Don't worry about catching the audio archive of this one. David Krynzel's suddenly no longer at .318, as was the case a few days ago, and projected over a 600 AB season, would walk exactly ten times -- sample is now at 60 AFL at-bats...

Solar Sox 3, Saguaros 1

Solar Sox pitchers Dewon Brazelton (TB), Carlos Hines (TB), Justin Huisman (COL) and Aaron Rakers (BAL) threw a combined one-hitter as the Solar Sox beat the Saguaros 3-1 in Mesa. In his last three starts, Brazelton has gone 3-0 with a microscopic 0.60 ERA and 0.80 WHIP and allowed only six hits, six walks and one earned run in 15 innings of work while striking out 17 batters. With the win, Brazelton improves to 4-0 on the season and joins fellow Solar Sox teammate Aaron Rakers (BAL) as the only four game winners in the AFL.

The Solar Sox scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles from Brendan Harris (CHN), Adam Stern (ATL) and Richard Lewis (ATL).

For the game, Lewis led the Solar Sox at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Brazelton?s bid for a shutout was denied in the top of the fifth inning when Jason Stokes (FLA) hit a one out solo homer to deep left field to cut the lead to 3-1.

Saguaros relievers Cliff Bartosh (SD) and Leonard Dinardo (NYM) combined to throw four shutout innings in the game, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two.

Bausher is throwing the same way he did in Beloit. There were no mechanical changes or anything drastic. Like I said the kid always had the stuff he simply needed innings coming off the injury. His number arent bewildering at all if you just had looked at his stuff. No stat in the world will tell you a kid needs innings after an injury. Thats all I was trying to say all along.

Buddy, I know I never questioned his "stuff" but that is only so good if you can't throw it for strikes(i.e. Miller Park game and App-le-ton playoff game). He just CAN"T be throwing the same. Why? First of all, he is pitching against higher caliber players. Almost all of the players are far better than Jon Nelson(among league leader in K's) of the T-Rats who hit a grand slam bomb off of him that still hasn't fallen from the trees behind the outfield. Secondly, even if we allowed ourselves to think the competition is the same, his ERA in the fall league represents that of a prospect. At his age, his Midwest League ERA was that of a marginal STARTING pitcher. It is definitely possible he is throwing like some point and time in the past BEFORE the Midwest League, but not during it.

A total of 76 runs scored in three AFL games Tuesday -- just wild, wacky offense. Brad Nelson on base five times in six plate appearances in a monster game, Rickie Weeks on base four times despite just one hit -- Weeks leads his team with four HBP; David Krynzel's tough week continued, although he drove in a run...

Saguaros 19, Solar Sox 8

Solar Sox pitchers had a rough day on the mound as they walked 13 Peoria batters including five in the bottom of the third inning, and hit three in the game as the Saguaros trounced the Solar Sox 19-8 at the Peoria Sports Complex. In addition, both sides combined for seven errors in the game. Kelly Johnson (ATL) had a tough day in the field, committing two errors in the bottom of the fourth inning which set up a five run inning for the Saguaros.

David Wright (NYM), Brad Nelson (MIL) and Jason Bourgeois (TEX) each had three hits in the game and combined to drive in eight of the Saguaros? 19 runs. Solar Sox hitters Jayson Nix (COL), Delmon Young (TB) and Johnson each hit solo homers in the game.

Saguaros reliever Franklin Francisco (TEX) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory and raise his record to 3-1 for the season. Solar Sox starting pitcher Brett Evert (ATL) gave up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in two and one-third innings to take the loss.

I'm sorry if somebody covered this and I missed it, but what the hell is the deal with Weeks' HBPs? I don't have stats handy, but it seems like he's constantly getting plunked. It's risen to the freakish level of a serious on-base skill / injury risk. We're not talking about a Don Baylor-esque human tank here; Rickie just isn't that big a target. Does he hang all the way over the plate? Is he slow to get out of the way? Does he ever get p.o.'d about beanings? Eyewitnesses please reply.

Greg.

Yea, he does stand pretty close to the plate. I remember him getting hit in two consecutive at bats during a Snapper game this year. He took it well the first time, but had to be restrained the second time. Given his athleticism, I would find it hard to believe he has slow reactions. After all, the man has lightning quick hands. It's virtually impossible to have such hands and slow reaction time.

I know that there are a couple of folks that live in the AFL area (DHONKS), and I was wondering if anyone could get an interview with Bausher. I would imagine that it would be relatively easy, since as I understand it, there isn't great attendance there. I think that Bausher would be an interesting interview, maybe we can figure out what has turned it around for him. Just a thought...

Final Score....something like Scorpions 6, Sags 3. Now for the good news. Hendrickson started and worked 5.0 innings ( I think, maybe 6 though). He allowed 3 hits, no walks, and struck out maybe 4 or 5. The Scorps didn't come close on his curve, however this time around they were zeroing in on his heater, several times getting robbed on lined shots. The key is that he never got the ball up, so they never got any elevation on the ball. I've now seen two of Ben's last three starts (the two good ones), and he looks fantastic. He didn't seem to throw as hard tonight (last time I guessed around 94...tonight maybe the 2-seamer was probably consistently around 89-91), and his heater didn't have quite the movement (evident because they made better contact than the Rafters), bur his curve was much sharper. His mechanics look fantastic, he keeps the ball down, he pounds the zone with all his pitches, and he fields his position very well. What more is there to say?!! I've got to think the Brewers are thinking about giving Ben a serious look in spring training.

Then Bausher came in to relieve...I believe the 3rd time I've seen him. He also threw well, allowing the first Scorpion run on a single up the middle. Krynzel came up throwing and nearly nailed the runner who had started at second. David was lucky though, because his throw was too high to be cutoff, yet the hitter didn't move to second. Bausher went 2.0, gave up one run, struck out a few, and looked great again.

Unfortunately that's the end of the highlights. Krynzel got one hit that I saw (although I got there in the first and he was on 3rd base...I assumed a hit...so perhaps he had two). The one I saw was a sharp grounder through the hole which drew a comment from someone "look, the pitch found the bat." That was after his previous at bat when he struck out swinging on an upper 80's thigh high fastball over the heart of the plate. As noted before, David's setup probably keeps him from being a star. With a very upright posture, high hands, and open stance, he seems to have a tough time reacting in time to hit even mediocre fastballs. This seems to play into a note I made previously where I said his idea of plate discipline reminds me of Jenkins in that he often looks like he only takes pitches because he has decided in advance not to swing. I've seen Hardy, Weeks, NElson, and K. Johnson all look like they react to pitches, but David looks like he doesn't allow himself enough time to do so, so in order to get around on pitches he has to guess the pitch and decide to swing in advance. When he makes contact, he stings it though. David also got picked off of first, but in all fairness, the pitcher caught another guy the same inning (or maybe the next).

Nelson started in left, and he looked better.. I don't remember him reaching, but he hit a shot to right center that moved a runner to third allowing him to score one batter later.

Weeks looks great out there. I love his stance as it reminds me of Eric Young's (and maybe a bit like Ginter). It's a stance that seems to allow for quick hands to make contact, yet also helps provide some power. Like I said before, he reacts to pitches and is extremely selective. I believe he struck out twice, but both were on huge breaking balls, the second one was in the 9th off a Dbacks closer with an extremely tight curve/slurve that looks like a heater out of the hand.

Oh, and Kade Johnson sure looked great warming up Hendrickson between innings (had to include as many brewers guys as I could).

The score became lopsided because the Scorpions scored 5 times in the bottom of the 8th off a really short reliever.

Scorpions 6, Saguaros 3

The Scorpions sent nine men to the plate and rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth as they came from behind to defeat the Saguaros 6-3 in Scottsdale for their fifth consecutive victory. With the win, the Scorpions move back to .500 (11-11) and trail the first place Solar Sox by only three and a half games. Diamondbacks prospect Brandon Medders struck out the side in the ninth inning for his second save of the season.

Saguaros starting pitcher Ben Hendrickson (MIL) was in total command on the mound as he scattered only two hits and struck out seven in five innings of shutout ball.

Marlins prospect Josh Willingham gave the Saguaros a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Ramon Nivar (TEX). In his next at bat in the sixth inning, he took Scorpions reliever Kyle Edens (CIN) deep to give the Saguaros a 2-0 lead.

Ben with a 17:2 K/BB ratio? That's sick. He'll have a long career not walking guys and not giving up HRs in this day and age. Certainly looks like there might be some interesting spring training battle between Ben and Luis, heck I'm sure Nick will register some mention as a rotation candidate.

Maybe his hands are too fast for the AFL. Maybe Royce Clayton would be an All-star if we only had a league to match his abilities.

I was trying to contrast his stance to Krynzel's. I like how little movement both have, but it just seems that Rickie's puts him in much better position to both lay off pitches and turn on them. Just a rough day for Weeks. I didn't want us to draft him #2, but after seeing him I get excited more and more each time....even after 0-4 w/4K's.

It's been mentioned by a few scouts, DHonks, not just you. I just find it funny that we had this big article last year about how great RC hand speed was and now one of our top prospects is getting a lot of mention about hand speed. I just don't see where hand speed relates to success, especially with Royce Clayton as an example. Just something in my sick and twisted way that I think is funny.

Scorpions 8, Saguaros 1

Quiet news day -- Kade and Brad with 1-for-3 efforts...

Astros prospect Greg Powell scattered four hits and allowed only one run (unearned) in six innings as the Scorpions won their sixth consecutive game, defeating the Saguaros 8-1 at the Peoria Sports Complex. With the win, the Scorpions move past the Saguaros for second place in the American Division and trail the first place Solar Sox by three and one-half games.

The Scorpions got on the board in the top of the first inning when Dernell Stenson (CIN) drove in James Loney (LA) with a two out RBI single to center field. Loney and Stenson each had two hits in the game and collectively drove in two runs and scored three times.

The Saguaros scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Jake Gautreau?s (SD) RBI groundout scoring Justin Huber (NYM). Gautreau and J.J. Furmaniak (SD) each finished with two hits in the game.

Colin Porter (HOU) led all hitters at the plate with four hits in five at-bats. Dallas McPherson (ANA) also had a good day at the dish as he went 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Diamondback prospects Sergio Santos, Josh Kroeger and Chris Snyder combined to go 3-for-12 in the game with two runs scored. Pete Sikaras (AZ) pitched a scoreless ninth frame for the Scorpions.
