Every time I see Sarfarte listed I get excited.

------------

Me too, seems like he has the tools to be a top notch prospect. Correct me if Im wrong those who pay more attention,

I thought I read somewhere that he throws in the mid nineties and has a wicked curve ball, but needs to work on a third pitch, and commad of all his pitches.

I thought I read somewhere that he throws in the mid nineties and has a wicked curve ball,

I'm not sure about the wicked curve ball part. I know in his Brewerfan.net interview (link on the left side of the page) he mentioned that he'd pretty much always been a one pitch pitcher, because he'd never had to use anything other than his fastball. I took that to mean that his breaking ball is a work in progress, but I haven't seen him pitch yet. Maybe some of the guys who've seen him can chime in...

Edit: Here's the relevant part of the article I was referring to. Sounds like he's more confident in his change than his curve.

BF: What sort of pitches do you throw right now?

DS: Mainly my fastball. I'll use that a lot. This year I started working with a curveball. Our pitching coach, Rich Sauveur, showed me how to throw a curveball. I really had no idea how to throw one. I had never really thrown one. It was always a fastball. I was a closer so I never really knew about the starting. So I finally started getting the curveball. That started helping me out now. And then my change-up has gone from being an average pitch to an above average pitch for me. I'll use a 3-0, 3-1, 2-0, whenever I get to use it on a fastball count. That's it - fastball, curveball, change-up.

after 1 stars down 2-1

Weeks with a leadoff dinger.

Baybears with a triple, then a basehit. Sarfate pickoff attempt went past fielder, totally on Sarfate according to announcer. Runner gets to third. K, ground out scores run, k.

Both K's came on fastballs. 93mph and then 95 to end the inning.

Thanks hardytheman.

When I hear about Sarfarte being a fastball pitcher, I am reminded of Schilling, who--according to myth--once threw a CG victory throwing nothing but fastballs.

Beloit game postponed due to rain.

I live about 5 miles south of Beloit and it is really coming down hard. It isn't going to get started at all, because this rain isn't going to let up.

6th inning: Mobile 3, Huntsville 1

hardytheman, if you are still listening to the game and know what happened let us know. Sarfate must not have pitched terribly bad, I am guessing he isn't in there anymore cnonsidering how the Star's startes are averaging 4.1 innings per start.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

In the words of his pitching coach Fred Dabney, Stars right-hander Dennis Sarfate has displayed ?electric stuff? at times this year. On Wednesday night in Mobile, Sarfate nearly put it all together in his best performance of the season, fanning a personal season-high seven in Huntsville?s 4-1 loss to Mobile (17-16) at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars (17-16) fell 1 ½ games behind Southern League West leader West Tenn.

Sarfate?s six-inning stint was his longest this year. Subtract two bad pitches and an errant pick-off throw, and Sarfate shut down the Bay Bears. He retired 10 of the last 12 batters he faced, not allowing a base hit or a runner past first over his final three innings. Sarfate went to only three three-ball counts all night, and just three of the five hits against him left the infield.

In the first, Sarfate left a 1-2 fastball over the plate to Freddie Guzman, who tripled to left-center, just beyond the reach of a diving Tony Gwynn, Jr. Guzman scored on Todd Donovan?s infield single. Sarfate?s wild pick-off attempt eluded first baseman Prince Fielder and sent Donovan racing to third. Donovan scored on Joe Gerber?s groundout for a 2-1 Bears lead. In the third, Sarfate hung a 1-2 breaking ball to Josh Barfield ? son of former big league slugger Jessie Barfield ? and Josh lined a homer to left, the first of his two solo homers in the game, accounting for the Bears? final two runs.

Mobile starter Steve Watkins made but one mistake, a 2-1 pitch Rickie Weeks ripped for a leadoff homer in the first. Watkins (2-2) authored seven outstanding innings, fanning five and allowing just one run on five hits and two walks for his second win. Watkins set down 12 of the last 13 hitters he faced. Sarfate (1-3) absorbed a tough loss, permitting three runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six frames. Bears closer Brad Baker notched his 10th save in 10 tries, giving up one hit and one walk while fanning one in a scoreless ninth. Baker still has not allowed a run this season.

In Thursday?s series finale, Stars lefty Jeff Housman (0-2, 3.67) meets Bears righty Tim Stauffer (0-0, 0.00), making his first start for Mobile after a promotion from high-A Lake Elsinore. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

Michelle Gardner of the San Bernadino Sun does a nice job with a weekly California League notes column:

SAN BERNARDINO - Pitching coach Dwight Bernard of the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino admits he silently roots for the High Desert Mavericks.

Bernard, who is in his first year with the Seattle Mariners organization, spent the previous five years with the Mavericks' parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers. He served as pitching coordinator last season, so he knows the Mavericks well.

"I know 90 percent of those kids,' he said, before Wednesday's game at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. "They're all good kids. There isn't a bad apple over there. I want them to do well, just not too well against us.'

Bernard said that he definitely tries to relay the information he knows about those pitchers to the Sixers hitters.

He also said it is difficult to see the Mavericks pitchers struggle. David Nolasco, a Rialto native, gave up seven runs Tuesday and had to be left in because the Mavericks didn't have another reliever left. Nolasco was with the Mavericks last year, but was promoted to Double-A Huntsville late in the season mostly on Bernard's recommendation.

"I hate to see that happen to any kid but it happens to everyone,' Bernard said. "I hope he bounces back ... against someone else.'

REUNION WILL WAIT: This series is the first between the Mavericks and the Sixers this season, and it was supposed to be a meeting between two former Citadel teammates, Sixers pitcher T.A. Fulmer and Mavericks outfielder Chris Morris. Fulmer was on the mound Wednesday, but Morris was out of the lineup for the seventh consecutive game because of a thumb injury.
