Final: Indianapolis 2, Toledo (Tigers) 1

Staff effort outstanding...

Indianapolis Game Notes:

Indians skipper Cecil Cooper utilized a combination of five pitchers to shut down the Toledo Mud Hens Wednesday evening, 2-1.

For the second time in their careers, Jason Childers saved a victory for his brother Matt (2-0). According to Elias Sports Bureau, that feat has never happened in Major League Baseball since saves became an official statistic in 1969. Ironically, the two teamed up together at Toledo last season (Aug. 7, 2003) to reach the same conclusion.

"It was a little bit windy out there," said Matt Childers. "I felt like I could get pretty comfortable. It?s exciting to have Jason save one for me. It was a little bit intense to watch Jason out there tonight. We enjoy being together and winning just makes the game a lot of fun."

Toledo (5-8) scored the first run of the game off Matt Childers in the third inning, after the Tribe reliever replaced starter Victor Santos.

Indianapolis (7-3) tied the game in the fourth inning. Jeff Liefer?s sacrifice fly off Toledo starter Shane Loux scored Dave Krynzel. In the next frame, Corey Hart hammered a triple into right center field off Loux in the fifth inning. Hart then scored on an errant pickoff throw from Mud Hens catcher Mike DiFelice, which proved to be the game winning run.

The Indians are now 7-0 when the opposition scores first. They are 6-1 in one-run games and remain in first place in the IL West Division.

The two teams meet again Thursday at Fifth Third Field for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Indianapolis will send right hander Ben Hendrickson (1-0, 1.64) to meet right hander Andy Van Hekken (0-1, 6.75).

Indianapolis Box Score:

David Krynzel's walk was the Tribe's only one, but he scored their first run...

Final: Lansing (Cubs) 5, Beloit 3

Snappers can't overcome a four-run first-inning deficit...

Beloit Game Summary from the Lugnuts' Site:

A big first inning and a strong outing from Lansing starter Carlos Marmol paced the Lugnuts (8-5) in a 5-3 win over Beloit (5-8) for the second night in a row.

The Lugnuts wasted no time getting on the board after Chris Walker led off the game with a bunt single. He stole second base, his first of a team record-tying three stolen bases in a game, before scoring on Snapper second baseman Guilder Rodriguez' error on Robinson Chirinos' grounder up the middle to go up 1-0. Brian Dopirak followed with a line drive two-run home run to left field, his second in as many nights and third of the season to tie him for the team lead, for the quick 3-0 score. Ryan Fitzgerald kept the hits coming with a double to right field and then stole third. Jake Fox got the fourth hit of the inning for the Lugnuts with his RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0.

Beloit answered back with a run in the 2nd on a triple to centerfield by Lou Palmisano, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Rottino. The Snappers had a power shot of their own in the 5th inning as Rottino went deep on a solo home run to left to cut the lead to 4-2. That was about the only mistake of the game for Marmol (2-0), who went eight innings giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out seven for the Lugnuts.

Marmol got another insurance run in the 6th inning when Fox ripped a single to left and moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a wild pitch. Alfredo Francisco picked up his first RBI of the season on his infield single to score Fox for the 5-2 lead.

Adalberto Mendez pitched the 9th for Lansing giving up one unearned run on a passed ball before striking out Rottino to end the game and notch his fifth save. Carlos Villanueva (0-3) took the loss for the Snappers, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits.

The Lugnuts look to continue their winning ways in the third meeting of the four-game series with Beloit Thursday night at Old Park. Lansing's Billy Petrick will pitch against Beloit's Luis Pena, with game time set for 5:05 PM Central Time.

Wow that isn't really very good to see that some can steal three bases of of Lou. I am not sure how well they were being held on or how good Lou's arm is, any insight would be helpful. I hope he was getting those steals of the pitcher, or he is unbelievably fast.

I haven't seen Villanueva pitch yet but some of the other snappers pitchers have slow deliveries which lead to stolen bases. Pena can be drawn out at times and I've seen some huge leads/steals from that.

Lansing State Journal on Lou Palmisano's basepath nemesis Wednesday night:

At 5-foot-8, Lugnut outfielder Chris Walker grew up a fan of the smaller, speedy professional players.

One of those childhood favorites coached him on Wednesday as the Lugnuts (8-5) took a 5-3 victory over Beloit (5-8).

Vince Coleman, a 16-year major leaguer and first-year minor league instructor in the Chicago Cubs organization, is currently working with the Lugnuts.

"Vince has made such a difference in my baserunning abilities," Walker said.

"Before I started working with him, I was too hesitant on whether I was going or not. Now, I just know."

Walker put that improvement on display Wednesday as he tied the single-game Lugnut record for stolen bases with three against the Snappers. Pat Hallmark stole three for Lansing in 1997 and Rick Pitts did it 1998.

"Chris has no fear," said Coleman, who led the National League in stolen bases for six straight years (1985-90) and is sixth all-time with 752. "And once you have no fear, it really allows you to go straightforward in your development and be successful."

Walker guaranteed he'd break the record by the end of the season.

"Hopefully, I can get it tomorrow," he said. "I might have gotten it today if I could have gotten on again."

Walker's three steals came in the first two innings.

"Chris got into the lineup and now I can't take him out," Lansing manager Julio Garcia said. "He really changes the dynamic of the game with some things we can do with him in there."

Final: High Desert 4, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2

Excellent mound work two games in a row -- nice!

High Desert Game Story from the Ontario Daily Bulletin:

All hail the power bat that is Kennard Bibbs...

Quakes pitcher Joe Saunders had another outstanding performance, but this time he only has a loss to show for it.

Saunders (2-1) threw six strong innings allowing just one unearned run, but Rancho Cucamonga fell to High Desert, 4-2, in front of an announced crowd of 2,213 at the Epicenter.

Saunders' performance was topped by Mavericks starter Khalid Ballouli (2-2) who blanked the Quakes over six innings.

Ballouli struck out eight batters and allowed three hits while walking just one.

"That's a tough one for Saunders. He did a good job out there," Quakes manager Bobby Meacham said. "You like to win that one for your starter, but I'm sure at some point this season he'll give up six or seven (runs) and we'll pick it up."

Saunders pitched a perfect first inning and would have got out of the second inning unscathed, save for a throwing error by third baseman B.J. Weed on a two-out grounder by High Desert's Mario Mendez that allowed Froilan Villanueva to score.

Saunders pitched four more scoreless inning without a real threat, but the Quakes couldn't figure out Ballouli as Sanders lost his first game in this his third start.

The Mavericks' Kennard Bibbs hit his first career home run to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh off reliever Rich Thompson.

Mario Mendez smacked High Desert's second homer of the night in the top of the ninth off David Austin, a two-run shot to right center that proved to be important.

The Quakes tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth off Dan Kolb. B.J. Weed and Reggie Willits singled to start the inning and, with two outs, Michael Napoli smacked a single to right-center field to score both runners. The two-run single saved the Quakes from their first shutout of the season and extended Napoli's hitting streak to nine games.

Greg Porter had a chance to tie the game after Napoli's hit, but Kolb struck him out to end the game and send the Quakes (6-6) to their fourth loss in five games.

After striking out 16 Quake batters on Tuesday, Mavericks pitchers Kolb and Ballouli combined to fan 12 more Rancho hitters.

"Sometimes you press when miss a chance to score or fail to move a runner over or you go 0-for-3 and try to get two hits the next time up," Meacham said. "We just have to relax and play, if you are thinking about the results all the time you're going to get into trouble. We have to get back to just playing."

High Desert improved to 5-9 on the season.
