Amaze your friends with Link Report trivia!

Q. Name the only current Brewer farmhand in the organization who hails from Canada.

A. He was the 2001 5th round pick, his name's in this post, and it's not Jason Shelley.

So now you know! (Ontario, Canada, by the way....)

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

SHUTOUT SWAP

This will be remembered as the shutout series, at least by me........ There are Huntsvillians who couldn't name a single player on this team, even those who come to one game a year, let alone anything else ("We got a great pitcher whatsisname, well we can't even spell it", from a group called "Alabama", no less).

For this one, I traveled down to Hoover Met with some Booster Club members...... Hoover Met is one of the nicest parks in the league. It has nearly the same outfield dimensions as the Joe. It has an air of grandness from the outside with its decorative walks and an enormous facade behind the field level seating that serves to hold skybox holders (who can watch the game outside as well as inside, unlike The Joe) and acts as an echo chamber when the crowd gets excited........ The field level seats are similar to the upper level seats at JDS, except they're not cracked and broken. And they are more acutely slanted than at the Joe. There are no "nosebleed" seats, except at the skybox and press level........ And the scoreboard is in working order of course, another major difference.

I enjoyed the dollar cokes, the same size that are still $2.50 at the Joe, even on the night they offered dollar cokes....... Wish I could say I enjoyed the ballgame as well........The reverberating noise of "thunder sticks" was not the issue, as it was with my traveling partners, it was the kind of ineptitude and impotence I saw again from the Stars tonight, the kind I saw too much of in August --- swinging at bad pitches, swinging on the first or second pitch (notice no Huntsville Star drew a walk tonight, and only Brandon Gemoll saw a 3-2 count. No one else saw a three-ball count of any kind), and the inability to score with two out.

This looked like it wouldn't be the case In the 1st inning......... After Dave Krynzel and Alejandro Machado continued their hitless streaks in this series (0-for-14 coming in, now 0-for-22), J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart hit back-to-back singles, and Tetsu Yofu's wild pitch moved the runners to second and third......... With Gemoll, who was 6-for-11 off Yofu during the season, at the plate, Yofu tried to pick Corey off of second. J.J. broke for home and was a dead duck at the plate.........

In the 2nd inning, this time down 3-0, the Stars loaded the bases with two out. Gemoll had led off with a single to left-center and two outs later, Chris Barnwell and Mike Kremblas singled........ Krynzel, on a 1-2 pitch, rapped a sharp grounder that looked like it might get through between third and short, but 3rd baseman Tom Nicholson ranged over and fielded the ball, and forced Kremblas out at second......... The Stars would not put two runners on base in the same inning for the rest of the game.

The Barons kept putting runners on base and we kept taking them off, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case in the 1st inning (or later in the 6th, thanks only to a pair of careless errors)........ The Barons poked through the Stars defense. Not one of the Barons' four hits in that inning were hard-hit........ Chad Durham, Danny Sandoval, and Jeremy Reed hit back-to-back singles off starter Jason Shelley to load the bases. Reed had been held hitless in 7 at-bats until he blooped a hit inside the left field line...... Gabe Alvarez grounded Shelley's first pitch to Machado to score Durham....... Scott Bikowski, a .290 hitter with 12 RBIs vs. the Stars this season, hit a 3-2 worm-killer through the right side for a 2-run single, and a 3-0 lead........

Bikowski later kept a two-out rally alive in the 6th by fouling off four pitches, while working the count full, before getting a walk........ That retired Shelley, who threw 99 pitches, 57 for strikes....... The Stars, however, gave the Barons two extra outs that inning. Jeremy Reed hit a one-out ground ball right to Hardy for an easy throwout, but the usually infallible shortstop could not find the handle on the ball, allowing Reed to reach........ Reed was forced out by Gabe Alvarez, but Alvarez eventually reached third when Carlos Maldonado's easy grounder came off the glove of Machado for another error........ Instead of being out of the inning, Jon Hamilton singled to right, scoring Alvarez and Bikowski.

The Stars have now averaged just 1.7 runs per game in their last 13 meetings with Birmingham........ Not a hopeful sign for a team that now must win to keep their season alive......... Pedro Liriano (9-13, 3.65), who was 2-3 with a 6.32 ERA in August, will be the Stars' clutch starter, while the Barons go with Neal Cotts (9-7, 2.16), whose confidence has needed a boost since going 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA in four starts with the White Sox recently......... Cotts held Huntsville hitters to a .164 average in 3 starts during the season, all of which he won....... The Stars have hit .174 in this series........ If the series goes to game #5, the Barons now will go with Corwin Malone, who is familiar with playoff pressure, having beaten the Stars in Game 1 of the 2001 playoff series.
