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians swept a doubleheader from the Toledo Mud Hens on Monday night at Victory Field by taking the first game 3-1 and picking up a 5-1 win in the nightcap. Keith Luuloa paced the Indians offense by collecting three hits and four RBI in the two games.

Ben Ford started for Indianapolis in game one, going the distance while holding the Mud Hens to only one run on six hits.

Matt Childers earned the victory with 2.1 innings of relief in the second game, as the Indians spoiled Steve Avery's first starting assignment since the 2000 season.

Luuloa provided all the offense Ford and the Tribe would need courtesy of a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one. Luuloa's blast was the first Indians hit in the contest, as the two baserunners scoring ahead of Luuloa were Rich Paz, who had led off the fourth inning with a walk, and Jim Rushford, who had reached on an error by Toledo first baseman Patrick Lennon.

Ford (4-3) struck out six in a 7.0 inning complete game effort, marking his third straight quality start. Over his last three starts, Ford has allowed only three runs in a combined 20.0 innings for a 1.35 ERA.

Preston Larrison (0-1) took the loss for Toledo in game one, pitching 5.1 innings in his Triple-A debut. Larrison allowed only three hits in the ballgame, but all three went for extra bases on two doubles and Luuloa's homer.

In game two, Shane Nance made his first start for the Tribe after 24 relief appearances thus far in 2003. Nance, who entered the game with a streak of 34.0 consecutive scoreless innings, allowed a two-out solo home run to Cody Ross in the top of the first inning. Nance lasted 3.2 innings allowing one run on six hits while also striking out six Mud Hens before giving way to Matt Childers with two outs in the fourth. Childers pitched 2.1 innings allowing one hit while striking out one to pick up the victory.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the third, the Indians came back to tie the score when Steve Scarborough blasted a solo home run off of Avery leading off the frame.

The Tribe then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring two runs when Rushford's sacrifice fly brought home Luuloa, and Wilton Veras scored on a wild pitch.

Avery (1-3) pitched 3.1 innings for Toledo allowing five hits and three runs, though only one of those runs was earned.

The Indians added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings on an RBI single by Luuloa in the fifth, and an RBI double by Scarborough in the sixth.

Jason Conti picked up his 20th outfield assist of the season in top of the fifth inning in game one when he gunned down Andres Torres' attempt to stretch a single into a double. The 20 outfield assists equal that of Jay Buhner, who recorded 20 with the Columbus Clippers in 1987.

The Indians (57-72) and Mud Hens (61-69) will complete the three-game series on Tuesday night at Victory Field when the Tribe sends lefty Derek Lee (1-3, 4.58) to the mound against Toledo's Andy Van Hekken (3-6, 6.24).

Indianapolis Star Game Story:

Steve Scarborough "Action Shot" and high praise for Steve from Cecil Cooper; no need to sign a Manny Alexander-type for AAA SS/2B next year -- Steve will be 26 in March and more than available for spot duty as the major league utility middle infielder, although his own aspirations are probably a bit higher-- nice job of hanging in there in 2003 after the dreadful start...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

MILLER NIGHT

The bullpen keeps coming up with the goods....... A 1.87 ERA this month. Four wins. Four losses. Eight saves....... But who would expect someone on the weakest hitting staff in history to come up with the go-ahead hit tonight?

Pretty hot and steamy night in Mobile, as it has been all over the South this month........ The Stars, still a half-game behind the streaking Birmingham Barons, volleyed back and forth through the first third of this game........ Jon Knott's sacrifice fly put the Bay Bears ahead in the 1st and after Huntsville came back on Mobile's porous defense (eight errors in three games of this series), 2-1..........

Mobile had committed three errors coming into the 4th inning, 1) an E-1 on a pickoff throw by Rojas, 2) an error by 2B Jake Gautreau in the 2nd, and 3) another errant pickoff throw by Rojas in the 3rd....... An E-9 was taken off the board in the 4th when Bobby Scales caught a liner and tried to pickoff Noochie Varner, who had reached on a force, but no one was charged with an error on a rundown play that Varner simply beat the low throw by kicking the ball out of the Gautreau's glove.

Todd Donovan scored on what looked like an inside-the-park home run in the 3rd. Donovan hit a 1-0 pitch past the diving Brad Nelson, who chased it into the bullpen area and against the wall as he was waved around second. Nelly overthrew the cutoff man, J.J. Hardy, as Donovan was waved around third. The ball skipped under Mike Kremblas's glove, still able to block it, and he scored........ J.J. would have had a chance to get the runner at the plate had he gotten the throw, but that's all moot, now........ That tied the game........ After some deliberation in the press box, where they were taping the game, Nelson was given an error on the throw.

A fine relief outing by Ryan Miller allowed the Stars to get back into this game in the 7th inning....... Brandon Gemoll hit Chris Rojas's first pitch past a diving Gautreau for a single. A wild pitch that caromed from the screen back to catcher Kevin Reinking allowed Gemoll to reach second....... After Varner grounded back to Rojas, Mobile played a little strategy, intentionally walking .202-hitting left-hander power hitter Nelson to pitch to Kremblas........ Kremblas may be hitting around the Mendoza line, but against the Bay Bears this season, he's the Stars' 3rd best hitter against Mobile, batting .286 with one HR and six RBI. Think he came through?........ WRONG........ Kremblas flied to center.........

OK. All is not lost. Miller is at the plate........ I don't think most fans listening tonight knew Miller led a .109 pitching corps in hitting, but he did, and he took a .286 average home with him tonight...... He smoked a 3-2 pitch back to the mound. The ball caromed off the leg of Rojas into foul territory. Miller went to 2nd on Jon Knott's wild throw to home plate, the Bay Bears' 4th error, to score Gemoll with the go-ahead run....... With Miller on 2nd and Nelson on 3rd, Alejandro Machado, .324 vs. Mobile as he stepped to the plate, delivered the ax....... Batting right-handed, he hit a 2-0 pitch over the top of the 3rd base bag and down the left field line for a double. Nelson walked in and Miller was waved home. 5-2........ Dave Krynzel walked and stole 2nd, his 41st stolen base of the year, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Hardy popped out to end the inning......

Miller retired nine of ten batters and that was all she wrote. in addition to getting the game-winning hit, Ryan finally picked up his first victory of the year........ Miller, by the way, has an 8.10 ERA in his 7 losses. A meaningless statistic, but I was curious.

The word on Kade Johnson is good. His forearm is black and blue, but there's no longer any swelling and he says he can now throw....... He could be able to go Tuesday night. He'll have a day off Wednesday, anyway, when the Stars take a travel day to go to Five County Stadium in Zebulon, North Carolina and visit the Mudcats for their first and only time this season........

Chattanooga has officially been moved to the Eastern Division next season. The Montgomery Biscuits (gag), will join Mobile, Birmingham, Huntsville, and Jackson in the West.......

The Atlanta Braves called up former Greenville Brave first baseman Mike Hessman from Richmond, Monday night. It will be his first look at the majors...... He was a fearsome power hitter against the Stars in 2000 and 2001, who could ruin your night....... He hit a game-winning RBI single against us in the 9th, August 29, 2001 and the next night, a 3-run HR off Derek Lee, which turned out to be the winning hit in that game......... He was a fearsome power hitter, but most times he looked like Dave Nicholson at the plate. He hit just .183 in 437 ABs in 2000 and struck out 178 times. He hit four of his five HRs against the Stars that season and over two seasons, two doubles and five HRs, driving in 13 runs........ Like I said though, you got him out most of the time. In spite of the damage, he hit just .202 against the Stars, striking out 21 times in 69 ABs (.304).

Brandon Gemoll lifted his average over the .270 mark for the first time since May 9. He's 21-for-60 (.350) this month with seven RBIs and he's only struck out seven times........ Dave Krynzel made it 12 straight games with a strikeout tonight. The record, since my records on this can only go back to 1996, is 14 by T.R. Marcinczyk during the 1998 season......... To show you how serious this strikeout problem is going lately, I'll give you a little insight. Dave has struck out at a .418 clip this month --- 28 Ks in 67 ABs, but from April to July, he struck out 76 times in 357 ABs, a .213 percentage. .......Corey Hart's double tonight was his 4th in his last five games.

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

Ogden's pitcher tonight, RH Mike Megrew (a Rhode Island kid) has now struck out 82 and walked only 17 in 62 IP, so when the Brewers didn't take advantage of his uncharacteristic wildness early on, I figured the Crew was in trouble as I listened in...

Helena Site with additional details:

With a runner on thrid and one out in the top of the ninth, Dan McKenna balked in the winning run as Ogden beat Helena 4-2 Monday night in game one of a four game series at Kindrick Field in Helena. The Raptors got one more run before the inning was over. Helena had two on with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, but were flushed out when Andri Gomez was thrown out at second on a fielders choice.

Guilder Rodriguez went two-for-four with a double and a stolen base for the Brewers. Manny Ramirez went two-for-four with an RBI. Robby Deevers, Vinny Rottino and Terry Trofholz all singled for the Brewers.

Brian Montalbo started for the Brewers going six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. McKenna pitched two and a thrid allowing two runs on four hits, striking out four. McKenna picked up his first loss of the season and is now 1-1. Simon Beresford pitched a perfect final two thrids for Helena.

The Brewers and the Raptors play game two of their series in Helena Tuesday night at 7:05 pm (8:05 Central). The Brewers are home every night through the 24th of August.

Helena Box Score:

OF Drew Anderson, who's missed a few games, was able to pinch-hit in the 9th (walk); suddenly 2B Guilder Rodriguez decides he's an extra-base hit machine, with two in his last two games, his only two for the season...
