Decent effort by Ben Hendrickson absolutely spoiled by the flat Huntsville offense. Kremblas better be lighting a fire under them for the playoffs, or it's going to be a very short post-season.

Beloit 10, Dayton (Reds) 6

Beloit Game Summary from the Dayton Site:

Beloit, Mother Nature Wash Out Dragons 10-6

Dayton, OH - The Beloit Snappers (74-59, 42-24) continued their dominance this season over the Dayton Dragons (59-76, 24-42) Friday night as they ran their record to a perfect 5-0 with a 10-6 victory in a rain-shortened game in front of 8,406 fans at Fifth Third Field. The game was called with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as lightning filled the sky.

Midwest League Prospect of the year Prince Fielder tripled to start the top of the second inning and scored the games first run on a groundout from Travis Hinton to give Beloit a 1-0 lead.

It was more Beloit in the third inning as they scored four runs to balloon the lead to 5-0 and knock Dragon starting pitcher Josh Thigpen (L, 3-9) out of the game. Kennard Bibbs singled to lead off the inning. Back-to-back one out walks to Tony Gwynn Jr. and Fielder loaded the bases. Rickie Weeks delivered a two run double scoring Bibbs and Gwynn. Hinton scored Fielder with a fielder?s choice to make the score 4-0 Beloit. Weeks moved to third on the play and scored on a balk from Thigpen. Thigpen lasted 3.0 innings allowed five runs, all earned on three hits to take the loss. He struck out two and walked five.

The Snappers struck for three more runs in the top of the fifth. Weeks doubled Fielder to third, who led off the inning with a walk. With runners on second and third Hinton singled home Fielder and Weeks. Adam Heether followed with a single. Hinton was thrown out trying to score on the play. With two out Chas Terni scored Heether to put Beloit in front 8-0.

The Dragons finally scored off Khallid Ballouli (W, 5-4) in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Many Paula was hit by a pitch. Hector Mateo then singled. Jarrod Schmidt followed with a single of his own scoring Paula. Kevin Howard then drove home Mateo with a groundout cutting the lead to 8-2 Beloit. Ballouli picked up the win tossing 6.0 innings of five-hit baseball. He allowed two runs and struck out seven, walking three.

Beloit scored two more times in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 10-2. Heether and Pedro Esparragoza walked to start the frame. Terni singled home Heether and Esparragoza crossed home on a double play ball to finish the scoring for Beloit.

In the eighth Ryan Hanigan lead off with a single and scored on a two-run colossal homerun, the third of the year from Travis Wong. Dayton pulled to within 10-4 with the two run inning.

Dayton threatened in the ninth inning before lightning put a stop to things. Ryan Fry walked with one out in the ninth. He moved to second on a base hit from Hanigan. Wong drove both home with a double. It would then be 10-6 Beloit. After a strikeout Tiago Campos had a two-ball one-strike count the umpires ordered the tarp on the field as rain and lightning filled the air. There would be a forty-five minute delay before the game was called.

The Dragons will continue the four game series against the Snappers Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 Central. Newstalk 1290 WHIO will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 5:30 PM. RHP Thomas Pauly will make the start for Dayton while Beloit will start RHP Jason Baker.

Columbus (Yankees) 5, Indianapolis 4

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Columbus Clippers picked up a 5-4 win in the first of a two-game set with the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field on Friday evening. For the Tribe, the loss marks the second straight night that the team out-hit the opponent, yet failed to win the game.

Mike Thurman earned the victory for Columbus (75-66) as the Clippers kept pace with the division-leading Louisville Bats. Thurman gave up nine hits in 6.0 innings, but picked up the win by getting the Indians to strand six runners on base during that span.

Curtis Pride put the Clippers in front 3-1 in the top of the third inning when his three-run blast to deep center field off Indians starter Ben Ford brought home Erick Almonte and Marcus Jensen.

Leading 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning, Columbus plated two more runs on a double off the bat of third baseman Drew Henson. Henson's double was the third straight hit in the inning off Ford (5-4), all of which came with two outs.

Despite outhitting the Clippers 12-8, the Indians managed only single runs in the first and fourth innings, and two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Knox scored the first Indians run of the game in the bottom of the first when he led off the frame with a single. Knox then stole second base, advanced to third on Rich Paz's bunt single, and scored on Pete Zoccolillo's RBI single.

Doug Jennings closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth when he drove a Thurman pitch deep to right field for his fifth home run of the season, and first since July 19th.

The Tribe's final two runs came in the bottom of the seventh when Zoccolillo's fourth hit of the ballgame was a two-run blast to right field off Columbus reliever Bret Prinz. Zoccolillo finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBI.

Sam Marsonek pitched the final 1.1 innings for Columbus to pick up his 18th save of the season.

The Indians and Clippers will conclude the two-game series on Saturday night, as the Indians play their final home game of the 2003 season. Derek Lee (2-4, 4.08) will take the mound for the Indians.

ADELANTO, CA - The High Desert Mavericks opened up their final series of 2003 with a big win over the Lake Elsinore Storm, winning 7-5 on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

Two batters later, Ben Johnson followed with another solo shot, making it 4-2. Mike Richardson singled and advanced to third on an error, later scoring on an RBI groundout by Nick Trzesniak.

Missoula (Diamondbacks) 6, Helena 4

RHP Judd Richardson injured by a batted ball early on; some of the Helena kids who had been hot earlier have been slumping as of late...

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

www.helenair.com/articles...003_03.txt

Additional Details from the Helena Site Game Summary:

Missoula jumped out to a five run lead, and the Brewers rally fell just short as the Osprey beat the Brewers 6-4 in Helena Friday night. The Missoula victory along with a Great Falls loss causes a log jam atop the Northern Division with Great Falls, Missoula, and Helena all tied.

Manny Ramirez continued to destroy Pioneer League pitching, going two-for-four with a three run shot in the sixth. Terry Trofholz stole his 34th base of the year, tieing Darryl Hamilton for Helena's all-time single season mark.

Judd Richardson started for the Brewers but lasted just one-third inning after taking a liner in the elbow from Carlos Gonzalez, the second batter of the game. Unfortunatly Gonzalaz scored and Richardson picked up his first loss of the season. Brian Montalbo pitched five innings of relief allowing three runs. Rickey Stover pitched the ninth without allowing a run.

Helena and Missoula play game two of the series Saturday Night in Helena.

Arizona Brewers 15, Arizona Angels 4

Arizona Box Score:

Hey, how about 18-year-old RHP Tommy Hawk, your Arizona League ERA leader with a 2.31 mark in 47 IP! The team's ERA is 5.33. As of today, it takes 44 IP to qualify for the ERA title, hopefully that does not change after today's finale. Four doubles and five triples for the Maryvale kids -- those outfield power alleys must be something at the Angels' complex; the box score indicates "N Bates", but that's OF Dallas Bates for the Crew...

By the Snappers pitching Baker today, they have evidently decided to go with him as their third pitcher in the playoffs behind Sarfate and Ballouli. Who would have imagined just a few weeks ago?? This is obviously important to note as their first two rounds are only 3 game series.

How did Prince get a triple? I didn't even know he had ONE previously. He normally doesn't run hard enough out of the box to complete such a feat.

He is just a stolen base machine. It has been my contention for some time that he would make a good fifth outfielder on a major league team. He doesn't do anything well enough to warrant daily action. However, he does a lot of "SMALL" things that contribute to wins. He bunts exceptionally well, steals bases and will run through a wall to catch a fly ball. I see him as a late inning situational player and occasional starter to rest somebody. Thoughts??

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

COREY HART - MVP

Forgetting the present, Southern League managers, radio broadcasters, and media reporters, have remembered the past....... Frank Kremblas was voted the Southern League Manager-of-the-Year and Corey [/b] beat a strong field of candidates to win the Southern League MVP award for 2003....... Corey becomes the 4th Huntsville Star in club history to win the award and Kremblas, the 3rd manager following Jeff Newman in 1989 and Gary Jones in 1994......... Another former Star, Webster Garrison (Stars 1991, '92, '96, '98) won the Midwest League honor of Manager-of-the-Year.

But the change of scenery isn't helping the Stars, caught in a whirlpool of defeat........ Despite a record of 9-2 this season at Bell South Park, the Stars lost their 5th straight game and 9th of their last 10, against a pitcher who came in with an 8.10 ERA....... Instead of picking him apart, Daylan Childress scattered four hits and struck out eight en route to eight innings of shutout ball......... On the other hand, the Stars are facing a team that's hot. The Lookouts have now won 8 of their last 9....... The worst part is that this team that was for the major part of the second half, on the bottom of the standings, has now tied the Stars for 2nd place, and no doubt, would like to win some kind of victory in finishing 2nd all by themselves.

The Lookouts scored in the 1st on an RBI hit by Dionys Cesar, a former Huntsville Star, who did well for us in 2001, hitting .282 after joining the Stars in early May. Eventually, he was promoted to Indianapolis on July 15 after 60 games....... Cesar's single through the right side, scored Wilmy Caceres --- his 7th RBI in just nine games with Chattanooga........ Corey Hart's 9th error of the month (more than he made in June and July, combined, and more than either April or May), set up the Lookouts' 2nd run in the 6th inning....... It was on a misplayed ball off the bat of Edwin Encarnacion, a 2003 Futures All-Star, on a 2-0 pitch........ Dionys Cesar moved him to second with a single up the middle........ Jesse Gutierrez then hit a two-out line drive single to left, scoring Gutierrez who slid under the tag on a good throw from Brad Nelson........

Chris Barnwell had a ball kick off his glove in the 3rd inning, but the Lookouts never capitalized on the miscue. Barny, when playing second, will sometimes sit back on a ground ball, something he doesn't do when playing short or third, and he gets a bad hop that way.

The Stars had some sterling defense from Brandon Gemoll who made two difficult scoops during the game which held the Lookouts with runners on base....... Two runners reached scoring position in the Lookouts' 6th on doubles by Alejandro Diaz and Brian Anderson, but Diaz was picked off by Ben Hendrickson, his 2nd pickoff of the night......... J.J. Hardy also, as usual, was making some shining plays at short, showing why he belongs on the league All-Star team, and why he'll be a major league star someday.........

There was little offensive threat, however. The Stars didn't get their first hit until the 5th inning when Noochie Varner singled and took second on an fielding error by Alejandro Diaz, but nothing came of it. Mike Kremblas and Daryl Clark both struck out. Clark's bat on his second swing landed in the seats on the 14th row on the 1st base side, but everyone was all right........

Barnwell walked in the 1st, but was erased on a stolen base attempt. It was only the 3rd time this season that Barny has led off in the batting order this year........ The Stars had their best opportunity in the 6th, as Childress faced his toughest jam........ Hendrickson led off with a hit up the middle. Then with one out, Nelson doubled down the left field line, sending Ben to third, but Childress fanned Hardy with a high fastball and retired Hart on a foul pop to first.

Mike Jones was officially placed on the disabled list, Friday, so the Stars could place pitcher Chris Saenz on the roster.......... Greg Bruso will make his 2nd appearance for the Stars, Saturday night against Josh Hall (8-9, 3.26), who earlier this season made a start for the Reds against the Giants and gave up a home run to Barry Bonds.
