High Desert Game Log:

www.sportsnetwork.com/mer...MEID=17908

Pogokat, thanks for the overnight box.

LHP Eric Henderson's status with the bat was mentioned yesterday:

Henderson, who started earlier in the year and was recently sent to the bullpen, may get a chance to contribute with his bat. Henderson has been taking batting practice lately and has crushed a few over the fence. Henderson, who also bats left-handed, may be used by High Desert as a pinch hitter if needed.

Still, I've got to believe there were bench bats available who may have had mixed feelings about not playing because a pitcher was the DH...

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

THE GREAT ESCAPE

Behind 6-0, the Stars had left 11 runners on base in the space of four innings, leaving the bases loaded in the 6th, 7th, and 8th....... Still, the Stars continued to put runners on base........ Refusing to roll over and die, they forged one of the greatest come-from-behind clutch comebacks in their history, with Chris Barnwell and Ozzie Chavez, their reputations for clutch hitting now established, striking the big blow in this improbable 7-6 victory.

Neither team can say they made the most of their opportunites. The Suns left someone on base in every inning but the 9th --- the only inning they went down in order. Nine of the 12 runners they left on were in scoring position and only once did a Stars pitcher get a strikeout to get out of an inning, although Ryan Costello struck out two in the 3rd -- his best inning........ It was, still, a rough day for Costello, who threw 83 pitches in just 4 1/3 innings, 50 for strikes (60%)........

The Stars, on the other hand, were held to two hits by T.J. Nall in the first four innings, so it wasn't until the 5th inning, down 5-0, that they began to get their chances --- and see them disintegrate......... Joel Alvarado and Chavez struck out with runners on the corners in the 5th. Jason Belcher rolled out to the right side with the bases loaded in the 6th. Eight men came up to the plate in the 7th, yet the Stars could only manufacture a pair of runs on a single by Tony Gwynn. Brad Nelson hit a soft liner with the bases loaded to end that inning. Another run scored in the 8th on a bases-loaded walk, rather than anyone's contact with the ball. Again the bases were full when the inning ended.

But finally in the 9th, the Stars found a liking to the Suns' closer, Yhency Brazoban, their best man out of the bullpen, who was holding the rest of the league to a .163 average....... Prince Fielder's patience all day at the plate paid off here when he uncoiled on a 3-2 pitch and stroked a leadoff double that bounced all the way to the left-centerfield wall, his first double since May 9, which was, of all places, at Jacksonville's home park........One out later, Belcher doubled off the glove of Nelson Castro, hopping into shallow left, putting runners on the corners........ The tying run was now at the plate in the person of Barnwell, who hit a career high three HRs last year. The job was just to drive in a run and keep the inning alive, but Barney, behind 0-and-2, smashed a liner over the left field corner........ Barney's .208 average hides the fact that he now has 24 runs batted in --- third on the club behind Fielder and Nelson, one of the most productive hitters in the league....... Last year, Barnwell didn't record his 24th RBI until August! Add to the fact that he has made fewer errors than all of April and May of last year, and I say you have an All-Star candidate for the league All-Star game this year....... Following the Barnwell blast to tie the game, Brazoban walked Alvarado on five pitches, bringing up Ozzie Chavez.

Chavez proved his clutch ability was no fluke, after hitting a 14th inning home run less than a week ago to beat Birmingham in his debut for the Stars at Hoover Met.......... Chavez worked the count to 2-and-2, fouled off a couple of pitches, and needing only a good fly ball to decide this game, powered a ball to dead center. It glanced off the glove of Wilkin Ruan, to win the game and the series, 3-1, for the Stars.

The Stars are now 25-21, behind the first place Diamond Jaxx by a game-and-a-half, and dependent on other teams to cut their lead.........The close of the first half is just less than a month away.

Brandon Gemoll hit his first home run for Indianapolis, Tuesday night, in a 9-2 loss to Pawtucket. It came off pitcher Frank Castillo, who authored the first no-hitter ever at Joe Davis Stadium....... The Greenville Braves released outfielder Cory Aldridge, who fans saw recently at the Joe.

Just days away, though, is the operation of the new $300,000 scoreboard........ There was some cheering in the 2nd inning when the first section was put in place, a section that features the pitch speed display, sandwiched between a pair of already-sponsored ad panels. During the 8th inning, the second section, providing for a crawled message, was placed........ There is an outside possibility it will be all put in place sometime Thursday, but the scoreboard will go through some testing before fans get to see all the bells and whistles on Friday........

The forecast for Friday, by the was, looks good. A small chance of rain, which isn't unusual, for it's been rather muggy lately, and that could create a pop-up thundershower....... Upstairs, I took a peek into the control center for the scoreboard, which took up an entire room next to the PA's booth on the 3rd floor....... They were creating the graphics that would go up every time a player comes to bat (I saw Joel Alvarado and Tony Gwynn's). The graphic consists of a head shot of the player, his name at the bottom and uniform number. I suppose they'll have another way of handling the stats, although I think they could fit on that one graphic if they reduce the font size and place it differently....... Two workers were practicing with the camera and a boom carrying a directional antenna on the end. There were boxes out in the hall carrying some of the control room equipment that had been delivered today. Everything seems to be Windows-based, and at least a dozen were being trained how to use the keyboards.

Corey Hart made his major league debut, Tuesday night, against Los Angeles. Pinch-hitting for Victor Santos in the 4th with one on, he struck out (only after driving an 0-2 inside fastball deep, deep foul to left)....... Hart becomes the 143rd former Huntsville Star to make it to the majors.

The Stars could break a club record for the fewest errors made after 50 games...... After 46, they've committed 46 errors. The record for the fewest made after 50 games is 53 by the 1999 Stars....... The Stars already broke the record for fewest errors after 40 games (with 39), also previously held by the 1999 Stars.

Tony Gwynn extended his hitting streak to nine games with three hits tonight. He's hitting .410 during the streak --- the payoff for a lot of time in the cage under the stands far out in left field........ What I also noticed though is that his batting eye has become sharper. Before the streak, he had a strikeout average (SO/AB) of .231. During the streak, it's a mere .103 ...... Brad Nelson hit his 11th double of the month, the most in one month since Steve Scarborough hit 11 in April of 2002....... Jason Belcher, hitting .328 for the month of May, is hitting only .222 in his last seven games........ Prince Fielder has a hit in six of his last seven games, but an average of only .194 in those games...... The Stars are still one shy of recording their 700th save in their history. They won their 1,400th game, Saturday night....... The Stars are also 32 strikeouts shy of 17,000 in their 20-year history and 44 away from hitting their 2,000th home run........ They still have an open roster spot since the departure of Brandon Gemoll. With a day off tomorrow, it's possible they could get someone by the time Mobile comes in Friday. Tim Bausher (1-4, 2.89) will face Bay Bear veteran Chris Rojas, who is playing in his third season for Mobile. He is 3-3 with a 4.73 ERA this season.

It certainly looks like Gwynn has found himself in AA. And he has managed the one HR so he's not exactly Jason Tyner. With Prince looking to be in the productive mood again the Stars look ready to score a whole lot of runs at the top of the order, And Ozzie can chip in a few from the bottom too!

No High Desert report from the Victor Valley Daily Press, even for a home game. It was explained to me last year that since the online version of the newspaper carries only so many stories, the online editor chooses which to go with each day. Often times, unfortunately, we don't see feature articles, player journals and player profile stories for the Daily Press because only the game story "makes the cut".

High Desert Site Game Summary:

The High Desert Mavericks were unable to match the offensive onslaught provided by the Stockton Ports, dropping an 11-3 decision to the Ports in the first game of a three-game series on Tuesday night, before 1,720 at Mavericks Stadium.

Andy Fox proved to be too much for the Mavs, chipping in with a 3-for-5 evening a the plate with a home run, two RBI?s and two runs for Stockton (21-24), the California League Champions from 2002. Fox?s two-run blast in the third off Mavs starter Khalid Ballouli put the game out of reach, putting High Desert (18-28) behind 7-0.

The Mavs shot back with three runs in their side of the third, when Dan Boyd laced an RBI single off Ports starter Jose Garcia and John Vanden Berg followed with a two-run single to right.

High Desert ?s offense went AWOL for the rest of the evening, managing only three more hits the rest of the way off Garcia, relievers Kiki Bengochea and Omar Beltre.

Stockton took a 3-0 lead in the first, on a three-run homer by Anthony Webster off Ballouli. Juan Senreiso followed with an RBI double in the second, along with Joaquin Arias? RBI single to hike the lead to 5-0.

Ballouli surrendered an RBI double to Vincent Sinisi in the fourth to help Stockton increase their advantage to 8-3. Cameron Coughlin and Senreiso finished the damage with RBI triples in the ninth.

Bengochea (1-5) picked up his first win of 2004 by pitching three scoreless innings of relief for Stockton , while Ballouli (3-4) took the loss for the Mavericks by suffering through an unusually rough outing early.

The Mavericks will attempt to even the series on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium, when they send Forrest Mrtin (1-4) to the mound against Stockton?s counterpart in Wes Littleton (1-4) at 7:05 pm (9:05 Central).
