Wednesday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

Arizona A's 10, Arizona Brewers 8

This team has really been scuffling lately. At least Forrest Martin got promoted... I'm sure all of the youngsters are happy for the 23-year old right-hander.

Nice outing from Robbie Wooley, whose 2.81 ERA is very impressive. Gilbert Acosta had a fantastic day: 4 hits, a run, an RBI, two doubles, and a steal. Adam Mannon did some yardwork and picked up 4 RBI. Both Guhring and Phillips added 2 hits as well.

Nice job, except for that whole "loss" thing.

EDIT: You beat me with the box by a few minutes, Bill -- so I'll paste my comments here - MassBrew

Tale of two top 2003 RHP high school draft picks, as 6th rounder Robbie Wooley threw five solid innings and 8th rounder Ryan Marion had a tough go of things today. Marion's been solid otherwise, and there's no point in fretting about a tough outing or two for kids like Wooley, Marion, Tommy Hawk, or Tyler Morrison, all high school righties who have had good showings this summer; SS Gilberto Acosta is looking more and more like Beloit's shortstop in 2004, and not Helena's...

Columbus (Yankees) 3, Indianapolis 2

Derrin Ebert picks up the loss after a cross-country flight from California. Is there a better name in the IL than Fernando Seguignol? I can't think of one. JJ Furmaniak is my favorite name in all of minor league baseball, though... Anyway:

Wes Helms with a single and a punchout in 3 rehab ABs. Cody McKay with a pair of doubles and Ryan Knox a pair of singles and a pair of steals. Good outings by Foster, Childers (Matt), and Ebert... although the latter picks up a hard-luck loss.

IndyIndians.com Site Game Summary:

Fernando Seguignol's solo home run leading off the fourth inning propelled the Columbus Clippers to the victory over the visiting Indianapolis Indians 3-2 on Wednesday evening. Seguignol's league-leading 26th homer was his eighth in 13 games against the Indians this season.

The Indians (57-73) scored single runs in the first and second innings to gather an early 2-0 lead against Columbus starting pitcher Eric Schmitt, but Columbus answered back with two in the bottom of the second on a triple off the bat of Curtis Pride to even the score.

Ryan Knox scored the game's first run in the top of the first following a single leading off the ballgame. Knox went on to steal both second and third base in the inning before Jim Rushford lined a one-out single to right field to plate Knox with the game's first run.

In the second, Cody McKay led off the inning with a double to deep right and later scored on Steve Scarborough's sacrifice fly as the Indians took a 2-0 lead. The Tribe offense showed signs of breaking through early, as the team picked up six base hits in the first two innings of the ballgame in taking the early lead.

From there, however, the bats went silent as Indianapolis managed only three hits over the final seven innings. Schmitt (5-0) pitched 6.0 innings, retiring the final eight batters he faced, before turning the game over to the Columbus bullpen to open the seventh inning. The Clippers used four relievers to nail down the victory, as Sam Marsonek pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 16th save of the season.

Derrin Ebert (0-1), making his first appearance with the Tribe this season, pitched 5.0 innings allowing seven hits and all three Columbus runs, including the deciding blast off the bat of Seguignol. Ebert, the Indians representative in the 2002 Triple-A All-Star game, had pitched in both the Arizona and Chicago Cubs organizations this season before signing back with the Brewers in early August.

The Indians and Clippers will conclude the two game series on Thursday evening when lefty Luis Martinez (3-0, 0.86) takes the mound for the Tribe to face Christian Parker (6-6, 4.81) and Columbus. The Tribe will then travel to Louisville for a three-game weekend series before returning for the final homestand of the season on Monday at Victory Field.

Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 9, High Desert 8

What a game. Tommy Marx threw a wild pitch with a runner on third to end it in the bottom of the sixteenth. The California League has a 12AM curfew that doesn't allow an inning to begin after midnight. Apparently, that curfew can be waived at the discretion of the home team. Tonight, Bakersfield elected to keep on playing.

J.M. Gold joined Mike Lindskog in the booth for what was supposed to be just a few innings. He was supposed to be charting but that was "optional" and he was "taking a break". The break ended up being more than a full game's worth.

http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

The two were really having fun... lots of great back-and-forths. J.M. is hilarious - very dry sense of humor and he has the "fake arrogance" bit down cold. He was able to take offense to pretty much anything... Lindskog mentioned that one of the Blaze hitters had two homers (or something like that) and Gold, with total seriousness, was like "thanks a lot - I gave up one of those". Hilarious. Some tidbits:

- He's getting married, but not for a while, to girlfriend Jackie

- Greg Schaub got married and has a "cute little house" in Illinois with a "cute little shed." He's coaching at some school I can't remember - Western Illinois State or something like that. J.M. had a lot of fun with the "cute" jokes all night.

- His birthday is the tenth, but they always get it wrong on rosters and stuff - 4/18/80 is wrong, 4/10/80 is right; we've got it wrong at BrewerFan - Jim or Brian, want to fix that?

- Lindskog thinks his wife has a crush on Gold... "She's only human", J.M. explained

- Nice comments from J.M. about Charlie Lozada; the 19-year old got to hit BP against the rehabbing pitchers like J.M., Diggins, Durocher, etc. while in Arizona; he has played more third than catcher, and J.M. says he is improving every time out there

J.M. provided a lot of intelligent comments about the game, the league, and his teammates. Good stuff... one of the best "player-in-the-booth" stints I've ever heard. He took over by himself in the fifteenth so that Mike could call his wife. I must say, if J.M. ever gives up playing, he's got a future in the booth.

Those of you who never listen to the Mavs are really missing out.

Someone in the know told me nobody reads anything after the box score so I wanted to get that out of the way first. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

You have got to be kidding me, High Desert!

Batman, I too, listened to this one, and when the Mavs scored three in the ninth to extend their lead to 8-3, I called it a night, citing a very late East Coast time of night and pretty comfortable that the guys had snapped their eight-game losing streak. Give up five in the bottom of the ninth?!?!

%*#@& !

And yes, I too, am now a J.M. Gold fan -- great fun on his part, and he spoke very honestly and intelligently upon his own situation (off the 40-man, etc.)

High Desert Site Game Summary:

BAKERSFIELD, CA - On the brink of snapping an eight-game losing streak, things went sour on Wednesday night for the High Desert Mavericks. The Bakersfield Blaze got five runs in the ninth inning and finally a run in the 16th, as they defeated the Mavs by a final score of 9-8 at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield. The game marked the longest of the season for both teams, lasting five hours and twenty minutes.

Tommy Marx (0-4) allowed a leadoff double to Adam Bonner to open the 16th. After being sacrificed to third on a bunt by Heath Kelly, Bonner scored on a wild pitch that went to the backstop.

Bonner's three-run homer off Bobby Bystrowski in the ninth sent the game into extra innings. For Bonner, it was his second of the night and four in five games against the Mavs this week.

Mavs starter Chris Saenz left with a 5-2 lead after five innings. The right-hander struck out eight men, while allowing two earned runs on just two hits.

Leading 5-3 in the ninth, High Desert added three insurance runs in the top half of the frame, but saw the 8-3 lead erased in the bottom half, as the Blaze scored five runs against Bystrowski to force extras.

The Mavs got out to an early lead as Jeremy Frost's two-run blast to center field put the Mavs up 2-0 in the second. Bonner's first of two home runs, a two-run shot to right field off Saenz, knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.

The Mavs took the lead in the third, as Scott Candelaria's RBI single knocked in Froilan Villanueva for a 3-2 lead. They got one in the fourth, as Todd West's RBI single off Blaze starter Chris Seddon scored Johnny Raburn for a 4-2 lead. Raburn's second of four hits on the game, came in the fifth inning, knocking in Villanueva for a 5-2 lead.

Raburn led the Mavs with four hits on the game, his second four-hit game of the year. High Desert pounded out a season-best 20 hits on the night, after being held to just five the previous night.

Carlos Hines (1-1) of the Blaze got the win with three scoreless innings of relief.

Justin Backsmeyer had a great outing out of the pen, going 3.2 scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit.

The Mavs have now lost nine straight to tie their longest losing streak of 2003. They are just 13-46 in the second half and just 38-91 overall. They look to break a five-game skid against the Blaze on Thursday evening, as J.M. Gold (1-1) throws for the Mavs, while Jarrett Campbell (3-3) goes to the hill for the Blaze. Game time on Thursday night begins at 7:15 (9:15 Central) from Bakersfield.

The Mavs finish up their series with the Blaze on Thursday then travel to Modesto for three straight games with the A's. The Mavs return to Mavericks Stadium on Tuesday, August 26th against the Lancaster JetHawks.

High Desert Box Score:

Gold is limited to 50-60 pitches tonight, so a worn-out pen will be extended yet again; I still can't believe this team found a way to lose this game -- ugh!
