Link Report for Games of Saturday, August 23rd

MassBrew

Saturday's Daily Menu :

That "TBD" guy is pitching at three levels for the Milwaukee system today; we could research things and make semi-educated guesses as to who's starting in each case, but we'll let the games fall into place and see who takes the mound...

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

Indy Site Game Summary:

Richard Paz is a minor league free agent at season's end - the Brewers will surely see if they can re-sign him, but a 40-man roster spot is unlikely; we'll have to see how Jason Childers' hand is -- see below...

LOUISVILLE, KY -- Richard Paz and Pete Zoccolillo combined for seven hits in eight at bats as the Indianapolis Indians picked up a 9-6 victory over the Louisville Bats on Saturday evening in the second game of a three-game series at Slugger Field. The Indians tied a season-high with 17 hits in the ballgame as Pasqual Coco earned his team leading 10th victory on the year.

Paz followed up a 3-for-3 night on Friday by going 4-for-4 with a walk in Saturday night's game, and has now reached base safely an amazing nine straight times over the first two games of the series while raising his batting average to .350 on the season. Zoccolillo, meanwhile, was 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI in the game, driving home runs in the first, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Tribe offense sent eight batters to the plate against Louisville starter Chris Michalak (1-1) en route to scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead. In the inning, Zoccolillo provided the key blow with a two-run double to score Coco and Paz with two outs which gave the Tribe a 4-3 lead.

The Indians (59-75) added to their lead in the very next inning by again sending eight batters to the plate, this time scoring three runs against Bats reliever Lance Davis to take an 8-3 lead.

After giving up three runs in his first two innings, Coco settled down to retire nine in a row before allowing a one out single in the bottom of the fifth. Coco allowed a two-run home run to Calvin Pickering in the bottom of the first, and gave up an RBI single to Mark Budzinski in the second. Ahead 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Coco allowed his second home run of the day to Pickering, a leadoff shot to left centerfield. Coco left after 6.0 innings leading 8-5, having allowed eight hits. At the plate Coco helped his cause by picking up two hits in three at bats while scoring two runs and driving home two more.

Roberto Giron picked up the save for Indianapolis when he became the third Tribe pitcher used in the bottom of the ninth inning. Travis Miller relieved Shane Nance, who had struck out five in his two innings of relief, by walking the leadoff man Budzinski and then allowing a single to Wilton Guerrero. With runners on first and third and still no outs, Jason Childers was brought into the game to face Emil Brown. Childers faced only one batter, however, as Brown lined into a fielder's choice that first ricocheted off of Childers' hand before Wilton Veras picked it up and threw out Guerrero at second base. Following the play Childers was removed in favor of Giron, who pitched the final 0.2 innings to earn his 15th save of the season.

The Indians will look for a sweep of the three-game series on Sunday when righthander Ben Ford (4-3, 2.57) takes the mound for the Indians to face Scott Randall (10-3) and Louisville. The Indians then return home to Victory Field to open the final homestand of the 2003 season when the Bats also make the trip from Louisville for a brief two-game set at Victory Field.

Modesto (A's) 3, High Desert 2

High Desert Game Summary:

The Mavs' site is having update issues, so Mike Lindskog was kind enough to file his game report via email with Brewerfan...

Modesto, CA - The High Desert Mavericks dropped their second straight game on Saturday night, losing a close one to the Modesto A's by a final score of 3-2.

Danny Kolb pitched one of his best games of the season, striking out a season-best ten men. Kolb (5-12) matched A's starter Marc Sauer (4-2) until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the A's scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead.

With two outs, Jed Morris hit a bleeder through the right side of the infield for a base hit. Mark Teahen lifted a fly ball to left

field that was misplayed by left fielder Johnny Raburn. Morris scored the go-ahead run as the A's took the lead for good at 2-1. Jason Perry followed with a run-scoring single as the A's went up 3-1.

The Mavs got within a run in the eighth, as Scott Candelaria picked up his third hit of the night, and his second RBI, driving in Chris Morris from third base. After Froilan Villanueva legged out an infield single to put runners at first and second, John Toner was robbed of a base hit by an over-the-shoulder catch by Omar Quintanilla.

In the ninth, Jeff Coleman shut down the Mavs in order, striking out Jeremy Frost to end it, and record his fourth save.

The Mavs and A's square off on Sunday night in the final road game of the year for the Mavs. Chad Petty (0-9) takes on Christian Gonzalez (3-2) at 6:05 (8:05 Central) from Modesto.

Helena Game One Box Score:

Dare we say LHP Carlos Ramirez has looked pretty ordinary as of late -- we'll remind ourselves he just turned 19; tough night for catcher Carlos Corporan with three passed balls...

Helena Game Two Box Score:

First three Helena batters of the game set the table for Manny Ramirez' grand slam; RHP Judd Richardson's early exit is cause for concern, given his injury history -- we'll see; 7th round RHP Brian Montalbo has been super for several weeks now; looks like the Brewers transferred catcher Charlie Lozada from High Desert to Helena in light of Alberto Segura's broken wrist...

Pascual Coco has amazing consistency. This is third staight year that he has an ERA of 4.91 at AAA. Thats not much progress, and I doubt he'll be in this organization for more than another week.
