Big start for Housman today, I would think. Last year he had a great ERA and a bad K/BB ratio; this year it's the opposite. But last year he also gave up almost as many unearned as earned runs, IIRC, which was a big neon warning sign. The bloom is off the rose, and if he's going to move up, he's going to have to find something we haven't seen yet.

Final: Indianapolis 6, Columbus (Yankees) 4

Tribe back on track quickly...

Indianapolis Game Summary:

Jon Nunnally hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth that broke 4-4 tie and gave the Indianapolis Indians a 6-4 win over the Columbus Clippers.

Chris Coste started off the eighth with a leadoff double. Nunnally followed with a two run shot to right field off of Hansel Izquierdo. Nunnally finished the game 2-for-5. Chris Magruder also had big day for the Indians. He was 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, and two runs batted in.

Chris Michalak won his second game of the year in relief. He pitched 1 2/3rd innings and only allowed one hit and struck out one. Michalak lowered his ERA to 0.84 on the year.

Izquierdo (0-1) took the loss in relief. He surrendered three runs, two earned, on five hits over 2 1/3rd innings of work.

Mike Vento and John Rodriguez both hit home runs for the Clippers. Felix Escalona went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI in the loss.

With the win, Indianapolis stretches their lead in the Western division to 3 1/2 games over Columbus. The Clippers play host to Toledo tomorrow at 7:05 PM (ET), while Indianapolis travels to Louisville for a four game series.

Although this was not originally on the schedule, this doubleheader will be made up Monday, with the first game starting at 2:05 CDT I'm told. It will be picked up where it left off in the bottom of the 1st, with the second game to follow. There's a 30% chance of showers in the morning, clearing by noon with a high around 70°.

From the Huntsville Site:

The rain does provide for a matchup vs. Luis Martinez; something to listen to in the office Monday...

The Stars and Smokies were suspended by rain after one full inning with the contest tied, 0-0, in game one of a scheduled doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The game will be resumed with the start of the second inning at 2:05 p.m. CT Monday at Joe Davis Stadium, with game two of the doubleheader to follow 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

Huntsville righty Paul Stewart (1-0, 2.19) meets Tennessee right-hander Jeremy Cook (0-0, 0.00) in the completion of the suspended game, and Stars lefty Matt Ford (1-1, 2.70) battles Smokies left-hander Luis Martinez (2-1, 4.85) in game two of the twin bill.

My Beloit Report:

- it was bone-chilling cold.

- Montalbo looked pretty good, and flashed the leather on the mound as well.

- Lou Palmisano is the real deal. He threw someone out stealing as well, and it looked like he had a decent arm.

- it was very cold.

- Gilberto Acosta looked really good at shortstop, and Guilder looked awfully comfortable at 2B as well.

In case Brian somehow forgot to mention it...it was COLD at Beloit today.

I've been to a good handful of Snapper games this year so far, and let me tell ya....Lou Palmisano hits the ball hard, every time he makes contact.

Vinny Rottino with a BOMB today! Guess there's a few guys who can hit the ball out of the infield after all?!?!

Montalbo looked good, like Brian said, but he fell apart in the 5th. Of course, the bottom of the 4th was almost 45 minutes, so he very well could have stiffened up before he took the mound again.

Final: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 6, High Desert 4

High Desert Site Game Summary:

TWO OUT OF THREE AIN?T BAD

All pre-game directions pointed to a High Desert Mavericks sweep. Rancho Cucamonga Quakes starter Phil Wilson took the mound, whom the Mavs rocked in his two previous outings. Adam Pavkovich, who has burned the Mavericks in their past 13 meetings, was out of the lineup.

It didn?t matter, as a big five-run Rancho Cucamonga fourth inning handed the Mavericks a 6-4 loss on Sunday afternoon at Mavericks Stadium, before 2,107.

Still, the Mavericks can be satisfied in the standings, taking two out of three from Rancho Cucamonga in the three game series, while remaining four-and-a-half games back of first place Lancaster and Inland Empire in the California League?s South Division.

Up 3-0, Mavs starter Bo Hall (1-2) surrendered three home runs in the fourth, one to Erick Aybar, a three-run shot to David Gates, and a solo homer one batter later to Justin Turner, putting Rancho up 5-3.

The Mavericks (7-11) got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, when Callix Crabbe?s infield single gave Quakes second baseman Javy Rodriguez fielding problems, booting the ball into right-field and allowing Jeremy Frost to score from second base.

Michael Napoli responded for Rancho Cucamonga (8-8) next inning on a solo homer to left off Mavs reliever Craig Breslow, hiking Rancho?s lead to 6-4 and finishing the scoring.

The Mavs seemed destined for the sweep earlier in the ballgame, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Frost belted his first homer of the year, a two-out, two-run blast to left off Quakes starter Phil Wilson (2-1).

High Desert expanded the lead to 3-0 in the next inning, when Chris Morris drove Ozzie Chavez home on an RBI sacrifice-fly.

Frost led the Mavs hitting attack with a 2-for-4 effort at the dish, with a homer and two RBI?s. Aybar tallied a 3-for-4 offensive performance to lead Rancho Cucamonga .

The Mavs head to Lake Elsinore for a brief three-game road trip beginning on Tuesday, when Khalid Ballouli (2-2) takes the hill for High Desert against Lake Elsinore ?s Tim Stauffer (1-0), with the first pitch at 9:05 p.m. (Central) from The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.

My thoughts:

It was cold.

The T-Rats starting pitcher was really bad. It seemed as though everyone was hitting the ball hard off of him.

The T-Rats in the bullpen were rather cranky. While we weren't the most gracious of hosts, the minor league Cubs & Angels from the past 2 years had much thicker skins.

Palmisano is an extremely friendly person with a good head on his shoulders. It seems as though the entire team gets along very well.

32 oz. beers are big.

And that's where my memory ends http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

Most of the group headed for shelter shortly after the beginning of the game, while a few of us (Toby, Shawn, Doug, Jen, obobo, myself & Brian later on) dared the open elements of the party deck, not that the overhang behind home plate offered that much warmth. Mike Rizzo & his wife Robin were very pleasant additions, and while they're used to the mid-80s at this time of year, they handled the weather like champs.

Thanks to everyone for making it out & braving the elements, and thanks to the Snappers for their hospitality. GM Brian Barkowski (sp?) in particular goes out of his way to make sure everyone is having a good time. I had a great time this year, and going 2-0 certainly didn't hurt.

RoCo, sorry I didn't get the chance to meet you. I found out later from Brian that you were in attendance. The same goes for anyone else I didn't get to meet.

***I forgot to mention to MassBrew that last year's Miss Beloit now works for the Snappers as part of their promotional team. The Snappers always get a couple of lovely young ladies to do this job for them, and while I didn't get a close up picture of her for you to enjoy, she is in the background of one of the few pictures I took over the weekend. Unfortunately, I'm kind of in the way, sorry http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

More details on Indy:

Indianapolis (10-4) used a pair of two-run home runs from Chris Magruder and Jon Nunnally, plus a solid relief stint from southpaw Chris Michalak (1-2) Sunday afternoon, to hold back Columbus, 6-4.

?I think I accomplished what I set out to do today,? said Michalak. ?I just wanted to throw strikes and have the hitters put the ball in play. I did a good job spotting my pitches and it kept us in the game.?

The two teams waited 19 minutes to start the affair, which was delayed by rain at the outset. Columbus (7-8) quickly got on the board against Tribe starter Travis Phelps. John Rodriguez tripled to center field, then scored on Felix Escalona?s single to right field.

Indianapolis, which has won five of its last six games, took the lead in the third on Magruder?s two-run home run to right, driving in J.J. Hardy, who had reached base on a double.

Rodriguez collected his second hit of the game in the fourth for Columbus with a solo home run to right field off Tribe reliever Matt Wise. Later in the inning, Escalona came around to score on Darren Bragg?s RBI single for a 3-2 Columbus edge.

Hardy tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single to right center field, but Columbus bounced right back in the sixth as Mike Vento hit a solo home run, the second round-tripper hit off Wise.

The Tibe scored again in the seventh to tie the contest, 4-4. Luis Figueroa walked, then scored on a passed ball from catcher Dave Parish.

In the eighth, Chis Coste doubled to center field off Columbus reliever Hansel Izquierdo. Then, Nunnally powered his second home run of the season off Izquierdo for the game winning runs.

Michalak, inserted in the Tribe lineup in the seventh inning, pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, setting up Jason Childers? league-leading fifth save.

Indianapolis, sporting the top record in the IL, travels to Western Division foe Louisville Monday. The Tribe will send Ben Hendrickson (2-0, 1.10) to meet Matt Belisle (1-2, 2.14).

I hope everybody had as much fun as can be expected given the circumstances. Had we done the typical 50/50 raffle, I would have been able to meet you. I was next to the "Rizzos" trying to stay warm near the press box. Met some at Culvers after the game. And, yes, the T-Rats starter was bad as was his successor. In fact, the whole team is rather bad. In last night's game, they sent TWO guys to the plate with averages over .225 and the highest one hit a mighty .250. Five of their six wins are at the expense of one team(Burlington). It's going to be a long year in App-le-ton.

More details of the game are coming back to me now (I was just kidding about my 32 oz. beer comment, after all, I was the designated driver today).

Trofholz' HR was a shot to straight-away CF. I know that lend d money has questioned his ability to hit a ball out of the infield, but that ball was absolutely smoked, a line drive HR that probably never got more than 20' off the ground. Rottino's HR was another good shot, although as I did mention before, almost all of the Snappers were making consistent, hard contact off of the T-Rats starting pitcher. Drew Anderson hit a very hard line drive to RF, a shot many of us thought could have been a triple as Anderson eased up standing with an easy double almost before the ball even made it to the outfielder's glove.

Guilder Rodriguez has a much more sound swing than Ralph Santana's a few years ago. I was never impressed with Santana, who flew open on his swing similar to Ichiro to generate his ability to make hard contact. Rodriguez used a much more conventional, compact approach.

And there was a lot of sloppy play today. Several plays weren't listed as errors in the field, but every time I watch minor league ball (or lower) I'm reminded how much we take for granted how smooth & crisp Major Leaguers play the game. Of course, that's what the minors are all about.

David Weiser from Huntsville:

Sunday's doubleheader against the Tennessee Smokies was called off by rain after the Stars had batted in the bottom of the 1st. The doubleheader will be replayed Monday at 2:05 pm, an open date for both teams.......... Jeff Housman had retired the side in order on 12 pitches, 8 for strikes, in the top of the inning without a drop.

The drops began after Prince Fielder blooped a two-out single over second base, dropping in on the grass out of everyone's reach. Rickie Weeks then followed with a single solidly to left. After Brad Nelson grounded his first pitch to first baseman Corey Erickson to retire the side, the buckets began to fall. Within the half-four, the outfield was drenched, with several puddles forming. Twice the rain let up for a few seconds, only to drench the field again.

With the Smokies travelling down I-65 to Montgomery and the Stars going to Chattanooga (for series beginning Tuesday), that fortunately facilitated the re-scheduling for Monday....... This is the 4th rainout for the Stars this month, one shy of the club record of 5 set in May of 1986......... The forecast for tomorrow's doubleheader looks good --- a 30% chance of rain in the morning, clearing by noon and a high of around 70°.

I'll add my comments:

It was wet and cold

Unfortunately I had to leave early so I didn't see the go ahead runs, but it was an interesting game. Had the wind been going steady like it was earlier as opposed to the occaisonal gusts I'm sure we'd have seen a couple more Snapper HRs as they bounced a couple of those doubles high off the wall.

Trofholz did hit a shot to dead center, nearly off the flag pole.

It did seem like the Snappers we're taking BP off the T-rats starter.

I think I saw everyone, but didn't get a chance to meet the Rizzo's. Good showing with 27 people, maybe we can get a May game next year http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Let me add It was COLD , but we still had a great time . I came in town with a head cold so I was feeling badly and I did not get around as much as I wanted as I was in a clod medicine fog.

Also got to met a coulpe of parents as well Mr Trofholz and Mr Heether which I always enjoy.

It was nice to meet Brian and his wife who sang really good as well as seeing my old friend Patrick who threw a flamethrowing strike for the first pitch . I did get a chance to spend some time with Lend D and his family which was a treat (culvers) in it self . When a Californian thinks what a family is like back this area they are it some really nice people with good kids ,I think the Brewers are really lucky to have fans fans like these I hope to get back to listen to mrs Lend d sing the anthem.

After the game we met up the a bunch of the guys and went out and had a great time they are a great bunch of young men with Special props to Danas roomate Tim Dillard .

Overall Had a great time in Beloit but next time a I wait a little later in the year for a visit. Thanks to everyone

Let me add, once again, that it was cold!

Didn't get to meet as many as I'd have liked, but between looking for cover from the rain and having to leave early.....

Lend D, you have to let me know when you're going, so one of these days I can settle up on my debt.
