Does Gwynn Jr. still have a hitting steak going on? If so, it has been a very peculiar streak to say the least. Seems like he always has one hit....goes 1 for 4 or 1 for 5...his average has not really moved up as you would expect it to during a good-sized hitting streak. I want to say he is around 12 games now????

Indianapolis Game Summary:

Jeff Liefer unloaded on the Toledo Mud Hens (10-12) with three hits and six RBI Friday night as Indianapolis (13-5) beat Toledo, 8-6. Liefer?s RBI total ties the all-time single game Indianapolis record set at Victory Field by Roberto Petagine (8/17/98) and Tony Tarasco (8/17/98).

Liefer smashed a three-run homer to center off Toledo starter John Ennis, scoring Chris Magruder and J.J. Hardy in the bottom of the first.

The 29-year-old Liefer then connected on a three-run double to left center in the Tribe second as Indianapolis built a 7-0 lead.

"The first pitch I hit out, I new I needed a hit with runner?s in scoring position." said Liefer. "I was just trying to get the runner from third in and hit the ball to right. He threw me a slider and I got some air under it. The second hit, I was looking for a fastball and I was trying to be aggressive. It was pure luck on my third (infield) hit."

Indianapolis added another run in the fifth as Jon Nunnally hit his third homer of the season into the right field lawn for an 8-0 lead.

Toledo did not quit. They attacked Indians relievers Travis Phelps (1-0) and Chris Michalak for six runs-a pair each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Michalak struck out Nook Logan with a pair of Mud Hens on board to end a rally in the eighth.

Jason Childers earned a league-leading seventh save in the ninth, striking out the final two Toledo hitters.

The two teams meet Saturday night. Indianapolis sends righthander Matt Childers (2-1) to meet righthander Shane Loux (2-2, 3.24).

Indianapolis Star on Jeff Liefer's Thursday Night Fun:

Blame delay of game on Liefer's relief work

Indians wait 15 minutes for 1st baseman when he gets stuck in bathroom

By Jeff Rabjohns

jeff.rabjohns@indystar.com

The Indianapolis Indians were taking the field for the fourth inning during Thursday night's game against Louisville when Tribe manager Cecil Cooper noticed he didn't see first baseman Jeff Liefer.

"Then somebody yelled, 'He's locked in the john,' " Cooper said.

There was Liefer, who spent parts of five seasons in the major leagues, stuck in the bathroom behind the home dugout at Victory Field.

With the help of tools passed through an air vent, Liefer was eventually freed, but the incident caused a 15-minute delay in the Indians' 9-0 loss.

"I flushed the toilet, went to open the door and the handle didn't work," Liefer said.

He didn't have to yell for help because teammate Matt Erickson, who was waiting to use the bathroom next, heard Liefer jiggling the door handle. Erickson pounded on the door with his shoulder but got nowhere.

The vent, located about a foot above the door, was then pried open and Liefer was handed a wrench. He got the handle off, but the bolt wouldn't turn.

"So I was just sitting there with a door with no handle," he said.

He eventually was handed a hammer and chisel and knocked the hinges off the door.

"When I went back out there (on the field), the other team was messing with me a little, throwing toilet paper on the field," said Liefer, who went 0-for-3 in the game.

"I don't think I've seen anything as funny as that," Cooper said. "I can't tell you what it comes close to. That's the funniest thing I've ever seen."

Liefer rebounded nicely Friday, tying the franchise record with six RBIs in an 8-6 Tribe victory over Toledo.

Final: Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 6, High Desert 2

High Desert Site Game Summary:

MIDDLE MEN

In the recent weeks, it has been the starting pitching for the High Desert Mavericks that has been a major factor in the win column.

On Friday night, it fell victim to an offensive onslaught by the Lancaster JetHawks? middle of the order in a 6-2 loss to Lancaster before 1,672 at Mavericks Stadium.

Carlos Quentin, Jesus Cota, and Jamie D?Antona combined for five RBI?s, all in the first three innings, while combining for a 4-of-12 effort at the plate.

The Mavs (8-14) fell behind 4-0 in the first, when Carlos Quentin laced an RBI single to left off High Desert starter Forrest Martin to get Lancaster on the board. Jesus Cota followed with an RBI double, while Jamie D?Antona followed with a RBI groundout.

Quentin followed in the third by launching his fifth homer of the year, a two-run moonshot to left, hiking the lead to 6-1.

The Mavs got on the board to cut the Lancaster lead to 4-1 in the second, when John VandenBerg laced a triple to left off Lancaster starter Clint Goocher. Vanden Berg, attempting to stretch a double into a triple, forced a wild relay throw from shortstop Adam Haley that allowed Vanden Berg to score upon reaching third.

High Desert got one more in the eighth, on an RBI single by Dan Boyd, who has shown recent signs of breaking out of his nightmarish nine-game hitting slump.

Goocher (2-2) picked up the win for Lancaster (16-8), allowing only two runs on six hits in 7.1 innings along with nine strikeouts. Martin (0-2) suffered the defeat, giving up six runs on six hits in four innings. Glenn Woolard threw a more than satisfactory middle-innings effort for the Mavs, striking out four on a three-hit, four-inning scoreless performance.

Quentin led the JetHawks with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with three RBI?s, while VandenBerg led the Mavs by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Mavs look to even the three-game series at one apiece on Saturday night, sending Bo Hall (1-2) to the hill against counterpart Adam Bass (2-0), with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. (9:05 Central) at Mavericks Stadium.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Another night, another highlight. In a 5-2 loss to the Lookouts on Friday at Bell South Park, Stars first baseman Prince Fielder dropped jaws again. One evening after homering to dead-center and laying a ferocious hit on Chattanooga catcher Brian Peterson, Fielder hit a Herculean homerun to right, a solo shot that appeared to pass by the bank of lights beyond the wall as it sailed over a grove of trees. With the loss, Huntsville (11-9) fell out of first place in the Southern League West.

Fielder?s sixth homerun this season continued his torrid hot streak. With a pair of multi-hit games in the series at Chattanooga, Fielder has hit safely in eight of his last 11 games, batting .388 with four homers, two doubles, eight runs batted and 10 runs scored.

Chattanooga (13-9) jumped to a 5-0 lead through six innings, starting with two in the third on consecutive two-out, run-scoring singles by Dionys Cesar and Jessie Gutierrez. In the fifth, William Bergolla tripled and scored on Cesar?s double, then Jeff Bannon and Bergolla each drove in sixth-inning runs with singles.

Lookouts righty Luke Hudson (1-0), on the road back from shoulder surgery that wiped his 2003 season, picked up his first win since 2002 in the International League, authoring five scoreless, four-hit frames, walking three and fanning eight. Stars right-hander Tim Bausher (1-2) suffered his second loss, permitting two runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

The Stars return home to face West Tenn in a doubleheader that starts at 6:05 p.m. on Boeing Night at Joe Davis Stadium. Game one completes a suspended game from April 22 at Pringles Park and resumes with the start of the third inning, Huntsville batting as the visiting team and trailing 6-3. Paul Stewart (1-0, 3.44) pitches game one for the Stars, with the game two starter undecided. The Diamond Jaxx start Bobby Brownlie (2-1, 3.80) in game two, with game one undecided.

Here's a reminder from April 22nd as to what happened in the suspended game that picks up at 6:05 Saturday night:

Huntsville Site:

It took a torrential downpour to stop the offenses on Thursday at Pringles Park. With Huntsville trailing the Diamond Jaxx after two complete innings, 6-3, rainfall postponed play in game one of a doubleheader. Game one will be resumed and game two played in its entirety as part of West Tenn?s visit to Huntsville, May 1-4.

Chris Barnwell ? coming off a three-run homer in Tuesday?s 7-6 win ? delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the first for a 2-0 Stars lead. The Diamond Jaxx responded with a three-run first on the strength of Micah Hoffpauir?s two-run homer and Dennis Sarfate?s errant pick-off throw that scored Mike Dzurilla.

Huntsville tied it in the top of the second, when Tony Gwynn, Jr. was hit by a pitch with two outs. Ryan Knox drew a walk and Prince Fielder ? Tuesday?s hero with a go-ahead two-run homer ? singled to right-center. Gwynn, Jr. scored easily and skipper Frank Kremblas sent Knox home all the way from first. Richard Lewis? relay throw nailed Knox in a close play the plate.

The Jaxx reclaimed the lead in the home second. Ronny Cedeno led off with a double and Dwaine Bacon walked, then Richard Lewis doubled home Cedeno and sent Bacon to third. Jemel Spearman?s double off the leftfield wall scored Bacon and Lewis to put West Tenn up, 6-3.

Sarfate surrendered six runs, five earned, on six hits, one walk and one hit batter in two innings. Jaxx starter Renyel Pinto permitted three runs on four hits, three walks and one hit batter over two frames.
