Monday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday:

TONIGHT: The Indians open the final homestand of the season. The Tribe is coming off a 3-2 road trip. The Indians dropped the first two games at Columbus, but came back to sweep three games from first-place Louisville. The Tribe will look to continue the winning streak with two more games against the Bats to open the homestand.

The Bats are managed by Rick Burleson. The former shortstop was a teammate of Cecil Cooper's in Boston from 1974-76.

On Aug. 19, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals. The Tribe is 5-3 in this stretch, and 16-24 against division foes overall this season.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 14-14 in that stretch, including a 9-7 mark at Victory Field.

YESTERDAY: The Indians completed a three-game sweep of Louisville with an 8-4 win. The Tribe had 17 hits for the second consecutive game. Jason Conti led the way with a 4-for-5 night. He scored three runs. Cody McKay and Ryan Knox each had two RBI.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Derek Lee makes his seventh start and 13th appearance for the Indians tonight. Lee has lost his last two appearances despite allowing just three earned runs in 13.1 innings (2.03 ERA). On Aug. 15, Lee was the final pitcher in the Tribe's 18-inning game at Charlotte. He worked 5.1 innings of relief, but was beaten by an unearned run. Lee went back into the rotation on Aug. 19 and held Toledo to three runs over eight innings, but suffered a 3-1 defeat. Lee started the season with Double-A Huntsville and was 11-3 with a 3.40 ERA when he was promoted to Indy on July 4. His first start came against the Bats on July 6. Lee took the loss in that contest allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth in the IL with a .313 average and fifth with a .375 on-base percentage. Alex Delgado ranks third among IL catchers having thrown out 51.7% of would-be basestealers.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Rich Paz has tied his season-long, seven-game hitting streak. Over the streak, Paz is hitting (.533, 16-for-30). Since joining the Tribe on July 25, Paz has reached base safely in 27 of 29 games (.415 OBP). Ryan Knox has a season-long, six-game hitting streak. He has hit .385 (10-for-26) on his streak. Knox is tied for the team lead with 13 steals despite playing in just 29 games. Jim Rushford has hit safely in 25 of 29 games since July 27 (.307, 35-for-114). Alex Delgado has hit safely in 13 of 16 games since July 26 (.385, 20-for-52).

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Tuesday vs. Louisville - RHP Matt Belisle (2-2, 2.12) vs. LHP Luis Martinez (3-0, 1.16)

Wednesday vs. Toledo - RHP Pat Ahearne (4-5, 3.64) vs. LHP Nate Teut (3-5, 4.40)

Thursday vs. Toledo - RHP Seth Greisinger (5-9, 4.22) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (10-8, 4.91)

Any chance Derek Lee gets a September callup? He's pitched well of late.

Any chance of him getting sent back down - we could do with someone on the team who has started shaving!

Only joking, if anyone has earnt his shot at the majors D Lee certainly has. What can it cost Milwaukee to push him up there and see what happens? Are they worried it might hurt their wildcard chances??????????

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS ? The Indianapolis Indians defeated the Louisville Bats for a fourth straight day, picking up a 5-2 win at Victory Field on Monday night. After having swept the Bats in a three-game series at Louisville over the weekend, the Tribe opened the final homestand of the season by scoring all five runs in the first three innings of the ballgame.

Louisville scored first when former Indian Mark Budzinski lined a double off the wall in dead centerfield leading off the game. He then came around to score on an Emil Brown RBI single. Brown scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Michael Coleman to put the Bats on top 2-0.

The Indians answered back in the bottom half of the first inning when Ryan Knox helped manufacture a run by leading off the inning with a bunt single down the first base line. Knox took second base with his 14th steal of the season, moved to third on Rich Paz?s sacrifice bunt, and then scored on a two-out wild pitch by Louisville starter Todd Van Poppel.

Cody McKay gave the Tribe the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning when he launched his sixth home run of the season deep to right field. McKay?s blast was a two-run shot, as Jason Conti had reached ahead of him on a leadoff single. Next batter Steve Scarborough narrowly missed going back-to-back with McKay as his team-leading sixth triple bounced off the very top of the left field wall. Scarborough scored one batter later on Derek Lee?s bloop single over the heads of a drawn in left side of the Louisville infield.

The Tribe made it 5-2 in the third inning when Pete Zoccolillo drew a walk to lead off the frame against Van Poppel. He then scored on Jason Conti?s triple off the top of the wall in right field.

Following the two-run first inning, Tribe starter Derek Lee settled down by closing the door on the Louisville offense. Lee allowed only two hits over his next 6.2 innings, lasting into the eighth while allowing five hits and two runs.

Lee (2-4) was relieved by Shane Nance with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nance, who was brought on to face Russell Branyan with a runner on first, pitched the final 1.1 innings striking out all four batters he faced to pick up his second save of the season.

Van Poppel, making his fourth start of the season, allowed all eight Indians hits in 6.0 innings to take the loss and drop to 3-3.

The Indians and Bats will conclude the two-game series at Victory Field on Tuesday evening when the Tribe sends lefty Luis Martinez (3-0, 1.16) to the hill to face Louisville?s young righty Matt Belisle (2-2, 2.12).

By the way, Burlington won and Cedar Rapids' game was suspended, so I don't believe Beloit clinched a spot last night. Magic number is probably one, though.

Any chance Derek Lee gets a September callup? He's pitched well of late.

40-man spots will be awfully tight, especially in anticipation of the players in the DeJean trade, and players called up in September still need to be added to the 40-man roster. So look for Luis Martinez, Shane Nance, John Foster, and Matt Childers, and a bat in Cody McKay (also because every team adds a third catcher in September).

Awfully hard to picture another pitcher added to that call-up list. Not so hard to picture the Brewers maneuvering the 40-man with a 60-day DL stint or two to add another bat like Jim Rushford, Jason Conti, or even Pete Zoccolillo.

Anyone notice Nance's line???

4 K's in 1 1/3 innings--what more can he do in AAA?

I'm with Al on this one, bring him up and use him properly and he will prosper. He has to be a better option than Vizcaino/Estrella/etc.

I agree Nance should get another look in September.

Another guy who should get a callup is Cody McKay. Like several guys at Indy, he had a terrible first half but has picked it up in the second. He is also already on the 40 man roster.

Given the continued struggles of Eddie Perez since the break, they need to look at other potential options for next year.

I would avoid calling up McKay. Our pitching staff has been clicking and our catching tandem has been far better than advertised.

I would like to see us call up Nance and Foster (since they're on the 40 man), Zocco and Rushford (good stories...older OFs who simply produce), the Childers brothers (Jason deserves it, and Matt probably does, too), and Derek Lee (we all know why...give him 3-4 starts...he needs a chance. I don't want to take a chance that we'll lose the next Jamie Moyer for free). As for Luis Martinez, it'd be nice to see him, but at the same time his arm might need a break...it's been a long and fantastic season.

EDIT:

Also, the Brewerfan.net 40man roster is off. It does not include Conti, it includes Dejean, and I can't tell if Neugebauer, Ritchie, Durocher, Quevedo, or Ford are on the 40 man roster. Also, isn't Weeks on the 40 man roster? So it's tough to tell where we stand from that.

looking at the Brewers webpage, we have a full 40 man roster, including Weeks. But they also include JM Gold, Ben Diggins, MAtt Ford, Jayson Durocher, Cody McKay, Todd Ritchie, Nick Neugebauer, and Ruben Quevedo. Gold has been removed, and the rest can be moved to the 60 day DL if they aren't already. At the same time, they don't include Jason Conti and I think they should.
