Dayton (Reds) 8, Beloit 2

Beloit Game Summary from the Dayton Site:

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (26-42, 61-77) spotted the Beloit Snappers (42-26, 74-61) two early runs, before roaring back to score eight unanswered to beat the Midwest League second half Western Division champs 8-2, in front of an overflow sellout crowd of 8,898 at Fifth Third Field Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Lucas (W, 3-9) ran into some third inning trouble allowing two earned runs to the Snappers as the Dragons fell behind 2-0. A Lucas walk to Keith Bohanan with one down and a single by Callix Crabbe put runners on first and third for Adam Heether. Heether?s slow roller up the third line scored Bohanan and moved Crabbe to second for Tony Gwynn Jr. Gwynn Jr. laced a single into right center that scored Crabbe and the Snappers led 2-0.

That would be all Lucas would allow on the day as the right hander tossed a season high 7.2 innings of five-hit baseball, striking out seven and walking just one. Matt Mc Williams came in to get the final out in the eighth inning and blanked Beloit in the ninth to close the game out for Dayton.

The Dragons bats came alive in the bottom of the third as Dayton took the lead for good, just one half-inning after Beloit grabbed the advantage. Back-to-back one-out walks by starting pitcher Cal Carpenter (L, 3-6) was the beginning of a Dayton rally. With two down and first and second, Ryan Hanigan got the Dragons on the board with a RBI single scoring Jarrod Schmidt. Bohanan made a costly error at shortstop, allowing Travis Wong to reach and load the bases for Matt Boone. Boone picked up two of his three RBI on the afternoon with a single to right that put the Dragons ahead for good at 3-2.

The Dragons continued to knock around Carpenter, who had limited control at best, in the fifth. Dayton scored two runs with out the benefit of a base hit on two walks, a hit baseman, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Tiago Campos to take a 5-2 lead. In 4.0 innings of work, Carpenter allowed four hits, with one strike out, but walked five, hit a batter and tossed a wild pitch.

Another pair of runs scored in the seventh inning, off Forrest Martin, on Boone?s RBI ground out and a double by Campos. Hanigan and Wong led off the inning with back-to-back singles and came home before the second out of the inning was made to put Dayton in front 7-2.

Dayton picked up one more run off Martin in the eighth on Ryan Fry?s RBI single that scored Schmidt, who was drilled by a pitch to lead off the inning for the Dragons. Fry?s 42nd run batted in on the season closed out the scoring at 8-2.

The Dragons will wrap up the four game series against the Snappers and the 2003 regular season Monday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM (1:00 PM Central). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 1:30 pm. Time Warner Television will also carry the game live on Channel 25 in Dayton and surrounding areas. RHP Gorky Batista will make the start for Dayton while Beloit will start LHP Eric Henderson.

Indyindians.com Game Notes:

THIS WEEKEND: The Indians head to Toledo to battle the Mud Hens for the final two games of the season. The Indians are one-half game ahead of Toledo in the IL West standings for third place. One win by the Tribe will give them a third-place finish for the third straight season. If the Tribe is swept and finishes in fourth place, it will be their first fourth-place finish since 1993.

The Indians and Hens have split the 14 previous contests this season including the six played at Fifth Third Field. The teams split two games at Victory Field on Aug. 27 and 28.

On Aug. 18, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals to close out the year. The Tribe is 9-5 in this stretch, and 20-26 against division foes overall this season.

THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe played 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians went 18-16 in that stretch, including a 13-9 mark at Victory Field.

SATURDAY: The fourth-largest crowd in Victory Field history, 16,068, turned out to see the Indians beat Columbus 3-2 in 12 innings. Cody McKay drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 12th to force home Pete Zoccolillo with the winning run. Zoccolillo, who was 3-for-6, had doubled to start the inning. Doug Jennings hit a two-out double off the wall in right in the bottom of the 10th to tie the game at 2-2.

ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Luis Martinez will make his eighth start for the Tribe Sunday. Martinez started his Triple-A career with 28.1 scoreless innings working into his fifth start before giving up a run. He is coming off a seven shutout inning performance against Louisville on Aug. 26 that lowered his ERA to 0.99. Martinez has struck out 46 batters in 45.2 innings while giving up 37 hits and 19 walks. He started the season at Double-A Huntsville where he was 8-5 with a 2.58 ERA in 20 starts. At the time of his promotion to Indy, he led the Southern League with 116 strikeouts and was fifth in wins and ERA. Martinez was the Brewers minor league pitcher of the month in April when he went 3-1 with a 0.31 ERA.

Lefthander Nate Teut is slated to start the final game of the season on Monday. The Indians have won Teut's last four starts although Teut has gotten the decision in just one of those starts. Over those four starts, Teut has allowed 11 ER in 22.2 innings (4.37 ERA). Teut's last start came against the Mud Hens on Aug. 27 in a 4-3 win. Teut allowed three runs in six innings.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Pete Zoccolillo has been named the Indians Most Valuable Player. He leads the team with 131 games, 123 hits, 36 doubles, 72 RBI and 51 walks while hitting .280.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Jason Childers has been named the Indians Player of the Month for August after going 3-0 with four saves and a 0.00 ERA. He had a win or save in seven of the Tribe's 15 victories this month, and has allowed just five hits in 11.2 innings.

SHORTHANDED: The Indians have 14 pitchers on the roster and only 10 position players. Several of the position players are banged up. In fact, during Saturday night's game, starting pitcher Pasqual Coco pinch hit for the designated hitter in the sixth inning. Three Tribe pitchers batted in all going 1-for-3.

ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fifth in the IL with a .311 average. David Manning is fourth with 60 bases on balls.

HOT AT THE PLATE: Steve Scarborough has an eight-game hitting streak. He has four multi-hit games on the streak (.429, 12-for-28) , and has raised his average to a season-high .241.

FIELDING PROWESS: Steve Scarborough leads IL shortstops with a .965 fielding percentage. In 458 chances, Scarborough has committed just 16 errors.

NANCE'S NUMBERS: In 29 appearances since May 23, LHP Shane Nance has allowed one run in 44.0 innings. In that period he has allowed just 23 hits and eight walks while striking out 45. Nance threw 34.2 scoreless innings, the longest streak in the minors this season, from May 16 through Aug. 18.

Toledo (Tigers) 3, Indianapolis 2

Indy Site Game Summary:

TOLEDO, OH -- The Toledo Mud Hens held off the visiting Indianapolis Indians for a 3-2 victory in the second to last game of the 2003 season on Sunday evening. Despite out-hitting the Mud Hens by a 14-6 margin, the Indians stranded ten runners on base, including eight over the final four innings. With the win, Toledo moves one half game ahead of the Indians and into third place in the IL West with only one game remaining.

After both teams scored a single run in the first inning, the Indians took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Ryan Knox scored from third base on a wild pitch thrown by Toledo starter John Ennis. Knox had reached on an infield single to open the inning, stole second base, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice by Richard Paz. Ennis (3-11) pitched 6.2 innings to pick up the win for the Mud Hens.

Toledo struck back with two in the bottom of the sixth when third baseman Brant Ust doubled home Cody Ross and AJ Hinch. Ust's double came off Indians relief pitcher Derrin Ebert (0-2), who came on in relief of Robert Marquez. Marquez made a spot start for the Tribe going 4.1 innings allowing four hits and one run.

The Tribe scored first when Knox doubled to leadoff the game. He was then sacrificed to third by Richard Paz, and scored on Pete Zoccolillo's sacrifice fly as the Tribe took an early 1-0 lead.

Eugene Kingsale scored Toledo's first run when he tripled to open the bottom of the first and scored on Ernie Young's RBI single.

The Indians had plenty of opportunities at the plate in the later stages of the game, as they loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings while getting no runs to show for it. Reliever Matt Anderson allowed a single to Doug Jennings with one out in the eighth inning that loaded the bases, but Anderson pitched out of the jam by getting Wilton Veras to pop out and Cody McKay to ground out to second base.

The Indians again loaded the bases in the ninth inning against Anderson when Steve Scarborough, Knox, and Paz all singled. Jason Jimenez was then brought into the game to face Zoccolillo with one out. Jimenez got Zoccolillo to line out to Ernie Young at first base for the second out of the inning, and on the play Young turned and fired a strike to Hens shortstop Omar Infante to catch Knox off of second base for the final out of the game as Jimenez picked up his second save of the season.

Indianapolis pitcher Derek Lee was forced into action as the Tribe's designated hitter in Sunday's game when Alex Delgado and Jim Rushford were both unable to play due to injuries. Lee was 1-for-4 at the plate with a two-out triple in the seventh inning, but was stranded at third when Anderson struck out Knox to end the inning.

The Indians (64-78) and Mud Hens (65-78) will conclude the 2003 season with a 1 p.m. game at Toledo's Fifth Third Field when the Tribe's Nate Teut (3-5, 4.41) will matchup with Pat Ahearne (4-5, 3.36). The winner of the Labor Day contest will claim third place in the International League Western Division.

Indianapolis Box Score:

Ryan Knox's four-hit day wasted; no word on why Luis Martinez was held back, nor the extent of Alex Delgado's or Jim Rushford's injuries...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks spoiled Lake Elsinore?s last chance for a second half South Division title, beating the Storm by a final score of 11-5 on Sunday evening at Mavericks Stadium. The loss by the already playoff-bound Storm gives the Inland Empire 66ers the second half South Division crown.

The Mavs offense exploded for 11 runs and 14 hits, with four different players logging multi-hit games. Johnny Raburn and Froilan Villanueva each had three hits and helped Mavs starter Hubie Pruett win his first start in a Mavs uniform.

Pruett (1-0), who was just called up from the Arizona League, worked five innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits. The right-hander left with a 7-4 lead and watched the Mavs bullpen shutdown a Storm offense that scored 14 runs the night before.

Tony Stavros, Justin Backsmeyer and Bobby Bystrowski combined to limit the Storm to one run on three hits in the final four innings.

Jeremy Frost?s solo shot in the second gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead. After Ben Johnson connected for a two-run shot against Pruett in the third, High Desert picked up four runs in the bottom of the frame against Storm starter Gabe Ribas (4-5). Brian Foster capped the inning with a two-run blast to right-center field, his team-leading 17th of the year.

Joel Alvarado and Raburn had back-to-back doubles to open the game up in the fourth, as the Mavs took a 7-2 lead. After the Storm picked up two in fifth, the Mavs put the game away in the sixth with three more runs. Raburn picked up another RBI with a triple, and two batters later, Villanueva had an RBI double.

Both teams exchanged a run in the eighth to round out the scoring. The Storm?s came on Greg Sain?s 19th home run of the year. The Mavs got their run as Foster?s fielder?s choice plated Ralph Santana.

The Mavs and Storm meet for the final time this year in the final game of the season for the High Desert Mavericks. Tommy Marx (0-4) throws for the Mavs, while Chris Tierney (0-0) makes his Storm debut on Monday night at 7:05.

One guaranteed fan will drive home in a brand new Toyota Echo on Monday night thanks to Valley-Hi Toyota Honda.

Don't let this slip through the crack as it was very entertaining to watch. Delgado (DH) hurt himself during his final at bat and next time through we were amazed to see coco's jersey swinging in the on deck circle. He whiffed but still fun. Next time around it was little Shane Nance's turn...he had a called third strike that was at his eyes. In all fairness to the ump, it WOULD have been a strike on any other hitter but being shorter was eye level for shane. Matt Childers was the next...er victim but he took the first pitch offering and lined it to left. Nice swing that Childers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Congratulations to Hubie Pruett, with one more win that Chad Petty in 15 fewer Maverick starts (and yes, Chad deserved one or two wins along the way, but you still get the point...)...

Jeff Hundley (2-1) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to pick up the win and Brian Adams followed with a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save.

Jeff Hundley was NOT the winning pitcher in this game. The box score, widely issued I know, is WRONG. I know because I was at BellSouth, Sunday. While I don't have my scoresheet in front of me, I can tell you Hundley pitched two innings and Dave Nolasco, who really gets credit for the win (he's now 3-2), pitched the 8th, and if memory serves me correct, gave up the hit that Hundley is charged with in the box.

Thanks to a rain delay of one hour, 24 minutes, I didn't have time to update my site tonight, but I did have time to update the standings link. (www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html)

Dave Krynzel, inserted into the game after the rain delay, tripled, walked, stole a base, recorded EIGHT putouts in CF, one of them a sensational catch in the 9th w/one out. Jesse Gutierrez hit a liner that looked like it would fall into the gap, but Krynzel, on his high horse, made another one of those highlight reel, diving, sliding catches at full throttle, that may have saved the game for Huntsville. Wow. Even the two Lookouts fans behind me gave him a hand, but who wouldn't. The next two hitters singled, so who knows what would have happened with the momentum of three straight one out hits. After Brian Anderson was retired, Conley hit an opposite field screamer to right that was foul by a foot. There's hardly any foul territory at BellSouth, so the drive would have been extra bases, perhaps tying the game, but Conley ended the game with a sharp grounder to Corey Hart.

For my first trip to Bell South, I was treated to one of the most exciting, if not longest games I've seen this year. It started at 7:20 pm and ended after midnight, thanks to the rain.

Well here's to hoping that the Stars have managed to snap out of there funk just in time. Nothing like winning the League title to wipe out memories of a late swoon (remember a couple of years ago when the Yankees absolutely tanked the last two weeks..). Corey Hart now with an even 40 doubles that's mighty impressive, and the 25 steals are intriguing. I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly more sane version of Frankieball in Milwaukee in a few years.

Recent Power 50 addition Drew Anderson was spotlighted in the SportsTicker Daily highlights:

HELENA (PIO) OF DREW ANDERSON homered twice and drove in five runs as the Brewers crushed the Missoula Osprey, 16-0. A University of Nebraska product, Anderson hit a three-run homer to spark a nine-run first frame, singled and scored in the third inning, and added a two-run shot in the seventh to cap the scoring for Helena. The 22-year-old Milwaukee Brewers' prospect had not homered in his first 199 professional at-bats before striking two in five plate appearances during Sunday's win. Anderson has hit a solid .330 through 57 pro games, driving in 36 runs and drawing 33 walks over that stretch.
