Final: Indianapolis 8, Louisville (Reds) 4

Indianapolis Game Summary:

Indianapolis, IN - Jeff Liefer cleared the bases with a double to right field that capped off a five-run seventh inning as the Indianapolis Indians rallied to beat the Louisville Bats 8-4.

Liefer finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with four RBI to increase his team-leading batting average to .339.

Reggie Rivard (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Pedro Liriano. Rivard surrendered two earned runs on two hits and walked one in two innings of work.

Liriano hurled five strong innings but did not figure into the decision. He gave up eight hits, two earned runs, and struck out three batters.

The Louisville bullpen spoiled a solid pitching effort by starter Joe Valentine. Aaron Myette (1-1) took the loss after giving up six runs, five of them earned, in 1 2/3rd innings.

Valentine gave up only two earned runs on four hits in five innings but received the no-decision.

J.J. Hardy chipped in two hits, including a double and solo home run, for the Indians.

Felipe Lopez and Reggie Taylor both homered in the loss for Louisville.

Indianapolis improves to 12-5 and remains in first place in the West Division of the International League. Louisville falls to 7-12 and hold on to their spot in the cellar of the West.

This series continues tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM Central.

Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 6, Huntsville 5

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

The Stars staged a late rally again, only this time they fell one run short. Trailing 1-0, Chattanooga (12-8) scored six unanswered runs and held on for a 6-5 win over Huntsville on Wednesday afternoon at Bell South Park. With Birmingham?s loss to West Tenn, the Stars (10-8) maintained a one-half game lead in the Southern League West.

The Lookouts stormed to a 6-1 lead after six innings before the Stars? bats finally came alive in the eighth. Tony Gwynn, Jr. extended his hitting streak to ten games with a leadoff single and stole second with one out. Prince Fielder ? with ?Big Daddy? Cecil Fielder looking on from the stands ? capped off his 2-for-4 day with a double to right-center, scoring Gwynn from second. One out later, Brandon Gemoll ripped a two-run homer to right, his second of the year, to pull Huntsville within 6-4. Gemoll finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the ninth, Joel Alvarado lashed a leadoff double off the leftfield wall. Jason Belcher?s one-out, pinch-single scored Alvarado. Belcher is 3-for-4 as a pinch-hitter this season. Pinch-runner Ryan Knox took second on Gwynn?s groundout, but Lookouts reliever Travis Thompson struck out Enrique Cruz to seal the victory.

Steve Kelly (3-0) won his third straight decision, allowing an unearned run on three hits and two walks while fanning four over five innings. Jeff Housman (0-2) absorbed the loss, permitting three runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Thompson fanned two and notched his second save despite surrendering his first run this season on two hits in the ninth. Stars reliever Paul Stewart gave up three runs on five hits over two innings, and Lookouts reliever Todd Coffey allowed three hits and three runs in the eighth.

Game three of the series is Wednesday night at Bell South Park, when Stars righty Chris Saenz (1-1, 3.86) ? fresh off six shutout innings and a victory in a spot start for Milwaukee ? meets Lookouts right-hander Brian Rose (0-0. 2.25). Game time is 6:15 p.m. CT with pre-game show starting at 6:00 p.m.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

A SURPRISING PROMOTION

The Stars this time had a crosswind going to left field instead of right, not as strong to be sure, and certainly to no advantage......... The Stars staged what has become a habit --- a come-from-behind rally, again, but this time, they came up short, but before I get into the details, there came some rather surprising news from my friend Robert Portnoy.

Reggie Rivard was promoted to Indianapolis. At first, I thought the call was to Milwaukee, but as it turned out, Indianapolis beat Louisville, 8-4 this afternoon, and getting the win was Rivard, who pitched two innings and gave up two runs, but got credit for the win, nonetheless......... The promotion leaves a vacancy on the roster, which was filled when Chris Saenz was reinstated on the ballclub, after being optioned back to Huntsville on Sunday........ Saenz will start for the Stars tomorrow against Chattanooga, fresh off his successful start against the St. Louis Cardinals last Saturday. Game time is 6:15 CDT. Going for the Lookouts is right-hander Brian Rose (0-0, 2.25).

It was an unusually long workday, so I was able to hear a snip here and a snip there on the radio........ The Lookouts started with a 6-1 lead after six innings. The Stars one run was a gratuity. An unearned run on an error by pitcher Steve Kelly when Brandon Gemoll scored from second base on a force play at second......... Held to only three hits until they finally became a threat until the 8th, they made their biggest bid for their sixth straight come-from-behind victory.

Facing new pitcher Todd Coffey, Tony Gwynn, Jr. extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff single and then stole his club-leading 7th base...... With one out, Prince Fielder, with "Big Daddy" Cecil watching from the stands, thundered a double to right-center, capping off a 2-for-4 day, raising his average to .292....... After Brad Nelson advanced him over to third, Gemoll, came up with a big two-run shot into the picnic pavilion in right field to finish the scoring for the Stars that inning....... Gemoll, who should have started the season at Indianapolis had languished on the bench. Last year's SL fielding champ at 1st base was playing behind Prince Fielder this year, and his bat was suffering for it. But today, he broke a 1-for-18 slump with his first two-hit day since April 11.

In the 9th, Roberto Giron came on for Paul Stewart, who gave up three runs in relief of Jeff Housman, and got a pair of ground outs and a fly out........ In the bottom half, the Stars went to work to chip away at a 6-4 Chattanooga lead, certainly not insurmountable the way they've been playing.

In 2002, Joel Alvarado made his debut with the Stars with two singles in his first 11 at-bats. A season later, he was off to a 1-for-25 start, which led to a trip to High Desert in May....... A notoriously weak batter, praised more for his defense, Alvarado lashed a leadoff double in the top of the 9th, giving him a 3-for-6 start at the plate this time with a pair of doubles. Not bad for a sudden call-up from Helena, who wasn't expected to do much at the plate........ After Travis Thompson struck out Johnny Raburn looking, pinch-hitter Jason Belcher singled to center to score Alvarado, and now the Stars were down by just one......... Belcher is this year's Ryan Gripp, now 3-for-4 as a pinch-hitter.

The Stars have successfully cut down on errors after starting their first 10 games with 19. In their last 10, they have made just six........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. is hitting .298 in his 10-game hitting streak, but right behind Tony is Brad Nelson, now with five straight...... Chris Barnwell is 2-for-19 in his last six games....... The middle of the Lookouts order killed the Stars this afternoon, going 6-for-12 with four RBIs and a pair of homers.

The Indianapolis Indians, last-place finishers last year in their division in the International League, and wondering if they should sustain their link with the Milwaukee Brewers, might have second thoughts this year........ Their fans must be certainly pleased with their 12-5 start and much of the credit goes to last year's Stars....... Ben Hendrickson is among the IL's top 10 ERA leaders. J.J. Hardy has a club-leading 13 RBIs. Dave Krynzel is hitting .273, although he is striking out at a .345 clip, and Corey Hart is hitting over .300 with four HRs and 11 RBIs........ Closer Jason Childers has six saves and a 2.00 ERA and brother Matt, with a 5.14 ERA has won a pair of games...... And Chris Michalak, a Stars pitcher from long ago, has two wins and a microscopic 0.75 ERA with his new submarine-style delivery.

Looking at how some other former Stars are doing, Travis Smith, pitching for Richmond, is 4th among International League ERA leaders with a 1.59 ERA, and Noochie Varner is hitting .389 for El Paso, 2nd best among Texas League batting leaders.

I'd like to thank roto-fan BIll Bowman and Nancy and Carl Miller, the parents of pitcher Ryan Miller, for the very nice e-mail they sent. It's people like those I don't personally know who take the time to tell me how much they enjoy the work I do on this site. I've already e-mailed them personally and now I'd like to publicly thank them. Best wishes to you both.

Incredible performance by LHP Ryan Costello in relief; fine night for the Mavs overall -- a nice respectable stretch for the boys over the past two weeks or so; details in the AM...

Eric Henderson's pitching line is one of the more bizarre lines we'll see this season. And agreed with Jim that this was a good (and much needed good) outing for Ryan Costello, and the Mavs have been playing not-horrible ball lately.

Brewers' farm system is over .500 nearing the end of April for the first time I can remember. 4 games over. Woo.
