Link Report for Games of Friday, April 23rd

MassBrew

We'll start with an interesting note from an Indy broadcast earlier this week. How many of you realized facial hair is a no-no for all minor leaguers (across all of baseball)? It seems J.J. Hardy was able to work on some "growth" while in big league camp with the Brewers this spring, but had to lose it upon re-assignment to minor league camp. Just something I'd never given much thought...

And on that enlightening note, here's Friday's Daily Menu, stubble-free:

All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pedro Liriano at Toledo (Tigers), 6:00 PM

Audio link:

www.newstalk1430.com/

HUNTSVILLE: RHP Mike Jones at home vs. Tennessee (Cardinals), 7:05 PM; the Stars won't face Luis Martinez in this series, he pitched on Wednesday; Matt Parker saw relief action Wednesday and will likely see action this weekend against some of his former mates...

Audio link:

www.espn1450.com/

HIGH DESERT: RHP David Bradley gets his first start of the season at home vs. Rancho Cucamonga (Angels), 9:05 PM; LHP Ryan Costello (0-3) has been pulled from the starting rotation for now; the Mavs' are in the midst of 11 games in 14 days against the Quakes, including seven days in a row -- the California League schedule is ridiculous, but it's all about cost-effectiveness...

Audio link:

www.hdmavs.com/listen_live.htm

BELOIT: RHP Luis Pena at Lansing (Cubs), 5:05 PM; well, we learned yesterday to not always trust starting pitcher info, as LHP Greg Kloosterman took the mound, but we trust in Luis Friday night; Snappers try to avoid the sweep...

The Lugnuts' audio feed is also archived after the game -- nice if there's a momentous game-turning play you'd like to re-visit!

Beloit Game Summary from the Lugnuts' Site:

One night after being shutout, Beloit returned the favor on Lansing Friday night holding the Lugnuts scoreless for the 3-0 win. The loss snaps Lansing's three game winning streak, the attempt for the series sweep, and is the first time the Lugnuts (9-6) have been shutout this season.

The Snappers (6-9) got the only runs of the game in the 5th inning, started by Gilberto Acosta reaching on an error. Lou Palmisano followed with the first of three consecutive RBI doubles to score Acosta. Vinny Rottino knocked the next one down the left field line to bring in Palmisano, and Drew Anderson plated Rottino with his RBI double to right for the 3-0 lead. The runs, all unearned, were all that the Snappers pitchers would need, only allowing five hits on the night. Luis Pena (2-0) led the way for Beloit going five innings, giving up three hits and striking out three.

The Lugnuts had runners in scoring position four times but could not take advantage of the situations, stranding eight runners on base for the game. In the 5th inning, Jake Fox reached base on a single up the middle followed by a walk to C.J. Medlin. Carlos Rojas hit a grounder headed to right field but Snappers second baseman Guilder Rodriguez went deep in the hole to make the diving stop for the out at first and save a run from scoring. Fox and Medlin moved to second and third on the play but with two outs Chris Walker struck out to end Lansing's best threat of the night.

Beloit's Ken Durost went three scoreless innings in relief of Pena and Ty Taubenheim closed out the Lugnuts in the 9th to pick up his second save of the season. Lansing starter Randy Wells (0-2) took the loss, throwing five innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, none earned, with four strikeouts. Ed Campusano and Reid Willett pitched well in relief for the Lugnuts, holding the Snappers scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Indianapolis Game Summary:

Jon Nunnally smashed a three-run home run off Toledo starter Ariel Prieto (1-1) in the Tribe fourth to lead Indianapolis (9-3) to a three-game series sweep over the Mud Hens (5-10) Friday night at Fifth Third Field, 6-2.

Nunnally, who had been in an 0 for 13 slump and battling some tenderness in his right hand, had faced Prieto numerous times before during a stint in the Mexican League.

?I knew that I had to be patient against Prieto,? Nunnally said. ?I figured that he would run me a slider or a cutter and I was prepared to put in a good swing. Prieto is a good pitcher. I?m actually still a little weak in my right hand, but it?s going to come.?

Pitcher Pedro Liriano (1-0) had his best start for Indianapolis. He threw five innings, allowing five hits and one run. He recorded a season-high seven strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Liriano and Prieto threw scoreless innings through the first three frames. In the fourth, Chris Magruder was hit by a Prieto fastball. Jeff Liefer then dribbled an infield single before Nunnally?s home run. The three-run shot proved to be the game winning hit.

Indianapolis added a solo run in the fifth. With one out, Matt Erickson was hit by a pitch from Prieto. Magruder doubled to left, moving Erickson to third, who eventually scored on Prieto?s wild pitch.

Toledo added a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Marcus Thames hit a solo home run to left field off Liriano for the first score. In the next frame, Andy Barkett hit a solo home run to right center field off reliever Dan Reichert, cutting the Indians lead to 4-2.

Indianapolis added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth with a two-out rally. Mark Johnson doubled, then scored on Luis Figueroa?s double. Dave Krynzel, who now boasts a seven-game consecutive hitting streak, smashed a single to center, scoring Figueroa.

The Tribe has now won four consecutive games and travels to Columbus for a two-game series with the Clippers, Saturday and Sunday.

Final: High Desert 7, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

There?s the old saying that ?one?s an accident, two?s a trend, and three?s a streak.? The Mavericks are familiar with such a phrase now.

The Mavs displayed an impressive offensive performance once again to take their third win in four games, downing the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 7-4 before 2,022 at Mavericks Stadium on Friday evening.

High Desert (6-10), drawing to within 5.5 games of first-place Lancaster with their win and Lancaster?s 4-3 loss at Inland Empire, was led by Travis Hinton?s 4-for-4 performance at the plate, all hits on singles, and three RBI?s.

The Mavs struck first for a 2-0 lead in the second, on RBI singles by Hinton and Callix Crabbe, off Quakes starter Daniel Davidson. Hinton pushed the lead to 3-0 the following inning with an RBI single to right, where Mario Mendez followed two batters later by drilling a monstrous three-run bomb to left off Davidson, his second homer of the year, hiking the lead to 6-0.

After Rancho Cucamonga (7-7) responded with a run in the fourth, Jeff Eure retaliated with an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth which finished the Mavs scoring for the game, increasing the lead to 7-1.

The Quakes drew two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to finish off the scoring.

High Desert?s mound effort came through in stellar fashion once again, with starter David Bradley allowing only a run on four hits through four innings of work, retiring the first eight of nine batters of the game. Glenn Woolard (1-0) picked up the win in relief, surrendering only two runs (both unearned) on three hits in four innings, including five strikeouts.

Nick Slack closed out the game for the Mavericks, allowing a run on two hits in one inning with one strikeout.

Daniel Davidson (0-1), who?s past stifling performances jetted the Quakes out to a 2-0 record against the Mavs in his starts, suffered the loss by getting rocked for seven runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

Saturday afternoon?s 5:05 p.m. start (Central) is rally towel giveaway day sponsored by Oil Recycling, while Sunday is the second Mavericks Little League clinic of the season. Forrest Martin (0-1) gets the start for the Mavs in the Saturday matinee, facing Quakes counterpart Jean Toledo (1-0).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

In front of 8,322 Stars fans waiting to explode, Tennessee Smokies pitchers made sure the only pyrotechnics came after the game. A pair of Smokies pitchers combined to four-hit Huntsville in Tennessee?s 5-0 shutout of the Stars (7-6) at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars' loss snapped a four-game winning streak and dropped them one-half game behind Birmingham in the Southern League West.

Mike Jones (0-2) suffered the loss for Huntsville despite five solid frames, fanning a season-high eight while allowing just one run on four hits and two walks. The lone tally against Jones resulted from his own wild pitch that advanced Skip Schumaker to third with one out in the first. Dan Moylan drove in Schumaker with a groundout to short.

Smokies righty Brad Thompson (2-0) won his second straight start and continued a remarkable start to the season, authoring 7 2/3 shutout innings to bring his consecutive scoreless streak to 14 2/3 innings. Thompson allowed only one runner to reach second and went to a three-ball count just three times. He fanned six and walked one while throwing 101 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Reliever Matt Parker ? a mid-season all-star for Huntsville last season ? made his first appearance against the Stars since being signed by St. Louis following his release from Milwaukee. Parker has now thrown three spotless outings after retiring all four Stars he faced, fanning three.

Tennessee (8-7) broke up a 1-0 game in the seventh, scoring three against reliever Brian Adams. Thompson singled home a run, his first hit and RBI as a pro, and Moylan delivered a two-out, two-run single for a 4-0 lead. Schumaker?s ninth-inning sacrifice fly closed the scoring.

Stars righty Tim Bausher (1-1, 2.57) faces lefty Chris Narveson (0-2, 4.11) in game two of the series on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. on NASCAR Theme Night with an appearance by the zany Zooperstars.

Huntsville Times Game Story:

Stars pitcher elbows his wayto peace of mind

Huntsville loses game, but Jones able to throw curve

By PAUL GATTIS

Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com

Sometimes the victories in minor league baseball can't be found on the scoreboard.

The Huntsville Stars' 5-0 loss to Tennessee on Friday night was a classic example.

But Stars pitcher Mike Jones was all smiles in the clubhouse after the game even as his record dropped to 0-2.

Recovering from an elbow injury that ended his season prematurely last year, Jones felt as if the injury had never occurred in striking out eight Smokies in five innings of work.

And considering that Jones is rated the Milwaukee Brewers' No. 6 minor league prospect, that's wonderful news from here to Wisconsin.

"It felt really good," Jones said as he wore ice packs on his right elbow and right shoulder. "My curveball was working for me."

That curveball was a litmus test for Jones' elbow. He said it's the first time this season he's felt comfortable throwing it and it served him well as his strikeout pitch.

"Absolutely," Jones said. "I would not have my curveball if I wasn't 100 percent healthy."

The curve had an obvious impact for Jones in his overall performance. In his first two starts that covered nine innings, Jones had only two strikeouts.

But he had four strikeouts by the end of the second inning Friday before 8,322 - the largest crowd of the season - at Joe Davis Stadium.

More than the inner workings of Jones' elbow, though, was the hurdle Jones cleared in his mind, according to Stars manager Frank Kremblas.

"I think it was more mental for him than anything," Kremblas said.

In spite of the joy over Jones, though, the Stars had their four-game winning streak snapped by a pitcher who was even better than Jones.

Tennessee's Brad Thompson (2-0) kept the Stars off balance throughout the game, allowing just four hits in 72/3 innings. He only had six strikeouts but the number of hard hit balls by the Stars could be counted on one hand.

He combined with former Star Matt Parker on the shutout. Parker pitched the final 11/3 innings, striking out three.

It's the fourth time the Stars have been shut out in their last 10 games.

"He got really good movement on his fastball," Kremblas said. "He did a real good job of pitching."

The Smokies got all they needed in the first inning when Skip Schumaker led off the game with a single. He stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Dan Moylan's ground out.

Tennessee added three more runs in the seventh - highlighted by Moylan's two-run single - and a final run in the ninth on Schumaker's sacrifice fly.

Saenz goes to big leagues: Stars reliever Chris Saenz realized a dream Friday when he was promoted to the Brewers.

Saenz was called up as an insurance policy after Brewers pitcher Chris Capuano strained a quadricep muscle in his leg.

The Stars also added catcher Joel Alvarado from Rookie League Helena. Alvarado replaces Alex Delgado, who was placed on the temporarily inactive list because of a family medical emergency.

Homestand continues: The Stars and Smokies play again tonight at 7:05 at Joe Davis Stadium. The two teams end their four-game series with a doubleheader starting at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY?

The arms of Morpheus caught up with me as I was updating this site last night after midnight. I started to nod off in my chair and almost toppled over, kind of like sleeping behind the wheel and steering off the road, to analogize...... I caught myself and said "that's enough."........ So I apologize if it's a little late.

An army of city and area Little Leaguers filled the ballpark more than an hour before the game to take part in what was nothing more than a big introduction ceremony and recognition of their teams. They constituted the bulk of the season-high crowd, much of them staying for this disappointing loss that may or may not have broken the Stars' 4-game win streak. (The first game of Thursday's double-header will be made up, the game being picked up in the 2nd inning with the Stars trailing the Diamond Jaxx, 6-3.)...... It was by far, the largest Little League congregation I had seen, and they do this every year........ The nice crowd raises the Stars' average attendance this year to 3,337 --- 5th in the league. Jacksonville leads the league in average attendance with Montgomery slightly trailing, and the Smokies in third....... Lame-duck Greenville, as you'd might guess, is last.

Some news on the scoreboard. Another delay....... Part of the scoreboard, the section giving us the LED technology and video screen, is coming from China and they told the Stars they wouldn't be able to deliver until May 17. They expect a five-day delivery date, and I'm told by G.M. Bryan Dingo that the scoreboard won't be fully operational until the first week of June. The other part of the scoreboard is coming from Canada and there are no problems on that front.

Catcher Alex Delgado has left the team voluntarily because of a family emergency in Puerto Rico. The Stars have filled Delgado's absence for a undetermined period by calling up Joel Alvarado, called up from Helena's roster....... This will be Alvarado's 3rd season with the Stars......... The Stars on Friday morning received word that pitcher Chris Saenz was being promoted by the parent Brewers. The vacancy was created when Chris Capuano went on the disabled list with a strained quadricep muscle. Though it looks like the promotion won't be permanent, Saenz will make his major league debut on Saturday starting against the Cardinals.

Mike Jones celebrated his 21st birthday, Friday night, and for him it was a good birthday in many respects........ His arm felt fine, before, during, and after the ballgame and for the first time in a long time, he felt no qualms about throwing his curve and used it without any trepidation. Jones said, "I would not have my curveball if I wasn't 100% healthy."........ It served him well as his strikeout pitch Friday night, and he used it to strike out eight hitters in five innings against a team that was hitting .267 coming in....... On the flip side, he had to take the 5-0 loss when he gave up the deciding run in the 1st inning.

Skip Schumaker led off with a solid single to right, then stole second on a 2-2 pitch to Papo Bolivar, to third on a wild 1-0 pitch to Dan Moylan, finally scoring on a grounder to short by Moylan....... Jonesy got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the 2nd inning by striking out Gabe Johnson and Tennessee starter Brad Thompson in succession, and another jam in the 3rd inning when Tennessee manager Mark DeJohn put on the double steal successfully, but with Bolivar on third and Javier Colina on second, Jonesy struck out shortstop Joe Nelson on a 3-2 curve. From that point, he retired six of seven hitters to face him........ Jones threw 59 pitches through three innings, but only 10 in his final two innings of work........ For the Stars, it was the fourth time in eight games that they've been shutout.

By comparison, Tennessee starter Brad Thompson became a workhorse, without too much initial effort. Through four innings, he had thrown 53 pitches, and 77 through six innings, ending up with 101 for the game, 67 for strikes........ Thompson, who got 11 ground balls and three hit to the outfield in his game, helped himself defensively as well, starting a 1-6-3 double play in the 2nd inning, made two straight assists in the 3rd --- one on a broken bat grounder to the 1st base side of the mound, started a rundown play that removed Ryan Knox, who had led the 4th with a double, tipped a broken bat liner for a 4-3 putout in the 5th, and made another 1-3 play in the 6th......... The hardest hit ball in the whole game was a deep fly that by Skip Schumaker that looked like it would find the gap in top of the 9th, but Tony Gwynn, Jr. caught up with it, causing an exaggerated thrill you wouldn't have seen but for the fact that there simply weren't any defensive thrills at all.

Matt Parker proved why he was snapped up so quickly after he was released by the Brewers when he struck out three of the four batters to face him to end the game, Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks on change-ups. We here in Huntsville, knew he was that good. Too good, in fact, to let go......... Luis Martinez will not start in this series for Tennessee, having started last Wednesday.

Weeks was hit twice by pitches in this game. In the 2nd, he was hit by a 1-1 pitch from Thompson that glanced off his helmet....... Jonesy, perhaps in retaliation, gave Papo Bolivar a fastball under his chin in the 3rd inning that knocked him to the dirt........ Weeks was hit again in the 7th inning, again leading off, on the fanny. He's the first hitter since Corey Hart last year on July 25 to be hit twice in a game....... Corey, by the way, is 3rd among International League slugging leaders with a .766 mark. Hart is hitting .340 for Indianapolis thus far, with a club-leading 4 HRs and 10 RBIs.

Another big crowd is expected Saturday for two special promotions. One is the popular Zooperstars, which IMHO is a funnier act than The Chicken, and two is another uniform auction......... The uniforms the Stars will wear tonight will have a NASCAR theme. Can't wait to see how they incorporate that. The game worn unis, of course, will be auctioned during the game on the inner concourse........ Tim Bausher (1-1, 2.57) will face left-hander Chris Narveson (0-2, 4.11)........ Derek Lee (0-2, 6.30) will start tonight for New Hampshire against the Erie SeaWolves in an Eastern League game.
