The Official Brewerfan Arizona Fall League Thread

MassBrew

Season begins September 30th. You'll find all the box scores and Brewer news within this thread. If possible, please include any future AFL discussion within this thread as well (easier for eventual archiving).

Although the AFL has been around since 1992, general managers started to make better use of it and featured more top prospects in the late 90's. Sometimes it's fun to go back and look at some of the past teams -- Top Prospect Alert does a nice recap each year:

1999 - Robinson Cancel © didn't get to play a lot on his AFL team because of being behind Mitch Meluskey, but hit well when he played (.303, .455, .361). He doesn't hit a lot of homeruns, but has nice line drive power and a pretty swing. His minor league batting averages have generally been good, but he really excelled after being promoted to AAA in '99, hitting .368 for Louisville. With Nilsson not coming back to the Brewers, Cancel could get a good shot in spring training .......... I previously wrote about how much I liked Chad Green's (OF) hell-bent style of play, and I think he acquitted himself well in the AFL. After a real mediocre season in AA, threatening to drop Green out of prospect status, he came back in the fall to hit .291 with five homers and six stolen bases. He's got a lot of intangibles, too, kind of like Lenny Dykstra in his prime. But he's got to avoid injuries to even have an outside shot at ever making it .......... Bucky Jacobsen (OF/1B) is another Brewer coming off a poor minor league season, but he really turned it around offensively in Arizona (.329, .624, .400). He's slow and not much of an outfielder. Also, he's already 24, and his only AA experience was a disaster. It's hard to tell if he'll have any kind of chance at the majors ........... Josh Klimek (3B/1B) --- .239 at AA + .174 in the AFL = roster filler with not much chance to advance ........... Valerio de los Santos (RP), who had such promise after a strong '98 season, was injured for much of '99. I didn't have a chance to see him in the AFL, but his numbers weren't good (6.98 ERA, .333 OBA). He was probably here to just get in a few extra innings, so his AFL performance isn't indicative of his potential. Besides, I just love that name, and the way it rolls off the tongue .......... Brian Passini (SP/RP) was good at AA and terrible at AAA in '99. Every time I saw him in the AFL, he got lit up. But he finished with a 4.29 ERA, so he must have had at least a few good outings. Passini's a big, hard throwing lefty, so probably still worth watching.

1999 bonus (Astros): Keith Ginter (2B) is one of those "low tools, high production" kind of guys. Despite playing only part-time, he led his AFL team with 10 doubles, and posted strong offensive numbers (.306, .459, .433). He's only played a few games above class A, so he still might have a career

2000: Nick Neugebauer (SP) came into the 2000 season ranked as Milwaukee's number one prospect despite limited pro experience. I saw nothing in his AFL performance to indicate that he's not a future #1 or #2 starter in Milwaukee's rotation. His fastball touches into the high 90s, while his curve ball was better than advertised. His final AFL ERA of 5.14 was skewed by a bad performance on the last day of the season and his other numbers weren't exceptional, but that doesn't stop me from declaring Neugebauer as one of the top pitchers in the AFL this season. This is one time when you need to ignore the stats and go on impression. There were at least two games in which he "no hit" the opponents during his portion of the game, so he showed his ability to dominate a game when he's on. I'll look forward to seeing Neugebauer pitch for the Brewers in spring training next season ....... Local high school and college product Mark Ernster (INF) came to the AFL with unimpressive minor league numbers in his two pro seasons since leaving ASU, but hit well for Maryvale while playing mostly at shortstop. Especially impressive was his total of five triples (tying teammate Donzell McDonald for the league lead) on his way to a slugging percentage of .505 to go with a .343 OBP. Ernster has probably been targeted a a potential utility infielder, and a strong AA season in 2001 will keep him moving up the ladder ....... Scott Kirby (OF/1B) has had a roller coaster minor league career, and his AFL season was a microcosm of the same. He hit well in spells, finishing with passable numbers (.265/.362/.398). His walk total of 17 was good, but he struck out too much (28 Ks in 113 ABs). He may need to repeat AA and improve on his 2000 stats ....... Brian Moon © was a part-time catcher who showed occasional line drive power, but he's still pretty much a singles hitter who strikes out too much (17 Ks in 64 ABs). His final numbers were OK for a backup, but it's questionable whether he's a major league prospect ....... Jose Garcia (SP/RP) missed all of the 1999 season to injury, but made up for lost time in 2000 with a nice AA season and a respectable fall league showing (3.75 ERA, 23 Ks in 24 IPs). He needs to cut down on his walks, although he shows decent command.

2000 bonus (Astros): Keith Ginter (2B) returned to the AFL after a breakout season in AA. But that success didn't carry over to his second fall season, as he hit only .219/.337/.397. I still regard him as a potential utility man instead of a major league regular, but let's see how he does in AAA.

2001: Bill Hall (SS) attracted a lot of positive attention for his skills and athleticism. Despite playing only part of 2001 above class A, Hall was not overmatched in Arizona, hitting .291/.342/.478 with four homers. He made 10 errors in his 33 games at shortstop, but those totals usually go down as young shortstops gain more experience ... Jeff Deardorff (OF) showed a lot of power (five HRs in 66 ABs, .530 SLP), but his plate discipline was terrible (23-1 K/BB ratio). The right-handed hitter was one of the stars for Team USA in the World Cup tournament. He'll need to learn to lay off bad pitches as he advances past AA ball ... Matt Childers (P) had an impressive Fall, with a 3.19 ERA, .244 OBA, 1.13 WHIP and a very good 19-3 K/BB ratio ... Brian Mallette (P) worked as a closer for his Maryvale team with decent success. His ERA of 3.79 was good and he struck out 21 batters in 19 IPs ... Matt Parker (P) was making the jump from class A and had trouble with AFL batters (.365 OBA, 10.89 ERA) ... Paul Stewart (P) also got hit hard (.347), but was a little more successful than Parker at keeping runners from scoring (4.76 ERA).

2002: The team with one of the worst records in baseball in 2002 has at least a few bright prospects coming through their system. Milwaukee sent both of their potential future shortstops to the AFL, and it was clear who is the better prospect ... Bill Hall (SS) took a big step backwards after a strong 2001 season. He didn't play well in AAA nor did he do much in his second AFL year after coming to Arizona midway through the fall season, hitting .175 with only one extra base hit in 57 ABs . His ability to play shortstop at the major league level has also been questioned ... The younger J.J. Hardy (SS), who reached AA in July, showed much more potential than Hall. While hitting only .221 in 68 AFL ABs, Hardy smacked a couple of homeruns. He has nice bat control and a good swing. He's also a better defensive player and, at 20, is three years younger than Hall ... Corey Hart (3B/1B) was Milwaukee's best player in the AFL; he hit .275/.327/.443 with 10 doubles, three triples and three homers in 149 ABs. The lanky corner infielder also stole five bases. He's got a nice stroke and can go to all fields, but needs to cut down on the strikeouts (46 Ks in 149 ABs). It's uncertain whether Hart, who played most of 2002 in high Class A, can play third base at the major league level. With Richie Sexson entrenched at first base, perhaps a move to the outfield is in Hart's future ... Dave Krynzel (OF), one of Milwaukee's top-ranked prospects, played well in limited time, batting .361/.452/.500 in 36 ABs. The left-handed hitter brings a nice combo of gap power and speed to the game. There's no reason to think Krynzel won't be Milwaukee's starting center fielder by 2004, perhaps even sooner ... Mike Adams (P) jumped three levels for the Brewers in 2002, pitching well out of the bullpen for both A teams and Class AA Huntsville. He continued his solid work in the AFL, pitching 17 strong innings (2.65 ERA, .254 OBA, 21-8 K/BB ratio). At 24, Adams needs to keep moving quickly through the system. As a non-drafted player, he could be a sleeper ... Ryan Miller (P) came in late as a replacement for Matt Childers and pitched well, with only one shaky outing. The right-hander struck out 12 in 10.2 IPs. Control was an issue for Miller, as he walked nine batters. He will be 25 next spring ... David Pember (P) received a call-up to Milwaukee after a strong AA season, but something wasn't working for him in the AFL. In five starts, he recorded a 12.89 ERA and a .451 OBA. This is a very small sampling, so there's no need to panic yet.

The Arizona Fall League season opens today, Tuesday, September 30th. Huntsville manager Frank Kremblas is the manager; former Brewer legend Rob Deer the batting coach.

The Brewers representing the Peoria Saguaros (it's a cactus) are:

RHP Ben Hendrickson, age 22

RHP Tim Bausher, age 24

2B Rickie Weeks, age 21

OF David Krynzel, age 21

OF Brad Nelson, age 20

C Kade Johnson, age 25

Krynzel (November) and Nelson (December) have birthdays remaining in 2003.

The Saguaros are made up of Brewers, Mets, Padres, Marlins and Rangers prospects. Met catcher Justin Huber, Ranger OF Ramon Nivar, and Marlin 1B Jason Stokes are among the bigger "name" players on the team.

Peoria roster:

mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/ml...r_saguaros

Select day games will be broadcast on mlb.com, but not until well into the season, beginning October 27th. The season runs through November 15th.

Peoria is at Scottsdale in a night game tonight. We'll post each day's box score within this thread, along with other AFL news pertaining to the Brewer kids.

Team USA, of which SS J.J. Hardy is a member, plays a limited AFL schedule beginning on October 10th. There are two opportunities for a Ben Hendrickson vs. J. J. Hardy match-up, on October 15th and 21st. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I brought this up on another thread and never got an answer. I was just curious if someone knew the "inner-workings" of the AFL. For instance, why are we playing with the organizations we are playing with this year that are different from last year? How is it decided which organization sends a catcher while another a shortstop? Is there a "bidding process" for positions, much like a draft? Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. I hate to wish or hope ill-will on any of our players, but I can't help but think that both Bausher and Johnson are going to be WAY over their heads in this league. Neither excelled in their league when everyone wasn't a prospect. Bausher can be somewhat justified in that if you could get him to control his secondary pitches, he MIGHT have a chance. But, Kade Johnson who drew comparisons to Mike Kremblas. Please.

Well, last night I got some answers from some people who work in the league that I know.

The organizations rotate on a yearly basis. Some are the same, some are different.

The allocations of players are decided when scouting directors get together for a pow wow.

There is a priority player tag that scouting directors can place. the way I understand it, last year Krynzel had a minor injury, but left the league more because he was angry that he wasn't playing even though he had performed better than the other OFs....I guess they were priority players. I believe our priority was SS w/Hall and Hardy.

I'll be at the game tonight, so I'll let everyone know what I see. I was told by my friend that on the last roster he had seen (maybe 10 days old), the Saguaros squad didn't have Krynzel on the roster, but it did have Hart, something none of us had heard of. So with David dropping out of the Team USA program, he must have replaced Hart.

I still find it humorous (and almost bordelrine disturbing) that Rob Deer is the batting coach. This is a man who turned the K into an artform and also the man who, after being traded to the Tigers (or was he released?), said, "I didn't like the approach in Milwaukee. All they wanted was for us to hit singles. Too much punch and judy".....or something to that effect.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Deer is listed as the Bench Coach, not the Batting Coach. Then again, there's no bench coach listed, so I don't know if this means anything or makes you feel any better.

When it comes to batting approaches, I'd take Rod Carew over Rob Deer any day, but given Carew's short tenure, I'd probably try out Deer before Carew again as a coach. Just saying that performance doesn't always correlate to coaching style.

It was a beautiful 85 degree night in Scottsdale as probably 200 fans settled in to watch a great game. In an unusual score for the AFL, the Saguaros won 1-0. Krynzel started and saw four plate appearances. He batted second. He flied out to left, struck out on an extremely hard fastball up and away (everyone, except the lefties that finished the game, was throwing gas). In his final two AB's he got on top of pitches and hit a sharp liner to left and a solid liner to center, resulting in 2 singles. The team had 8 hits I believe, w/David getting 2 of them. He didn't have many balls come his way thanks to his team's dominant pitching, but he did look good on the one or two. He worked the count very well in his strikeout to get to 3-2 before the flamethrower got him w/the high cheese.

Nelson came in during the 6th and got one at bat off of a tough lefty, resulting in a swinging strike out. He played left and saw no balls come his way

And Bausher came in throwing a dominant 1.2 innings in which no ball left the infield. He showed a very good fastball that appeared to move a bit. It varied in speed, seeming to indicate (to this untrained eye) that he was either spotting it or featured both a 2 and 4 seamer. He also froze one guy with an outstanding 12-to-6 curve and made one guy look foolish showing a changeup (rare for someone in the brewers organization from what I can tell). He tried to throw a slider, too, (at least that's what my buddy and I thought), but I think everyone in the whole place saw he telegraphed it. It wasn't close, but you could see his arm extended and trying to slide underneath as if it was a slider. Let me just say that Bausher looked outstanding.

In the end, it was my first look at all of these fellas, and they all impressed. It was a heck of a lot better than those High Desert games I saw.

What are you doing in Arizona this fall (as opposed to San Jose this summer) and do you anticipate seeing the team again, at least in Scottsdale?

WEll, I graduated from college this past June, so my ties with Northern California have been severed (I don't miss much...good school, but I don't like California and Californians much.). So I saw High Desert in one of my last weeks there.

As for Arizona, I'm out here to work at a high school part time to gauge whether teaching is for me. Temporarily I can't begin working because of the lengthy background check (they want to make sure I won't start dating any of the high schoolers, or worse), so I'm free to go to games. I won't go to any day games till it cools off a bit here. I may see them this weekend, and I may see them on Thursday the 9th, as that is who my friend works for.

I can't say for sure. Another friend and I will hit up a bunch of games. Yesterday was nice w/the AZ and Brewers affiliates going at it, as he's a Dbacks fan (with some emotional ties to the brewers, courtesy of my constand yapping about them in college). I'd pencil me in for about 5 games this fall.

The neatest thing I saw in the league is that they keep the organizational jerseys to go with the Mesa/Peoria/Scottsdale hats.

I lived in Scottsdale for four years. Let me know if you need any help getting acclimated.

I will be attending at least one day at the Peoria event. For sure on Sunday and maybe part of Saturday. I hope to attend a fall league game on Saturday, USA vs Scottsdale. That is if I am released from off season chores.

What team does Dana's brother play on? Do you have a game on Sunday?

No box score available from Wednesday's game:

Saguaros 11, Scorpions 2

Adrian Gonzalez hit the first grand slam of the AFL season in a five run 4th inning as the Saguaros defeated the Scorpions tonight 11-2 in Peoria. The Saguaros drew first blood tonight scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning off Scorpions pitcher Dustin Nippert (AZ). Kade Johnson (MIL) drove in two of those runs with a double to the wall.

The Scorpions scored their first run of the season in the 6th inning when Reggie Abercrombie hit a solo homer to left field. Scott Hairston (AZ) drove in Nick Gorneault (ANA) in the 6th inning to account for the other Scorpions run.

Diamondbacks' prospects Chris Snyder, Josh Kroeger and Sergio Santos struggled at the plate tonight with a combined 1-11 performance. In addition, Pete Sikaras made his AFL debut in the 6th inning, allowing one earned run in his only inning of work.

Saguaros 5, Javelinas 3

Rickie Weeks on base in five of his first seven plate appearances, 2-for-2 in SB's; David Krynzel off to a 4-for-10 start -- MassBrew...

David Wright?s (NYM) two run homer in the 6th inning was the difference as the Saguaros defeated the Javelinas 5-3 at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Saguaros scored all five runs in the fifth inning giving Matt Peterson (NYM) his first win of the season. Dave Krynzel (MIL) also tripled to drive in two runs in the sixth.

Javelinas starting pitcher Chris Young (MON) looked impressive on the mound as he struck out three and only allowed two hits in three innings work. Byron Gettis (KC) had a solid day at the plate for the Javelinas going 2-for-5 with a double.

The Saguaros remain the only undefeated team in the AFL with a 3-0 record this season.
