Housman again???????? It's clear that he's paying the luck gods back for last season, but at what point does this pass beyond fluky WOW to my gosh we've got another pretty good lefty prospect.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

PITCHING AND DEFENSE

Pitching and defense. That's what they say it takes to win games.

If both teams have it on a particular night, you wait for breaks. Someone sneezes --- and he's home.........The Stars hit the ball hard all night, but Jacksonville gobbled them all up, turning over four double plays, the most since Birmingham assembled that many on June 13, 2002....... The game ended for the Stars in symbolic fashion in the 9th when Prince Fielder hit into a double play to end their half of the inning.

In the end, it became a battle of the bullpens. Jeff Housman may not have allowed a run, but Jacksonville, behind by just a run, simply bided their time till Housman's time was up......... The Suns took advantage of Brian Adams in the 8th and 9th, and simply put, their bullpen beat our bullpen, or what little there is of it these days. There were only three guys available tonight --- Adams, Fernando Rijo, and Paul Stewart, and the latter's a stretch. Stew pitched three innings on Friday, but told Frank Kremblas he was ready if he needed him.......

The Stars simply could not back Housman's outstanding slider and good live sinking fastball tonight. He went to only three three-ball counts the entire game, and struck out a season-high nine....... In his last two starts, covering 13 innings, he's allowed just one earned run, striking out 18 along the way and walking just one.

Jacksonville lefty Randy Leek threw just six pitches in the 1st inning, five of them for strikes and retired the first seven hitters before Enrique Cruz singled to left in the 3rd. In the end, he required only 67 pitches, 52 for strikes to get through eight innings, but did not figure in the decision....... Rickie Weeks toured the bases on an 0-1 change-up in the 4th inning, lining it under the scoreboard in left-center field to put the Stars out in front, 1-0, but the Stars came up empty after that, and could not get a runner in scoring position until the 7th when Fielder and Brandon Gemoll both singled and were stranded.

House gave up just four hits through seven, but he had to get himself out of jams in the 5th and 7th innings....... He had retired 13 in a row when Tony Gwynn, Jr. overran what should have been a Nelson Castro double in the 5th. An error should have been charged to Gwynn, who tried to desperately chase the ball with one bare hand high over his shoulder, but Castro was given a 2-out triple. That was followed by a walk to Tony Socarras, but Housman escaped the inning without any damage........

In his last frame, when he was close to 85 pitches, the Suns led off with a bloop single by Willie Aybar that parachuted to right and a double down the right field line by Brennan King, but with runners on second and third and nobody out, behind on Derek Michaelis, he got him to hit the ball right back to him, then struck out Nelson Castro and Tony Socarras on sliders --- a great comeback effort for Housman.

Jacksonville was fairly quick to jump on Brian Adams in the 8th........ With one out, slumping Wilkin Ruan, who snapped an 0-for-24 spin with a 1st inning hit, singled to center and advanced on a balk. After striking out Jason Repko, Nick Alvarez singled to right to tie the game....... In the next frame, one out away from going into extra innings, Nelson Castro singled to right-center, putting Willie Aybar, who led off with a walk, into scoring position. Tony Socarras then singled to left, scoring Aybar with the winning run ahead of Gemoll's throw........

Sunday, Chris Saenz (3-1, 3.26) will go against Derek Thompson (1-1, 2.59), coming back after Tommy John surgery at 2:05 CDT. Then the Stars will go to Mobile in time for the great "who wants 1st place anyhow" division race...... Right now, Birmingham leads Mobile, Huntsville, and West Tennessee by just a half a game............ The Stars have now alternated wins and loss in 14 straight games -- the king of all ruts and a club record........ It looks like a scheduled win coming up.

John Novinsky threw a side in the bullpen Saturday, will take a day off, then throw again, and so on, and it's likely he'll be ready for Mobile Wednesday. Novinsky has had some elbow discomfort....... Reggie Rivard, the former hockey player, is playing it tough. Said he could go today, but pitching coach Fred Dabney is holding him up. He had to have his knee drained after a five-inning start...... Matt Ford, who's missed a start and hasn't pitched since April 26, reportedly sat out with arm fatigue......... Nothing was significantly found wrong with Ryan Miller's elbow. There are no bone chips. He's about 10 days away from being able to pitch in a game....... Three days after being activated by the Stars, catcher Alex Delgado was transferred to Indianapolis......... Chris Barnwell, after hitting just .183 in April, is 3-for-26 in May........ The Stars have had only one 10-hit game in their last 13.
