Maybe they dropped the ball a bit there? Alternatively if Gripp had gone up DJ would have been the obvious choice to go back to Huntsville, but that would have left practically nothing at HD for offense.

Replacing OF Mark Smith on the Indianapolis roster is Huntsville OF Ryan Knox, who returns to AAA.

For the moment, your Huntsville outfielders are Brad Nelson, David Krynzel, and Noochie Varner. Ryan Gripp saw some time in right field a couple of weeks ago, but now he's moved on as well with his release.

We'll likely see additional movement (Daryl Clark?) soon, but that's just speculation for now.

I would think that the Stars are going to need one more outfielder, even in the short term. Nelson is still an experiment in left and I doubt he'll want to play there every single day during a pennant race. And if he moves to first once a week (or DHes), they'll need somebody to play the outfield.

That said, it's got to be Daryl. He deserves a chance to join that club for the playoff drive and he has nothing left to prove in High Desert. It will be rough on the Mavs, but that's no reason to punish D.J.

He's gotta learn somewhere, Bill. AA with a playoff spot sewn up seems like a good spot to me.

That's true... but at the same time, you don't really want to be stuck with just 3 outfielders. If D.J. gets called up, he and Nelson can split the time in left, Gemoll and Nelson can split the time at first, and all three can split time at DH. That means 2 of the 3 will be playing every day and all 3 will get time against AL teams.

Just an idea,

The Brewers placed RHP Ruben Castillo of the Arizona Brewers on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury.

Castillo just turned 20; the Brewers signed him out of Venezuela. This is his first year state-side. Castillo had struggled in six relief appearances in Arizona thus far this summer.

Of the 23 games remaining on the Stars schedule, only 4 will have the DH. Birmingham and Orlando are the only 2 AL teams in the Southern League and the Stars finished their season series with Orlando back on April 17.

With the promotion of Knox, release of Gripp, and DL of Jones, the Stars are now 2 players short of the 23 man limit (which expands to 24 in a couple of days). They have 11 pitchers but only 10 position players so they really need Clark and another position man. It's hard to wn close games with only 2 subs available.

From what I have seen of them both, Nelson is already far superior to Clark in LF. He has similar talents, but he actually hustles to get to the ball.

In a playoff situation, I wouldn't want to see any of the present squad except Gemoll on first.

The real insanity in this whole situation was the release of Gripp, he was excellent on first or third and at least as good as Nelson or Clark in LF. He was also a great pinch hitter. Exactly the sort of guy we needed for the play-offs.

Does anyone know if he asked for his release as has been suggested or was just plain released?

I tend to suspect the latter.

justice...light em up this time dj!

Indeed... Hopefully Daryl has the Double-A jitters out of the way and can hit like he's capable of this time. Sucks for High Desert, but it's the right thing to do.

He was very accurate at hitting the cut off man whenever he got to the ball which suggests his arm would be fine at third.

Has he good reactions?

Has he played third much?

I really would quite like to see Corey at first and Clark at third- if he is any good there.

Hart is the better prospect than Clark (or, it is fairly safe to assume he is), so giving up defensive time at third, which Corey needs, to DJ, is not really the best idea. We all know Clark can play 3B in a pinch, but he needs to develop as an OF also if he wants to have a better chance to make it to the show. My thought has been the last few seasons to see if DJ can play at second base, but that's obviously not in the Brewers' plans at the moment. Clark might spend some time at 1B spelling Gemoll, but with Barnwell there, I don't see too much action forthcoming for DJ at third.

We'll add more information in a bit, but here's the 2003 numbers, a bit underwhelming, for the newest High Desert Maverick, RH bat and outfielder John Toner, released by the Mets' organization -- with Port St. Lucie (high-A) and Capital City (low-A).

2002 numbers were fine, but were split between rookie ball and low-A. This link provides draft, college, and other info on Toner, who will be 24 this September:

As mentioned elsewhere on the Minor League forum here today, RHP Ryan Trytten was released from Beloit's roster in order to make room for 2003 # 1 draft pick Rickie Weeks.

Trytten was a 39th round draft pick in 2000 who made his debut in 2001 in Arizona. Over the last two seasons in Beloit, he simply allowed too many baserunners (and runs), and wasn't striking out nearly enough batters, especially for a right-hander.
