I'm trying to get into the excitement of the new Huntsville scoreboard, but, eh, well, anyway, for those who want to rejoice with the Alabama locals -- the Sergio Garcia line is funny, at least...

LOL... I've been thinking the same thing. Listening to the broadcasts and reading the various game reports, this scoreboard changeover has been Huntsville's equivalent to the building of Miller Park. I'd love to see a picture once it's up, and I'm sure I will, but how can it not be disappointing? At this point, I'm expecting a three-mile wide high-def screen with simultaneous feeds of every baseball game on the planet.

It's cool that folks are excited, though... I don't mean to ridicule - I would be stoked if the Snappers got something that cool, too. Just kind of funny to be a "fan from afar" and hear so much about something only the locals really understand.

Final: Pawtucket (Red Sox) 7, Indianapolis 4

Looks like MassBrew took in a loss. He got to see Paul Stewart's Indy debut... but it wasn't so good. Nice start for Matt Childers and a three-hit day for Liefer, who also smacked his eleventh round-tripper of the season.

What does Jeff Liefer have to do to earn a spot on the big league roster?

Learn to hit right-handed?

Learn to play third?

Learn how to speak in an Australian accent?

Come on, this guy is a good hitter...give him the call!

Also, I guess we learned why Chris Michelak is toiling as a situational lefty in AAA, while the big club has a distinct need to that very thing.

Final: Beloit 4, Kane County (Athletics) 1

Dana Eveland went 6 scoreless innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk to go against 6 punchouts. Tim Dillard added two scoreless frames, but Ty Taubenheim had another rough outing in the ninth. Still, a great job by the Snappers' pitchers to keep the walk-happy Cougars off the basepaths.

No extra-base hits for the Snappers, but they did draw four walks. Incredibly, they racked up 11 singles including 2 apiece for Guilder Rodriguez, Terry Trofholz, Steve Moss, and Josh Murray. ManRam, Jr. also added a pair of steals.

Good win!

Thanks as always, batman.

I'll have more later, but I wanted to pass on that Matt Childers had to leave the Indy game after going to a 2-0 count to the first batter in the fifth inning due to some kind of injury. It wasn't clear what was troubling Matt, and the PawSox post-game radio report was no help in providing details.

Childers left with a no-hitter after four innings, after facing the miminum (a walk, caught stealing). Matt had great stuff tonight, and I had just commented to my cousin that we were looking at a potentially very special pitching performance, when suddenly the medical staff approached the mound.

I watched Jorge de la Rosa do agility drills before the game, and then asked him about his shoulder. He responded (while motioning from a distance), "tendinitis", one word of English he's learned http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif , and he indicated he'd be back in seven days. I'd look for him on the mound again for sure within two weeks.

Thanks MB, looking forward to the more detailed report. I hope you enjoyed your taste of Brewers baseball, or at least the closest thing to for you, this evening.

How many times have we seen this this season? I'm not complaining about the number of pitchers falling to injury, but I'm impressed that the Brewers are so quick to shut these pitchers down & allow their aching arms to rest. I think this is what they were talking about in preseason getting on a more consistent plan from top to bottom. In past years these pitchers probably would have been allowed to pitch through such problems.

***I should have checked the transactions forum first.

This will pale in comparison to the Beloit reports madbad provides us:

3139 in attendance? Many disguised as empty seats on this chilly but only barely damp, so OK, evening.

Met former Brewer farmhand and local guy Justin Gordon by the Indy dugout prior to the game, as he was busy catching up with friends and teammates. It was nice to be able to wish him well in his upcoming stint in the Northeast League.

I was able to speak briefly with Corey Hart at this time, and told him last night's foul ball blast was the "best foul I had ever seen". I don't even know what that means http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif , but then he agreed that it was an awesome response by the crowd at Miller Park for him last night.

Former Oriole John Stephens was baffling the Tribe with soft, softer, and then softest tosses all night long. But early on, Scott Sheldon's HR was a legit blast to left. Hart could have easily been given a triple on a 400-foot smash that went off the glove of the PawSox CF and was ruled a three-base error.

Jeff Liefer then pulled a HR to straight-away right; if there was a Baseball Tonight for AAA, this'd be on for sure, as RF Adam Hyzdu spilled himself completely over the wall in an acrobatic but vain attempt at snagging Liefer's drive.

I know that Trent Durrington had the big HR for the Crew tonight, but the earlier poster above is correct -- Liefer would look so nice on the Brewer bench, and there is a designated hitter series coming up in Anaheim where he'd fit nicely. The Brewers would lose a pinch-runner, but really, you have either Counsell, Hall, or Spivey available for that on any given night.

You'll see Matt Childers charged with two walks -- the second was when Paul Stewart relieved him in mid-count to begin the fifth and completed the base on balls.

Stewart then gave up a tremedous blast to former Cleveland prospect Earl Snyder, his league-leading 14th of the season.

Chris Michalak was nickled and dimed early in his stint, nothing hit hard, but wildness cost him as well. This was really an example of the difference in big league and AAA baseball, as there were multiple instances where a right-handed pitcher could have been brought on to stem the tide. But with multiple pitchers working Monday night and Matt Childers' earlier than expected departure, it was Michalak until the cows came home. A high throw by third baseman Scott Sheldon was critical, and Michalak was getting smoked by the time the go-ahead rally was in full swing.

SS Luis Figueroa is listed at 5'9", 140 lbs., and I believe it. Great game, this baseball, seeing him alongside 6'6" Corey Hart.

Matt Erickson smoked two fly ball outs early on, but really struggled later on. He's hit everywhere and at every level, not sure what's going on in 2004...

Ben Hendrickson was charting the game behind home plate, and I went over to say hello and wished him well for his start for my return trip Friday night. I was then escorted by security back to my rightful seat for being the stalker I am...

Highlights: was thrilled to see Hart in action, Matt Childers pre-injury -- awesome, such an impressive sight at 6'5", 190, dealing like he was

Disappointments: Childers' unwanted exit, no Krynzel and Hardy, no additional help out of the pen to keep the game in reach

I'll have the kid in tow on Friday, so hopefully her cutiepie-ness will keep the authorities off my back http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

And yeah, I was definitely the only guy in the park with Brewer jersey, cap, and seat cushion.

Final: Stockton (Rangers) 15, High Desert 9

High Desert Loses 15 to 9...box later if i'm still up ...otherwise its all yours Jim...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

The High Desert Mavericks fashioned an incredible seven-run comeback but were unable to finish the task, losing 15-9 to the Stockton Ports on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium before 1,334.

Down 8-1 in the fourth inning, the Mavs (18-29) began their comeback with Froilan Villanueva?s fifth homer of the year, a solo bomb to left off Ports starter Wes Littleton.

With Littleton holding the Mavs at bay but exiting after the sixth for wild reliever Ryan Dittfurth, the Mavericks took full advantage. Dittfurth walked an eye-popping first five batters he faced in the seventh, allowing High Desert to cut the deficit to 8-4. Dittfurth was pulled immediately for reliever Gary Hogan, who promptly gave up a two-run double to Callix Crabbe, drawing the Mavs within one.

After Crabbe advanced to third on a Dan Boyd sacrifice fly, Travis Hinton did likewise, scoring Crabbe to tie the game at eight apiece.

The Mavs immediately saw the game slip away in the eighth and ninth, allowing two runs in the eighth and five in the final frame. Craig Ringe, who replaced Adam Fox earlier after Fox was ejected for arguing a strikeout and coincidentally had burned the Mavs the past two nights in a combined 5-for-10, three home-run effort, finished the damage with a three-run triple in the ninth.

Fox aided Stockton ?s (22-24) push for an early 7-1 lead through four innings, when Fox homered in his first two at-bats in the second and third off the Mavs? Forrest Martin and reliever David Nolasco.

Gary Hogan (1-0) received credit for the victory for Stockton , while Nick Slack (1-2), who allowed Stockton?s go-ahead runs in the eighth despite tossing a stellar middle-relief performance, took the loss.

The Mavs will try to salvage game three of the three-game series, with David Bradley (2-2) taking the hill for High Desert against Stockton?s Ben Keiter (2-3).

Indianapolis Post-Game Report, Indianapolis Star:

Raul Casanova's sacrifice fly keyed a four-run eighth inning as Pawtucket rallied for a 7-4 International League victory over the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday night.

Casanova tied the score 3-3 with a two-out single off Paul Stewart in the seventh inning.

Pawtucket (25-22) loaded the bases with one out in the eighth against Chris Michalak (2-5). Casanova lofted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Tony Schrager with the tiebreaking run.

Trace Coquillette followed with a two-run double and Justin Sherrod added an RBI single as the Red Sox broke the game open.

The Indians (25-19) built a 3-0 lead on Scott Sheldon's solo home run in the third off John Stephens and Jeff Liefer's two-run homer, his 11th, in the fourth.

Indianapolis starter Matt Childers pitched four hitless innings, but he left the game after developing tightness in his right leg in the fifth.

"He (Childers) had a great game going," Coquillette said in a news release provided by the Indians. "All of his pitches were on. Childers' stuff was just unbelievable. When a guy's throwing like that, you just want him out."

I hear ya clucking big chicken. As a "fan from afar" I know it's hard to relate, but we fans in Huntsville have put up with a scoreboard whose video screen hadn't worked in three years, and whose bulbs couldn't be replaced for some unearthly reason, thus making scoreboard reading a kind of code-breaking exercise. The original portion of it was as old as the stadium itself. We were ready for something new.

I'm afraid, though, all the coverage has been detrimental. I think the anticipation will exceed the actual event. I was over at the stadium yesterday, since I don't live far from there and it's on my way home from work, so I took a look from my seat (I'm a season-tik holder). All of it had been erected except for the analog clock on top.

My first impression is that "Gee that video screen looks small from behind home plate." It reminded me of the one Class A-Rome (SAL) has, and I don' t mean to denigrate here, but that is a nice ballpark. Also I look at the most important part of the board, the line score, and the teams are pre-ordained as "Guest" and "Home". Kinda cheap. For $300Gs, I'd expect to see the actual names of the teams, not this. At least, "Stars" instead of "Home". Even the old scoreboard identified us this way.

But we'll see if I feel any different when all the bells and whistles are on Friday. If the names are spelled right. If the most fundamental of stats are displayed. And if there are any unexpected goodies from the control room. I won't hold back on my criticism and you'll probably see it all on my site, Saturday.

High Desert starter Forrest Martin experienced tightness in his forearm and was taken out of the game as a precautionary measure after giving up a towering solo homer to Stockton third baseman Adam Fox in the top of the second. Mavs' Manager Mel Queen said Martin did not suffer an injury.
