I will admit to being a fan of the weather as far as Indianapolis is concerned this week.

After hosting Durham tonight, the Tribe flies to Rhode Island for a four-game series in Pawtucket. I'll be taking in games 2 and 4 on Wednesday and Friday, and as of now, will be seeing Jorge de la Rosa and Ben Hendrickson in the two contests, with seats just behind the Indy dugout -- psyched!

Be looking for me guys, not many fans will de decked out in Brewer apparel -- I'll likely be a minority of one!

High Desert staff has offered to pass on their game notes daily, which we appreciate. Sometimes these notes can be a bit repetitive in parts day-to-day, so I'll try to limit daily entries to new or expanded updates.

So to Roxy and HD staff, thanks, and keep them coming. We won't quibble if you forget on the occasional day or two...

TONIGHT: The Mavs play the final game of a four-game series at the Lake Elsinore Strom (Padres). The Mavericks are entering a stretch where they play 13 out of 16 on the road. High Desert just finished a six-game homestand against Lake Elsinore and Inland Empire where they went 3-3. The Storm has a 8-5 edge on the season series with the Mavericks, winning the first two in this series and won two out of three played at The Diamond April 27 ? 29. The Mavericks have had their troubles on the road this season, posting a 6-15 record and snapped an eight-game road losing streak yesterday.

YESTERDAY: The Mavericks pulled out their biggest come-from-behind win if the season yesterday, erasing a 7-1 deficit and defeated the Storm 9-7. High Desert scored seven runs in the sixth inning all with two outs, highlighted by Troy Farnsworth?s three-run double, as ten straight Mavericks reached base. Pete Rasmusen had three hits and drove in two and Callix Crabbe had three hits and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching a season best for the Mavs. Eric Henderson picked up the win in relief and David Bradley worked the final two innings for his first save.

START ME UP: The Mavericks are in their 14th season in the California League and the fourth as the high A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. It has been a successful run in the desert for the Mavs, capturing three Cal League championships (1991, 1993 and 1997), plus have qualified for the playoffs seven times.

SPEED DEMONS: High Desert did not steal a base yesterday, but they still lead the California League with 65. Chris Morris is tied for the league lead with 22 steals, Kennard Bibbs is tied for fourth with 15 and Callix Crabbe is sixth with 14. Bibbs, Crabbe, Jeff Eure and Morris combined for 186 stolen bags in 2003. Morris led the way with 67 for the Mavs, which also led the Cal League, and he was the top thief in the Brewers organization. Bibbs swiped 55 for Beloit finishing second in the Midwest League. Eure snagged 29 bases and Crabbe 25 steals for Beloit.

BIG INNINGS: Five times in the last seven games, the Mavericks have had innings of three runs or more, posting a 4-1 record on those contests. High Desert had their biggest frame of the season this past Thursday against Inland Empire, scoring eight times in the eighth inning on the way to a 12-2 win. Yesterday, the Mavs posted their second best inning of the year, scoring seven times in the sixth to comeback from a 7-1 deficit.

ON DECK: The Mavs hit the road for a stretch where 13 of the next 16 games continues tonight at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore in the third game of a four-game series. The Mavericks return home Tuesday to open a brief three-game pit stop here at Mavericks Stadium against the Stockton Ports, before heading off on a nine-game trip.

Your rotation for Monday-Friday this week is Parra - Ballouli - Martin - Woolard - Hall. -- MB

Suns tie it up 1-1 in top of 6. Saenz retired first two batters on just two pitches, and gave up a two out walk. Beautiful hit and run set up runners at the corners and a soft single tied it.

Edit: Stars get out of it without further damage. Gwynn, Weeks, Nelson due up next inning -- let's take the lead!

Final: Indianapolis 6, Durham (Devil Rays) 5

Indy with a 4 spot in the 8th...

Indianapolis Star Game Notes:

Luis Figueroa extended his hitting streak to 11 games, including the game-winning RBI, as the Indianapolis Indians beat the Durham Bulls 6-5 Monday night at Victory Field.

The Indians (25-17), behind since the third inning, surged with four runs in the eighth to take the lead for good.

Indianapolis scored first when Matt Erickson scored on an error, but the Bulls (23-19) took the lead in the third when Fred McGriff hit a two-run homer down the right-field line.

B.J. Upton hit an inside-the-park home run in the seventh to put the Bulls up 5-2 before Indianapolis' big inning.

"I trust myself to put the ball in play," said Figueroa in a news release provided by the Indians. "We keep doing the same things over and over again. We never quit."

Figueroa's single drove in designated hitter Brandon Gemoll.

"I felt like I was swinging the bat well all night," said Gemoll, who drove in two runs and scored the game-winner.

"I swung at a couple of dumb pitches earlier in the game. I was looking for a fastball to hit. Before my at-bat, I was working on the tee in the walk through and that really helped me prepare."

Roberto Giron (2-0) earned the win and Jason Childers had his 11th save of the season for the Indians.

Former Milwaukee Brewer Al Reyes (2-1) took the loss for the Bulls.

Final: Jacksonville (Dodgers) 3, Huntsville 1

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

The Stars? four-game winning streak came to an end Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville led 1-0 into the sixth but fell 3-1 to the Jacksonville Suns (24-21). The Stars (24-21) fell 2 ½ games out of first in the Southern League West.

Rickie Weeks? third-inning single plated Ozzie Chavez for a 1-0 Stars lead. In the sixth, starter Chris Saenz walked the Suns? Derek Michaelis with two outs. Nick Alvarez?s hit-and-run dribbler snuck into rightfield, sending Michaelis to third. On a 1-0 pitch, Edwin Bellorin, just activated from the disabled list, blooped a single to center, scoring Michaelis with the tying run.

In the eighth, Brennan King launched reliever Pete Zamora?s third pitch deep to left for a solo homer and a 2-1 Suns lead. Jacksonville scored an insurance run with two outs in the ninth. As Reggie Abercrombie broke from first on the 3-2 pitch, James Loney grounded a single to right. Abercrombie raced to third and rightfielder Jason Belcher?s throw came into first baseman Prince Fielder, who cut the ball off. Seeing Loney rounding the bag at first, Fielder dove at Loney as he lunged back safely to the bag. Abercrombie then charged for the plate and narrowly beat Fielder?s throw, avoiding catcher Kade Johnson?s tag with a deft head-first slide, reaching in with his left hand.

Derek Thompson (2-2) picked up the win, fanning three and walking one while allowing four hits and one run over seven innings. Zamora (0-1) suffered the loss, permitting only King?s homer with one strikeout in the eighth. Yhency Brazoban tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

The series concludes Tuesday at 12:05 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium, when lefty Ryan Costello (2-0, 4.26) meets Suns righty T. J. Nall (4-0, 2.27).

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

HOLE IN THE WALL

This was a yawner....... I'm afraid to say this game was about.as exciting as watching the crane out beyond left-center field........ Only once was there any excitement in watching either........ In the top of the 5th, the PA called attention to one of the last pieces of the scoreboard being lifted away --- the message board, where the players were for many years introduced with their batting averages, home runs, and RBIs....... When the game ended, all that was left of the old scoreboard was three steel girders, the two star-shaped ad signs, and the Cingular sign under what was once the scoreboard.

I don't usually call attention to who sings the anthem before the game, but I had met Jody Ambrose before the game........ She came in as a visitor from Beloit, where her husband, a bank executive, is a frequent poster on Brewerfan.net's minor league forum......... She stunned me with her knowledge of the Brewers' minor leaguers, the team, and the minor league system, and even more, found her to be so very nice and refreshing from the usually pre-occupied football junkies at the Joe, who come waiting for their season to start, who normally come out of nothing better to do, and who don't know and don't care to know the players --- true-blue Boosters excluded, of course........ I'd like to welcome her back to Huntsville someday, when we have a scoreboard this time --- our new scoreboard........ Her anthem, sung in a middle register, was excellent, by the way.

Using basically the same lineup manager Dino Ebel used Sunday, except for the use of catcher Edwin Bellorin, taken off the disabled list today, the Suns threatened to do something about the Stars' 1-0 lead in the 4th inning........ Brennan King was on first after being hit by Chris Saenz with his first pitch in the 4th (both teams are showing tremendous restraint in getting even. Twelve hitters have been hit by pitches in the seven games played between both these teams), when Derek Michaelis lashed an 0-1 pitch to left-center for a double........ King rounded third and made a dash for home. Tony Gwynn relayed the ball to Rickie Weeks, back after two days off to nurse his fouled off foot, who fired the ball on target to Kade Johnson who made an easy tag on King........ Michaelis alertly took third on the throw, but on a 1-2 smash to short by Nick Alvarez, Michaelis was gunned down at the plate by Ozzie Chavez....... Two men thrown out at home in one inning!

Saenz threw a lot of pitches, but with higher pitch counts, lasted through seven innings......... Saenz used all of two pitches to get the first two outs in the 6th inning, but the Suns would score that inning........ He got behind on Michaelis and walked him on five pitches....... Alvarez followed by jumping on an 0-1 pitch and delivering it to right field near the line, giving Michaelis enough of a chance to easily make third....... Still trying to find that elusive out, Edwin Bellorin found the gap in left-center to drive in the tying run.

The Suns missed a chance of getting that first run early on in the ballgame........ In the 1st inning, Nelson Castro made his way from first to third on a single to left, a stolen base, and a ground ball, but Willie Aybar flied easily to Brad Nelson in left to end the inning........ In the 2nd inning after Saenz had struck out Brennan King and Derek Michaelis, Nick Alvarez hit a one-hop single to left, then Edwin Bellorin singled to center, but Alvarez overran the second base bag, and Weeks, taking the ball from Gwynn behind the runner, had him trapped dead to end the inning.

The Stars scored their run in the 3rd inning on a two-out single by Weeks........ Ozzie Chavez set this one up by beating out a slow chop to short. Shortstop Nelson Castro barehanded the ball and dropped it, but speedy Chavez had the base........ Chavez was in motion when Saenz hit a two-hopper up the middle that was taken behind the bag........ That action enabled him to safely reach second, otherwise this game would have been a shutout in Jacksonville's favor........ Weeks then singled to left, driving in Chavez. With no chance to get him, Bellorin fired the ball to second, but not in time to get Weeks.......Gwynn, however, ended the inning with a one-hop grounder to Willie Aybar........ The Stars did not get a runner past first the rest of the game, despite putting a runner on in five of the remaining six innings.

With Pete Zamora in relief of Chris Saenz, Brennan King homered high over the K&M sign in left field in the 8th inning on his third pitch. That proved to be the winning run for Jacksonville, who snapped the Stars' four-game win streak ....... Reggie Abercrombie scored a disputed third run in the 9th on James Loney's single, making a fadeaway slide at the plate........ A soft, rather over-cautious throw by Prince Fielder, who took Jason Belcher's throw from right, would have gotten Abercrombie at the plate, but Fielder lost time trying to tag out Loney who was coming back to the bag......... Abercrombie might have been thrown out a play earlier after Gwynn made a fantastic running catch to the track on a long fly by Nelson Castro........ Abercrombie would have been doubled up, but the throw from Gwynn to Fielder was way off line. Prince actually had to cut the ball off in the outfield grass......... But this game was really decided back in the 8th by Murfreesboro native King....... Normally I love to root for MTSU grads, but not tonight.

Prince Fielder filled his new quota of one hit per game with a single to right-center in the 8th. In the 1st inning, he hit into his 6th double play of the season, most of them seeming to come during this slump.

Tuesday's game is a 12:05 businessman's special...... No rain in the forecast, but it is expected to be quite warm and muggy........ The eighth and final game against Jacksonville this season will bring out Ryan Costello (2-0, 4.26) against righty T.J. Nall (4-0, 2.27). Nall has held Stars hitters in two appearances to a .100 average......... The Stars, with tonight's loss, falls 2½ games in back of the Diamond Jaxx.

The Stars are on their way to breaking a club record for the fewest errors made after 50 games........ After 46, they've committed 43 errors. The record for the fewest made after 50 games is 53 by the 1999 Stars....... The Stars already broke the record for fewest errors after 40 games (with 39), also previously held by the 1999 Stars.

Tony Gwynn extended hit hitting streak to eight games with a 1st inning bunt single......... The Stars are still one shy of recording their 700th save in their history. They won their 1,400th game, Saturday night....... The Stars are also 40 strikeouts shy of 17,000 in their 20-year history and 45 away from hitting their 2,000th home run.

Final: Kane County (A's) 6, Beloit 2

Beloit Game Summary (Kane County Site):

The Kane County Cougars beat the Beloit Snappers 6?2 Monday night to start an eight game home stand at Elfstrom Stadium. Jared Trout had his best day as a pro on the mound for the Cougars as River Forest, IL. product Vasili Spanos hit two doubles to put Kane County 11 games over the .500 mark for the second time this season.

The Snappers would land on the scoreboard first plating two unearned runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2?0 lead.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the frame scoring three runs on two hits, the go ahead run scored on a bases loaded ground out by Trevor Brown and the Cougars took the lead 3?2.

Kane County scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Luke Appert and David Castillo had RBI singles. Dustin Majewski lifted a bases loaded sacrifice fly to left field scoring Castillo to make it a 6?2 game.

That?s all that Cougars starting pitcher Jared Trout would need in route to his first win of the season. Trout kept Beloit off balance through seven innings allowing only two hits while tying a personal season best in strikeouts (7) and innings pitched improving his record to 1-3.

J.R. Pickens relived Trout in the eighth, retiring the Snappers in order followed by Jario Garcia who allowed only one base runner on an infield hitto close the door in the ninth. The Cougars will remain in first place in the Western division standings having won nine of their last 11 games.

The Cougars will face the Snappers in game two of the four game set Tuesday in a 12:00 p.m. tilt at Elfstrom Stadium. The Midwest League leader in wins, Steve Bondurant will tote the mound for the Cougars while the Snappers will counter with right-hander Greg Moreira.

This was explained the other day here; it's not like interleague play in the majors, or postseason play.

The only time a DH is not used is when both affiliates are National League teams.

With only two A.L. affiliated teams in the Southern League, Huntsville rarely gets to use a DH.

So a team like Durham (AAA Tampa Bay) never sees its pitchers bat.

And of course, below AA, pitchers don't bat at all.

High Desert is getting close to catching Rancho for not-last-place. That would be awesome, and is a testament to the job a lot of "low profile" prospects are doing for the Mavs.

Great to see Manny on the mound, too... he da' man.

Stars have trouble scoring

A cadaver helps limit Huntsville hitters to one run

By PAUL GATTIS

Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com

The jokes were easy with this one.

Jacksonville Suns pitcher Derek Thompson grinned and said it was "pretty cool having a piece of dead guy bone in me."

Huntsville Stars manager Frank Kremblas quipped that Thompson was a "dead man walking."

And if the Stars need any consolation after their 3-1 loss to the Suns on Monday before 719 at Joe Davis Stadium, just remember this:

Thompson is more than just a man. He's two.

OK, an explanation:

Thompson pitched seven sharp innings, allowing four hits and one run in improving his record to 2-2 and halting the Stars' four-game winning streak.

He's an intriguing story as he pitched deeper into the game than he has all season after coming off Tommy John surgery - in which a ligament was taken from his left wrist and transplanted to his left elbow.

But what's really intriguing is Thompson's left knee.

In 2001, he wrecked the cartilage under the knee cap playing basketball. An attempted effort to heal the knee included shaving down part of the bone in his knee. When that didn't work, a second surgery included taking bone from a cadaver and blending it into the bone in his knee.

Thompson described it as being a "chunk (of bone) about the size of a nickel."

Then he had to hope that his body would accept the new chunk of bone and that his cartilage would attach itself.

Obviously, this was not your everyday knee surgery. Actually, when Tommy John surgery is only the second-most unique surgery you've ever had, you're a walking, talking conversation piece.

But Thompson didn't blink when doctors told him of their plan to use bone from a cadaver to make him better.

"Whatever it took to get me back out there playing again," Thompson said.

Forgive the Stars, though, if they don't rejoice in his comebacks after missing part of the 2001 season and all of last season with the injuries.

The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the third when Ozzie Chavez reached on an infield single and scored on a two-out single by Rickie Weeks.

Stars starter Chris Saenz battled gallantly, allowing a base runner in all seven innings he pitched but surrendering only one run. His defense backed him up nicely, throwing two Suns runners out at home in the fourth inning.

But Jacksonville got a solo homer in the eighth from Brennan King off Stars reliever Pete Zamora (0-1) and added another run in the ninth for just its fourth win in the last 14 games.

And with the surgically-repaired, new-and-improved Thompson pitching, that was a surplus of runs.

"(Thompson) threw well," Kremblas said. "He threw all three pitches for strikes and had good command of his fastball. That was the difference."

Not bad for a dead man walking.
