J.J. Hardy was 0-for-2 for Team USA Monday, now 4-for-21 in the early going (no walks).

Rickie Weeks getting on base at a .436 clip and is 4-for-4 in SB's.

David Krynzel's .318 BA is nice, but zero walks vs. 44 AB's is still troubling; 2-for-5 in SB attempts looks familiar as well, unfortunately.

Ben Hendrickson and Tim Bausher have been among the early AFL pitching stars.

Peoria Saguaros season-to-date numbers (including Brad Nelson, Kade Johnson, and John Novinsky as well):

Team USA 17, Saguaros 6

Team USA had ten extra base hits in the game and scored in each of the final seven innings en route to a 17-6 victory over the Saguaros at the Peoria Sports Complex. Blue Jays prospect Gabe Gross led the way for the Red, White and Blue going 3-for-5 with four runs scored.

The Saguaros sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a three run homer by Adrian Gonzalez (FLA) to deep right field. After the Gonzalez homer, the Saguaros scored the other two runs on four consecutive hits, driving in Josh Willingham (FLA) and David Wright (NYM). Team USA starter Adam Wainwright only lasted two-thirds of an inning pitched, yielding six hits and all five runs in the opening frame.

Team USA chipped away at the 5-0 deficit and took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Gerald Laird singled home Joe Mauer. In the seventh, the Americans send up nine men to the plate and scored four times to put the game out of reach. In the ninth, Jeremy Reed hit a two run homer to right to cap a five run ninth inning for Team USA, which again sent nine men to the dish.

John Van Benschoten pitched four scoreless innings for Team USA en route to his first victory of the season. Joselo Diaz (NYM) took the loss for the Saguaros.

David Krynzel on base two more times, including that walk I've been asking for http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif , but is now only 2-for-6 in SB attempts, as that part of his game continues to suffer in 2003. Kade Johnson on base three more times, as he continues to make the most of his backup role for the team. J.J. Hardy chipped in with two hits, one a double, and two RBI for Team USA. We'll try to find out from the Brewers if RHP John Novinsky has been "shut down" for the fall.

So were starting to creep towards that 60 PA mark for Krynzel everyone else has played less. I have advocated extreme caution with AFL numbers especialy for position players because it's a very offensive league due to conditions and the quality of the pitching. So to that end I tend to view it how I look at rookie league numbers, skills are more important than the OPS. His SB numbers are still not very good, but the one thing that is begginning to standout is his K-rate. Right now he's striking out once every 8 ABs, which is really quite good. A full season of 560 ABs is only a 70K season at that rate. This contrasts mightily with his rate in Huntsville of more than a K every 4 ABs. You can put caveats for pitcher quality and small sample size on that, but it's awfully hard not to think that atleast some of that difference is due to a real improvement. Put another way I submit that K rate for a batter is less sample size dependent that other things. Much of the luck affect we see in sample size is variation in the rate that balls in play fall for hits, not at the rate they are put into play.

The Brewers have provided us with info on RHP John Novinsky (DeJean trade with St. Louis) based on our inquiry. Thanks again to the folks in the offices there:

He's a taxi squad guy meaning he is only available to pitch on Wed/Sat. unless an injury to another player would necessitate him pitching on another day. He has had some back soreness - skipped a couple of outings as precautionary, also was not needed.

Javelinas 6, Team USA 1

In this one, J.J. Hardy went 1-for-4 and was caught stealing. J.J.'s at .226 (7-for-31 with a .226 OBP as well -- no walks) in the still-small sample.

Saguaros 9, Rafters 6

Chris Aguila (FLA), Jason Bourgeois (TEX), Mike Jacobs (NYM) and Jon Knott (SD) led the Saguaros to a 9-6 win over the Rafters in Scottsdale. Aguila, Bourgeois, Jacobs and Knott combined for eight of the Saguaros 12 hits.

The Saguaros got on the board in the second inning when Marlins prospect Jason Stokes led off with a triple and scored on single by Josh Willingham (FLA). Knott followed with a two run homerun. Brewers prospect Rickie Weeks reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a single by Bourgeois. Weeks scored from third base on a pick off attempt to first base by the Rafters to give the Saguaros a 4-0 lead.

Yankees prospect Michael Vento scored first for the Rafters. Vento led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a double off the padding off the centerfield wall by Rob Bowen (MIN).

The Rafters continued to chip away at the Saguaros lead in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Rafters added five runs off a triple by Nook Logan (DET), a triple by Jamie Athas (SF), and a home run by Vento. The Rafters trailed the Saguaros by one run at the end of seven innings.

The Saguaros pulled away from the Rafters in the top of the ninth when they added two runs by Weeks and Aguila.

In their final comeback attempt, the Rafters fell short as they left the bases loaded to end the game.

Logan and Vento led the Rafters offense combining to hit for the cycle. Pitcher Mark Woodyard (DET) took the loss for the Rafters.

For the Saguaros, Cliff Bartosh (SD) was credited with the win and Lincoln Holdzkom (FLA) notched the save.

Rickie Weeks continues to get on base at a lethal pace, even when the hits aren't dropping; tough size 5 collar for Brad Nelson, to borrow a Jim Powell phrase; John Novinsky returned to the mound, still trying to have a scoreless outing; Ben Hendrickson makes another start on Thursday...

Right now he's striking out once every 8 ABs, which is really quite good. A full season of 560 ABs is only a 70K season at that rate. This contrasts mightily with his rate in Huntsville of more than a K every 4 ABs.

It seems pretty obvious to me that for Krynzel, walks mean strike outs. He's not striking out much in the AFL, but he's not walking at all. When his walk totals have risen in the past, so has his K rate. To take walks, you have to work deep in the count. Obviously, he's more prone to K when he's taken more pitches.

So I think he has an important decision to make. He can either be a high strike out/high walk kind of guy like Adam Dunn, or he can go up there and hack at every first pitch and become known as a good contact hitter, like Eric Young. I'm not sure which is better in his case.

Rickie's walks have left me impressed with his discipline thus far. He didn't have a hit, yet walked twice and scored both times, that shows a lot of maturity for an A-baller, and should be an encouraging sign for us fans.

And what's wrong with Nelson? Is that injury still nagging him or is this just a nasty cold streak?

I can't imagine an injury that would screw up the subtleties of hitting more than a severe wrist injury akin to Nelson's. We have hope in how Nick Johnson bounced back after, for a time, slumping badly, but with that we'd have to take the dread that accompanies Nick Johnson's wrist-injury-recurrence-factor (WIRF).

Team USA 11, Solar Sox 3

This was Team USA's final game within the AFL season. J.J. Hardy went 0-for-1, and finishes at .219 in 32 AB's..

Team USA's final AFL numbers, including J.J.'s:

www.baseballamerica.com/t..._787.shtml

Rafters 7, Saguaros 3

Only rough outing for Ben thus far; Rickie continues to shine...

The Rafters scored four runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by Jake Mauer (MIN), Michael Vento (NYY) and Terry Tiffee (MIN) and never looked back as the Rafters beat the Saguaros 7-3 in Peoria.

Yankees prospect Ramon Ramirez (NYY) pitched five strong innings, allowed six hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out four to pick up his first victory as a Rafter. Ben Hendrickson (MIL) was tagged for six runs (five earned) and ten hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched and took the loss.

One bright spot for the Rafters in the game was the relief pitching as Leonard Dinardo (NYM) and Franklin Francisco (TEX) combined to throw four and one-third innings without allowing a hit.

Nook Logan (DET), Skip Schumaker (STL), Tiffee and Mauer led the way for the Rafters as they hit a combined .529 (9-for-17) and drove in four runs in the game.

Saguaros 3, Desert Dogs 2

Closer, starter, middle reliever, it doesn't matter. In a variety of those roles covering seven "lights-out" appearances thus far, RHP Tim Bausher has been, perhaps rightly so, one of the talks of the entire league -- wow...

The Saguaros scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning on Chris Aguila's (FLA) solo blast and David Wright's (NYM) double driving in Adrian Gonzalez (FLA) and Josh Willingham (FLA) as the Saguaros beat the Desert Dogs 3-2 at the Peoria Sports Complex.

The Desert Dogs ended the shutout in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI groundout by Rodney Choy Foo (CLE) scoring fellow Tribe teammate Corey Smith. Smith led all hitters in the game, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored. One inning later, J.R. House (PIT) made in a 3-2 game on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Rich Thompson (PIT).

Saguaros reliever Tim Bausher (MIL) allowed only two hits in three shutout innings to pick up his second victory of the season. Matt Hampton (SD) pitched the final one and one-thirds innings and struck out three while allowing only one hit to earn the save. Red Sox knuckle-balling prospect Charlie Zink allowed three runs in three and two-thirds innings pitched to pick up the loss.

Desert Dogs 5, Saguaros 4, 10 innings

Rickie Weeks is Superman -- no Halloween costume necessary; Monday's game audio to be available via mlb.com...

J.T. Stotts? RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning driving in pinch-runner Freddie Bynum (OAK) gave the Desert Dogs a 5-4 victory in Mesa.

Stotts led the Desert Dog attack as he went four-for-five with two RBI?s.

In a game that featured a total of 20 hits between both clubs, only three hits went for extra bases. The game?s only homer came in the top of the seventh inning when Saguaros DH Mike Jacobs (NYM) broke a 3-3 tie with a solo homer into the right field bullpen. In the bottom of the frame, the Desert Dogs tied it at four apiece when Nick Swisher (OAK) scored on a RBI groundout by Tribe prospect Corey Smith.

Desert Dog relievers Bobby Korecky (PHI), Matthew Squires (PHI) and Bryan Hebson (BOS) combined to throw five no-hit innings while striking out six Javelinas.

Several former Brewers, but no current members of the organization, are toiling in the Venezuelan winter league, which is underway.

The Brewers' Francicso Campos has made two fine starts for Mazatlan in the Mexican winter league. He's the only Brewer property working in Mexico. Now 31, he's just a curioisity at this point:

The Dominican winter league begins play later this week. Rosters have yet to be released.

We know Corey Hart's playing winter ball in Puerto Rico this year. That's usually the last of the winter leagues to begin, likely within two weeks, though. We'll keep an eye out on the Dominican and Puerto Rican rosters when released.
