Tuesday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Indianapolis 2, Louisville (Reds) 1

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Behind another spectacular pitching performance from Luis Martinez, the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Louisville Bats for a fifth consecutive day, sweeping the home and home series with a 2-1 win at Victory Field on Tuesday night. The Bats (74-63) lead over Columbus in the International League West is down to just a half game.

Martinez, making his seventh start of the season for Indianapolis, pitched 7.0 shutout innings allowing only seven baserunners on five hits and two walks while striking out six to raise his season total to 46 whiffs in 45.2 innings (0.99 ERA). Martinez needed only 93 pitches to pick up his fourth win of the season in improving to 4-0.

With neither team having scored through the first two innings, Steve Scarborough led off the bottom half of the third for Indianapolis hitting a ball off the right-center field wall. The ball bounced past Bats centerfielder Emil Brown and back towards the infield as Scarborough raced around the bases. Brown's relay throw to shortstop Chris Clapinski and subsequent throw home was just in time to beat Scarborough in his attempt for an inside-the-park home run.

The Indians did manage to break through against Louisville starting pitcher Matt Belisle in the fourth inning as Pete Zoccolillo doubled home Rich Paz with the Tribe's first run before coming around to score on a two-out single by Cody McKay.

Belisle (2-3), acquired by the Cincinnati organization in a deal with Atlanta for Kent Mercker, pitched 7.0 innings allowing only the two runs, one of which was unearned, while striking out five.

Louisville's Michael Coleman pinch hit for Belisle with one out in the eighth inning, driving a John Foster offering high and deep over the centerfield fence for his first home run of the season, but Foster retired the next two batters in the inning before turning the game over to Shane Nance for the ninth inning.

Nance allowed a leadoff walk to Brown to open the ninth, but then got Russell Branyan to line out to Paz at second base. Paz wheeled and fired to first in time to catch Brown off the bag for a double play. Nance then caught Felipe Crespo looking at strike three to end the game. The save was Nance's third of the season.

The baserunning blunder was the second of the game for Brown as Jason Conti picked up his 21st outfield assist of the season in the top of the fourth inning when he gunned down Brown at third base on a single off the bat of Branyan. Conti is the first IL outfielder to record 21 assists in a season since Ed Ott in 1974.

The Indians (62-75) will host the Toledo Mud Hens at Victory Field for a two-game series starting on Wednesday night when lefty Nate Teut (3-5, 4.40) takes to the hill for the Indians to face Toledo's Pat Ahearne (4-5, 3.64).

High Desert 5, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 1

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Wins have been few and far-between for the High Desert Mavericks in 2003. Tuesday night, the Mavs opened up their final homestand in 2003 with a much-needed victory over the Lancaster JetHawks, winning by a score of 5-1 at Mavericks Stadium.

The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Mavs, and gives High Desert their 40th win of the year, as their overall record now stands at 40-94.

Chris Saenz continued his dominance, picking up his team-leading ninth win of the year. Saenz pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just one unearned run on the night. Saenz (9-9) was chased after issuing two walks in the seventh and only one out.

Justin Gordon came on and retired Marland Williams on a fly ball to right field. With two outs and runners at first and second, Danny Richar lined a single into right field. Ralph Santana?s throw from right field nailed Jason Gorman at the plate for the third out of the inning.

Earlier in the game, Santana threw out Travis McAndrews trying to score, keeping the JetHawks off the board.

Froilan Villanueva?s three-run homer down the left field line in the third inning put the Mavs up 3-0. Lancaster starter Cliff McMachen (6-4) pitched well, but couldn?t get out of trouble when he had to. For Villanueva, it?s his ninth homer of the year, and it gives him a team-best 68 RBIs.

McMachen allowed a two-out single to Chris Morris in the seventh inning, which knocked in Ozzie Chavez and Todd West, giving the Mavs a 5-1 lead.

Gordon never got into trouble, as he allowed just two base runners over the final 2.2 innings. He earned his fifth save of the year with the scoreless relief.

The Mavs send Danny Stout (2-1) to the hill for the first time as a starter on Wednesday night, as the Mavs look to make it two straight wins. Lancaster will counter with Mike Shultz (1-2). Game time from Mavericks Stadium is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

SECOND VERSE, SAME AS THE FIRST

Instead of playing to impress Milwaukee G.M. Doug Melvin and club President Ulice Payne, who were present tonight, the Stars' looked like a job-seeker falling asleep in front of their future bosses........ The momentum has clearly shifted for this team........ They look like a team that has lost the will to win, a club almost too depressing to watch, an engine without its steam, a team you would barely suspect is playoff-bound.

The Stars have now lost six of their last seven and seven of their last nine, hitting just .225 in their last ten games. Although they haven't needed much of a spark offensively to win games before, (they've been 8th, 9th, or 10th in hitting, but 3rd in the league in runs scored for a long while), they seem to have forgotten how to score and win........ Once excelling in lighting two-out rallies and taking advantage of mistakes, now Birmingham is ironically using that recipe against Huntsville, taking every page and every chapter out of Frankieball to eliminate the Stars........ The Barons need just a win Wednesday or Thursday to do just that.

In the first inning, they used a sacrifice and an error to set up their first two runs........ Following a one-out single by Juan Piniella, Jeremy Reed laid down a drag bunt in Chris Barnwell's direction. It was a tough play, but Barnwell's throw went wild past Brandon Gemoll, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd........ Scott Bikowski poked a 1-2 breaking ball over the head of J.J. Hardy for a 2-run single. Reed slid away from the plate, as evidenced by the drag marks on the fresh chalk, but both Kade Johnson and Frank Kremblas were overruled by the umpire.

Birmingham has even showed Huntsville the kind of eye-popping defense that the Stars have been pulling against teams all season........ With one out and Alejandro Machado on first in the bottom half of the 1st inning, Hardy hit a 1-2 pitch up the middle. 2nd baseman Danny Sandoval dove to stop the ball from going through, then flipped it from his glove to waiting shortstop Guillermo Reyes, who completed the double play.

Noochie Varner lined a ball that looked like a double or maybe triple off the wall in right field in the 2nd inning, but the ball kept carrying and hit off the 2nd row of billboards for a home run....... It would be their only run........ Jim Bullard (1-1, 1.17 in 9 appearances vs. the Stars this season) scattered the Stars' three remaining hits --- a single to left by D.J. Clark in the 2nd and singles by Hardy in the 4th and the 6th........

Tetsu Yofu was the scheduled starter for Birmingham, but he was scratched due to a sore elbow, one that Gabe Alvarez told me, would not prevent him from making his next start......... Dave Krynzel killed a potential rally in the 5th, a 31-pitch inning by Bullard, his toughest inning of the night. With runners on second and third, both of whom reached on walks, Krynzel struck out in desparation on a 1-2 pitch that was low and away. The Stars would never have a chance like that again in the game.......... Krynzel, who also struck out in the 1st, appears to have lost confidence in his game. He has fanned in 18 straight games, a club record since I've been able to record game-by-game strikeout totals starting in 1996. He has 112 Ks on the year, and has struck out 36 times in 87 ABs this month..

Pedro Liriano, who became the first Huntsville pitcher to lose 13 games in a season since Curtis Shaw in 1993, was rather effective. He did not go to a three-ball count on any Birmingham hitter until the 4th inning, and he got some defensive help as well........ Krynzel failed in a diving attempt to catch Tom Nicholson's leadoff liner to the gap in left-center in the top of the 2nd inning. Nicholson legged out a triple as the throw came in from Brad Nelson........ Nicholson was then cut down at the plate on a throw from Barnwell, after fielding Chad Durham's hot grounder off his chest, one that will leave a mark tonight........ Liriano also got out of a one-out, runners on the corners situation in the 3rd inning.........

After 84 pitches, Pedro handed the ball off to the bullpen, but after two quiet innings under Jeff Hundley, the Barons exploded for five runs in the 8th, kicked off by a two-run, bases-loaded single by Carlos Maldonado.

The Stars are now 11-14 in August and look destined for their first losing month since April of last year....... The Barons are 17-8........ Game three of this series will pit Jason Shelley (3-0, 1.96) against Birmingham right-hander Carlos Castillo (2-1, 4.91), a 28-year old veteran who has seen days with the White Sox, the Red Sox, and Japanese baseball........ He was a 3rd round draft pick of the White Sox in 1994, and signed this year on June 30 by the Sox to a contract with Birmingham..........

The Stars have two more dates in the regular season to break the 200,000 mark in attendance. They need to average 1,849 at the gate. Unless the Stars' front office can get the Ten Commandments judge and Pat Robertson to come and hold a post-game tent revival for the Bible freaks in this area, it's not likely they'll make it, but there is a Christian concert following Thursday's game, which starts at 5:05, and that will represent the Stars last chance to avoid their first sub-200K year since 1988.

Liriano is now 2-3 in August with a 5.83 ERA........ Hardy is 8-for-20 in his last five games and is hitting .310 since August 7........ Corey Hart, hitting .326 in his last 11 games, was given a rest tonight........ Machado is 2-for-19 in his last 6 games, but has 6 of his 8 stolen bases this month, in his last 10 games.

Luis Martinez won a 2-1 game for Indianapolis tonight against Louisville, his 4th win without a loss for the Indians, giving him a 12-3 mark this year, split between the Stars and Indy......... In what looked like a fantasy match-up, Derek Lee, on Monday night, won his 2nd game, beating another former Huntsville Star, Todd Van Poppel........ Dionys Cesar, who hit .282 in 60 games for the Stars in 2001, was picked up by the Chattanooga Lookouts after 2nd baseman Andrew Beattie was promoted to Louisville. The Stars regular season ends with four games against Chattanooga at Bell South Park.

It is Ok to prematurely declare the Snappers second half champs. Even if they don't beat Clinton tonight or tomorrow to clinch, they get a truly abysmal Dayton team over the weekend. I have seen the Dragons, Lookouts(AA) and the Reds(over the last two nights) and can honestly say Cincinnati is in the same boat we were in a few years ago(barely any talent at any level).

I was happy to see d money(no relation) put Crabbe back in the two hole in the lineup. It gives the lineup a little more depth with Weeks batting fifth. I would like to see these five bat in this order throughout the playoffs.
