Reds outfield shot and dragged to death

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Associated Press

MESA, Ariz. -- Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson was shot then dragged to his death behind a pick-up truck early Wednesday morning, Chandler police confirmed to the East Valley Tribune.

Stenson, who played in 37 games for the Reds this season, was in Arizona where he played with the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League.

His body was found in the street near Dobson Road and Chandler Blvd., said Chandler police Sgt. Mark Franzen.

Arizona Fall League officials canceled Wednesday and Thursday's games in the wake of the incident.

"This is really awful," said Davona Vojovich, a friend of Stenson's who was outside Scottsdale Stadium when she was told of the incident, "I can't believe this happened."

Residents told police they saw the man thrown off a black sport utility vehicle about 1:45 a.m. It appeared he had been shot and run over by the vehicle.

Residents were able to provide police with a description of the vehicle. A short time later, police located an SUV matching that description in Mesa.

Chandler Detective Emma Bribiescas said police impounded the SUV and are interviewing the driver, but she would not say whether he was a suspect.

Stenson, of LaGrange Ga., hit .247 with three home runs and 13 RBIss in 37 games with Reds this season. He was a third-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1996 and played briefly with Boston during the 2002 season. He was claimed off waivers by Cincinnati on March 1.

League games cancelled for Thursday.

Saguaros 9, Javelinas 3

Kade Johnson 13-for-32; his .406 average is reminiscient of another current Arizona resident, Ted Williams -- uh, sorry...

An error by Hunter Brown (SEA) opened the door for the Saguaros to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break the game wide open as the Saguaros defeated the Javelinas 9-3 at the Peoria Sports Complex. The key hit in the five run attack was a two out grand slam from Marlins prospect Chris Aguila to deep left field. Aguila led all hitters in the game, going 3-for-5 with four RBI?s. Cliff Bartosh (DET) pitched two innings in relief to earn the victory and improve his record to 3-1 on the season.

Jason Bourgeois (TEX) added a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 9-3 game. Bourgeois finished the game with two hits in four trips to the plate with three RBI?s.

The Javelinas drew first blood in the game when David DeJesus (KC) hit a two run homer to left field to give the Javelinas a 2-0 lead.

Friday's AFL game features birthday boy David Krynzel (22) and the Saguaros on mlb.com audio at 2:00 PM Central. The game does archive. According to earlier notes, Ben Hendrickson is not scheduled to pitch Friday -- that could change.

Just had the pleasure of listening to the first four innings of Friday's Saguaros game on the mlb.com free archive. Nice listening to live baseball again. Ben Hendrickson was outstanding yet again -- my goodness, what an AFL season he's had.

Four shutout innings, 4 K's, 2 hits, only two balls in the air, I believe. Snapping off the curve as always.

Ben has now walked just two batters in 26.2 IP against tough competition.

Ground balls galore, only one HR allowed this fall, and pinpoint control. Unlike Luis Martinez, Pedro Liriano, and to a lesser extent, a still very young Mike Jones, Hendrickson (and his LH counterpart, Manny Parra) have the ridiculous control thing down to a science.

Consider me very, very impressed, as we all should be.

Congrats, Ben! That ice fishing will be sweet this winter!

David Krynzel was the only Brewer position player to start the game. He made two weak outs, both on the first pitch of his AB's. Frank Kremblas pinch-hit for him in the fifth, perhaps to send a message?

Wow, look what happened to the Saguaros after they removed Ben -- box score in the AM...

Scorpions 7, Saguaros 2

The Scorpions sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as they defeated the Saguaros 7-2 in Scottsdale. The key hit in the five run attack came on Dane Sardinha?s (CIN) two run blast into the left field bullpen.

The Saguaros jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a one out RBI double by Chris Aguila (FLA) scoring Josh Willingham (FLA) and a RBI single by Mets prospect Justin Huber scoring Aguila.

Diamondbacks prospect Sergio Santos (AZ) provided an insurance run with his third homer of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Scorpions a 6-2 lead.

Pete Sikaras (AZ) pitched a scoreless fifth inning to earn the win for the Scorpions and improve his record to 2-0 on the season. For the rest of the Diamondbacks, Brandon Medders struck out three of the four batters he faced in the game. Scott Hairston (AZ) led all hitters at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two singles, two doubles, two RBI?s and a run scored. Josh Kroeger (AZ) and Chris Snyder (AZ) finished a combined 1-for-7 at the plate with a run scored.

As a tribute to the memory of Dernell Stenson (CIN), each Scorpion batter used Stenson?s bat in his first trip to the plate.

Saguaros 10, Scorpions 3

Rickie Weeks' OBP now at .432 after 79 plate appearances; Kade Johnson now 15-for-34 for a .441 AVG and a 1.088 OPS. Now 25 years old, the Brewers may as well stick him at AAA Indy and see what happens...

The Saguaros scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning highlighted by a two run single by Jason Bourgeois (TEX) and a two run double from Rickie Weeks (MIL) as the Saguaros beat the Scorpions 10-3 at the Peoria Sports Complex. With the victory, the Saguaros gain a game in the standings, and trail the first-place Solar Sox by only two and one-half games in the American Division.

The Saguaros scored first when Jon Knott (SD) hit a two run homer to left field in the bottom of the second inning to give the Saguaros a 2-0 lead, a lead which they would never relinquish. Knott finished the game going 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI?s. Weeks also had three hits in the game, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI?s for the Saguaros.

Leonard Dinardo (NYM) relieved Saguaros starting pitcher Matt Peterson in the fourth inning to pick up the win and improve his record to 2-0 on the season.

Diamondback prospects Scott Hairston, Sergio Santos, Chris Snyder and Josh Kroeger went a combined 3-for-16 in the game including a ninth inning homer from Snyder.

Rotoworld on Ben:

Ben Hendrickson pitched four scoreless innings Friday and now has a 2.03 ERA after seven starts in the AFL. Now healthy after battling elbow problems during the minor league season, Hendrickson has given up 24 hits, walked two and struck out 21 in 26 2/3 innings. The 22-year-old is a potential fourth starter for the Brewers and could make his debut in the second half of next season.

I keep looking at Johson's line and all I can think of is Billy Hall II. Granted Hall was a lot younger when he tore up HD then struggled in AA for half a season, prior to recovering for a good AFL campaign and then getting promoted to AAA. Sound Familiar? One could think that he's made some improvements, but I'm skeptical since the pitching is weaker the elevation higher and it's only been 34 ABs with modest power. One can always hope though.

If you throw Kade to the AAA gods, what about Ricky? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif I don't think they will or should start Ricky at Indy, but other than his D? The guy is ripping up the southwest, that picking 2nd in the draft seems to make it a little easier.

Desert Dogs 18, Saguaros 3

Best news on this one -- no Brewer pitcher worked! Rickie Weeks manages to reach base in three of five plate appearances -- his OBP rises to .442, he's been HBP five times this fall; Brad Nelson's really bumped up the walk rate as of late, now with nine vs. 77 AB's for a bump of 88 points in OBP. vs AVG. David Krynzel was removed from the leadoff spot and is down to .226 with only two walks vs. 84 AB's. He did reach via HBP for the fourth time this fall on Monday. Tuesday's game (3:30 Central and archived later on) is an mlb.com broadcast game, and the last chance to listen in to the Saguaros, as play ends later this week.

The Desert Dogs scored early and often as they belted out a season high 23 hits and scored 14 runs in the final three innings en route to an 18-3 massacre over the Saguaros at the Peoria Sports Complex. Each Desert Dog starter had at least one hit in the game with Chris Duffy (PIT) leading the offense going 4-for-6 with five RBI?s and two runs scored. Dan Johnson (OAK), Luke Scott (CLE) and Tony Schrager (BOS) each had three RBI?s in the game and combined to go 8-for-16 at the dish with six runs scored.

The Desert Dogs jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Johnson?s fourth homer of the season. One inning later, Schrager scored on Duffy?s sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to make it a three run lead. In the top of the seventh inning with the Desert Dogs up 4-3, they sent 12 men to the plate and scored seven runs on five hits and three walks. One inning later, the Desert Dogs added six more runs on five consecutive singles (eight total hits) in the inning.

Pirates prospect Frank Brooks pitched one and one-third innings in relief to pick up the victory for the Solar Sox. Saguaros starting pitcher Trevor Hutchinson (FLA) gave up four runs in three and two-thirds innings to remain winless (0-4) on the season. Alan Webb (SD) and Cliff Bartosh (DET) gave up a combined 13 runs on 13 hits in one and two-thirds innings pitched.

Desert Dogs 11, Saguaros 4

J.R. House (PIT) celebrated his 24th birthday as he went 5-for-5 with four RBI?s in the game and hit for the cycle in front of Pirates GM Dave Littlefield as the Desert Dogs trounced the Saguaros 11-4 in Mesa. Red Sox prospect Bryan Hebson struck out four of the six batters he faced to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Chris Aguila (FLA) and J.J. Furmaniak (SD) led the Saguaros offensively as Aguila went 2-for-4 with two RBI?s and Furmaniak went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

The key point in the game came in the bottom of the second inning with two outs when Jeremy Owens (BOS) hit a grounder sharply back to the mound striking Regilio in the leg. The Desert Dogs then responded with four consecutive hits leading to three runs in the frame.

Saguaros starter Nick Regilio (TEX) took the loss as he allowed five runs on five hits in two innings pitched.
