Final: Lansing (Cubs) 8, Beloit 4

Three HR's surrendered by RHP Brian Montalbo in a rare off-night for him...

Beloit Game Summary from the Lugnuts' site:

Three towering homeruns highlighted an offensive showing on a rainy night at Olds Park by the Lugnuts (7-5) in an 8-4 victory over Beloit (5-7) to snap a three-game losing streak.

One night after barely missing a walk-off homerun, Brian Dopirak left no questions about it tonight when he took Snappers starter Brian Montalbo (0-1) deep in the first inning into the kids' playground area over the left field wall. The Lugnuts kept the bats going in the inning after Kevin Collins walked. Ryan Fitzgerald singled to right and Jake Fox drove in Collins with an RBI single for an early 2-0 lead.

Robinson Chirinos followed Dopirak's example in the third, going yard over the left-center field wall and two batters later Collins launched a solo shot, his third of the season, high off of the scoreboard to make it 4-1. The Lugnuts added another run in the 5th but the Snappers chipped away at the lead with three straight hits in the 6th to put a run across on Adam Heether's RBI double.

Beloit closed the gap in the 7th to 5-4, turning four singles and a walk into two runs off of Ed Campusano, pitching in relief of Lansing starter Ronald Bay. But the Lugnuts came right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own on Dopirak's RBI single, Fitzgerald's RBI double, and Fox's second RBI single to put the game out of reach, 8-4.

Lansing's 2 through 6 batters each had two hits, at least one RBI and scored all of the Lugnuts runs. The eight runs are a season high for Lansing. Bay (2-0) threw six innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts for his second win of the year.

The Lugnuts continue the four-game series with Beloit Wednesday night as Lansing's Carlos Marmol takes the mound against the Snappers Carlos Villanueva. Game time is 5:05 p.m. Central.

Mavs, 3-1 after four.

Bo Hall pitches out of a huge Ozzie Chavez error-induced jam in the fourth.

You know me, very rare I single a player out on the negative side, but I've listened to a fair share of Maverick games this year and last, and am still waiting for Ozzie to produce anything but miserable results or to show any baseball instinct whatsoever.

I'm sure he'll have a huge rest of the game now...

Mavs are cruising here in the 5th, now 5-1, John Vandenberg with a two-run double, inning still rolling...

Ryan Miller Stirkeout King! He had 5 in 2 innings. That makes 20K's in 12 innings of work.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Mass, when I saw Chavez last June, he showed absolutely terrible range and a mediocre arm. Based on what I saw, if you put him, Loretta, and Counsell together on a field (at the same age, that is), Lo and Craig would have easily looked superior, despite both slipping under the prospect radar to have productive careers. I talked with Mike Linskog (can't remember his last name exactly...my best guess) and he said that Chavez had looked terrible all year, displaying none of the skills he was known for in Beloit

High Desert 10, Rancho Cucamonga 4, bottom of 8th. Bases loaded none out, Hinton's sac fly scores Morris with the only run of the inning. Woolard now in for his 3rd inning of work. Mavs have set season highs in runs (10) and hits (14).

Edit- now the game goes to the bottom of the 9th.

Mavs win 10-5. Nick Slack gives up a run in the 9th, but Mavs pitchers combine for 16 strikeouts- Hall 9 in 5 innings, Woolard 5 in 3 innings, and Slack 2 in 1 inning.

Edit- Eure had 3 of High Desert's 15 hits, but the big hit was a bases loaded double by VandenBerg in the six-run fifth inning. The Mavs had been 0 for 9 on the season with the bases loaded.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

There is one word to describe Huntsville?s performance on Tuesday night at Pringles Park: resilient. The Stars (7-5) recovered from West Tenn?s four-run first. Starter Jeff Housman rebounded to get his team into the fifth with a chance to win. And Prince Fielder capped Huntsville?s three-run seventh, slamming a go-ahead homerun in the Stars? 7-6 victory over the Diamond Jaxx (5-6). Huntsville jumped back into first place in the Southern League West, one-half game clear of Birmingham.

Chris Barnwell provided Huntsville?s response to West Tenn?s first-inning uprising. Rickie Weeks led off the second with a walk, and Brad Nelson doubled off the rightfield wall. With two on and none out, Barnwell sent Bobby Brownlie?s first pitch high over the leftfield wall for his first homerun this season, a three-run shot that pulled Huntsville within 4-3.

Housman showed tremendous grit after being reached for four runs on six hits, including three triples, in the first inning alone. He battled hard into the fifth, permitting just one more run over his 4 2/3 innings to keep Huntsville in striking distance.

Trailing 5-3 in the fifth, Stars leadoff hitter Tony Gwynn, Jr. doubled to left and scored on Fielder?s two-out single, his second hit of the day. After the Jaxx added a sixth-inning tally, Huntsville?s seventh began with Gwynn?s triple to left-center. Alex Delgado hit a ground ball to short, where Ronny Cedeno juggled the ball as Gwynn scored.

With Delgado at second, Fielder battled Jaxx reliever Yunior Cabrera to a 3-2 count. Fielder then launched a Cabrera breaking ball over the notch in the wall in right-center, more than 405 feet from home plate. Fielder?s two-run shot, his third of the season, put Huntsville up, 7-6. Fielder finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.

The Stars? outstanding bullpen took care of the rest. John Novinsky (2-0) won for the second straight night, allowing one run on two hits in the seventh, and Ryan Miller and Roberto Giron shut down the Jaxx from there. Miller delivered two scoreless innings, fanning five and permitting two hits to continue his remarkable April: 12 innings pitched, one earned run allowed, 20 strikeouts. Giron returned from a sore back to pick up his third save in as many tries, fanning one while retiring all three batters he faced in his first appearance since April 12. Cabrera (0-1) absorbed the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits in 1/3 inning.

Game three of the series is Wednesday night at Pringles Park. Huntsville righty Dennis Sarfate (0-0, 5.63) faces Diamond Jaxx lefty Renyel Pinto (1-1, 3.09). Start time is 6:35 p.m., with the FPH Financial Pre-game Show beginning at 6:20 p.m.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

FIELDER'S CHOICE

The Stars win their 4th straight in a bizarre game that had me going to the record books, as well as the box score archives....... John Novinsky picked up the win for the 2nd straight night for the good guys. The last Stars pitcher to pull this off was Mike Maurer on July 28-29, 1996 vs. Memphis. An unusual feat for a relief pitcher in itself, but Maurer, like Novinsky, did it in consecutive 4-3 and 7-6 victories. A near coincidence with the only difference being Novinsky's 5-4 win Monday night........

Top that one off? How about this? The Diamond Jaxx hit three triples in West Tenn's four-run 1st inning. There's not even an entry in the Southern League Media Guide to cover this. It pretty much stops at the record of five triples in a single game by Knoxville in 1977, so hitting three in one inning --- you gotta think that for sure is a record....... In all, five triples were hit in this game and the instance I can find of this in a Stars game was on May 24, 1989 vs. Knoxville.

Another rocky start for Jeff Housman tonight, who after three starts has given up 20 hits in 11 1/3 innings and has an ERA of 5.56....... Housman was pouncd on quickly in the 1st........ Leadoff hitter Jemel Spearman's single up the middle was quickly followed by a pair of triples to right field by former Greenville Brave Richard Lewis and Micah Hoffpauir, who is off to a .368 start -- 8th best mark in the Southern League...... Mike Dzurilla followed with a fly ball to right that scored him......... One out later, Matt Creighton hit the possible record third triple of the inning off Housman to left center. Successive singles by Giovany Soto and Ronny Cedeno followed and the Stars had a four-run handicap to start this game.

That won't be much of a handicap with this team all year, I think....... In fact, it just makes a sleeping bull mad....... The Stars struck quickly in the 2nd inning to come within a run........ D'Jaxx starter Bobby Brownlie, ranked 6th among the Cubs' top prospects, walked Rickie Weeks, then gave up a double high off the right field wall to Brad Nelson, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd........ Chris Barnwell then stepped up and became the 8th Huntsville Star to get on the home run roll this year with a blast high over the wall in left field........ It wasn't until May 3 of last year that Brandon Gemoll became the 8th Huntsville hitter to get his first homer of the season, and that was 29 games into the season.

After the Diamond Jaxx came back in the bottom of the 2nd with a two-out RBI double from Mike Dzurilla, it wasn't until the 5th the Stars were able to reduce their two-run lead. Meanwhile, Housman had set down eight of the next nine hitters before his pitch count was reached...... The Diamond Jaxx played tough tonight though, and they had their two-run lead back in the 6th....... Dwayne Bacon hit a two-out single through the right side and stole second base, setting up Jemel Spearman's RBI single.

In the 7th, the Stars, who had battled all night, finally took the lead........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. opened the 7th by hitting a 2-2 pitch deep to left, hammering off the wall. Mike Dzurilla's throw got away from the cut-off man and Gwynn had the 5th and final triple of the night........ Alex Delgado then hit a chopper to short that was juggled by Ronny Cedeno. The error scored Gwynn to make it 6-5. In came Yunior. Pulling a double switch, Bobby Dickerson also brought in Josh Arteaga to play 2nd base.

After a wild pitch, Prince Fielder worked the Diamond Jaxx new pitcher, Cabrera to a 3-2 count. Fielder crushed a hanging breaking ball to the deepest part of Pringles Park in right-center field and the Stars led 7-6....... You'd have to go back two Saturdays to find Fielder's last home run, but that was the Stars' 16th of the season, 12 games now into the season........ The 1997 Stars had 19 after 12 games and the 1985 team had 18. The 1995 team had 14, making this team the 3rd most prodigious home run hitting team at this stage of the season.

The Stars' bullpen, now with a 2.96 ERA after 12 games, closed the door on two hits for the D'Jaxx' remaining three innings. Ryan Miller going back to last year, has now given up only two earned runs in 28 1/3 innings, a 0.64 ERA........ Throwing two kinds of sliders effectively, he struck out five, giving him now 20 strikeouts in 12 relief innings. He is certainly making his case for a promotion to Indianapolis....... It was thought Miller would finish this game, because no one was warming up in the 9th. Roberto Giron's aching lower back had kept him from action, but to my surprise (and Stars voice Robert Portnoy's) Giron began warming up after Miller started to face Jemel Spearman. On Miller's first pitch, Spearman laid a beauty of a push-bunt single to the right side....... Giron, who had not pitched since April 12, took a minute to warm up on the mound, then faced pinch-hitter Paul O'Toole........ O'Toole laid a bunt down to Giron, who wisely threw to first....... With the tying run on second, the dangerous Micah Hoffpauir lined Giron's 1-1 pitch to third base. One out away. Mike Dzurilla the last man. Giron strikes him out on a 94 mph fastball and that was the end of that........ With Birmingham's loss to the Smokies, 3-2, the Stars found themselves back in first place.

The Stars are now batting .299 in their last four games, with more hits in their last four games then their first eight........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. is hitting .300 in his last four games, lifting his average to .205......... Prince Fielder is hitting .444 in his last five games with seven RBIs........ His, and Rickie Weeks' batting eye is sharp. Fielder has struck out 9 times in 41 at-bats, while Weeks has fanned 9 times in 45 at-bats........ Weeks is hitting .529 in his last four games. His .333 average is now 19th among Southern League batting leaders........ On the flip side, Brad Nelson has struck out 14 times in 40 at-bats, Chris Barnwell is still under the Mendoza line at .182, and Enrique Cruz, who started the season hot, is 1-for his last-13.

Robert Portnoy, our man behind the mike, reports that the Milwaukee Brewers television network will be starting a farm report before every game and their first request was information on Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks. They also requested info on other Stars prospects. The Brewers broadcast team was also interested in excerpts of the Stars pre-game show....... Japanese journalists were at Pringles Park tonight, also interested in Fielder and Weeks.

The Stars send Dennis Sarfate to face Renyel Pinto at about 6:30 CDT tomorrow........ Sarfate has failed to go into the 5th inning in his two starts so far.

Boy, I'm surprised no one thought of that before. It's not like Jim Powell has been doing a "Down on the Farm Report" for years, right? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Still a good idea, just a little late coming is all. I just hope Bill Schroeder doesn't do the "analysis" and talk about how all of our hitters need to "be more aggressive" and "swing earlier in the count".

Japanese journalists were at Pringles Park tonight, also interested in Fielder and Weeks.

That's just weird.

The Brewers must be playing some sort of weird joke with the High Desert people. Two times as many SB as anyone else in the league, yet no power. Small ball in Coors Field doesn't win ballgames, folks. (Though I'd like all of our teams to lead their leagues in walks.)

Well I can only figure on the Japanesse Fielder connection as the reason for that story. Unless Bud plans to pay down Miller Park debt by selling those two guys http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
