Wednesday's Daily Menu :

We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well.

Indianapolis Media Notes for Wednesday:

TONIGHT: The Indians continue the final homestand of the season with the opening game of a two-game series with Toledo. The Tribe trails Toledo by one-half game for third place in the IL West standings. A win tonight would put the Indians in sole possession of third place for the first time since July 1. The Indians have not finished the season in fourth place since 1993.

The Indians have won five in a row for the second time this season. The first five-game streak came from June 20-24 against Pawtucket and Scranton. The last time the Tribe won six straight was last Aug. 14-20 when they won seven consecutive games.

The Indians and Mud Hens have split 12 meetings this season including six at Victory Field. The Tribe won two of three the last times the teams met - Aug. 18 and 19.

On Aug. 18, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals. The Tribe is 7-3 in this stretch, and 18-24 against division foes overall this season.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 16-14 in that stretch, including an 11-7 mark at Victory Field.

YESTERDAY: The Tribe defeated Louisville 2-1 for their fifth straight win. All five wins came against the first-place Bats. Luis Martinez worked seven shutout innings to lower his ERA to 0.99. He struck out six while allowing five hits and two walks. Pete Zoccolillo doubled in a run and scored in the fourth to account for both Tribe runs. Shane Nance earned his second save in as many days.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut makes his 18th trip to the mound tonight. It will be his 13th start. Teut is coming off a 1-0 shutout of Louisville on Aug. 22. He worked seven innings in that contest allowing four hits and one walk while fanning a season-high seven. This will be Teut's first time facing Toledo this season.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks seventh in the IL with a .309 average.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Rich Paz has a season-long, nine-game hitting streak. Over the streak, Paz is hitting (.543, 19-for-35). Since joining the Tribe on July 25, Paz has reached base safely in 29 of 31 games (.432 OBP).

Ryan Knox had a season-long, seven-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday. He hit .367 (11-for-30) on his streak. Knox leads the team with 14 steals despite playing in just 31 games.

Jim Rushford has hit safely in 26 of 31 games since July 27 (.295, 36-for-122).

Alex Delgado has hit safely in 13 of 17 games since July 26 (.364, 20-for-55).

THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti leads the IL with 21 outfield assists. Conti is one of only five IL outfielders to record 21 or more assists since 1970. The last IL outfielder with 21 assists was Ed Ott (Charleston) in 1974. The others with 21 or more were: Richard Miller (21-Louisville-1971), Rodney Gaspar (23-Tidewater-1970) and Ben Oglivie (26-Louisville-1971). When the Indians were in the American Association, Buffalo's William Pennyfeather had 21 assists in 1993. Conti had three assists in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 15. He also has one assist with Milwaukee this season.

MORE FIELDING PROWESS: Steve Scarborough leads IL shortstops with a .966 fielding percentage. In 437 chances, Scarborough has committed just 15 errors.

Alex Delgado ranks third among IL catchers having thrown out 51.7% of would-be basestealers.

NANCE'S NUMBERS: In 28 appearances since May 23, LHP Shane Nance has allowed one run in 42.0 innings. In that period he has allowed just 22 hits and eight walks while striking out 42. Nance threw 34.2 scoreless innings, the longest streak in the minors this season, from May 16 through Aug. 18.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Thursday vs. Toledo - RHP Seth Greisinger (5-9, 4.22) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (10-8, 4.91)

Friday vs. Columbus - TBA vs. RHP Ben Ford (5-3, 2.73)

Saturday vs. Columbus - TBA vs. LHP Derek Lee (2-4, 4.08)

Other than Prince Fielder, no other Beloit player earned Midwest League honors. The Tigers' Jon Connolly had a tremendous season and must have eked past Manny Parra for LHP honors:

No Indianapolis Indians among the International league All-Stars:

No Arizona Brewers, either; SS Gilberto Acosta seemed a sure thing, but the league's MVP is also a shortstop...

The Southern and California Leagues have yet to announce their squads.

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Steve Scarborough's single down the third base line past a diving Brant Ust scored Doug Jennings with the winning run as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 4-3 on Wednesday night at Victory Field. Scarborough's single capped off a three-run ninth inning rally for the Indians, as the Tribe came back from a 3-0 deficit after six innings to pick up the victory.

The Indians (63-75), winners of a season-high six in a row, moved past the Hens (63-76) into third place in the International League West.

The Tribe scored all three runs in the ninth without making an out. Jason Conti started the frame off with a single to left field against Mud Hens reliever Erik Eckenstahler. Conti moved to second on a single to right off the bat of Wilton Veras, before Eckenstahler (3-6) loaded the bases by walking Jennings, who was attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt.

Toledo then turned to righthander Troy Pearson to pitch out of the bases-loaded, no out jam. Alex Delgado was the first to face Pearson, and grounded sharply to Ust at third base. After fielding the grounder cleanly, Ust's throw to home was wide of the mark, skipping past A.J. Hinch to the backstop. Both Conti and pinch runner Ryan Knox scored on the play as Jennings moved into third base representing the winning run while there were still no outs in the inning. That set up Scarborough's hard-hit grounder just inside the bag and past the outstretched glove of Ust allowing Jennings to score easily from third base.

The late-inning heroics shattered an otherwise outstanding pitching performance by Toledo starter Pat Ahearne. Ahearne lasted into the eighth inning, pitching 7.2 innings while allowing eight hits and only one unearned run in the ballgame.

Toledo scored all three of its runs off of Indians starter Nate Teut, who gave up the three runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. Toledo struck first in the top of the fourth when Teut struggled with wildness in hitting Hinch with a pitch while walking two other batters, including Ust with the bases loaded. Gene Kingsale added a two-out single following the walk to Ust that put the Mud Hens on top 2-0 after four.

Patrick Lennon made it 3-0 in the top of the sixth when his leadoff blast landed in the pine trees in dead centerfield.

The Indians scored their first run in the seventh when one of three errors committed by Hens shortstop Omar Infante allowed Veras to score on a fielder's choice groundout by Delgado. The Mud Hens committed four errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs, all of which proved to be the difference in the ballgame.

Jason Childers ( 5-4) picked up the win for the Tribe by turning in a perfect top of the ninth in his first game back since being struck on the hand with a line drive last Saturday at Louisville.

The Indians and Mud Hens will conclude the brief two-game series on Thursday evening at Victory Field when the Tribe sends Pasqual Coco (10-8, 4.91) to the mound to face Seth Greisinger (5-9, 4.22) and Toledo.

Needed some sleep, so no update on starsboxscore.com tonight. Sorry.

The Stars had the bases loaded w/nobody out in the bottom of the 9th, down 6-2 on a pair of singles and a walk to Mike Kremblas, but Alejandro Machado (batting .197 in his last 10 games) struck out, Dave Krynzel (4-for-41 slump) struck out on a 2-2 pitch, and J.J. Hardy popped out to right. Krynzel left 6 men on base tonight while going 0-for-5. Birmingham wins the 2nd half title in the West and games 3, 4, and 5 of the playoffs, the latter two if necessary, of course.

The Stars have now lost 8 of their last 10 and have scored an average of just a little better than 3 runs a game in their last 10 games. Outscored by Birmingham, 20-4. Looks bleak, I know, but the 2001 Stars, who went on to win the Western Division Title over Birmingham, lost 7 of their last 9 in the regular season and were swamped in the regular season series by the Barons. The 1985 Stars, who would win the SL Championship, lost their last 7 games and the first game of the playoffs. So all may not be lost. We'll see.

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 8, High Desert 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? Despite an 8-3 loss to the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium, High Desert Mavericks? fans had plenty of reasons to cheer in the ninth inning.

Scott Candelaria and Johnny Raburn became the first teammates in California League history to play all nine positions over the course of a nine-inning game. Howie Clark is the only other Mavericks player to play all nine positions in one game. Clark did it on September 2nd, 1995, under Manager Tim Blackwell, now the current Mavs skipper.

Candelaria started the ninth inning by getting Jay Garthwaite to pop up to Raburn at second base. After allowing a single to Edgar Varela, Candelaria was removed from the game and was replaced on the hill by Raburn. Raburn walked Mike Thiessen and then got Travis McAndrews to hit a ground ball to first, Ozzie Chavez misplayed the throw from first base, loading the bases with one out for Joe Wilkins. Raburn struck out Wilkins looking and then got Marland Williams to hit into an inning-ending fielder?s choice, ending a scoreless ninth.

The JetHawks broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the fourth inning. Mavs starter Danny Stout (2-2) allowed an RBI double to Mike Thiessen and a two-run triple to Marland Williams, giving the JetHawks a 4-1 lead. Aaron Dean came on and allowed an RBI single to Danny Richar, making it 5-1. Richar eventually scored on an RBI hit by Kyle Nichols, giving him a league-leading 103. Dean allowed two more runs in the fifth, making it 8-1.

The Mavs tied the game at 1-1 in the third, as Froilan Villanueva picked up his team-leading 69th RBI with a ground out. High Desert got their other two runs in the eighth, as Todd West?s ground ball knocked in Jeremy Frost and Chris Morris? single plated John Toner.

Pete Sikaras didn?t get a save, but worked a scoreless ninth to make a winner out of JetHawks starter Mike Schultz (2-2).

The Mavs try to take two of three from the JetHawks, sending Dan Hall (6-13) to the mound for the final time in 2003 on Thursday night. The JetHawks will answer with John Castellanos (6-3). Game time from Mavericks Stadium is 7:05 (9:05 Central).

High Desert Box Score:

Amazingly, Chavez' error was the only one in the game; it took ccoperation and flexibility from other players as well to move Raburn and Candelaria around; the fact that the Lancaster ninth inning was scoreless was sweet -- the feat was completed without making a mockery of the game...

Raburn looks like he will be a solid utility player, but not much more.

I hope you mean a solid minor league utility player, because he's a 165 pound 24 year old with no position who's slugging .323 in A ball. I doubt you'll ever see him in Milwaukee or any other Major League city. His speed could get him a roster spot, but that's about it.

Don Money had an interesting lineup last night. No Crabbe, Eure at 1B, and Prince at DH. Maybe they're wanted to give Prince a semi-night off. He really looks like he's pressing, hacking at almost everything. He walked on four pitches in the 1st but they were clearly pitching around him

VandenBerg left 5 men on base with 2 outs in his first 2 ABs but got the big hit with the bases loaded and 2 outs for the go ahead runs.

Another nice victory last night, and to make things a whole lot better, my dad won $263 in the 50/50 drawing.

Mike, that is the way d money(no relation) has "rested" Prince throughout the year. Obviously, you always want Prince's bat in the lineup as much as possible. I hope he takes the weekend in Dayton and gives Prince, Gwynn and Bibbs all an entire(no fielding or DH) day off, perhaps on a rotating basis or all on the very last day to rest for the playoffs and the 8 hour journey home. All of the other players have been sufficiently rested.
