Quite a bit of news in the Indianapolis Media Notes for Saturday:

TONIGHT: The Indians meet Columbus in the final home game of the 2003 season. With a win tonight, the Indians will finish the season with a winning record on their last three homestands. The Tribe will finish the season with a sub .500 mark at home overall though. The Indians have a 297-232 (.561) regular-season record at Victory Field since moving in on July 11, 1996. Last year was the first time the Tribe did not finish above .500 at home (34-38).

The Indians are just 5-10 against the Clippers, and have dropped the last five meetings between the two clubs. The Tribe has managed to go 3-4 against them at Victory Field. This will be the first time the Indians have lost the season series to Columbus since 1999. Fernando Seguignol is hitting .429-8-21 in 15 games against the Tribe.

On Aug. 18, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals to close out the year. The Tribe is 8-5 in this stretch, and 19-26 against division foes overall this season.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 17-16 in that stretch, including a 12-9 mark at Victory Field.

YESTERDAY: Columbus held on to defeat the Indians 5-4. Curtis Pride had a three-run homer for the Clippers. Pete Zoccolillo led the Tribe with four hits and three RBI. He belted his 12th home run of the season. Doug Jennings added three hits and a home run.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Derek Lee makes his eighth start and 14th appearance. Lee is 2-3 with a 3.14 ERA as a starter. He is 1-2 with a 2.73 ERA in six games (three starts) in August striking out 25 in 26.1 innings while walking just six. Lee is coming off a win in his last start on Aug. 25 against Louisville. He held the Bats to two runs in 7.2 innings. Lee has worked 7.2 and 8.0 innings in his last two starts. He has not faced Columbus this season.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Pete Zoccolillo has been named the Indians Most Valuable Player, and will receive a championship-style diamond ring prior to tonight's game. He leads the team with 130 games, 120 hits, 34 doubles, 72 RBI and 51 walks while hitting .277. See the separate press release for more details.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Jason Childers has been named the Indians Player of the Month for August after going 3-0 with four saves and a 0.00 ERA. He has a win or save in half of the Tribe's 14 victories this month, and has allowed just five hits in 11.2 innings. He will receive a commemorative watch before tonight's game.

AWARDS NIGHT: The Indians will honor five other players tonight as well as presenting two employee awards and rewarding five charities with $9,000. The $100 player awards are:

Jason Childers - Henry Smock Award as the top relief pitcher (in memory of a longtime Indians season ticket holder)

Jim Rushford - Highest Batting Average

Shane Nance - Lowest ERA

Jason Conti - Top Defensive Player

Keith Luuloa - Versatility Award

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fifth in the IL with a .311 average.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Steve Scarborough has a seven-game hitting streak. He has four multi-hit games on the streak (.458, 11-for-24), and has raised his average to a season-high .240.

FIELDING PROWESS: Steve Scarborough leads IL shortstops with a .964 fielding percentage. In 450 chances, Scarborough has committed just 16 errors.

NANCE'S NUMBERS: In 28 appearances since May 23, LHP Shane Nance has allowed one run in 42.0 innings. In that period he has allowed just 22 hits and eight walks while striking out 42. Nance threw 34.2 scoreless innings, the longest streak in the minors this season, from May 16 through Aug. 18.

UPCOMING PROBABLES:

Sunday at Toledo - LHP Luis Martinez (4-0, 0.99) vs. RHP John Ennis (2-11, 5.68)

Monday at Toledo - LHP Nate Teut (3-5, 4.41) vs. RHP Pat Ahearne (4-5, 3.36)

Shane Nance really needs to transfer all this AAA domination to his Milwaukee uniform; thanks for the memories, Derek Lee! Free agents Rich Paz, Keith Luuloa, and Alex Delgado would probably all be welcomed back, but would they choose to return?

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cody McKay drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 12th inning Saturday night as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Clippers 3-2 at Victory Field in front of the fourth-largest crowd in the ballpark's history, 16,068. The ballgame was the final contest of the season for the Tribe at Victory Field, and ended Columbus' chances for a division title.

It was the second time this season that the Indians defeated the Columbus Clippers by drawing a walk-off walk against Adkins to force the winning run home. On July 22nd, Pete Zoccolillo looked at ball four to allow Jim Rushford to score from second base in the bottom of the ninth inning at Victory Field.

Saturday, Zoccolillo led off the bottom of the 12th with a double to left. Keith Luuloa was then intentionally walked by Adkins before Doug Jennings flew out to center. Wilton Veras then drew a walk to load the bases for McKay, who walked on four pitches as Adkins dropped to 3-3 on the year.

With the score tied at 1-1, Matt Childers came on as the third Indians pitcher of the evening in the top of the 10th inning, giving up a one-out solo home run to John Rodriguez as the Clippers took a 2-1 lead. The run was the first earned run of Childers' Triple-A career, as the righthander had pitched 16.1 innings this season and 5.0 last season without allowing an earned run.

The Indians stormed back to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th when Luuloa singled to center with two outs and came around to score one batter later on Jennings' RBI double to right. Jennings' blast hit the top of the wall in right, narrowly missing leaving the yard for a game-winning homer.

Childers blanked the Clippers in the 11th and 12th innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.

Luuloa singled home Rich Paz in the bottom of the fifth inning for the first run of the game, putting the Tribe ahead 1-0. Luuloa, was 3-for-3 in the game with a run scored, an RBI, and three walks.

Columbus notched a run in the top of the seventh inning when Tribe starter Derek Lee threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded and no outs in the inning to allow Bobby Smith to score from third. Lee then struck out Drew Henson and Michel Hernandez before getting Rodriguez to ground out weakly to first base to get out of the jam. Lee pitched 7.0 innings allowing four hits and the one run while striking out four.

The Indians travel to Toledo on Sunday and Monday for the final two games of the season. Luis Martinez (4-0, 0.99) will bring his electric stuff to the mound on Sunday to face Toledo's John Ennis (5-11, 5.68).

Arizona Box Score:

10-inning victory; nice clean win based on fine pitching throughout; fittingly, SS Gilberto Acosta drives in both Brewer runs -- he'd have to be considered team MVP; among Acosta's fine overall numbers (.865 OPS coming into today's finale), he also stole 30 bases in 33 attempts, easily leading the league -- he'll be 21 years old in October; Helena SS Augustin Septimo won't be 20 until next May and has struggled some, so Acosta could be Beloit's starting SS in 2004...

Beloit Game Summary from the Dayton Site:

Dayton, OH - It took the Dayton Dragons (25-42, 60-77) six tries, but they finally knocked off the Beloit Snappers (42-25, 75-59) 8-0, Saturday night at Fifth Third Field. With the win the Dragons are 1-5 this season against Beloit.

Hector Mateo sparked the Dragons in the first inning with a leadoff single. He then stole second base and scored on a RBI single from Kevin Howard. Dayton took the 1-0 lead, and that would be more than enough run support for Dragon starting pitcher Thomas Pauly (W, 2-5). Pauly picked up the win allowing just two hits in 5.0 innings. He didn?t walk any and struck out five.

Dayton scored three more times in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Many Paula reached on a fielder?s choice in front of Mateo. Jarrod Schmidt then walked to load the bases. Paula scored on a wild pitch by Jason Baker (L, 5-4). Howard then delivered again with another single scoring Mateo and Schmidt to put Dayton in front 4-0. Baker lasted just 4.0 innings allowing eight runs on ten hits. He walked one and struck out five taking the loss.

The finishing touch came in the fourth inning when the Dragons scored four more runs to cap the scoring giving Dayton the 8-0 lead, and the win. Tiago Campos singled leading off the fourth inning. He moved up to second on a groundout. Schmidt drove home Campos with a single. Howard followed with his third single of the game. Ryan Fry then blasted a three run homerun scoring both Schmidt and Howard.

Kyle Edens (S, 1) finished off the Snappers picking up his first save of the season. Edens went the final 4.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked one in the contest.

The Dragons will continue the four game series against the Snappers Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 1:30 pm. RHP Kyle Lucas will make the start for Dayton while Beloit will start RHP Calvin Carpenter.

Final: Helena 5, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 4

The Osprey went up 4-3 in the eighth, but the Brewers rally for two in the ninth to win it. Worth listening to just to hear the Missoula announcer rail on "the two worst umpires in the league".

Great Falls is losing as of post time, so the Brewers should be alone in first place Sunday morning.

The Helena Independent Record will fill us in then...

Final: Lake Elsinore (Padres) 14, High Desert 1

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks suffered one of their worst losses of the season, as the Lake Elsinore Storm won convincingly in front of a sell-out crowd on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium. The Storm wrapped up a playoff berth with a 14-1 victory in the second game of the four-game series.

Ben Johnson led the way for the Storm, blasting two long home runs and collecting five RBIs on the night. Cal League MVP Josh Barfield had two hits, including a mammoth home run, his 16th of the year.

Mike Thompson (10-11) of the Storm picked up the win with six innings of shutout ball. The Mavs broke up the shutout in the ninth on an RBI single by Ozzie Chavez, finally giving the Mavs fans a chance to cheer.

The Storm jumped on Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-10) in the first and scored in all five innings against the left-hander. Leading 2-0 in the third, Lake Elsinore?s Michael Johnson picked up an RBI single, making it 3-0. Petty hit Josh Carter with the bases loaded to force in another run, making it 4-0. They put the game out of reach with two bombs off Petty in the fifth, one by Johnson and one by Barfield, for a 9-0 lead.

After Aaron Dean pitched a scoreless sixth, Nick Trzesniak homered to left field in the seventh for an 11-0 advantage. Johnson homered for the second time in the game in the eighth, a three-run blast to round out the scoring for the Storm.

Huntsville's site is down, so we turn to David Weiser for game details...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

SO LONG TO THE MONKEY

This looked more like the team that won the 1st half championship....... "The first inning was the key," said manager Frank Kremblas. "That's more two-out hits then we've had in a long time."

Ballplayers are a superstitious lot........ The scene in which Cerrano's "bats needing hats" in the movie, "Major League" isn't far from the truth. Minnie Minoso once showered with his clothes on during a slump "to remove the evil spirits." (It worked and the next day, eight of his teammates did the same.)........ Some won't cross the chalkline after the third out and I'm sure some players on the Huntsville Stars have some superstitions........ In desperation, they tried one tonight.

The entire lineup swung the same stick, a 33-inch model with a medium barrel, to score as many runs in the first inning as they had in their last five games........ They used it until pitcher Greg Bruso broke it in the top of the 5th inning....... Eleven men came to the plate in the 1st off Josh Hall, and no less than six two-out hits keyed the outburst, putting to rest another evil spell.

The rally started with Noochie Varner's one-out infield single off the pitcher, Josh Hall. One out later, Corey Hart singled him to second....... Then the two-out monkey jumped ship........

Brandon Gemoll singled a 2-1 pitch to right to drive in a run. For the first time in six games, the Stars had the lead in a game........ Brad Nelson, 2-for his last-16, then ripped an RBI single into center field. Daryl Clark, with runners on first and second, singled to the right side as Gemoll scored. Then Kade Johnson, with runners on first and second, launched a two-run double off the wall in left-center. That made it 5-0, tying the largest 1st inning the Stars had this season....... Bruso then stroked his first hit in professional ball and even Alejandro Machado, who is still fighting off a 3-for-34 monkey, had his pop-up dropped by Jeff Bannon in shallow left field, scoring Johnson for the final run of the inning........ The six-run 1st was the Stars' largest opening frame of the season........ Josh Hall's troubles against the Stars this season continued to the bitter end. The Reds' # 9 prospect in their organization finishes 0-3 against the Stars in six appearances with a 6.48 ERA.

Bruso had his first RBI in the 3rd inning to make it 7-0....... Hart hit a rocket into right-center, a stand-up double in the 6th inning to drive in J.J. Hardy for the Stars' final run....... The Lookouts scored late, but too little, and were no threat. The Stars' outstanding defense turned three double plays to help keep the Lookouts from getting serious.........

The Lookouts come back on Sunday evening with Ryan Mottl (6-5, 3.80). Pedro Liriano will try to become the Stars' 2nd 10-game winner of the season and avoid his 14th loss, the most since Curtis Shaw lost 16 in 1993........ Chris Saenz arrived to join the Stars Saturday afternoon, and is scheduled to start the final game of the regular season for the Stars on Monday, an afternoon start.

Pick up a copy of the latest issue of Baseball America, Stars fans...... You'll find a shot of Joe Davis Stadium in the background and J.J. Hardy, Mike Jones, and Brad Nelson on the cover........ On the inside, in the Double-A report, is a feature article on Hardy........

The truth comes out on Dave Krynzel's knee. He didn't injure it in the final game of the Birmingham series. It was actually in the batting cage before that game, when he felt something in the back of his knee. No word yet if he'll be available for the playoffs. Krynzel says its just some tightness........

The Stars are now back at .500. The last time the Stars were under .500, was on April 14th, when they were 5-6........ The Stars are now 12-17 in August. Their worst August in their history was in 1999, when they went 13-23 (that includes September)........

Derek Lee is holding International League hitters to a .245 average. Saturday, he had another fine game, throwing seven innings and giving up just four hits to Columbus and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the 7th inning, allowing just one run. The Indians won in 12 innings, 3-2....... Richard Paz had three hits, raising his batting average since he joined Indy to .344. Pete Zoccolillo and Keith Luuloa, a pair of last year's Stars, also had three hits.........

The Reds promoted a pair of players from the Gulf Coast League to Chattanooga before this series began. One of them, center fielder Kenny Lewis can really fly and I expect to hear more of him in years to come......... Jeff Deardorff, who hit .254 and led the Stars with 19 HRs and 61 RBIs last year, is hitting .314 for the Twins' AA affiliate, the New Britain Rock Cats, 9th best in the Eastern League right now. He's also 4th among EL slugging leaders.
