I talked to Luis' girlfriend and she said that he will be pitching for the Licey's in the Dominican league starting next week. He has been working out with them for the last month.

Thanks for the info. Luis Martinez will be joining RHP Pedro Liriano on that staff. Yay -- Dominican League numbers are now available. Moreso than the other latin winter league, it appears that the Dominican League use of pitchers involves 7-8 pitchers getting in 1-2 innings per game tops. You'll see that as we display the various team stats here. Liriano has appeared in six of his team's 15 games, for a total of 4.1 IP.

While the rosters of the six teams are littered with Brewer property of years' past, it appears that only two other Brewers are currently active in the Dominican.

 

IF Enrique Cruz is 5-for-22 with five walks (.370 OBP) in the early going -- thank goodness he's seeing action. And as far as I know, Enrique's sister is still Pedro Martinez' girlfriend / fiancee. Just had to throw that in with the big Nomar Garciaparra / Mia Hamm wedding happening today:

So how long do we let the workhorse pitch? I'm sure Jim remembers the last time we let a pitcher pitch himself out in winterball and then try to get a full MLB season out of him for the first time.

Another update from his girlfriend, who is not too baseball smart but trys . . . She said he pitched an inning yesterday, 2 strikeouts and 1 walk. He was excited b/c he got his speed back up to 94-95. His plan is to only pitch 1 or 2 inning for a few weeks, then go back to starting but not pitching more than 5 innings.

Yup, that performance is now reflected in Martinez' Dominican League team's stats. RHP Pedro Liriano continues to have a dreary winter season, covering eight brief appearances. Neither IF Enrique Cruz nor RHP Leo Estrella have played over the past week. At times, the latin winter leagues have a rec league feel, with players coming and going as they like, particularly the native-born players.

Not much as of late out of Puerto Rico. No Childers' sightings in a while (RHP's Jason nor Matt). We'll wait another week or so before really wondering whether they're still hanging out with RHP Mike Adams.

FYI: Matt Childers has returned home to Georgia with his family. His daughter, Abbie, became really sick in Mayaguez and was in the hospital for over a week. Jason and his wife were up late every night helping Matt and his wife with their older son and helping to make trips to the hospital. Matt's daughter is doing much better now at home.

It's likely as noted in the Transaction thread that infielder Matt Erickson, coming off a pretty incredible season with AAA Albuquerque (Marlins), has signed with the Brewers in a deal yet to be formally announced.
