5 walks for JDLR in only 3 innings is not good. He's had a few shining moments thus far, but I think it is apparrant that he needs some extened time in AAA. I checked his stats from last year and he didnt seem to have the same type of problem with finding the zone. What is his problem this year?

No, not really -- he's had one start you'd call good.

That's hideous today. JDLR is the biggest disappointment in the organization thus far this season, easily.

I'd love to hear Indy pitching coach Stan Kyles talk about this guy. There sure was a lack of enthusiasm about him in Reid Nichols' voice during the interview with Jim Powell.

Big time UGH.

Indianapolis Game Summary:

Starter Carlos Pulido (1-2) and closer Jesse Crain combined to four-hit the Indians as the Rochester Red Wings defeated Indianapolis, 4-1. Crain picked up his seventh save of the year, his second of the series. Rochester improves to 19-16, Indianapolis falls to 19-15. The Red Wings win the four-game series, 3-1.

Indianapolis scored first to open the game. Ryan Knox reached base on a two-base throwing error, then scored on Jeff Liefer?s single for the Tribe?s only run of the game.

Rochester scored three in their first plate appearance off Jorge De La Rosa (1-3), scoring what would be enough runs to secure the victory. The key hit was a two-run homer from Michael Restovich who hit a De La Rosa changeup out of the park.

QUOTES:

Michael Restovich, Rochester outfield on homer off De La Rosa:

"I wasn?t sitting on a change," said Restovich. "I knew that he was comfortable with that pitch and he?d throw it any time in the count. I just told myself to stay back."

Cecil Cooper, Indians' manager on the loss: "We lost an ugly game today in which we played without any kind of tempo," said Cooper. "When you don?t hit, it makes for a bad game. We didn?t deserve to win today. When you don?t hit and don?t catch, you?re going to lose. We just need to play better."

NOTES:

Indianapolis begins an eight-game homestand Monday, hosting the Columbus Clippers. Bucky Dent?s Clippers have won six straight games and now stand just one game behind the Tribe, a position the opposition has not been in since April 15.

Monday?s probables are Indianapolis RHP Travis Phelps (2-1, 5.73) vs. Columbus LHP Andy Beal (2-0, 5.19).

Beloit Game Summary from the Burlington Site:

Burlington, IA ? In front of a Community Basket Day record crowd of 3,194, the Beloit Snappers (19?18) jumped out early and held on to beat the Burlington Bees (13?24) 4?3 at Community Field this afternoon. The Bees have now lost four in a row, one short of the team's longest losing streak of the season.

Bees' starter Ambiorix Burgos (0?4) gave up all four runs in the top of the first inning. Burgos allowed a leadoff walk to Guilder Rodrgiuez who stole second. After a strikeout, Drew Anderson singled and Lou Palmisano drove a ground rule double that bounced over the wall in right?center to drive in the first run. Vinny Rottino followed with a triple to deep right?center that brought in two runs and Rottino scored the final run on a single by Robby Deevers. Manuel Ramirez lined into a double play to end the inning and Burgos didn't allow another run through five innings of work. He finished with six strikeouts and allowed seven hits and three walks. Kahi Kaanoi pitched the final four innings in relief and allowed five hits, but no runs and struck out two.

Ambiorix and Kahi? I liked the two "Dusty's" who pitched for Burlington Saturday -- MassBrew.

Snappers' starter Ken Durost (2?3) struck out a season?high eight and limited the Bees to just two hits through five innings. Tim Dillard took over in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings, but the Bees finally broke through in the eighth. Kenard Springer, Angel Sanchez, and Mitch Maier all singled to load the bases with no outs. Brandon Powell followed with a bouncer to the mound and the Snappers got a force at the plate for the first out. Walter Sevilla then lined one off of Dillard on the mound for an RBI single and knocked Dillard out of the game. Ty Taubenheim took over and struck out Bryan Graham, but on an 0?2 pitch, Luis Gonzalez singled to left to drive in two and pull the Bees to within one at 4?3. Kila Kaaihue flew out to end the inning and then Taubenheim struck out the side in the ninth to complete his fourth save.

No word on whether Dillard left because of injury there -- MB

The Bees and Snappers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Robbie McClellan (1?0, 0.00) will make his first start for the Bees against RH Luis Pena (3?0, 3.56) for the Snappers.

Final: Lake Elsinore (Padres) 7, High Desert 6

Mavericks fought to the end, but fell short; Jeff Eure left in mid at-bat in the 9th after injuring his left wrist..

High Desert Site Game Summary:

The High Desert Mavericks saw a fast start go by the wayside, as Lake Elsinore Storm shortstop Luiz Cruz drove home the tying and eventual go-ahead runs in a Mavericks 7-6 loss to the Storm before 2,009 at Mavericks Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks, after jumping out to a four-run lead early, were held to just a run on five hits after the third inning and were outscored 4-1 for the deciding runs. High Desert led 5-3 in the fourth but Joseph Lima drew Lake Elsinore within one on an RBI double, while Cruz followed two batters later by tying the game on an RBI single up the middle.

High Desert surrendered the go-ahead runs in the sixth, when Luke Carlin scored on a Glenn Woolard wild pitch and Cruz lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to left which scored the eventual winning run. The Mavs threatened with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Ozzie Chavez.

High Desert threatened again by putting the tying run on second in the eighth and ninth, but were stymied by relievers Mike Bumstead and Dale Thayer, when Bumstead retired Scott Candelaria on a flyout in the eighth and Thayer forced Jeremy Frost into a groundout to short to end the game.

The Mavs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Candelaria drilled his first homer of the year, a one-out blast down the left field line off Storm starter Chris Tierney.

High Desert hiked the lead to 4-0 in the second, sending eight hitters to the plate. Mario Mendez began the fray with a two-run double down the right field line, followed by a Chavez RBI single.

Lake Elsinore retaliated with three runs in their half of the third to make it a one-run game, on a bases-loaded walk issued to Paul McAnulty, an RBI-fielder?s choice by Josh Carter, and an RBI single by Michael Johnson.

John Vanden Berg gave the Mavs more breathing room with his third homer of the year in the third, a solo shot to put High Desert up 5-3.

Tierney (1-0) got the win in his first appearance with Lake Elsinore, while Woolard (1-2) suffered the loss for High Desert, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in six innings. Dale Thayer collected his second save on the season by pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Mavs, after a day off on Monday, resume their six-game homestand on Tuesday when they host the Inland Empire 66ers, with the first pitch on 7:05 pm Tuesday night. Eric Henderson (1-3) will take the mound for High Desert against the Sixers? T.A. Fulmer (3-2).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Another excellent start, another tough-luck loss. Stars right-hander Tim Bausher - possessing a curve ball dubbed "The Hammer" by pitching coach Fred Dabney - delivered six more strong innings, only to drop his fourth straight decision in the Stars' 6-0 loss to Greenville (11-26) on Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville (20-17) dropped to third place but remained 1 1/2 games out of first in the Southern League West.

Bausher (1-4) equaled his season high with seven strikeouts in his longest stint of the season. He permitted just four hits and walked none but left trailing 2-0. Over Bausher's six frames, only two G-Braves runners reached scoring position. In the first, Napoleon Calzado's bunt-single followed Adam Stern's leadoff double, and Stern scored as Brent Butler grounded into a double play. Cory Aldridge homered in the fourth for Greenville's only other tally against Bausher. After Aldridge's blast, Bausher retired 10 of the last 12 batters he faced, fanning four.

Greenville lefty Dan Meyer (3-1), the Atlanta Braves' top pitching prospect, notched his third win and faced the minimum 21 batters over seven shutout innings, his longest outing this year. Meyer surrendered just two hits, walked none and struck out eight, one off his season high. Meyer took charge early, striking out Rickie Weeks, Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Prince Fielder in a perfect first, and closed with a flourish, retiring the last 11 hitters he faced.

Stars rightfielder Brad Nelson recorded two of the team's three hits, doubling in the second, then singling and stealing a base in the eighth. Weeks had a fourth-inning single, and pinch-hitter Jason Belcher's ninth-inning walk was Huntsville's only other baserunner.

Stars right-hander Dennis Sarfate (1-3, 5.28) meets G-Braves righty Daniel Curtis (0-0, 3.06) in Monday's series finale. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

minor league baseball isn't about stats at all...its about developing your game to see if you have what it takes to make the big leagues. If Jorge De La Rosa is able to benefit from this rough start then it in turn would be a good thing. The worst thing to do right now would be to trouble the youngster or make excuses for him. Just let him pitch and hope for the best...I still have faith in the man.

Yeah, I may have over-reacted a bit on Jorge.

27 K in 27 IP -- that's a good thing.

Only 24 hits allowed in 27 IP -- that's a good thing.

So we need to look at 20 BB and 4 HBP in 27 IP.

Can and will Jorge turn that part of his game around? Hopefully, yes.

Seven starts to get to 27 IP -- that's been the frustrating thing to see. The high pitch counts in short stints are choking him -- I guess I just really want him to succeed as a starter, and not just have the ceiling of another four-letter initial, VDLS (Valerio de los Santos).

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

A TALE OF TWO ADAMS

Largest Sunday crowd since May 26, 2002 and the first Sunday this season I've seen where the weather has been absolutely perfect --- no rain, no wind, no snow, nohow --- just beautiful cirrus crowds and a muggy 76° afternoon........ Most of them were brought in by the promise of a post-game Christian concert in front of the stadium by some band only an eclectic crowd like that would know........ The Stars' average attendance this year is now 3,338, a far better pace than last year (it would give them over 233,000), placing them 6th in average attendance.

Everything was perfect, and so was Dan Meyer of the Greenville Braves, almost........ Meyer, now the best pitching prospect in the Braves organization since the Braves gave up on Bubba Nelson, now 0-5, 7.04 for the Class AAA - Louisville Bats (IL), was domineering, moving his pitches all around the plate, keeping everyone guessing......... Despite giving up just two hits in seven innings --- a leadoff double to the centerfield wall by Brad Nelson in the 2nd inning, and a single to center by Rickie Weeks in the 4th, Meyer pitched the minimum. He allowed only three other balls to the outfield.......

The Stars couldn't take advantage of a leadoff single up the middle by Nelson in the 8th, or a one-out walk to Jason Belcher in the 9th, either, when the bullpen came in........ It was just bleak. The Stars now fall to 3rd place in the West, after Birmingham beat Mobile, 5-1. For those who are curious to know, the Diamond Jaxx' 10-game win streak was snapped by Montgomery, today, 10-3...... Weeks, Prince Fielder, and Tony Gwynn, Jr. combined to go 1-for-11....... Looking from the top of the trees, Gwynn is hitting .203 this month, but 6-for-20 in his last five games and Prince is mired in an 0-for-15 slump with three strikeouts....... Rickie is hitting .275 in May and 7-for-18 (.385) in his last 5 games.

Tim Bausher did not pitch badly in his six innings of work, and was rather economical with his pitches, throwing 70 --- near his pitch limit of 75...... He struck out the side in the 3rd inning and fanned the last two hitters in the 5th....... Adam Stern scored in the 1st on the decision to go for a double-play instead. Who could foresee that being the deciding run, not that it would have mattered today, but it was Napoleon Calzado's perfectly placed bunt down third base, hit on an almost perfect line, hugging the dirt inside the edge of the grass, that moved Stern to third ........ In the 4th inning, Cory Aldridge hit a 2-0 Bausher pitch just clearing the Aquafina sign in right field -- the third row of billboards in right field, about 345 feet away from the plate...... As if Greenville needed more, the first three Greenville batters in the 9th singled off Brian Adams, who has not had a very good May....... All three runners scored, two of them after Reggie Rivard was brought in....... Adams has given up 10 earned runs in 14 innings of relief (6.43 ERA), giving up 20 hits this month.

This is Greenville's one and only trip to Huntsville this year, so tomorrow will be the last time the Stars will see the GREENVILLE Braves, for next year, they'll be in Mississippi, and who knows what the hell they'll be called. Considering some of the goofy names infecting minor league baseball (Inland Empire 66ers? West Tenn Diamond Jaxx? Swing of the Quad Cities?), will they be the Cotton Capitol Braves? Or the South Central Delta Region Braves? Pearl Braves? I don't think so. My guess is that they won't be called the Jackson Braves either, but I could be wrong....... Mark Hauser, the voice of the Greenville Braves, is moving with the team to Mississippi and is in the process of finding a house there. That's good, because Mark is one of the finest, wittiest broadcasters in the league. Reminds me in some respects of former High Desert announcer Mike Lindskog....... Anyway, the last matchup will be Dennis Sarfate (1-34, 5.28) going against Dan Curtis (0-0, 3.06), both right-handers........ Greenville is now 3-15 on the road........ The Stars then travel to Hoover Met for their first look this season, since an exhibition game that preceded the season, at the Birmingham Barons. Jeff Housman and Chris Saenz will start the first two games of that series.

At about 1 pm today, the Stars received information from Mike Adams' father, Orlando, that Mike got his call to the big leagues....... Congratulations to Mike! We'll be watching his progress, for sure, in Milwaukee....... Mike was an excellent reliever for the Stars, holding opposing hitters to a .208 average and saving 14 games last year to lead the bullpen. This year at Indianapolis, he was 2-0 with a 2.48 ERA, 33 strikeouts and just four walks in 29 innings....... Also congratulations to the beat writer for the Huntsville Times, who does such a superlative job keeping Stars fans informed. Mark McCarter got married and we'll miss his stories in the paper the next two weeks while he's on his honeymoon.

On the other side, Greenville's hitting coach, Mel Roberts has prostate cancer, and will not be travelling with the team on the road, while he receives radiation treatments. His spot is being filled by Phillip Wellman, who was Chattanooga's manager last year.

So as we try to figure out the enigma that is the Stars (&Scrubs?) some food for thought. Nelson and Fielder now have essentially the same OPS just above .900 which is excellent in the Southern League. Prince has shown more OBP through more walks and less Ks, but Nelson has more extra base hits. We know that the pitching has generally been quite good despite not the best defense. I submit that the answer lies at the feet of Anthony Gwynn and his stellar top of the order .292 OBP. With the way Weeks, Prince and Brad are hitting runs should be flying onto the scoreboard. It's not fair to lay fault solely on him their are only 2 other Stars with OBP's above .300 Alvarado and Belcher. But between them they don't even have 100 ABs. This isn't quite as bad as the Giants with Bonds and noone else, but it's close. Perhaps the line-up needs to be dramatically redone?

1) Weeks

2) Belcher

3) Prince

4) Nelson

5) Johsnon (still good power numbers)/ Alvarado

6)+ whoever probably Gwynn in this spot though.

That line-up maximizes your chances pretty well at getting big innings before you cycle through to the outs at the bottom.

"We didn't show up to play today," Mel Queen said. "We just didn't play as good as we're capable of playing."

Huntsville Times Game Story:

Stars have little to shout about in shutout

Greenville's pitching stumps Stars, 6-0

By BROOKE MILAM

For The Times

Right fielder Brad Nelson summed up the feeling in the Stars' clubhouse after the Greenville Braves blanked Huntsville 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium.

"It's over. We've got to come back (today) and hope it's not a repeat," Nelson said. "It was just a quiet day. We've come back the first couple of games in this series, but we just couldn't get anything started ..."

The loss was the first in the four-game series against Atlanta's Double-A affiliate. The series finale is tonight at 7:05.

Nelson was a bright spot for the Stars, accounting for two of Huntsville's three hits. Second baseman Rickie Weeks had the only other hit.

Nelson had a double and a single in his three at-bats. Nelson hit homers in the series' first two games and is tied for third in the Southern League with eight. Teammate Prince Fielder is tied for second with nine.

"Probably some fans show up consistently and know," Nelson said of the streak. "But any added pressure just comes from myself."

The G-Braves jumped on the Stars early with a run in the first inning. Braves left-hander Dan Meyer (3-1) - considered the organization's top minor league pitching prospect - struck out the side in the bottom of the first.

The course for the Stars (20-17) was set. Then Greenville (11-26) blew open a tight game with four runs in the ninth.

Meyer pitched seven innings and struck out eight. Tim Bausher (1-4) took the loss for the Stars, striking out seven and allowing just four hits and two runs.

"We put the ball in play and had a lot of close pitches that didn't go our way," Nelson said. "We've done good the whole year and we're still up there.

"If we can get a win (today) and finish out the series (winning) three of four, that would still be a heck of a series."

Stars right-hander Dennis Sarfate (1-3, 5.28 ERA) faces Greenville right-hander Daniel Curtis (0-0, 3.06) tonight.

Sunday's loss dropped Huntsville to third place in the Southern League West, 11/2 games behind West Tenn.
