Plenty of offense in the early going for the 71 folks in attendance...

Saguaros 8, Javelinas 6

Dave Krynzel (MIL) and Ramon Nivar (TEX) hit back-to-back homers and combined to go 6-for-10 at the plate with five RBI?s as the Saguaros beat the Javelinas 8-6 in Peoria. With the victory, the Saguaros remain a game behind the Solar Sox in the American Division.

The turning point in the game came in the top of the ninth inning with the score tied at six apiece. With one out, Nivar singled and stole second with Rickie Weeks (MIL) at the plate. As the throw from Michael Tonis (KC) sailed into the outfield, Nivar went to third base. After Weeks struck out for the second out of the inning, the Javelinas intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez (TEX). Chris Aguila (FLA) singled to drive in Nivar to break the tie and give the Saguaros a 7-6 lead. The Saguaros added an insurance run when David Wright (NYM) drove in Gonzalez with an RBI single.

Padres prospect Matt Hampton picked up the victory in relief for the Saguaros as he pitched 2 1/3 no hit innings and struck out four.

Krynzel halves his HR total from the 2003 Southern League season (he had two). Weeks now has two errors in four games at 2B and one in two games at SS. Brad Nelson's double was his first extra-base hit (now 5-for-24). Neither Krynzel nor Nelson have walked in a combined 55 AB's. J.J. Hardy came in late in Team USA's 6-2 win on Tuesday and went 0-for-2. He's 2-for-11 with zero walks thus far. The Saguaros face Hardy's Team USA Wednesday afternoon - MassBrew

I was somewhat surprised by the fact that a manager in an AFL game would intentionally walk someone with two outs. As I mentioned earlier this week, I have never been to an AFL game. I guess I just assumed the manager's main responsibilities were to make sure everyone got work and provide the players with some decent instruction. I thought winning kind of took a backseat to development. In that type of atmosphere, I would think you would want to test the metal of your pitcher against a good hitter. In comparison to a "normal" game, can somehow tell me how much of a part strategy plays in an AFL game?

My guess is that the managers see this as an opportunity for themselves to make impressions. A healthy win-loss record always looks good for a manager trying to find his first big league break.

Also, if it's considered to be a "finishing school" for prospects on the cusp of the Majors, they might as well play it as close to Major League style as possible.

This is all just speculation, though. I'm certainly no insider to the AFL.

well, decided that I would brave the 95-degree heat and take in the game. Three Brewers players played today in a game pitting Team USA vs the Maryvale Saguaros, with the Sags featuring a lineup heavy in Padres and Marlins (all 5 IF spots, LF, and a couple pitchers).

The final score was 11-4, Team USA. The Sags failed to register a hit until the 4th inning, I think, and the score would be worse if not for a 3 run 7th.

JJ Hardy started at SS and hit ninth, going 2-5 at the plate with 2 sharp singles, 2 RBI. His outs featured a sharp liner to left that seemed amazing he even made contact. He also hit a FC weak grounder to third that should have been a DP had it not been for a great slide into second to break it up. His final out was on a solidly struck chopper over the bag at second that the SS made a great play on. Hardy also made a spectacular play early in the game to range up the middle. He fielded the ball slightly on the 1st base side of 2nd (but deeper than the bag), set, spun and threw a strike to first. The boxscore will show that he made an error, but that's only because a grounder that had routine 6-3 DP written all over it cause the lip of the grass and hit JJ in the neck. He also showed questionable judgement on another grounder (off the bat of Krynzel) which he probably should have fielded, touched the bag and fired to first. But by flipping it to the second baseman, he allowed the speedy Krynzel to almost beat it out (I was shocked when the ump called David out...looked safe by a step...not that close).

My first impression of Hardy is that he's for real. He has a classic batting stance, somewhat reminiscent of Jeff Cirillo in that he crouches a bit, with the bat very still. He took a lot of pitches and fouled off some tough ones. He pulled some and knocked some the other way. All in all, he's looked like an amazing 9th hitter. He hits the ball on a line and gets ontop of others. Seems to me he's a guy who will hit singles to all fields and will find lots of holes on sharply hit grounders. He didn't display any power, but that can be because of two things I saw. First of all, he didn't get lift on balls, but the singles, a lineout, and several fouls were rockets indicating great bat speed. He also looks very small out there. Not in terms of height, but in terms of muscles. Hardy looks like a 17 year old in a uniform, and his forearms had to be only 1/2 the thickness of even Krynzel! His defense looks very good because of an accurate arm, great jumps, and outstanding footwork. It is obvious to the untrained eye that he has a rare feel for the nuances and intricacies of the shortstop position as he always was in the right place. His arm doesn't look all that strong, but like I said, his footwork, positioning, and accuracy will take him far as his arm continues to mature. One final thing to note...after one out, he was holding his left shoulder, but stayed in the game. Perhaps he tweaked it on the swing, but it appeared to be nothing serious.

Next up was David Krynzel. He batted leadoff and DH'ed for the Saguaros. Unlike Hardy who showed a knack for reacting to pitches, David appeared to only take pitches when he decided he would in advance. That kind of reminded me of Bill Hall as he seems to often show body language indicating he had decided beforehand not to swing. Of course, maybe he's so confident in his ability that maybe that's how he wants to work the count....take pitches until he has a strike on him (how I hit back in little league....but a totally different level). He took several pitches right down the middle.

David led off the game by getting hit in the back by the first pitch from a team USA pitcher. On the next pitch he was running as the hitter layed down a bunt. I would bet David was going to steal second successfully without the sacrifice occuring.

Going back a few posts, I mentioned my buddy's observations about Krynzel. Well, here's what I saw. If I had to compare his stance to a current big leaguer, it would be Craig Counsell. Another one that came to mind was Brady Anderson. The keys to the comparisons were that David stands kind of upright and holds his bat vertically, not at more of a 45-degree angle.

David then proceeded to go 0-4 on the day, with two high flyouts, the aforementioned DP (should have been FC), and a groundout to third. He sure can fly. What really seems to limit him is his stance. Anyone who plays golf knows that the most important part of the swing is the setup, especially posture. If you don't give yourself a chance to succeed, you can't. It would seem that analogy works well here for David. He doesn't appear to get his legs or hips into his swing. Instead he relies solely on his hands and arms to both make contact and generate power, and it seems that his setup doesn't help. I'm sure when he's on, he hits lots of things, but his setup and swing could be the reason for his prolonged slumps and high strikeout totals. Like I've said though, I am as far from a scout as can be, so feel free to take my analysis lightly. He's still one of my favorite prospects, just I realize he's not as ready as I thought. One can easily imagine his stance making it hard to hit breaking balls in the dirt or any fastball, kind of like how Jenkins tends to struggle (he also holds his bat kind of high, but quick hands can compensate when swinging well). I liked how he got on top of balls the last time I saw him, so we'll see what happens when I get a third impression. Oh, and one more thing...his first plate appearance he was hit by the 1st pitch. His second AB he hit a high flyout to short center on the 1st pitch. And he popped to second on the 3rd pitch of his 3rd AB. In only 1 at bat did he see more than 3 pitches---his 4th--when he saw 6. I believe in his 5 PA's,he saw a total of 14 pitches...kind of scary. I think Hardy averaged about 5 per plate appearance.

The final Brewer to play was Kade Johnson. He came in sometime around the 5th inning and caught. Before batting, what impressed me was his constant activity. Even on grounders to third, he hustled down the line and backed up first. I'm sure it's expected of guys to do this, but his hustle and positioning stood out.

I liked his stance a lot. Not quite like Bagwell's crouch, but he has a very wide, powerful stance. Interestingly enough, his eye seemed more advanced than Krynzel's as he seemed to react to pitches more like Hardy, whereas I said that David seemed to almost decide in advance whether or not to swing. Kade fell behind 0-2, then worked for a walk by fouling off some pitches. He also was hit in the hand, reaching base twice. On one pitch he turned on it and appeared to sneak it over the bag and past a diving 3b, but it was called foul....surely would have been a double if fair (I still want to know what constitutes a fair ball, as many over the 3b bag are often called foul).

The other notes I have are for players I think will be legit. The two the stood out play for Team USA....outfielder JJ Davis and 1b Graham Koonce. Watching these guys swing the bat was a pleasure as they seem to have a very advanced knowledge of hitting. If we deal Sexson, acquiring Koonce from the As would be a huge priority for me. It's scary how in command he appears at the plate. Davis just hit nothing weekly....I almost strained my neck a few times trying to follow the ball flying off his bat. Not sure of Koonce's status, but didn't he win the PCL triple crown after being acquired as a 6yr minor league free agent?

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask

David mocks foamboy.....foamboy is no insider in AFL activity, but trys hard to learn from those who are, including you, David. Foamboy does go to Scottsdale about once a month, and is planning on visiting a couple of games over Halloween weekend if anyone is around. I need to check out this AFL league, since I have not previously done so.

As it relates to Milwaukee, and particularly sports in Milwaukee, foamboy would be considered an insider by almost anybody you ask.

I'm just teasing you, David. I'm not being an as*, but was just trying to help. I know what's going on...so much so that I can't tell you half of what I know.

DHonks....thanks again for the great recon work....your effort is greatly appreciated.

No problem foamboy, I'm taking the piss out of you too. I can usually take it, but if I'm dishing it out too much then call me on it. I don't mind a little back and forth, although I'm still smarting from my disagreement with scoop and his clear argument that Jenkins and not Sexson is the best Brewers player. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Team USA 11, Saguaros 4

J.J. Davis went four-for-five with four RBI?s as Team USA won its fourth straight game, defeating the Saguaros 11-4 in Peoria. Adam Wainwright pitched three innings in relief to earn the victory for Team USA. Saguaros starting pitcher Matt Peterson (NYM) took the loss as he gave up five runs (four earned) in two innings pitched.

Team USA scored four runs in the top of the first inning on a two run homer by Graham Koonce and a two out double by Davis scoring Ernie Young and Garrett Atkins. In the second inning, Team USA tacked on another run on an unearned run scoring J.J. Hardy. One inning later, Davis scored the sixth Team USA run on back-to-back singles from Gerald Laird and Hardy. In the fourth inning, Gabe Gross hit a two out solo homer to deep right field to give Team USA a 7-0 lead. Team USA added a pair of runs each in the seventh and ninth innings to win their fourth consecutive game.

The Saguaros got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on a one out triple to right by Rico Washington (SD) driving in Jason Stokes (FLA). In the eighth inning, they added three runs on a double by Jon Knott (SD), a sacrifice fly by Jason Stokes (FLA) and a single to center by Washington.

I had a fun moment there, before I realized that someone had just forgotten to boldface "K. Johnson" after "HBP," when I had come to the disturbing conclusion that the only way Kade could have scored his run was that the Saguros had put him in as a pinch runner for the shortstop.

Sags lose, 4-3.. Hendrickson started and looked great. I can't recall him walking a man. He went 5.0 innings allowing 4 hits (one double was hit sharply but was just inches below the 1st baseman's glove...almost an out). Lots of K's. He surprised me, because I expected him to throw lots of curves. Instead I'd say he mainly utilized a hard fastball with great movement (deadly combination, as guys rarely made solid contact). He has two speeds of curves plus I believe a changeup. He froze some guys with both curves...one is like a Sheets' curve in that it's in the 80's, the other is slower. The only run allowed came as a result of a Rickie Weeks throwing error from SS.

I'll stick with Rickie here. He started at SS and looked iffy. Just watching him take warmups one can instantly tell he is a superior athlete and has a superior arm to JJ Hardy (after seeing him yesterday). Whereas JJ relied on footwork to make throws, Rickie effortlessly threw rockets to first with poor footwork and a contorted body. He committed two errors, one fielding and one throwing, resulting in all 4 runs. He also took his time on some that made the plays look too close. At the plate, I believe he went 1-5 with a chopper to the hole that he beat out. He then scored from second on a single which got the crowd on it's feet because of how he created the run. It appeared there was no way he should have scored, but he hustled and he had a great slide. Weeks also hit a deep fly to center where the sign says it is something like 430, and he hit it to the track.

Krynzel singled by tomahawking a 2-2 pitch that was over his head to center. He then was caught stealing...not sure how. He had a great jump and was flying. Is the Yankees catcher that good? His slide didn't look great, as most great basestealers don't choose to slide footfirst. If he goes headfirst, he easily avoids the tag, because the only reason he was out was due to his foot being slightly above the bag (so too high) as he came in. DAvid hit a great sac fly to score Nelson and give the Sags an early 2-0 lead. It was to the wall in right. Krynzel looked great as usual in the field.

NElson started and played in left. He walked in his first appearance, and took some mighty hacks, but failed to register a hit. Defensively he gets good jumps and has a good arm, but his range seems very limited.

Question: do the Brewers instruct all their minor leaguers to slide feet-first all the time in order to avoid injury? (didn't help Charlie Fermaint in Arizona or Lou Palmisano in Helena)...for the Huntsville guys, was David feet-first throughout his 2003 season?

apparently not, cause when Weeks scored he not only slid head first, but he came in so hard that his left arm undercut the catcher making him fall down. It shocked me because he was playing so recklessly...while it can look fun, it didn't seem appropriate in a Fall League game. Shows he's a gamer though, because he did whatever it took to score. I'd never before seen a guy reach for the plate and take out the catcher with his forearm in the process.

Ben Hendrickson started out hot and hasn't let up since arriving in Arizona; J.J. Hardy did not play in Team USA's game Thurdasy...

Rafters 4, Saguaros 3

Three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Rafters breathing room as they beat the Saguaros 4-3 in Scottsdale.

The Saguaros got on the board in the first inning when Mets prospect David Wright hit a solo shot into right center field. They added a run in the third off the bat of Dave Krynzel (MIL) whose sac fly drove in Milwaukee teammate Brad Nelson.

Lance Niekro (SF) scored the first run for the Rafters in the fifth when an error by Rickie Weeks (MIL) allowed Ferdin Tejada (NYY) to reach first base safely. The Rafters trailed the Saguaros 2-1 until the seventh inning when the Rafters were able to capitalize on Saguaros mistakes.

With Michel Hernandez (NYY) and Tejada on base, Jake Mauer (MIN) stepped to the plate and hit a ground ball to Weeks who misplayed it allowing Mauer to reach first to load the bases. Detroit prospect Nook Logan was patient at the plate and earned a walk that scored Hernandez to tie the game 2-2. Shaun Boyd (STL) followed with a two run single to give the Rafters a 4-2 lead.

The Saguaros made one last push in the ninth when Weeks reached base on a single and was then thrown out at second on a hit by Wright. Texas prospect Adrian Gonzalez followed with a walk. Josh Willingham (FLA) drove in Weeks with a single for the Saguaros last run of the game. Willingham had two of the Saguaros six hits. (Well, that last paragraph from mlb.com just doesn't follow correctly, whatever -- MassBrew)

With Hendrickson lights out, is it possible he could break camp with the Brewers next spring? I guess it's a little early to speculate, but I would think if he could couple this showing with a strong spring training, he'd fit into the Brewers' staff somewhere. Which I'd be all for, as long as we don't pull a Torborg on him.

The only youngsters I see getting a "real" shot would be Hardy, and possibly Martinez, though I'm sure most would like to see Martinez get at least another half season in AAA. Also, Hart may get an outside shot at 1st base when Sexson is traded, if we don't get someone back in a trade or FA to man that spot, though that's unlikely.

Anyone else, I think would have to absolutely dominate in spring training and blow away the coaching staff to make the team. Weeks needs a ton of work on his D, Hendrickson needs more time, and Krynzel needs to be more consistent. His base stealing needs a lot of work also. 65% is not good enough to justify 70 attempts.

Any word on why Weeks was playing SS?]

Why not have him play SS? my first thought is that the 2b is a priority guy. My second thought is that since Weeks appears to be playing the Utility role, he's gonna play 2b and SS.

Weeks has all the ability in the world. His arm looks great. If he was to work on fielding, throwing, and footwork, he could be a tremendous SS. Assuming Hardy opens at SS in 2004, I'd almost rather see Weeks play SS so that he can learn to be more of a field leader. He'll better learn when to throw the ball, eat the ball, etc etc. Plus, footwork is much more necessary at SS than 2b, so I think it would benefit him in the long run.

Even with the current roster, I am looking forward to spring training. Why? I am interested to see if players like Weeks, Hardy, Martinez, Krynzel, Hendrickson, etc. get a "real" shot to make the club.

Spring training is a small sample and often against other teams AAA, AA and even A ball players. Even if some do well, I'd like to see them in AAA until June to see if they're truly ready and to reduce the chance they'll be super-twos. I don't want to see the Brewers slip record-wise next year and would be really happy with another 10-12 win improvement but in the big picture 2004 doesn't mean much. I can wait till June. Luis may be a possible exception since he's had AAA time already.

RHP Tim Bausher actually got the start for the Saguaros on Friday, allowing five base runners and a wild pitch in his two innings of work, but limiting the damage to just one run (the first he's allowed in 6.2 IP). We haven't seen John Novinsky in a while after three ineffective appearances thus far. Days off will continue for Rickie Weeks and David Krynzel as the team is idle until Monday.

Brad Nelson and Kade Johnson combine to go 0-for-5 with four K's, although Brad scored after a HBP. In 172 AB's since leaving High Desert for Huntsville, Nelson is hitting .203. Brad's Huntsville OPS was .589. His OPS in 29 AFL AB's is .433, and he's struck out in 10 of 31 plate appearances. We'll see if his bat comes alive should he be protected by Weeks and Prince Fielder in a probable 2004 Huntsville lineup.

Team USA won their sixth straight (now 6-1); no box score available, and J.J. Hardy wasn't mentioned in the recap of the 11-1 victory. Team USA does play again on Saturday.
