Friday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Indianapolis Media Notes for Friday thru Sunday:

THIS WEEKEND: The Indians head to Louisville on the heels of a two-game sweep at Columbus. The Indians are just 2-9 against the Bats this season including a 1-4 mark at Slugger Field.

On Aug. 19, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals. The Tribe is 2-3 in this stretch, and 13-24 against division foes overall this season.

The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 22 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .252 and have scored 63 runs (2.86 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in 11 of the 22 games.

The Indians are a season-low 18 games under .500 for the first time since July 20, 1993. The last time the Indians have been more than 18 games below .500 was on Sept. 3, 1990 when the Tribe finished the season 24 games under (61-85).

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 11-14 in that stretch, including a 9-7 mark at Victory Field.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut will make his 12th start and 17th appearance Friday. Teut's last win came on July 20 against Norfolk. Since then he is 0-2 with three no decisions. The Indians have won all three of the games when Teut has not received a decision. Teut's last outing came on Aug. 16 against Norfolk. He gave up five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Teut faced the Bats on July 4 and took the loss in a 3-1 contest allowing two runs in five innings.

Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 26th start on Saturday. Coco also paces the Tribe with nine wins, 133.1 innings and 92 strikeouts. This will be his second attempt at win number 10. He took the loss in his last start, Aug. 17 vs. Norfolk, allowing five runs in five innings. Coco was called for three balks in that game. Coco made back-to-back starts against the Bats in April and took the loss in both outings. He combined to give up nine runs in 11.0 innings. At the plate, Coco is hitting .278 this season and had a five-game hitting streak snapped in his last start.

Righthander Ben Ford will get the ball Sunday. This will be his fifth start since coming back into the rotation on Aug. 2, and his eighth start overall. In his last four starts, Ford is 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA (6 ER / 26.2 IP). He has allowed just one earned run in each of his last three starts (1.35 ERA). Ford's last start was a complete game effort against Toledo in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 18. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six in seven innings. Ford has made three relief appearances against Louisville this season allowing one earned run in 5.0 innings.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth in the IL with a .313 average and fifth with a .377 on-base percentage. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers having thrown out 53.3% of would-be basestealers.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Jim Rushford has hit safely in 23 of 26 games since July 27 (.308, 32-for-104). Alex Delgado has hit safely in 13 of 15 games since July 26 (.417, 20-for-48) .

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Monday vs. Louisville - RHP Todd Van Poppel (3-2, 2.79) vs. LHP Derrin Ebert (0-1, 5.40)

Tuesday vs. Louisville - RHP Matt Belisle (2-2, 2.12) vs. LHP Luis Martinez (3-0, 1.16)

Indianapolis 1, Louisville (Reds) 0

Nice win for the Indians. Nate Teut with a stellar start and the brothers Childer finish things off. Richard Paz is the man - anyone else think he deserves a September callup?

IndyIndians.com Site Game Summary:

Behind Richard Paz's run scoring single in the top the eighth inning, the visiting Indianapolis Indians defeated the Louisville Bats 1-0 in a thrilling contest Friday evening at Louisville's Slugger Field. Paz's third base hit of the evening scored Indians pinch hitter Wilton Veras from third base with two outs in the inning for the only run scored in the first of a three game series.

Indianapolis closer Jason Childers pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory for Tribe starting pitcher Nate Teut. Teut (3-5) pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven while holding the Bats to only four hits.

The Indians (58-75) had collected only three hits heading into the top of the eighth inning, but broke through with a run off of Louisville reliever Joey Hamilton (8-3) with four straight singles in taking a 1-0 lead. Following a Steve Scarborough strikeout leading off the frame, Veras pinch hit for Teut by hitting a single through the left side of the Bats' infield. Ryan Knox followed with a base hit of his own, ripping a single to left field allowing Veras to move into third base, but on the play Knox was caught trying to advance to second base. With two outs and Veras on third, Paz lined a single through the middle and off the glove of a diving second baseman Andrew Beattie as Veras crossed home plate with the game's first run.

Matt Childers entered the game for Indianapolis in the bottom of the eighth inning and struck out two batters in a scoreless frame before turning the game over to his older brother Jason in the ninth. Looking to pick up his 10th save of the season, Jason Childers allowed back-to-back singles to Emil Brown and Michael Coleman leading off the inning. After Jim Chamblee reached on an error by Tribe shortstop Scarborough, the bases were loaded for Louisville pinch hitter Kevin Baez. With a drawn in infield, Beaz grounded a Childers offering to Keith Luuloa at third base, Luuloa quickly fired to catcher Cody McKay for a force at home before McKay wheeled and fired to first base to complete the double play. Then with two outs and runners on second and third, Jason Maxwell hit a line drive to right field caught by Pete Zoccolillo for the game's final out, stranding the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position.

Dustin Mosely started for Louisville, but left due to injury after batting in the bottom of the fifth inning. Moseley lined a single over the head of Indians centerfielder Ryan Knox, but made it only as far as first base on the play before leaving the game in obvious pain. The injury, later diagnosed as a dislocated left shoulder, forced the Bats to turn to reliever Rick Crushore to open the sixth inning. Crushore issued three walks in two hitless innings of relief before being lifted in favor of Hamilton to start the eighth.

The Indians and Bats (74-59) will continue the series on Saturday evening when Pasqual Coco (9-8, 4.79) takes the mound for the Tribe against lefty Chris Michalak (1-0, 4.60). The Tribe return to Victory Field on Monday to open a six-game homestand, the final homestand of the 2003 season.

Three in a row... that's not good. What's up with Mr. Krynzel? Two more strikeouts and again hitless in four at-bats. Jason Shelley with another quality start and two hits of his own - what can't this guy do? Machado and Hart both add a pair of hits but no Stars player drew a walk. Yikes.

Apparently it was more than rain in Helena:

Helena and Provo were hailed out when a freak storm came across Mount Helena Friday Night. There will be a double-header played Saturday night.

For all the parents of the rookie league players away from home for the first time, we've had incredible record heat in Arizona, terrible wildfires causing smoky conditions in Helena, and now this.

Now all we need is for the Helena bus to be stranded for ten hours by hitting a cow in the road (Brewers' Ogden team, 2002).
