Link Report for Games of Thursday, August 28th

While I share your lack of enthusiam for Kade Johnson's future, I'm not sure that we're losing a lot by sending him to the AFL. From what I understand, teams bid on AFL slots by position...so somebody may get a SS slot that they wanted but have to 'settle' for a catcher slot that doesn't really fit their needs. I can't really see another player that would absolutely need the AFL atbats...the only exception I could see would be Weeks. In retrospect, the Brewers might now think that Krynzel needs a break instead of more baseball, but I'm sure that it seemed a good idea at the time.

If someone could please clarify the AFL selection process, MAYBE I could understand the Johnson pick. However, if catcher was our "slot", I would have rather given it to Vandy. As a college graduate, he isn't that much younger than Johnson. Absent of such process, I totally agree about resting Krynzel and playing Weeks.

I know this thread is a little old, but I thought I'd chime in since it doesn't appear anyone answered.

To be eligiable to play in the AFL, a player must have been in AA before a certain date- I wanna say July 31, but I'm not sure. Each team gets one exception to that eligability rule.

So, if Milwaukee was indeed slotted a catcher, and they chose to send Vandy, they would not be able to send Weeks (or anyone else from Beloit/HD) to the AFL, as he would have used the "under AA" exception.

Under such circumstances, it makes a lot more sense to send Johnson.

But who/what determines the Brewers need to send a catcher and team X sends a shortstop, etc? Is it on some sort of rotating basis? Do the teams "bid" for the positions?

That's a good question. I wonder if any of the insiders could provide us with the answer.
