Link Report for Games of Monday, May 3rd

Final: Indianapolis 6, Toledo (Tigers) 4

Indianapolis Game Summary:

Corey Hart collected a pair of hits, stole a base, and drove in three runs Monday afternoon as Indianapolis (15-7) defeated Toledo, 6-4, before a season-high crowd of 9,681 at Victory Field.

Toledo scored single runs in each of the first three innings off Tribe starter Pedro Liriano (2-0) who collected the win.

Liriano threw six innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out three.

With Liriano settled on the hill and Toledo nursing a 3-2 lead after four innings, Indianapolis mounted a comeback. The Indians scored one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.

Indianapolis added a pair of runs in the sixth, keyed by Hart?s double into the left center field gap off Mud Hens reliever Eric Eckenstahler, scoring Jon Nunnally, who had reached base on an RBI single. Nunnally finished with two hits, two runs scored and a RBI.

"I have been trying to be patient at the plate," said Hart. "I got a few good pitches to hit today. We have so many guys in our lineup that can get the job done at the plate, that I don?t have to worry too much. We had a good road trip and now we?re concentrating on keeping the momentum going. The older guys on this club have done a great job showing us how to do things the right way and that has helped make my adjustment that much easier."

Tribe closer Jason Childers entered the contest in the ninth inning, giving up a leadoff single to Andy Barkett, who scored on J.J. Hardy?s misplay of an Eric Owens? two-out bouncer to short. Mike DeFelice represented the tying-run of the game and struck out looking to give Childers a league-leading eighth save.

Indianapolis begins a four-day, four-game homestand with Charlotte Tuesday on Ladies Night. The first 4,000 fans will receive a one-carat cubic zirconium. One lucky fan will receive a genuine diamond. Jewelers will be on hand to check the rocks to determine which is real.

Thanks to mls4 for posting the Indy box score earlier, but it may have been lost in all the nickname chatter...

Final: West Tenn 4, Huntsville 2, 10 innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Huntsville (13-12) stranded a season-high 13 runners and spoiled an outstanding effort from starting pitcher Jeff Housman in a frustrating 4-2, 10-inning loss to West Tenn (11-13) on Monday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars fell one-half game behind leader Birmingham in the Southern League West.

Housman delivered his best performance of the season, fanning a personal and team season-high nine batters over six outstanding innings. Housman surrendered just three hits, walked none and left with Huntsville up, 2-1.

Mike Mallory, whose average was under .200 entering the series, drove in his second run of the day and season with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly to tie the game. Mallory had two doubles in the game and is 6-for-11 in the series.

In the 10th, Jaxx leadoff hitter Dwaine Bacon created a rally with his legs. The league?s top basestealer, Bacon drew a two-out walk. He promptly stole his 13th and 14th bases. On a 2-2 pitch from Stars closer Roberto Giron, Richard Lewis hit a flare off the end of the bat into shallow right field for a single, scoring Bacon for a 3-2 Jaxx lead. Aron Weston smoked Giron?s 1-0 offering into the rightfield corner for a double, scoring Lewis with an insurance run.

Giron (0-1), whose earned run average was 0.82 entering the game, allowed just his second and third earned runs this year and suffered his first loss, permitting two hits and one walk while fanning two over two frames. Russ Rohlicek (2-1) picked up the win, walking three and fanning two in two hitless, scoreless innings. Jermaine Van Buren notched his third save, striking out the side in the 10th.

The sixth and final game of the series starts at 10:05 a.m. on Tuesday morning at Joe Davis Stadium when righty Stars Chris Saenz (2-1, 3.37) meets Jaxx lefty Carmen Pignatiello (2-0, 4.13).

Final: Lake Elsinore (Padres) 10, High Desert 1

Tomorrow morning's box score will show that new Brewerfan favorite RHP Glenn Woolard gave up four runs in relief, but Dan Boyd got a late jump on what still sounded like a legitimate two-out bases-clearing double off of Woolard; other than that, 'nuff said...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

IN A RUT

Things are so bunched up right now in the Western Division that even though the Stars have been in a .500 rut for the last 10 games (win one, lose one), they are just ½ game behind Birmingham for 1st place....... But watch out for Mobile. They took two from a strong Carolina team, that compares closely to Huntsville on paper, and they are tied now with the Stars for second place........ The Stars recent aversion to a streak of any kind reminds me for some reason of Dick Scott's teams in 1995 and 1996, which is not good. Those teams were truly mediocre. When I look at the talent on this team, I see the best W-L Pct. in the SL, but it isn't happening........

One can look perhaps at the box score and blame the season-high 13 left on base for this one. They blew quite a few chances today, but to say there's some correlation between the number of runners left on base and losing may be hasty. My thoughts are inconclusive........ Whatever conclusion I have here is hasty because I have a small sample, but the Stars have played 32 games the past two seasons, including this one, in which they have left 10 or more runners on base, and they are 22-10 in those games....... Perhaps the reason for this is that leaving runners has been the residue of some good rallies, but it also can be, as it looked today, the result of poor clutch performance. I'd have to do a more extensive study to see where this has historically fallen, but it's interesting to note that in 2002, the Stars were 8-9 in games where the Stars left 10 or more runners on base....... I have faith that the Stars will heat up this summer, like they usually do. June seems to be the best month, historically.

The Stars are going to have to learn to keep speedy Dwane Bacon off the bases next time....... Bacon shares the SL lead of 14 stolen sacks with Eric Reed of Carolina....... In six games against the Stars, he has five of them, and they hurt the Stars on this windy, overcast, 55° afternoon........ In the 10th inning, he drew a 2-out walk, then promptly stole 2nd and 3rd base, setting up the winning run. That little bloop single off the end of the bat of Richard Lewis would have meant nothing if Bacon's legs didn't get the Diamond Jaxx in position to break a 2-2 tie and beat the Stars, 4-2, at nearly-vacant Joe Davis Stadium......... The attendance of 419, and I can understand people not showing up considering the gloomy, chilly, sunless day it was, was the 2nd lowest for a Stars game in history. It missed the record low that was set only three weeks ago by six.......The sun came out very briefly in the 7th inning and again in the 10th, but it was jacket and blanket day here......... It's supposed to wam up to 70° tomorrow for a school day affair. Kids from all over the Tennessee Valley are expected to be at the Joe for a 10 AM game. Over 6,000 showed up to nearly fill Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium recently in a similar affair.

There's no reason for this game to have been decided by Bacon in the 10th inning....... Jeff Housman pitched one of the best games of his career with the Stars and there have been some. In Game 2 of the Western Division Playoffs last year, he held Birmingham scoreless for seven innings, allowing just two hits for an important Stars victory. In his debut for the Stars on July 20, he hurled six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit to the Diamond Jaxx, piggy-backing with Jason Shelley's huge debut that day........ But Housman, who's best when his sinker and slider are working, never struck out more than five until this game......... The nine Ks is not just a Housman high, it's a season high.

It began with Housman striking out the side in the Diamond Jaxx first inning...... From that point, it looked like it would be all he would need as the Stars scored in the bottom half........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. led off with a walk and advanced when Brandon Gemoll grounded to the right side, but Gwynn was thrown out at third on a bad baserunning play trying to break from second on a ground ball by Rickie Weeks........ With Weeks on first base, Prince Fielder, on a 1-and-0 pitch, hammered one into right field over the head of Mike Mallory and off the wall. Weeks was windmilled home. The relay throw was on the money, but Weeks got his foot on the plate before Giovany Soto's tag was applied, if it was applied at all. Weeks then knocked down Soto for added measure, I guess to try to knock the ball from him.

Weeks was thrown out at the plate in a similar rendezvous in the 3rd inning on a double by Brad Nelson. Weeks again put a hit on Soto, but Soto was prepared, stepped aside, and made the tag to end the inning.

The Diamond Jaxx tied it with back-to-back doubles by Matt Craig and Mike Mallory in the 5th inning. Mallory, whose average was .200 entering the series, drove in two runs on the day, and is now up to .254. Against Stars pitching this season, he's 5-for-13 (.385) with five RBIs and three runs scored.

The Stars would rally after a pop out by Gwynn........Gemoll powered a ball just inside the right field line for a double, then Weeks hit a two-hop grounder past Lewis into right field. There was no throw as Gemoll scored standing up...... Fielder was then hit on the knee by Blasko, causing the 19-year old slugger to yell out something that rhymes with "duck", and in a spacious ballpark filled with only 400 people, I can't imagine anyone in the park who couldn't hear his pain. I'm thinking with Robert Portnoy's window open in his radio booth, that it might have been even been heard over the air. With FCC administration parrot Michael Powell issuing some really anal fines to broadcasters lately, I hope Resident Bush's moral brigade doesn't shut us down, but it was so quiet at the Joe today, that you could hear conversations during play between the manager and the umpire, the players and the coaches. Really interesting, if not always insightful....... Fielder was left on base as Nelson lined into a 5-3 double play.

Matt Craig's single to right-center sent Matt Creighton, who led off the 7th with a double down the left field line, to third, setting up Mallory's 2nd RBI, a fly ball out to right, tying the game again....... Giovany Soto's hit-and-run single then sent Craig to 3rd.......... Frank Kremblas kept the D'Jaxx from going ahead that inning in a managerial chess match with Bobby Dickerson....... Sensing the squeeze with the runners on the corners and Ronnie Cedeno at the plate, the Wizard called for one pitchout to third, and then another........ The second caught Craig off base in a rundown. Kade Johnson fed to Chris Barnwell. Barney chased him toward the plate with Fielder waiting. Fielder chased him a few steps then applied the tag and it would remain 2-2 until the 10th inning.

The Stars, meanwhile, squandered chances......... In the 7th, the Stars loaded the bases on a one-out single, another hit batter (Weeks again for the 2nd time), and a two-out walk to Nelson, but Kade lined out to short to end the inning.......... Kade is .444 against the rest of the league, but against the Diamond Jaxx this season, he's 0-for-11. He's made contact. Only one strikeout. But he's wearing that sombrero ...... Kade also ended a potential rally in the 9th with runners on first and second when he hit a broken bat liner right back to winning pitcher Russ Rohlicek to send the game into extra innings.

Other than that failed squeeze play at the plate, the most exciting was turned in by Rickie Weeks in the 8th inning........ After Bacon reached on a perfectly placed bunt single to lead off the inning, Lewis hit a liner that tipped off the glove of a leaping Weeks. The ball fell to the ground and Rickie instinctively picked up the ball and submarined it to Enrique Cruz. The bang-bang play at second went our way for once, and Bacon was out.

Roberto Giron was perfect in the top of the 9th on two grounders and a strikeout, but that incredulous dunker to right by Lewis, scoring Bacon, who was off on the pitch in the 10th did him in...... He allowed just his second and third run raised his ERA from 0.82 to 2.08.

If the Stars recent win one-lose one pattern continues, Chris Saenz (2-1, 3.37) should have a win in his bag tomorrow morning against lefty Carmen Pignatiello (2-0, 4.13). Set your alarm. It's breakfast at the Joe.

The Stars have now committed one error or less in 18 consecutive games, the best streak since June-July 1987, when they remarkably kept it going for 29 consecutive games........ They've made just three errors in their last 11 games........ Enrique Cruz, who made five errors in his first eight games, hasn't made one since April 17....... Jeff Housman's nine Ks is the most by a Stars pitcher since Jason Shelley struck out nine against Mobile on August 16 of last year......... The Stars are now 10 runs away from a milestone of 14,000 in their history.

Nice to see Nelson with 3 walks, who quietly has built up his season total to 10 in 79 AB after taking so long to get his first one. The 10 walks ties him for the team lead with Prince.

I should also point out that Hart has 8 in 79 ABs, so he's right at the 1 BB for every 10 AB ratio.

The day you mention this you get a Sweet vs. Cap'n Lou debate, among other cat fights

*sigh*

if a guy wants to be called sweet lou, then call him that, dont call him soemthing else just cause YOU like it better, its not YOUR nickname.

How would he ever aquire a nickname then? I've had about 5000 in my lifetime and they all were different depending on the person.

And until one of you actually become friends and hang out with Lou, you dont ahve the right to call him whatever you want.

And to disprove your theory I shall now refer to Lou as Optimus Prime from here on out. And everyone must now call me Cobra Commander.

Hey Cobra Commander, seeings how you'll be referring to "him" as Optimus Prime, I will be referring to him simply as PALSMO, someone else said they will be referring to him as Palmolive, and he's already deeply entrenched with Sweet, and Cap'n, he's rapidly approaching your high water mark of 5,000 nicknames.

If you get to be Cobra Commander, I get to be Storm Shadow!

Does anybody know what's up with Jeff Housman? Nine Ks and no walks in six innings? I know it's just one game, but he never would have put that line up last year. I've been a big doubter about him, thought Sickels had him way overrated in the prospect book -- but if he's becoming a strikeout pitcher, that's different. Has anyone seen him? Is he throwing different stuff?

Who is Jeff Housman? Wait a minute. Do you mean Lord Oppenheimer of the Khodan Armada? Personally, I think WonkotheSlershBorb has him undervalued.

You're off your game cobra commander. I expected to see that icon about 3 minutes after the request came.

Honestly Storm Shadow, plans of World Domination always take precidence over the Brewerfan message board. You should know that.

A lot of piss and venom in this thread simply because a guy doesn't like a nickname of a low A ball catcher. Wow.

No MLB game to watch can drive people to crazy things.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

I know what Manager Mel Queen was trying to say here, but it still came out wrong:

"It's one loss," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "It doesn't matter if it's 1-0 or 10-1. It's one loss. In fact, if I'm going to lose, I'd rather lose 10-1 than 1-0 because in a 1-0 game, you got a chance of winning that game."

Also, read the game notes at the end of the article for more discussion on the official scorer's decision regarding Sunday night's game.

Mavericks' first baseman Travis Hinton waits for the throw from pitcher Glenn Woolard in an attempt to pick off Lake Elsinore's Paul McAnulty during the seventh inning at Mavericks Stadium. McAnulty was safe and the Storm went on to beat High Desert, 10-1.

LOL... is that you, Nedley? Doubles are better than home runs, and now blowout losses are better than games you've got a chance to win? Too bad Mel doesn't use the word "battle" more, or he'd be on the fast track for a job in the MLB. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Before anybody starts defending him, I [also] know what he was trying to say. It's still pretty funny to read, though.

. . . let me try this again. Jeff Housman's 2004 Huntsville dossier includes the following numbers:

23.1 innings, 25 strikeouts, three (3) walks.

Last year:

Beloit: 87 innings, 48 strikeouts, 25 walks

Huntsville: 46.1 innings, 26 strikeouts, 17 walks.

He has never posted even a 2-1 K/BB ratio, although he was close at every level until his Huntsville callup. Will somebody please tell me who this guy is and what he has done with Jeff Housman?

Greg.

Totally wrong. If a guy tells you he wants you to call him something, you don't. Why? Because that's lame. If I told you to call me Snake, and you are not lame, then you would call me Worm, because you realize how lame it is that I asked you to call me Snake. Or you would call me something compeletely unrelated to snake-dom. Good nicknames always come from the caller and not the callee.

And until one of you actually become friends and hang out with Lou, you dont ahve the right to call him whatever you want.

Again I disagree. Some of the best nicknames in sports are created on SportsCenter (and no, I'm not talking about Berman's middle names). The SC writers typically are not friends with the athletes.
