From Baseball America's Daily Dish:

Brewers low Class A righthander Dennis Sarfate is looking for his 10th straight victory tonight for Beloit. He's stayed under the prospect radar for most of the season despite his success. A ninth-rounder out of Chandler-Gilbert (Ariz.) JC in 2001, the 6-foot-4 22-year-old entered this season with 38 innings in two seasons. Last April, Sarfate was sidelined for most of the year after having elbow surgery. He's bounced back this season and has topped out at 98 mph while showing an improved changeup and power curveball. He's 12-2, 2.67 with 136 strikeouts and 62 walks in 135 innings.

Without any audio http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif , kind of tough to know how Dennis made out tonight until we get a final score...

Toledo (Tigers) 3, Indianapolis 1

Indy Site Game Summary:

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Toledo Mud Hens snapped the Indianapolis Indians six-game winning streak with a 3-1 win over the Tribe at Victory Field on Wednesday night. Despite outhitting the Mud Hens 9-7, the Indians stranded six runners and hit into three double plays in the game. The win moves Toledo back ahead of Indianapolis and into third place in the International League West.

Seth Greisinger (6-9) pitched 8.0 innings of shutout baseball allowing just seven hits. The righthander headed to the mound for the bottom of the ninth, but a 36-minute rain delay halted play and ended Greisinger's night.

The Mud Hens (64-76) scored two in the bottom of the second inning off Indians starter Pasqual Coco, one of which came as Patrick Lennon stole home. Lennon, who led off the inning with a walk, stood on third base following two groundouts when Brant Ust was walked. With Matt Walbeck at the plate, Ust took off for second base drawing a throw to second from Indians catcher Alex Delgado. Shortstop Steve Scarborough fielded the throw in front of second base and immediately fired home as Lennon had taken off from third. Scarborough's throw was wide of the plate as Lennon slid in safely with the Hens' first run. Walbeck then singled through the left side of the infield to score Ust from second as Toledo would then have all the runs they would need.

The Mud Hens took a 3-0 lead in the eighth when Cody Ross scored on an RBI single by Lennon off Tribe reliever Travis Miller.

Coco, who drops to 10-9 on the year, pitched seven innings allowing five hits and only two runs, but was unable to receive any support from the Indians offense.

The Tribe scored their only run following the rain delay when Cody McKay scored on a one-out single by Wilton Veras. Chris Mears then got Doug Jennings to roll into a game-ending double play to pick up his second save of the season.

The Indians will host Columbus on Friday and Saturday for the final two home games of the season. Columbus trails first-place Louisville by 2.5 games following a loss to Louisville on Thursday night. The Tribe will send Ben Ford (5-2, 2.73) to the mound on Friday night as the San Diego Chicken makes his final appearance of the season at Victory Field.

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 9, High Desert 2

MassBrew is your MVP in this one just for listening to the whole thing, although I'll admit the tidy two-hour, 11-minute game time was the only thing that allowed that to happen. Defense failed starter Dan Hall, but his very tough season (6-14) ended with another sub-par performance, as he's especially struggled since the All-Star break. The Mavs have a complete game thrown at them, and are now guaranteed of posting the worst record in franchise history. No Mavs to the Cal League year-end All-Star team, but that's not a surprise.

Details on all the night's action Friday AM....

High Desert Site Game Summary:

ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks took the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday night, defeating the High Desert Mavericks by a final score of 9-2 at Mavericks Stadium. The win keeps the JetHawks within at least 2.5 games of Lake Elsinore for the wild card in the South Division. The loss drops the Mavs to 40-96 overall in 2003.

John Castellanos (7-3) picked up his first complete game of the year, allowing two runs on seven hits over nine innings. Castellanos had five K?s without allowing a walk, in earning the JetHawks their 20th win in 27 tries against the Mavs.

The JetHawks took the early lead in the first inning with two unearned runs. With Marland Williams at second and no outs, Danny Richar lined out to Ozzie Chavez at short. Chavez quickly fired to second in an attempt to double off Williams, but instead through it away, allowing Williams to score. Kyle Nichols followed two batters later with a solo shot to right field, his 30th of the year, giving the JetHawks a 2-0 lead. Mike Thiessen?s fifth of the year, a solo shot to left in the second, put them up 3-0.

The Mavs answered with a run in the bottom of the second, as Brian Foster?s RBI single knocked in Johnny Raburn for the Mavs first run.

Three runs in the fourth off of Dan Hall (6-14) put the game out of reach, as the JetHawks went up 6-1.

Jeremy Frost?s ninth homer of the year in the fourth, pulled the Mavs to within four, at 6-2.

Hall gave up two more in the fifth as Lancaster went up 8-2. They added a run in the sixth, as Marland Williams homered for a 9-2 lead. Hall only lasted five innings, allowing eight runs, five earned, on ten hits.

Castellanos allowed just two hits in the final five innings, as the Mavs never threatened again.

Bobby Bystrowski pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Mavs, who have not won a series since early May, when they swept the Stockton Ports.

The Mavs and Lake Elsinore Storm open up the final series of the 2003 regular season on Friday night, in game one of a four-game series. Danny Kolb (5-12) takes the hill for the Mavs, while Lake Elsinore sends Mike Wodnicki to the mound. Game time is at 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Mavericks Stadium.

Who exactly does Weeks think he is with that nearly .500 OBP? Barry Bonds. Aren't these college kids supposed to take a little while to adjust to wood bats. It gets harder and harder to admit that Weeks is not the top Brewer prospect. I'll holdout for awhile yet until we've seen Weeks keep it up for atleast another month. And to the folks at BP who dissed the move because of his competition: CAN YOU SEE HIM HIT NOW? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I went to the game last night but got back a little to late to post anything.

Sarfate gave up back-to-back homers to account for 3 of his runs. Other then that, he again looked pretty good. Before the game he said he was only going five innings so if anyone was concerned with his short outing, no need to be.

I dont know how Weeks did not get any official errors in this game. He launced a throw to first that went about two feet over Prince's head and landed on the top of the LumberKings dugout. He did make some other nice plays though. He has a really strong arm and it will be nice once he gets it under control. The first time he was hit, he really stared down the opposing pitcher. I thought the benches were going to clear. Coach Money went down to the home plate ump and started jawing with him but that was about it.

John Vanden Berg's home run nearly hit the scoreboard in left-center. The person that got the ball tried to throw it back but it hit the bottom of the scoreboard and stayed out there. It was rather amusing.

Before the game Prince and Manny Parra accepted their Brewers Batter and Pitcher of the month awards for July and Parra accepted Dennis Sarfate's trophy for being named Beloit's MVP for the year.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

INCHES AWAY

I apologize for not reporting Wednesday's eventful game. Just not enough sleep, and, like the Stars, I simply ran out of gas shortly after I got home........ There was a lot to talk about, too, topped by Birmingham's clinch of the Western Division title, but there's this fresh news tonight before I get to the details of tonight's game.

Right-hander Chris Saenz (pronounced signs) will join the Stars in Chattanooga tomorrow from High Desert and may start one of the four remaining of the regular season there. I know Ben Hendrickson will start Friday, followed by Greg Bruso on Saturday, but I expect manager Frank Kremblas and pitching coach Stan Kyles will want Pedro Liriano and Jason Shelley rested for the playoffs, so Saenz will probably start Sunday or Monday, with a spot starting appearance from the bullpen.........

Saenz was High Desert's big winner, euphemistically, considering the Mavs' club record 96 losses (to date), with a 9-9 record and 5.20 ERA, but consider his 136 strikeouts and 56 walks in 128 innings there. Quite an accomplishment in that park, I'd say. And don't snicker at those nine victories. In 1997, Bill King led the 77-62 Stars with just nine victories for the A's organization.

The Southern League earlier in the morning named its post-season All-Star team, voted on by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters, and print media....... The league recognized the outstanding defensive work of Dave Krynzel by naming him to the outfield, with shortstop J.J. Hardy and 3rd baseman Corey Hart.........

Krynzel, despite a lengthy slump, leads the league in triples (10), and is tied for the league lead in stolen bases (42)........ Corey, a SL MVP candidate, leads the league with 90 RBIs, 144 hits, and 36 doubles........ J.J., in addition to his major league-caliber defense, has been a potent offensive weapon for the Stars this season from the #3 slot in the order........

This makes the most Huntsville players to be named to the post-season All-Star team since the Stars became a Milwaukee affiliate. Go to the standings for the complete list of Huntsville's All-Stars since 1985, as well as the Southern League All-Star team.......

Friday, the awards will be announced --- MVP, Manager-of-the-Year, RHP Pitcher of the Year, and LHP of the Year. The Stars have some strong candidates for these awards and they will be announced at noon.

Weren't too many fans for Fan Appreciation Night, despite being coaxed by a concert from the Christian group Out of Eden, who performed after the game, but it was the most from this four-game series....... Unfortunately, the Stars fell 1,584 shy of attracting 200,000 for the season, the 2nd lowest at the gate in Stars history, the first time since 1988 they fell below 200K. I guess the luxury of cupholders this year wasn't enough. It's going to take a massive reconstruction project at this park to get fans to come out at the levels they once enjoyed, and a reduction in the parking cost, but this is in the city's hands. They own the park and they hold the future of professional baseball in this city in their hands.

The regular season ends, but the powerless Stars' problems do not........ You would think after all the celebrating last night in Birmingham's locker room that they would be a little lackadaisical and party-worn tonight, but a combination of stubborn defense and pitching supported the few runs the Barons were able to muster, and so the Stars were swept in four for the first time this season........

Wally Backman, saving up Enemencio Pacheco for the playoffs, took his right-handed stopper out of the game after five innings of one-hit pitching, but Backman could have sent Charlie Brown out there and still been able to preserve the victory....... Pacheco, who has not lost since early July, retired 7 of the first 8 Stars hitters before Chris Barnwell pulled a single down the left field line in the 3rd inning........

One of Pacheco's two losses came against the Stars on May 30, 5-2, to Derek Lee........ The impotent Stars, whose clubhouse mood is still said to be loose and focused away from all the losses, loaded the bases in the 6th inning with two out, but Noochie Varner, going for the golden sombrero, popped out to right, the second of three times tonight, to end the 6th inning. That's the second time in this series that they have left the sacks full........ In this series, the Stars left 33 runners on base, 16 in scoring position.

Trailing 2-0 entering the 8th, the Stars were able to dig up that old two-out magic........ Hardy drew a walk, his second of the game, and on a 1-0 pitch, Hart saw a Jason Stumm fastball and went for the fences....... There was no doubt about it as he drove it deep to left-center to tie the game with his club-leading 13th home run of the season and his league-leading 90th RBI........ It was the first time in this whole series that the Stars were able to tie the Barons, let alone take a lead........ Was it enough to energize the Stars?

Not enough, but only by inches, as the game progressed ........ Jeff Hundley would retire the Barons in order, with the help of a nice cherry-picker catch of a soft liner by Hardy to retire Guillermo Reyes for the first out of the 8th, clearly the best defensive play of the game (you could make a case for Varner's throwout at home of Steve Morales in the 2nd inning, though)........

With one out in the bottom of the 9th, the Stars, sensing a way out of this slump and an important lift for their morale, rallied....... Kade Johnson, who struck out swinging three times tonight, walked on five pitches. Barnwell then hit an 0-1 grounder to the weak side of shortstop Reyes, who dropped the ball before trying to get it to stick in his glove for an error....... Alejandro Machado's fly ball to left moved Johnson to third base and Barnwell took the empty base on a 1-0 count to Daryl Clark, but Clark, who came into the game in the 2nd inning after David Krynzel twitched his knee trying to beat out a grounder in the 1st, was retired on an easy grounder to Tom Nicholson, after working the count full.

The Barons took the lead in the 10th on a two-out single by Jeremy Reed......... Reed, a 2nd round draft pick by the Sox last year, came into the game with a .455 average against Huntsville........Following a single to center by Reyes, and a walk by Ryan Miller to Nicholson, Reed chopped a 3-2 pitch through the left side hole into left-center field to make it 3-2.........

Corey came oh so close to tying the game in the bottom of the 10th, crushing a 2-0 pitch to dead-center --- 405-ft. territory --- but Chad Durham, on his horse, climbed the wall and snatched the ball over the yellow home run line, robbing Corey of his 2nd home run of the game........ Brandon Gemoll followed that with his 4th walk of the game (the 3rd Stars player to walk four times in a game this season), but Varner's easy one-hop grounder to Tom Nicholson ended the game.

The Stars have now lost eight of their last nine games, and are assured their first losing month since April 2002........ In the last nine games, the Stars have hit a pathetic .214........ The Stars have now scored 93 runs this month. With four games to go, they may have their worst scoring month of the year. They scored just 111 times in May........ Hardy stole his 4th base in his last seven games, after stealing just two through the first four months of the season. A six-game hit streak for Hardy ended tonight.......... Hart is hitting .346 in his last 13 games with six doubles and seven RBIs.........

Jeff Housman, Frankie's workhorse in the rotation, has now given up 20 hits in his last two starts. His ERA has jumped from 1.14 after August 12 to 3.79 after three starts. In 14 2/3 innings, Housman has given up 15 runs, 13 earned, on 26 hits and has lost a pair of games......... Krynzel's streak of striking out has ended at a record 19 games.......... In his last three games from the pen, Ryan Miller has given up six hits and four walks in three innings........

The Stars have one more chance to get that winning feeling back before the playofffs as they head to Chattanooga Friday. The Lookouts have won four of their last five......... Fans venturing the two hours to Bell South Park will see a familiar face at 2nd base. The Lookouts now have Dionys Cesar, who hit .282 in 60 games in 2001. The Lookouts will send Daylan Childress (1-4, 8.10) against Ben Hendrickson (7-5, 3.61)...... Ben is 2-0 against the Lookouts in 11 scoreless innings this season.

I was pleased to meet three emissaries from brewerfan.net after the game, who traveled from LaCrosse and Beloit, Wisconsin, and Georgia to see the game tonight. I'm sorry they never got to see the Stars at their best, but they promised they'd come back next season........ To comster Chris Hawkinson and his traveling party, I'd personally like to welcome them back. We'll have a pizza after the game and talk Snapper baseball. It was good to talk and I wish we had more time.

Nice Question Igor. Unfortunately with the invention of the internet any moron with a connection can put up a site and pretend as if it's written by someone who actually knows something about baseball. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Had a great time at the game last night david, even if the final outcome was a bit of a dissapointment.

I heartily suggest everyone make it to huntsville in 2004. its a very professional organization.

A few notes:

Corey Hart looks exactly like Sexson did at his age..i was very impressed with the way he swings the bat

Kade Johnson is royally over matched...I would be surprised if he ever makes it beyond AA

Housman topped out at 88, but worked mostly in the 84-86 range...Tom Glavine and Jaime Moyer can do it...but who else can?

Krynzel's injury is nothing

Daryl Clark looked pretty uncomfortable in Right fielf

and finally, Nooche Varner has an undeniable Cannon

perhaps, he sould be called mr cannon!

anyway, i had a great time chris and Mike..and david...

and thanx again to robert portnoy for the passes!
