Final: High Desert 9, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 3

High Desert Site Game Summary:

THROW FORREST THROW

MAVS TAKE FOUR OUT OF LAST FIVE

Forrest Martin tossed in his finest performance of 2004, backed up by a high-powered High Desert Mavericks offense in a 9-3 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm before 1,047 at Mavericks Stadium on Wednesday night.

Martin (1-2) picked up his first win of the 2004 campaign, stringing together five innings of quality work on the mound, allowing only two runs on three hits with six strikeouts.

Martin at one point retired four of five batters he faced on strikeouts, all strikeouts looking, as the Lake Elsinore offense had trouble timing Forrest?s nasty curveball.

The Mavs (11-15) have now won four of five games, and jumped out to an early lead for the second straight night. High Desert touched up Lake Elsinore starter Gabe Ribas (1-2) for four runs in the first, on a two-run double by Dan Boyd, a sacrifice fly by Jeff Eure, and a Kennard Bibbs RBI single.

High Desert got two more in the second to put the game out of reach, when Boyd struck again for a two-run single, hiking the lead to 6-0.

The Storm (13-12) got on the board by scoring two in the fourth, when Steve Baker laced a two-run double to right off Martin. The six batters that reached the plate in the inning would only be the longest inning surrendered by Mavericks pitching all night long.

High Desert answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, when Ozzie Chavez smoked his first homer of the year down the right-field line, while Boyd followed with his fifth RBI on the night, a one-out RBI single to center which booted Ribas from the game.

Travis Hinton finished the Mavs scoring with an RBI double in the sixth, while Lake Elsinore added their final run in the seventh on a solo home run by Ronnie Merrill.

Boyd led the Mavericks attack with a sparkling 3-for-5 night at the plate with five RBI?s.

The Mavs, who are guaranteed at least a series split in the four-game set with Lake Elsinore , take the field for the final game of the series Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium. Bo Hall (2-2) will get the start for High Desert , facing Lake Elsinore counterpart David Pauley (1-3) at 7:05 PM (9:05 Central).

Wow, the Mavs might eclipse last year's win total by the end of July.

How long til Chris Morris sees AA? I know there's a logjam, but there's gotta be a point......

The guy is pushing 1,000 AB's at A+ within 2-3 games. He's 24. Move him up.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Martin's tough luck ends

Mavericks put up 13 hits in rout of Lake Elsinore

By KRIS REILLY/Staff Writer

ADELANTO ? The hex has been lifted.

High Desert pitcher Forrest Martin won for the first time this season as the Mavericks beat Lake Elsinore 9-3 on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

The victory ends a frustrating drought for Martin (1-2). He had appeared in five games and only twice allowed more than two earned runs, but he had nothing to show for it but two losses.

"I was beginning to feel cursed or something," Martin said. "It was nice to get in that victory column. ... We were really able to keep them off the board tonight."

Martin was superb in his sixth appearance and fifth start of the season on Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts.

He also had plenty of run support. Ten Mavericks had plate appearances, and nine of them got hits. Designated hitter Chris Morris went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases; shortstop Ozzie Chavez went 2-for-4 with a home run; and outfielder Dan Boyd was 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs, giving him a total of nine RBIs in the past two games.

"The last couple of games, I've been trying to be a little more patient at the plate," Boyd said. "I've been trying to get a pitch in my zone that I know I'm pretty good at handling, which is out on the middle of the plate and the outer half. I've been fortunate enough to get a few of those, and when I've been getting them, I've been putting good swings on them."

While Martin was cooling down the Storm's bats, the Mavs were roughing up Lake Elsinore starter Gabe Ribas (2-3), who lasted only 3 1-3 innings. High Desert had a commanding 6-0 lead after two frames.

"It helps to get off to an early lead," Mavericks manager Mel Queen said. "It takes the pressure off the pitcher. It lets him relax and lets him pitch the way he's capable of pitching without being uptight."

Eight Mavericks came to the plate in a four-run, four-hit first inning. Morris singled, Callix Crabbe was walked and Boyd drove in both runners with a double to right center.

A one-out sacrifice fly by Jeff Eure scored Boyd, and the Mavs made it 4-0 when Froilan Villanueva doubled and was driven in by a Kennard Bibbs base hit.

Martin struck out the side in succession in the top of the second, then High Desert's hot hitting continued. Chavez led off with a single, and Morris used his speed to get on base with a bunt. Lake Elsinore third baseman Kervin Jacobo wrangled the bunt, but Morris turned on the jets and beat the throw to first.

Ribas walked Crabbe to load the bases, and Boyd exploited it with a sharp two-RBI single that whizzed just beyond the reach of Lake Elsinore shortstop Luis Cruz, giving the Mavs a 6-0 lead.

The Storm didn't get a hit off Martin until Kennard Jones hit a two-out single in the third. Martin got Cruz to pop up and end the threat. Lake Elsinore (13-13) got on the board in the following inning when outfielder Steve Baker hit a one-out, two-RBI double to right center, but Martin struck out the next two batters.

Chavez led off the fourth inning by crushing a solo home run to right. The ball faded into the night sky after passing the outfield fence and the additional fence beyond it.

The Cal League's leading base stealer, Morris, got on base with a walk, then stole his 20th and 21st bases of the season. Boyd drove in Morris with a single for his fifth RBI of the game, giving the Mavs an 8-2 advantage.

Scott Candelaria went 1-for-4 to continue a nine-game hitting streak.

Mavs reliever David Nolasco allowed a run in three innings of work, and closer Nick Slack pitched a scoreless ninth. High Desert (12-15) remains in last place in the Cal League South Division, with Rancho Cucamonga a half game ahead.
