Beloit 7, Dayton (Reds) 5, game shortened to six innings, rain

Game Summary from the Dragons' Site:

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (26-43, 61-78) dropped their final game of the 2003 season to the Beloit Snappers (43-26, 75-61-1) in a rain shortened six inning contest 7-5 at Fifth Third Field Monday afternoon.

Offense would not be an issue in the game as the two teams combined for 18 hits and 12 runs in just six innings. Beloit scored first plating two runs in the top of the first inning off Dragon starting pitcher Gorky Batista. With two outs in the first Tony Gwynn Jr. singled to extend the inning. Prince Fielder then ripped a single to right field. Manny Paula misplayed it into a two base error and Gwynn scored. Fielder ended up on third and scored to make it 2-0 when Travis Hinton singled. Batista threw 5.0 innings allowed eight hits, five runs, a walk, and struck out four. Only two of the runs were earned. He also had a wild pitch

Dayton stormed back in the bottom of the first inning tying the score at two runs apiece. Jarrod Schmidt doubled with one out, and Ryan Hanigan belted his first professional homerun to tie the game off Snapper starter Eric Henderson. Henderson lasted 4.0 innings allowed six hits and struck out three. The lefty allowed five runs, but only four were earned. He hit a batter as well.

Beloit broke the tie in the top of the second. Adam Heether reached on a fielder?s choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground ball advanced him to third, and a sacrifice fly from Rickie Weeks would give the lead back to Beloit 3-2.

The Dragons again charged back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Matt Boone singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ivan Reyes drove home Boone with a single. Tulio Araque wasted no time smoking a double off the wall in center field to give Dayton the lead at 4-3.

Clint Keown singled with one out in the fourth inning for the Dragons. He advanced to third when Henderson fired a wild pickoff attempt into right field. He scored on an error to increase the lead to 5-3.

The Snappers tied it back up in the eighth scoring twice. Weeks doubled with one out and scored on a throwing error. Gwynn was safe with a single, and advanced to second on the error. He scored on a single from Fielder to tie the score.

Craig Breslow (W, 3-4) threw the final two innings of relief to pick up the win. He did not allow a run on just one base hit and struck out three.

Damian Ursin (L, 0-2) took the loss allowing two runs on three hits in 1.0 innings of work. Jeff Eure singled to start the inning and scored on a double from Heether to recapture the lead 6-5. Mario Mendez followed with a double to score Eure and cap the scoring at 7-5.

The rains would come in the top of the seventh inning and wash away the final three innings of baseball at Fifth Third Field in 2003. Dayton finishes the season at 61-78 overall and 26-43 in the second half. The Dragons set a MWL and class A record with 590,382 fans through the gates.

Looks like Jason Shelley got in his two innings of work to stay sharp for the postseason, and Chris Saenz acquitted himself nicely in his AA debut...

Game Summary from SportsTicker only (for now):

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Steve Kelly threw eight strong innings and Wilmy Caceres hit a two-run homer to help the Chattanooga Lookouts double up the Huntsville Stars, 4-2. Kelly (4-2), a fourth-round pick in 2001, allowed a run and eight hits, striking out three for the win. Caceres, who finished 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base, homered off Jason Shelley to left field in the bottom of the first inning to put his team on the board. Edwin Encarnacion added an RBI single in the eighth for Chattanooga, which beat Huntsville for just the eighth time in 27 games this season. Brad Salmon earned his first Class AA save - and just the third of his career - despite allowing a run in top of the ninth. Brad Nelson had an RBI double in the second inning and Noochie Varner added a run-scoring hit in the final frame for the Stars, who lead the Lookouts by just a game and a half in the West Division. Shelley (3-2) went two innings, giving up a pair of runs and two hits for the loss.

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks wrapped up their 2003 season on Monday night, losing to the playoff-bound Lake Elsinore Storm by a final score of 8-5 at Mavericks Stadium.

The Storm will face the Inland Empire 66ers in Lake Elsinore on Wednesday night in the first game of a best-of-three series. The winner will meet the first half champion Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in a best-of-five game set. The Mavs failed to make the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

The Storm jumped on Mavs starter Tommy Marx (0-5) for four runs in his four innings of work. Josh Barfield?s sac fly in the first inning put the Storm ahead to stay at 1-0. Barfield, the Cal League MVP, finished the night with two RBIs, giving him 128 on the year.

Trailing 2-0 in the second, the Mavs cut the lead in half, as John Toner tripled off Storm starter Chris Tierney (1-0), and scored on Ozzie Chavez? groundout. Toner sparked a rally in the seventh with his second homer of the year, a solo shot against reliever Kevin Beavers, making it 6-2. The Mavs continued their rally as Chris Morris doubled home Chavez to make it 6-3. Joel Alvarado scored on a Jeremy Frost sac fly, as the Mavs made it 6-4.

The Storm put the game away in the late innings, scoring one in the eighth and one more in the ninth to go up 8-4.

The Mavs attempted a rally in the ninth, as the first two hitters reached against Robert Garvin. Froilan Villanueva picked up his team-leading 76th RBI with an RBI groundout, scoring Alvarado to make it 8-5. With two outs and the tying run on-deck, Garvin got Brian Foster to ground out to end the ballgame.

The Mavs finish the year with a record of 42-98, while the Storm finish their year at 75-65.

The High Desert Mavericks would like to thank all their fans, sponsors and employees who helped make the 2003 season possible. We thank you and look forward to seeing you all next season.

Helena 4, Great Falls (White Sox) 3

Sedar's ejection sparks rally, or at least miscues by the opponent...

Helena Independent Record Game Story:

www.helenair.com/articles...203_02.txt

Helena Site with additional details:

In the wildest game of the year at Kindrick Field in Helena the Brewers beat the Great Falls White Sox 4-3, however it was overshadowed by Helena Manager Eddie Sedar's heroics. With no one on in a tie game in the bottom of the eighth, Manny Ramirez apparently fouled a ball off his foot, however the ball was ruled fair. In the ensuing argument Sedar, after being ejected by home plate umpire Shanna Kook, took third base back to the clubhouse with him.

Helena scored only one earned run, and only managed to bang out four hits. Terry Trofholz and Robby Deevers both singled and stole bases for Helena. Manny Melo and Charlie Lozada both singled on the night.

Mitch Stetter started for the Brewers pitching five innings without allowing an earned run. Stetter left with a 3-2 lead in line for the win. Ty Taubenheim pitched three innings allowing one run to pick up his sixth victory of the year. Nick Slack pitched a perfect ninth to record his 10th save of the year.

Helena plays its final home game of the regular season Tuesday night against Great Falls.

Helena Box Score:

2003 19th round pick RHP Ty Taubenheim (out of a Washington state community college) has been spectacular all season out of the pen, and probably should have seen some starting assignments by now -- his K-to-BB ratio is 44-to-3 in 50.1 IP !!!

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

SAENZ SHINES

The Stars may have lost this final tune-up for the Western Division Playoffs against Birmingham, but as tune-ups go, it was a victory....... The Stars outhit Chattanooga, 10-6, and even though they split this final series, their composite batting average in this series was .275, a darn sight better than the .177 they hit in the final series with the Barons.........

Brandon Gemoll goes out as the Stars' hottest hitter of the moment, going 9-for-17 (.529) in the final series. He'll close out his 2003 season with a.274 average, his highest mark of the season since May 9........ J.J. Hardy, the Stars' Southern League All-Star shortstop, hit .302 in his final 11 games to close out at .280........ Dave Krynzel went 3-for-7 in his final two games. Hopefully, his leadoff triple in Sunday's game is a harbinger for what will come in the playoffs........ And Corey Hart, the Southern League MVP, hit .306 in his final eight games with five doubles and six RBIs, and will finish with a .302 average for the season with 40 doubles and 94 RBIs......... Unfortunately, he also closes with 31 errors at 3rd base on the season, ten in the final month, more than in any previous month. Time will tell whether Milwaukee wants to continue this experiment with Corey at 3rd base, but there were times this season when he looked very good and he has made great strides at this position, considering what he looked like there last year.

So the Stars finish the regular season with a 75-63 record, 2nd best in the league....... The Stars finish with a .245 batting average, 9th best in the league, but the 596 runs they scored was 3rd best........ The pitching all year has just been awesome. The club ERA of 3.17 was the best in the club's history, easily beating the 3.43 ERA of the 1994 Championship team. The 1,143 hits given up was the 2nd fewest in the Stars' 18-year history, just nine hits more than the 1994 team........

Corey Hart led the Southern League in hits (149), doubles (40), and RBIs (94). His 40 doubles tied a Huntsville Stars record set by D.T. Cromer in 1997........ Dave Krynzel led the league in triples with 11, only the 3rd player in Stars history to hit 10+ in a season. Added to his three of last year, he ranks 3rd among the Stars' all-time leaders. His prolonged slump, however, cost him the stolen base title to minor league veteran, Billy Hall, strangely, a former High Desert Maverick (when they were a San Diego affiliate). Hall finished with 44, Krynzel with 43. His total of 56 over two seasons is the 7th best in Stars history........ Only one pitcher, Luis Martinez, finished among the top ten ERA leaders. Luis finished 3rd with a 2.58 ERA......... Former Huntsville Star Bucky Jacobsen won the home run crown with 31 and led the league in slugging as well.

Chris Saenz appears to be a lock for the rotation next year after six solid innings of work, allowing only four hits. Unfortunately the Stars could not sustain a 9th inning rally for him. After Noochie Varner's pinch-hit RBI single, Krynzel lined out and Chris Barnwell flied out to right to end the game....... Krynzel's knee is fine, according to club reports, and he showed it Sunday with that leadoff triple and the rest seemed to do him good, as he ripped a pair of singles in Monday's game at Bell South Park........

Huntsville's only other run came in the 2nd when Gemoll's single was followed by Brad Nelson's double off the left-centerfield wall. At the time, that trimmed Chattanooga's lead to 2-1....... Chattanooga took a 2-0 lead in the 1st when Wilmy Caceres hit a 2-run HR over the wall near the left field foul pole........ The Stars finished 19-8 for the season series against Chattanooga, a club record for the most wins against a team in a single season. The Stars also finished 13-18 down the stretch, the worst August-September record since 1999, when they finished 13-23.

The 1st game for the Western Division title will pit Enemencio Pacheco (12-2, 2.56) against Ben Hendrickson (7-6, 3.45)......... Ben was 2-2 with a 2.67 ERA in August. Pacheco, 2nd among SL ERA leaders, hasn't lost a game since June 5 at Pringles Park......... Neal Cotts was returned to Birmingham by the Chicago White Sox, and just where he fits in in the playoff picture is a puzzle. Unless special permission is granted, and usually it's because of an injury, a Double-A team cannot get post-season help from a Triple-A team or its major league affiliate...... Cotts made his first start Monday since rejoining the Barons after being roughed up by the Yankees last Thursday. (He gave up 5 runs in 1/3 of an inning.)........ Perhaps Cotts was used just to set up the rotation for the Barons in the upcoming series....... The momentum may have swung over to the Stars side, as Birmingham lost 3 of 4 to last place Greenville in their final series. There's still a lot of baseball left for Huntsville, so stick with me for more updates, starting after Wednesday night's game.

We will, David -- thanks as always! -- MB

Similar to the General Manager change in Beloit, there's a smooth transition taking place in High Desert.

Brewerfan.net wishes Brian Mann well in his new position, and thanks Brett Miles for allowing his staff to be so accommodating to Brewerfan the past couple of years.

Baker, Carpenter and Henderson gave up way too many runs against a horrible Dayton team(saw them play in Beloit over an entire series). This doesn't provide much promise for a playoff run. Carpenter has been a true "Dow Joneser"(stealing some material from Dick VItale). I believe his previous start had decent BB:K numbers. On Sunday, he was terrible. Sarfate and Ballouli, pray for rain!
